The PC Engine launches with a borrowed game and a license for a show based on trading stickers that were marketing candy. PC Engine Power is a catalog of the games on the PC Engine.
This channel is such a godsend for gaming history buffs who cant speak Japanese but still want to see what was going on on the other side of the Pacific.
With its many colorful characters and "collect them all" hook, Bikkuriman was kind of the Pokemon before Pokemon. I recall reading that enough parents complained about the rarity of some of the more popular stickers that they actually changed how many were printed to make them easier to get.
I'm actually in the process of writing an article about the convoluted history of the Wonder Boy/ Adventure Island series so this episode showing up when it did is somewhat fortuitous.
LET'S GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I binged the entirely of Famidaily just in time for your FDS series to begin, and I've been a dedicated viewer ever since. I am so hyped for this series. I got into the PC Engine a couple of years ago while I was, uh, "collecting" retro game sets to put on my Steam Deck. Kind of incredible how little attention it gets for having such a robust library. This is gonna be a treat, thank you for everything you've been doing!
He bamboozled us! Happy PC Engine year everybody. In retrospect, mashing up the most popular kids IP of that year with an excellent but (from Famicom users's perspective) relatively obscure Action RPG in tune with all the popular game design trends was a pretty great idea to secure a solid launch title.
Pretty ballsy of Hudson Soft to have a reskin be a flagship launch title for their new console. But, I suppose having a port of an older gen game is pretty commonplace for new systems today.
Now that the series has properly started, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!! WOOOOOOOOO For this first game I have nothing to say because it's just Wonder Boy I was a little sad that the title of the project is "PC Engine Power" instead of "PCE Mania", but upon witnessing the badass rock intro and the equally badass grey background I am now happy and will no longer comment about the name
A great start and a solid game. Bikkuriman you can get in the US, even fi it's a competitors one with some mascot branding, but it'll have to come out of a ranch market or asian food store. I have one close to walking distance to me and they have the mascot copycats with the 2 wafers, chocolate filling, but lately they've had prismatic square stickers of Pokemon on them.
You're inspiring me to play each of these alongside each video coming out! I've always wanted to get more into the PC Engine library and this just feels like the perfect companion piece!
I imagine that translating those designs to the small player sprite was where the art team threatened to quit. Or more realistically, the licence holder vetoed the results.
I had it on sms, there are a few tricks that you discover playing over and over for some easy money if you are skilled like jumping over a certain pit to collect bags of money twice. The first few times you just jump everywhere but after that you know where the hidden coins are. In my play throughs I never buy any pink equipment as its better to struggle through and start with the 2nd lowest one. Buying the ale is supposed to give you hints but you won't have enough money for equipment if you buy any.
When I stumbled upon this game back in the late 90s via emulation and realized it was the same Monster Land game, I was utterly blown away at how it felt arcade perfect. This was when I also realized after seeing the 1987 copyright that the console goes back a whole 2 years further from it's US Turbo 1989 release which made me respect the hardware even more. I assumed the reskin must have been around an Anime but didn't know it also originated from a collectable sticker craze which is super fascinating. 😇
Well, that is one way to find out that Bikkuriman is basically just the Japanese equivalent of what we call Hanuta in Germany (or possibly also Knoppers, but that one has a chocolate coating on one of the outer wafers).
And so it begins! I just recently have developed a fascination with the PC Engine, so I am extremely excited to learn of all the games I never would have discovered otherwise. Here's to another fascinating cataloguing project!
I actually started playing this game just last week. Haven't had a chance to finish it yet but I've enjoyed what I have played so far. Finding the secret coin spots when you jump is pretty satisfying.
I still need to fully catch up on Famidaily (I'm somewhere in the 800s I think) and watch your FDS series, but I just wanted to say thanks for everything you do to help demystify this pivotal era of games that isn't very well understood on this side of the Pacific. Looking forward to this PC Engine series, since it's a pretty big gaming history blind spot for me into which I've only recently started dipping my toe.
I googled the title number of this system. It said there's 678 games on the pc engine. That's less than the over 1000 than the nes had. Seems like a good choice.
I'm not surprised if the PC Engine had a similar architecture as Sega's System 2 arcade board (which it's a PCB Wonderboy in Monster Land came from) I'm not a huge fan of Wonderboy in Monster Land itself though. Anyway, I was expecting you're going to do some Japanese Mega Drive stuff but I see... I'm looking forward on your new project with the PC Engine stuff instead as I sure am intrigued with your content, good luck!
It begins! I'm very eager to see this long march into the depths of the PC-Engine. It's a platform I've only lightly dabbled in, mostly for shmups and that one turn-based strategy game that plays kind of like Famicom Wars's weird cousin. Can't wait to learn about some new games to try!
Those were close enough that I had to check if they were the German brand name for Bikkuriman. I wish I had known about them earlier because those you can get in the states and it would have made a good substitute for checking them out.
Theres another version of wonderboy as well Here in brasil they released a version of it with characters from a popular national comic called turma da monica
I decided to try playing along with the series. Couple of footnotes: 3:56 The "Demiforce" English patch that's out there changes the sign back to "Monster Land," which is an odd choice, so I have to wonder whether the rest of the translation is faithful. I didn't look into it beyond that. 7:37 You can continue by holding any D-pad direction-not just up-while pressing start. 8:49 Going into a bar doesn't actually seem to reset the hourglass.
I knew this game was just a reskin of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. I didn't realize that was the only thing they really changed. The music is basically the same as Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
As someone who missed out on PC Engine (because European lol) and only got to play it via emulation it'd be good to know what's worth playing on this system. Bikkuriman World is one I played recently and I like the idea of an arcade-like action RPG, but design choices like the timer and linear stage progression detract from the console versions for me. I'd say that the NES version of Rygar perfected the concept, and everything that came afterwards could have taken some notes from that.
This game was my first time playing any version of Wonder Boy in Monster World and I just could not get into this one for some reason. I think I'm just really bad at it I remember one level inside with ice all over is where I get stuck at. Yet I can beat Saiyuuki World so I don't really get it. It is still a pretty neat port with a weird history. I always imagined this was made to show the Famicom could never do something this accurate to the Arcade. A game a couple episodes will now will be more aggressive about that but it's still interesting.
I love discovering and learning about in-game and especially Japanese trivia. For me the master system version remains a definitive edition, but if I ever decide to replay it I'm gonna go with this one.
Love Wonder Boy in Monster Land. Not as much as the next two games in the series, but it's a nice diversion. Never liked the floaty jumping, but it's passable.
not one I'm super familiar with (I think my favorite has to be Dragon's Curse, so looking forward to that episode!) this is gonna be a fun series definitely a ton of great games on PCE!
@@LdeinerProductionshis logic is that FDS is generally considered distinct enough and it fizzled out in the end while PC Engine CD is considered part of the same library and mostly took over from cards

It's PC Engine time! For a launch game, it is a solid port of the arcade game with an interesting tie-in.
You can really tell the graphic differences with this game compared to the Famicom and FDS. Also I'm finally caught up on your channel!
Good luck cataloguing the PC Engine/TurboGrafx library! Nice to see that your production values have heightened, too.
