Totally stuck my camera on a book and pushed it to do these "slider" shots 😆 links in the description if you want to check out any of the lenses mentioned!

Really surprised you didn't mention the 20mm 1.7. That is definitely my most used lens. Followed by:
    Olympus 12mm f2
    Olympus 45mm f1.8
    Panny 45-150mm f3.5 or whatever
For macro, I bought the macro attachment for the 45mm lens. This works great and allows me to keep everything compact enough to fit in my medium size think tank turnstyle bag. I also use a fl300 mini flash with the tiny Korean remote flash attachment thingy.

    Hi Emily!
I would love to see in this channel a Review to the Chinese Bokeh King!, The Kamlan 50mm F1.1 for micro 4/3rds Is manual focus and is cheap but I heard very cool stuff about that little baby.
    Best regards.

Another great video Emily. Lovin’ the lens lineup. The one lens that I’d add for travel and a great companion to your 25mm is the LUMIX 14-140 f/3.5-5.6. Not the fastest in the world or weather sealed but a real Swiss Army knife if a lens when you’re out for a (bright) day and don’t know what to expect as the focal length range is incredible and it’s very sharp! Great when you just want to sling the camera over your shoulder and want to be ready for (almost) anything!

Thank you for this video, Emily. The Olympus 17mm, f1.8 is also one of my favorite lenses. I also like the Laowa 7.5mm f 2.0 for stunning landscapes, and I really can recommend the Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro. It is amazing, not just as a macro lens.

I can't afford the fancy lenses for now, so I use:
    12-32 kit lens
    45-150 kit lens
    9mm Olympus body cap lens
    50mm f/4 Pentax macro
I'd love to have the 15mm, 40-150/2.8 and a faster normal range zoom of some type.

The Olympus 45 f/1.8 is an amazing piece of kit. I sold mine in a fit of madness, but might need to replace it. It's always interesting to hear other people's favourites, and two of my personal must haves are the sigma art 19 and 60mm primes. Stunningly sharp, as well as being dirt cheap. Despite having switched to canon M50 last year, because I love dual pixel af for video, I've recently found myself gravitating back to M43 in the guise of the GX80, and may just need to get a second one........🤔

When I used my g9 for photography my fav lenses were olympus 75 1.8, sigma 30 1.4 and sigma 16 1.4. Now that I only use it for video I wanted to get Panasonic lenses to help with the video af performance and o wanted to go cheaper as video doesn’t have to be as ultra sharp ... so my workhorse is the panny 14-140 and when I need low light ... I have a couple cheap primes .. panasonic 25 1.7 and 42.5 1.7

I keep holding back on getting the 17mm 1.8 but one of these days, I am just going to get it. As you said, the focal length is covered by zooms, but obviously not @ 1.8 and as you mentioned, it just LOOKS so good on the smaller bodies. My favorite lens right now is the 45mm 1.8 but I am considering changing that to a 56mm 1.4 sigma. Havent decided yet :)

What do you use it for, if you don't mind me asking?
I've tried taking it on walks in the hope of seeing dragonflies etc while out. But I find it's way too narrow for taking pictures of landscapes and way too wide for specific wildlife (birds etc), if that makes sense.
I've heard several people say they use it for portraits but I also have the 45mm which is much better for that.
So for me it's only use is Macro (not that I'm complaining) which is a shame as I love the lens so much 😂
Have you also got the 30mm Macro? I'm hoping to get that one day so I can take it on such walks as I think the closer to "standard" focal length would be more useful in that situation. Not as a replacement for the 60mm, but as a companion...

    • @IljaSara

@@stuartnelson3202 When I am walking in the mountains ans not keen on birds (in flight) I take the 60 mm both for lanscape and "macro" shooting. It is so confortable to change the focal distance in one turn.
Yes I missed some shots where I could not increase the distance, but while in the mountains there are certain reqirements for readyness and free hands...

I don't have many lenses, but favorite ones are:
12-35/f2.8 as very versatile lens. I don't like lens flare and bokeh. Since dual IS and 12-60 i don't think this one is a must have. Just one of them.
12-60/f3.5-5.6 as sometimes even more versatile lens for travelling. Very cheap as kit lens and surprisingly good.
45/f1.8 as portrait lens also suitable for kids (only Olympus lens I have). I guess this one is must have for MFT users (or similar from Panasonic)
20/f1.7 as good lens for indoor/social events. I think it can be changed for any 17 or 25 lens, but this one is small. Can't recommend it for video.
    Not my favorite:
14-45mm/f3.5-5.6 from 2010. On GF1 one side was not sharp and image stabilization was worse than on 12-35 that replaced it.
45-200mm/? This one is quite heavy, big and not sharp above 120mm so I rarely use it and even take it with myself. And sometimes I regret not having it. No complains about image quality to 100mm.
    On consideration list:
Laowa 7.5/f2 (but i don't think it's worth money due to very specific use)
    45-175 to replace 45-200
Some kind of macro lens, but same problem as Laowa (maybe 60mm Olympus?)

  • @soundknight
    @soundknight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think Panasonic missed the mark with the Leica lenses, they should have kept the specs the same across all versions of the summilux, e.g..
    1. Weather sealing
    2. F1.4
    3. Special lens coating
    4. Metal finishes (hood too)
    5. OIS (Even the wide bodies)
    6. Aperture rings
    7. AF/MF Switch
    8. OIS on off switch
    9. Same quality manual focus electronics
    10. Mechanical aperture
    11. Regular updates, hell any updates would have been nice...
    12. Accessible filter screw on all lens bodies (Even ultra wide lenses)
These are the expectations for a Leica branded lens...bring them on.

My kit right now is exclusivly Lumix-based, matching your 12-35, 35-100, and the 25mm 1.4. The only change is that I use the 1.7 42.5 from Pany. I barely if ever use use other brands of lenses so I can steal the advantages of 1 billion axis stabilization.

I just got the Oly 75mm F1,8- super , I use a lot the 100-300mm F4-5,6 for birds a lot, the rest are less used. I have adapters for most of my vintage FF glass- Konica -AR; Olympus -OM; Nikon -F; Minolta -MD; M-42 ; C-mount for 16mm cine lenses. Also the electronic adapter for the older 4/3rd lenses , (I have 2 zooms of the pro series, and they are great and weather sealed) which tells the IBIS the focal length. Still wanting the adapter for the Pentax A110 lenses, for I have all of them.

Really love your videos!! And this one is super helpful.Love these tiny lenses. Usually shoot a mix of landscape, street and wildlife. On a budget, so I’m using an EM-1 and currently only have Panasonic 45-150mm f4-5.6 and the 25ml 1.7. I have a birthday coming up though and I’m wondering what to get next. Do I I need the 35-100mm (instead/ as well as the prime?) or should I go with 12-35mm? Ideally I wouldn’t have to switch out lens on any single day trip. Or trade them both in and get a 12-150mm? Hah!

Currently doing a balancing act between my Fujifilm X-H1 and newly acquired Olympus E-M1 Mark II. Only have the 12-40f2.8 Lens right now, and am leaning towards getting a 35-100f2.8 for the long end, and getting rid of the (near equivalent) focal length on the x-h1 (my 55-200). Also looking to trade my Fuji 90mm f2 for a 16mm f1.4, and then get the Sigma 56mm f1.4 for the Olympus.

I do mostly party/event photography. People at night or on concerts, ... water gunfight is the most funny event i covered :)... So i have three camerabags, two Olympus bodies and about the lenses...
    Large Bag:
I use this set when I dont know what exactly to expect. This kit consists of Olympus EM-5 Mark III, Olympus 12-40 F2.8 PRO, Lumix G X Vario 35-100 Mark II and Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 mark II.
Olympus 12-40 is universal all rounder, Lumix 35-100 is a medium tele and portrait lens (possible focal lenght is similar to portrait lenses for FF) Leica DG 25mm serves as secondary/backup all-rounder, with better bokeh and speed.
    Medium bag:
My secondary body is Olympus M10 and lens here is Leica DG Vario Elmarit 12-60 F2.8-4.0. Those serve as a backup equipment, but I often replace body for M5. The philosophy here is one body and one zoom.
    Small Bag:
M10 or M5 Mk III + Leica DG 25mm. This is kit when i dont want to indimidate people with big camera. Here is still place for one lens or small flash.
Few other lenses which i add to each as needed:
    Olympus 45mm f1.8
Olympus 75mm f1.8 - One of the most sharpest MFT lenses (the other being Leica 25mm :D). Little bit bigger, but still light enough to be added to first two sets. Unfortunately this one is very underused, despite its qualities.

I concur. The Lumix 25mm F1.4 is fantastic. Please get the OM adapter. The OM 50mm 1.8 is such a good all round lens and has heavenly colour and boker. The 50mm with the OM 28mm and the Lumix 25 makes a good video set. I'd Skip the om 24 and 30mm. I found them disappointing.

The 45mm f1.8 Olympus is sharp indeed! In a standard kit lens, the 12-32mm Lumix is great -- cheap, but image making ability is very good. I do have the Lumix 25mm f1.7 which is pretty good, and very inexpensive. I am considering the Lumix 14mm, on sale here in the States, for $198 and the Lumix 30mm macro, which test wise does superb, and is on sale for $298, once again a tempting deal. If you have tried these, let me know your thoughts on the two. I have the Olympus 14-42 R II kit, which is good and the Lumix 45-150mm which is very good up to most of the range, but gets only good when at full zoom -- good enough. I am thinking the Lumix ( made in Japan ) 14mm at f2.5 and 30mm f2.8 are indeed fast enough for my street photography, where I am not shooting full wide aperture anyway. The 30mm doubles as a macro lens. -Loren lorenschwiderski.smugmug.com/

On my GH4 I use a speed booster with a 24mm Nikkor a is f2.8 which is good for crowds or confined spaces, I think it works out to about 36mm but I could be wrong. I also use a non speed boosted 45mm f2 Zeiss Planar from a Contax G1 which is superbly sharp and is effectively a fast 90mm. I like to use my Nikkor f2.8 135mm with a 2x converter which makes it a 540mm for moon shots.

Don't know if you have done it yet; but I find my Panasonic 30mm f2.8 macro gets more use than the Olympus 60mm. The 60mm drives me nuts having to fiddle around with that switch on the side to get it to focus on anything. It is especially distracting with manual focus. Switch the Pan 30 to manual focus and there is only the chore of cranking the focus ring. With the Oly 60mm; not only are you cranking away at the ring. But then you realise nothing is happening and you have to mess about with the switch as well. The Pan 30 is probably slightly sharper and a less painful experience when you are kneeling on nettles or lying on your tummy in the mud. Plus I already had a 40 year old Pentax 100 f4 macro and that is still about as sharp as either of these two.

    Thanks Emily!
Now I usually putting the Lumix 12-60 (the cheaper one) on my G85, which just replaced former 14-140ii two months ago. I love its sharpness, compactness, light-weight, weather seal and overall feeling together with the camera body. It's an outstanding all-round lens.
Lumix 14-140ii was mostly used in the past three years, especially in travelings. I find it sharp, and extremely compact considering its 10x zooming range. I have to say it's a reliable partner. However I got rid of it for lack of weather-seal, which I have recognized quite important in outdoor conditions. I hope Panasonic to offer kindness adding it on the third version.
I also own the Olympus 9-18, and I'm happy with how small it is. It deliver good image quality compared to the Lumix 12-60 in center, with slight roughness in corners. However, I don't like its lock-mechanism. It makes inconvenience when mounting the lens. Personally I also feel uncomfortable for the external zooming, but I totally understand for its price tag.

I know you mostly keep it native, but you've really gotta check out the sigma 18-35 with a speedbooster. That is the lens I use the most for paid work. Behind that are my Panasonic 15mm f/1.7 ( i use this alot for TH-cam), and my Laowa 7.5mm. It also looks like Laowa is going to be releasing some more M43 mount lenses this year that could be really interesting.
A lens that I really wanna get my hands on is the Olympus 12-40. I've used it on Panasonic and the image it produces is almost magical. I've also seen tests that seem to indicate the autofocus works better on the GH5 than the 12-35 does for video.

@@MicroFourNerds You should try the Sigma Art 30mm f1.4 with a Canon mount focal reducer. Much lighter (being a prime naturally) than the 18-35 and almost as sharp IMO. Slightly soft wide open but it less than F1.0 wide open! Nobody ever talks about this lens but it's fairly compact for a Sigma and is a good value for the money.

I’ve owned a lot of m4/3 lenses including a kit of 6 vintage OM lenses, several Panasonic primes and zooms, several Rokinon and Chinese primes and finally the perfect kit, “for me”. Most used and almost always mounted: Olympus 12mm f2 on an E-P5 and 75mm f1.8 on another E-P5 with an EVF, next most used the 7.5mm f2 Laowa, then the 7.5mm Rokinon Fisheye, seldom used 17mm f1.8 and 25mm f1.8 Olympus’s. All lenses are f2.0 or faster and all take 46mm filters except the fish and the 75. BTW I went from APSC to M4/3 and I shoot mostly for myself but also for a designer, the big hotel room wall pics and sometimes murals. I also do interiors and exteriors for some hotel websites.

There are some great Olympus lenses out there but I am reluctant to buy one as I heard that they don't work so well with Panasonic's DFD focusing system. I am sure they would work fine in manual focus mode but I would not be happy with just that. What are your experiences in using Olympus lenses on Panasonic bodies? Do they focus accurately? I would love to hear your comments. Thanks!

My most used lens is the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro. With the 2x teleconverter, its full frame equivalent magnification is .84x, so it's almost like having a 600mm macro lens on a full frame camera! (Technically, the lens itself is .21x magnification, which becomes .42x with a teleconverter, and that is the full frame equivalent of .84x, so almost a macro lens.) It's the main lens I use when I'm kayaking, birdwatching, or even taking photos of insects, frogs, flowers, and that sort of thing. If I'm photographing an eagle or a beaver and a dragonfly lands on the deck of my kayak, I can quickly grab a close-up without having to switch lenses. I also have the Olympus 60mm macro, which is I have started using for insects, flowers, etc. and it is outstanding too. Usually, if I'm going for a short hike in the forest, those will be the two lenses I take.
I just got the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 Pro for indoor portraits with strobes. I haven't had a chance to use it for that yet, but I'm looking forward to not having to change lenses anymore. For outdoor pet portraits where I may want to blur the background, I use the following lenses:
Pana/Leica 8-18mm f/2.8-4 (Also perfect for real estate photography.)
Sigma 16mm f/1.4 (Yes, it's huge and heavy, but the IQ is excellent and so is the close focus distance.)
    Panasonic 25mm f/1.7
Panasonic 42.5mm f/1.7 (Sharper and MUCH less chromatic aberration than the Olympus.)
    Sigma 56mm f/1.4 (Coming soon!)
Olympus 75mm f/1.8 (Yes, the IQ is every bit as good as people make it out to be!)

When I got into M43 i got myself an Olympus M10, a kit with M.Zuiko 14-42 F3,5-5,6. First stand-alone lens i got was M.Zuiko 45mm F1.8. Its great for portraits, but i actually had only few occasions to use it. Those three items comprise my "small kit".
Then i got myself M. Zuiko 12-40 F2.8 PRO. This all-round zoom is almost perfect. Fast, does not lose focus while zooming.
Then i got myself M.Zuiko 75mm F1.8 which is THE sharpest lens for M43 and great portrait or product lens. The downside is you have to be bit further from the subject :). Very underused, but almost perfect for shooting in clubs or on music concerts.
At this point i did not planned to get another lenses and for 4 years I did not. Then i purchased M5 Mark III and i realized i can go pro with the equiment, with few adjustments.
First "adjustment" was Lumix G Vario 35-100 F2.8 II. Equivalents by Olympus were however too heavy and big. I did some city photography with it and surprisingly... its a very nice portrait lens. Bokeh, distortion and vignetting i has can be surprisingly beneficial. This paired with 12-40 M.Zuiko is my "PRO kit", as I plan to do reports with them. Everything in this set is weather sealed.
The last lens i decided to buy is 25mm F1,4 Summilux. I realized i want to have a simple standard prime lens, which will be faster than the zoom, but also might serve as a backup lens in case of an accident. This and 75mm kinda replace my zoom lenses.

My most used has to be the Olympus 12-100, so versatile and sharp. I use it on a G9 mainly. The only issue is it’s a lazy lens, I such a good reach, makes you lazy, but then again the reach can be artistically beneficial too. The next favourite is the Olympus 17.5 prime, great on the GX9 for street, and not to bulky, both great AF. For sport, love motorbikes, I always take the Pano 100-400, a bit slow but with the ibis and iOS combined using a monopod she works fine even at full reach. This year, even with Lockdown, I have been getting most pleasure from my 100-400mm lens while walking the dog round my local park. Even with the lens at 400mm glued to my GH5 I can get very stable hand held footage of moving subjects. Since I got my GH5, which replaced the GH4 that I killed this year filming Storm Ciara, my gimbal has sat unloved in its box. Gave away a body and 12-50 to a friend. I'm amateur and shoot stills - landscape, street, portraits mostly. Most used P/L 25f1.4, oly 12f2 and oly 75f1.8 (all keepers). For travel/bad weather use with em1 mk 1 I use oly 14-150, macro oly 60f2.8, also weatherproof. These are my essentials. For fun I've a battered voighlander 25f0.95 and oly 75-300. When I go light I can get by on oly 17f1.8 (love, including flaws) and 45f1.8 (on loan to dad!), which are both light and small, and go well with a lighter body. Still have 14-42 ez don't use much but is good, especially with autocap. One day I'll probably get an IS pro zoom for travel, maybe 12-100f4 at which point 14-150 will go but I'm still on the em1 mk 1 so I don't think I can get the full 6.5 stops with it.

I got rid of the O17/1.8 along the kit zoom O12-50/3.5-6.3 and replaced them with an O12-40/2.8 Pro. I got ~ 400 € from the sale and spent ~ 500 € on the Pro zoom. So far, great move. I replaced two lenses that I barely used by a lens with the ability to become a staple on my camera. Love it so far. I still have a reasonable range of primes (P14/2.5, P25/1.7 & O45/1.8) as well as the O9-18 and O40-150R. A balanced amateur kit to cover most indoor and outdoor situations, except sports and birding, not my bag.
Dropping the 17/1.8 was a relief, once that anchor was out (however nice it was) it helped me focus on how to cover the focal range I wanted.

I currently have the g85 with the 12-60 kit, the 14mm pancake, 45-150 and the 25mm 1.7. my main use case is travel video. I'm finding the 12-60 quite a challenge to use with a variable nd to get shutter 180 in daylight (unusable at night). The 25mm is great for portraits/close up b-roll but not a very good length to capture the scapes I need to while travelling and food on the table. The 14mm is of course very versatile and is the (only) one I use at night, but I do wish I had the option of a bit more zoom in or out. The 45-150 I never use lol. If I were to add one more lens before my travels this summer would you recommend the Lumix 12-35 or the Oly 9-18?? Being able to capture vast expanses with the 9mm is tempting, but then again the fast and constant aperture on the Lumix really does seem like the panache for all my low light ails.

i'll have to try some adapted Canon FD lenses but i love my adapted lenses too much: Olympus 50mm 1.8, Tokina 28-70mm 2.8-4.3 Macro & Sun Zoom 80-200mm 4.5 Macro. i still love my Panasonic 14mm 2.5 because it does keep everything compact but it's not a focal length i use too often. next up will be either a nice 25mm, the fisheye you mentioned or a wide zoom.

Olympus 42,5mm F1,8 or sigma 56mm F1.4? F2.8 Panasonic zooms or the Panaleica? I love your review ^^

You are a tough cookie to sell those lenses :-) I couldn't! Last year I bought the Olympus OM-D E-M10 MKII with two kit lenses and the 25mm f1.8. The 25mm f1.8 is great. The 40-150mm R is incredible for its price. The one I use most though, is the M.Zuiko 14-42mm EZ.
The lens is quite slow with a f3.5 maximum aperture, but with relative high ISO capability and great stabilization still very usable. Not the sharpest, but neither is it very soft. Paired with my camera and an automatic lens cover, the package is small enough to carry it on my hip in a pouch. Ready for everyday use!
Pitty it is hardly mentioned or reviewed seperately from a camera! (Except by Rob Trek and Digimanie.cz) With its 28-84mm range, in full frame terms, it is very versatile. On Flickr you can see it being used from macro-ish to landscape-ish purposes. Hardly any abberation, flaring or barrel distortion. Apparently it seems to be good for video as well.

Most used lens is (still) the Olympus 14-54mm 4/3 mount lens. The 19, 30 & 60mm Sigma lenses are in second. Actually the 30mm is most used followed by the 19mm.

I love the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 pancake and the old Four Thirds 12-60 2.8-4 on my EM1...These lenses stay on my camera most of the time...My next portrait will be though with the Kamlan 50mm1.1...I'm highly impressed with that lens on m4/3rds
