Johnny vs. Mega Man 4 & 5

- With so many sequels being released on a single console, does Mega Man 4 and 5 manage to sustain the magic that made the previous two games the smash hits they were? What perils await the Blue Bomber now that the likes of Dr. Wily are nowhere to be seen? The NES journey continues with Mega Man 4 and 5!

Oh younger Johnny, there’s so much we should tell you and yet, tragically, we can’t
Lol
I was hoping someone would bring that up XD
To be fair, he does address his support for Mighty No. 9 in the review for that game, and he makes a good point.
Back then, we all had no idea the game would flop. Kickstarter games failing wasn't quite as well-known back then and what we were hearing from Keiji Inafune was promising.
However the game's development fell into a slump due to bad decisions and questionable marketing so it's not like Johnny could've predicted that.
Well, we do have 30XX at least.

"It's better than nothing." - Keiji Inafune
Really? I thought the weapons in megaman 4 were all pretty darn useful. Except for the skull shield, that one SUCKS. The pharaoh shot is slightly bigger and can be aimed in 6 directions, but doesn't have unlimited weapon energy like the metal blade so it isn't overpowered. The dust crusher packs a punch and is likely to damage nearby enemies. The drill bomb I just find satisfying to use sometimes. Maybe it's fun to blow stuff up, I don't know. The rain flush can get you out of sticky situations. The ring boomerang is really nice for multiple targets as it's big and pierces through enemies. the dive missile is nice for completely removing aim front he equation but doesn't really work against shielded enemies. The flash stopper freezes time and actually gives you a way to attack enemies.
***** I agree, megaman 5 I felt was a step back in terms of weapons. I do wish that capcom would remake the classic games on modern consoles so they can fix up issues the games had, like making the metal blade not overpowered, and making it so the top spin doesn't suck so much, and change the less enjoyed bosses. (Like the turret boss and the yellow devil) I can't see them selling that well though. Looking at the poor sales of megaman 10, it makes sense that capcom hasn't made a new megaman game. And yet here we are complaining to them that they aren't making something that will cost them money.
Same. I love Mega Man 4 and the weapons are one of the main reasons
Bruh, Metal Man would like to have a conversation with you.
ben dover What for? I'll just two shot him with his own weapon.
I feel that, apart from Mega Man 9, all the weapons are pretty solid and can see used on pretty much any other stage you play next at some point. Skull barrier is also the best shield weapon in the NES games (Junk barrier being my personal favourite)

WesleyB Crowen Yeah, I like the mega buster too. I don't know why it gets so much hate.
eRe-watching these reviews while waiting on the X8 review really is...Reflective. Especially after Mighty No.9 came out.
Honestly, I think you're underrating Mega Man 4's weapons by a fair bit; they're honestly really strong for the most part. Skull Barrier is the only really bad one, and other than that, they hit really hard, they fill a lot of niches, and their ammo consumption is pretty reasonable. Compared to Mega Man 2, where pretty much everything except Metal Blade and Quick Boomerang was useless, it's probably the most consistent weapon catalog of the NES games.
Well he clearly didn’t need them as much, no big deal
The only weapons I get use out of is Drill Man, Bright Man, Toad Man & Pharoah Man cause they were pretty powerful. Not O.P. like the Metal Blade. But not as weakling like the ones from MM5. But the rest of MM4 weapons aren't that useful either.
It's funny, i absolutely loved Mega man Man 1&2 around the time they came out back during the tail end of the 80's, but 4 is when the franchise started to get a bit stale, which was around 91. What i can't stand about 4 is it's grating whiny tinny soundtrack(So much "TSH TSH TSH' in the music), Dr. cossak's castle, and when the music stops completely whenever a robot masters life bar 'slowl'y fills up before you fight them. Who in their right mind thought that was a good idea? Overall, it didn't reach the heights of even MM3.
2, 1, 7(Underrated) & 9 are my personal favourites.
8 would be better if they re-released the saturn version(Which has better environmental effects and boss fights against Cut man & wood man) and redubbed all of the voice acting. As is, I'd rather play Mega Man & Bass on Super Famicom. ;) That's a wonderful gem so many people have missed out on, and it's easily the better game of the two.
Another great review dude. Always enjoyable!
I can understand why MM4 and MM5 can be known as the black sheep, but I kinda find them pretty good games. I appreciate MM2 but I personally don't find it the best game out of the classic series. I really liked MM5 but haven't had much experience with MM4 due to what you said- ridiculous enemy placements.
4 is actually my favorite, with 6 close behind. Though 7 may overthrow 4 with time.
"What the hell is a star man?" Mario feels betrayed.
Mega Man 4 Is My Favorite Classic MM Game.
It's a decent game. Nothing special. Better than 1 & 5 in my honest opinion. But nowhere near as good as 2, 3 & 6.
@Irrelevant BMB Stop recommending nico as he was some kind of megaman god lmao
He just has his (biased sometimes) opinions about the games and what he considers good and bad designs.
Me, for example cant say that 4 is better than 3 even tho 4 is one of the best ones
Just the fact that nico bashed on the wily stages in 3 because they were short in contrast to never say anything to every single level in 4 (that were way shorter than 3's levels) or even pretend that 4 doesnt have input problems (Which its not fucking truth) proofs that theres in fact some bias on his analysis
Theres much things he overlooks when he does his videos (also 6's level design isnt "Samey" lmao)
Hes not a god after all, good critic tho
@Irrelevant BMB But the doc stages arent the wily stages bruh.
Or you are talking about one or another
Im making statements exclusively about the wily stages, that were in fact THE FIRST wily stages to got the pacing and structure right.
About the input problems, yes it has man.
Not just ot eats the inputs if you press any buttons fast in a screen transition (try press the charge button when transitioning a screen for example)
But also has a very strange thing with shooting in opposite directions when you do faster, almost anytime i try to do it the game simple doesnt understand the command and shoots in the wrong direction. In fact the problems with inputs in 4 are WAY easier to notice than in 3 at the point that most people i know never had any problems with 3.
@Irrelevant BMB no, im not
I literally played all the way throught the entire series twice recently and including speedrun challenges to it
Dont believe me? Test by yourself
Each one of the things i said are not just true but happens every single time you do what i said you to.
Try to compare the transitions input for 4,5 and 6
Go ahead, do a screen transition and charge your buster
Or even better, do some boss battles and turn around to use your buster
I thought 4 was good. But not great. Like Johnny says, some of the level designs are really obnoxious.
It took me years after watching this review to realize this, but Kalinka is ALSO a music reference
Megaman 4 is my favourite in the series
MM4 used to be my favorite. Mega Man 7 is my favorite of the classic series.
megaman V will always have a special place in my heart simply because it was the very first classic megaman game i ever played and fully beaten. i love the soundtrack and gameplay and altough bringing nothing new to the table to veteran megaman players was still fresh and new for me.
Mega Man 2 and 3 feel like platformers. Not sure what it is about 5 that's different, but when I play it it feels like an adventure. Star Man's in outer space, Napalm Man's jungle feels steamy and threatening, Charge Man's stage is a goddamn train, Wave Man has that awesome Marine Bike segment... MM5 introduced actual ENVIRONMENTS, something you can thank MM6 for perfecting.
As always though, Johnny, you don't fail to get the facts straight. Many, many kudos on that front.
Fuck yeah Mighty Nr. NEIN!

@@esmooth919 I think I actually used the charge shot in 5 instead of the power stone against whoever was weak to it. It really is just a horrific weapon. But you're right. 5 in my opinion has the worst weapons in the entire classic series
How do you _somehow top the top spin_ in terms of bad?
Yeah. 5 has the worst weapons in the series. And I thought Top Spin was the only worst weapon in any Mega Man games
I've played Mega man 4 and can safely say, yes, the fact that Toad Man's pattern resets with just one power pellet was intentional, because if you don't do the easy way of beating him he'll do a unavoidable screen nook, which is guaranteed damage
I'd say it's better the mega buster loses the charge when getting hit in MM5 but that's just me. I'm a special snowflake.
Agreed. It helps to balance out the fact that you now have an attack comparable in damage to the boss weapons at all times and with unlimited ammo (especially considering the power boost it received in comparison to its debut in the previous game). And even disregarding that, it makes you earn that extra-powerful shot in a more profound way than simply asking you to hold B; now you have to line it up correctly while maneuvering skillfully enough to avoid oncoming damage at the same time.
