That justification to not help Kuwait because the country is an "accident of history" is just nonsense. Kuwait became a sovereign country in the 1700s and was distinct from its neighbors going back to the 1500s. It existed as a small independent trading city state along the Persian Gulf, no different from Qatar or Bahrain. Really silly to suggest the country doesn't deserve independence.
Yeah, iraqi propaganda. But Kuwait began as a vassal to the khalidi emirate of eastern arabia in the 1700s. When the saudis annexed eastern arabia, Kuwait became more or less its own thing. Even though they became subjects to the ottomans and the british before gaining independence.
I remember when I was younger my dad would like to tell stories about his younger years one of the stories was in the early nineties he wanted to join the military so he can go serve in in the Gulf war but he took a bad injury in a high school football game that pretty much ended not only his football career but pretty much made sure he couldn't go to the Gulf
Hey mate, are you considering covering off on the non-arabs in Iraq, eg Kurds, Assyrians, Yazdi, etc. I like you "zero bullshit" apporoach, explaining things "how it is". Recently, listenng to another "Armchair Historian" *cough*, and was very very political in it's material.
@kingofcards9516 IMO he is lightweight, lacking nuance and often the whole picture. It falls into a lot of simplified, not particularly well explained, history videos you get on YT
Thank you for posting this. I have always wondered what the Soviet Union thought of the Gulf War even while taking its dying breathes. I have had a difficult time finding any material regarding the USSR's perspective.

42:35 Saddam threw his Hail Mary, what’s that supposed to mean? I’ve heard it used in a religious way but the way it’s used has no relevance to Saddam attacking Israel
@ I take it’s an American saying as I’ve never heard of it being used before and I’m a big football (soccer) fan. I support two teams my first love Liverpool (I am English) and my true love Juventus (Italian team from Turin) so I watch the English Premier League and Championship Division (second out of four pro leagues in England Premier League is the top) to see my local team Plymouth Argyle as well as Serie A (Italian top league) to see Juventus. I also watch Spain’s top league La Liga as they have some of the best teams in the world playing there like current club world champions Real Madrid and Barcelona and never has the phrase Hail Mary been said
In American football a "Hail Mary" is a last second throw with little chance of success when it's the only option to win the game as the clock expires. I suppose the best comparison would be attempting to score a goal from midfield or further as a last second attempt to win. People here use it colloquially for a desperate plan with little chance of success.
@ thank you for explaining that perfectly for a non American. Also the referee decides on when to blow the whistle in soccer, if a team is in an attacking position the referee will let play continue but soon as the goalie catches it or a player from the opposite team kicks the ball away it’s over. The match should last 90 minutes but then injury time gets added on and during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar players were made to play up to 100 minutes which is too long 4-5 minutes is standard. The Qatari World Cup is the only World Cup played in winter (fucking up Europes leagues which are the best in the world) since they couldn’t play in 56 degrees Centigrade or 138 degrees Fahrenheit for 100 minutes
No war is good, but as far as the American experience goes with the Gulf War, this was s good war. Minimal casualties, effective use of technological, superiority, leading a wide Coalition, cementing their status as the dominant superpower.
32:09 given Powell's attempt to cover up the 1968 My Lai massacre, it only makes sense for him to be opposed to a press presence on the ground. I still dont know if the middle east would be more stable if Hussein was able to keep Kuwait.

I watched a couple of videos on your channel and I have reached the conclusion that you are biased to your own country. That's understandable. This is evident in the way you always cling to the diplomatic message which are mostly euphemistic in nature... That's also evident in Lebanon video when you white-washed Israeli reponsibility for Sabra and Shatila massacre. When you said that the Kahane report was better than the MacBride commision report apparently because nobel prize winner Sean MacBride might have been anti-semitic......
