      This is something a lot of people miss, actually. If I remember correctly, something like half of the lifetime environmental impact comes from just the manufacturing of a vehicle. Extending the lifetime of the vehicle is a very obviously easy way to *truly* improve what we're doing. Instead, people go through cars like they go through smart phones and end up throwing away perfectly good vehicles that, if maintained, will continue to survive on the roads for many more years.

      Well they could be like Japan and charge a tax for age of the car and mileage. The older and more miles the more tax you pay. That's why cars have such low miles from Japan. It's typically more affordable to buy a new car every couple years. But I would hate that.

    • @fredpinczuk7352
      @fredpinczuk7352 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Into conspiracy theories he! Good for you, you'll be on the path to "flat earth" in no time.
      EPA doesn't have an issue with the tech, it as an issue how the tech can be applied to road cars and used to defeat or delete emissions for road cars.
      If you remember (or perhaps choose to ignore), VW was caught with very sophisticated software that would allow their cars to detect if it was being tested for emissions vs. on the road driving. Thus running a secondary program that would ensure to pass emissions. GM did it, BMW did it, Porsche did it, Audi did it and Mercedes as well. They all settled with the US and EU government for large sums. VW lied to congress and now their former executive is serving 7 years, their head of software engineering was just extradited from Croatia and awaiting the same fate.
      The fact that this system ties into a car existing ECM and "hides" inside the case is problematic. Had this been designed to be a complete replacement, or even redesigned into a new exterior case would be the correct solution. Hence why the EPA does no sue re-sellers and mfg from Haltech, ECUmaster and many others.
      It has nothing to do with "losing money". And everything to do with simply not following the established rules. I don't like them, I think they are draconian in some cases. But those are the current laws in place.
      PS And the earth isn't flat.

      Its nothing to do with 'right to repair'. With the exception of Tesla, the manufacturers arent actively trying to stop you or making it almost impossible from repairing your own car. You can repair your own car all you want or take your car down to your local mechanic to do it for you.
      Imagine if all these independent businesses (both retail and repair/work shop) had to close because people like Mercedes, VW, Honda, Kia, Volvo, Hyundai -- Everybody stopped allowing their parts to be sold to and by independent businesses and forced you to go to them for parts, repairs and servicing?? -- In this scenario right to repair would be absolutely massive because without it would mean monopolisation and pretty much the death of the independent auto industry.

      @kasuraga 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've already done that. I rebuilt my engine and had to run it on the stock ecu during break in so I wouldn't have to worry about the tune (and the ecu I had socketed ended up having the main cpu fail on it) mpg was pretty piss poor tbh, like, 20-25mpg. I never smogged it with the stock ecu cause I didn't trust it would pass (on the rebuilt engine). With s300 I got it tuned to run honestly way smoother by having it run open loop 100% of the time on my own tune that I spent a good 3 months tuning on the street for drivability, I would get about 30mpg+ and it absolutely nailed it on the smog test. Before the rebuild it barely would pass the smog test and I'd have to pull a lot of timing out, etc to get it to pass.
      This was on a 1990 integra 4 door with a stock b18b1. Compared to the stock obd0 system my car came with, the obd1 setup with s300 is 100x better. The car runs way smoother, gets better fuel economy, and tests on smog way lower than the factory setup. With these old honda's, upgrading their computers can only be a good thing.

    Sharing a personal story about EPA bull: In high school I drove a 1977 Ford F-150 with a 351M motor. At the time in Alaska we had to have an EPA inspection every 2 years. The inspection had two parts, 1st they would pop the hood and look for anything "not stock" if there was one aftermarket part or piece under the hood, it was an automatic fail. 2nd they would put a probe in the tailpipe and measure the CO2 and other stuff coming out of it. My truck never had a problem passing the emissions check, according to them it was running perfectly.... but if you got behind the truck going down the road you could tell it was burning way rich. It was so bad that one day on the way to work my muffler literally blew up due to unburnt fuel accumulating in it.. But there was nothing I could do, the stock two barrel carb didn't have adjustable jets and due to the emissions program I couldn't put a different carb on the truck... Finally the emissions program was ended here in Alaska so I put a Holly 4 barrel with electric choke (faaaaaaaaancy) and an aluminum high rise intake on there. Whatta ya know the truck no longer ran rich as shit and I even saw a couple MPG improvement! Yet if the emissions program had been going, I would have gotten an automatic fail..... Just another example of the EPA getting in the way of itself.
