  • Jonny Craig's FREE Course:
    "How To Find Your Voice & Let It Kill You"
    www.mymusicalv...
    Learn to develop runs and agility in your voice with Jonny Craig! Here's more about Jonny's free course!
    Few vocalists have had the opportunity to collaborate with and front three successful bands. Not many singers can span genres with their vocal chops and melody sense like Jonny can.
    There have been many opportunities and obstacles... And in the midst of (and largely because of) battles with addiction and direction, Jonny continues to grow and discover new ways his voice can work for him.
    Does he do calculated exercises? No. Does he have special concoctions that keep his voice in shape? No. Has he ever studied with someone or 'trained' in his voice? No.
    He has learned through listening, borrowing, acting on inspiration and leaning into musical energy in unique ways.
    He has cracked the code on how to connect emotional intensity, struggle and soul-digging mind/body connection.
    His result has been a textured, agile and simultaneously angelic and chaotic voice that continues to be refined and featured in all sorts of great music.
    As you join us for this free course... What will YOUR result be? Sign up to find out...

Growing up, Jonny was a huuuge huge vocal inspiration/influence for me as I was in the early stages of "learning" how to sing and I would always get discouraged and think "you'll never sound like that." Which is true, but I'm learning to not have that deter me because of the reasons that was outlined during the course. This was cool -- I hope you guys do more in the future.

  • @Bobby_101

    Chris's voice sound more heavy and pushy. I had a big revelation when I realized, that the more "nasal and thin" and light I make my voice, the better the vocal movement.
    And once I have a good grasp on very light, and easy vocal technique... then I start introducing more volume but not with pushing, but by increasing the resonance.. which needs specific practice, to hone in on.
    It makes your voice sound loud and powerful yet light, without pushing at all, you find it just between your throat tone and nasal tone. You can get that by focusing on your palate.
    I'v been searching for years for that tone actually, I always sounded too heavy, and wondered what is it that makes some singers voice sound so light. And in simple terms, it was using the nose and resonance more then the throat.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great observations!

    • @vegeta1885
      @vegeta1885 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Light? Yes. Nasal and thin is always no. Your voice can be light, while taking full advantage of your resonant cavities. It's just always easier to thin it to reach a note but that's not the final goal.
      For certain songs or styles its good to have that "voice" but you should be able to do both.

    • @Bobby_101
      @Bobby_101 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vegeta1885 Nasal and thin is just the terms I use to explain it. It's not literally nasal, but you just have to think in terms of nasal, to find it. And once you find it, you push it back toward full sounding, but keeping the new position which makes you sound more free.
      So the end result does not sound nasal or weak at all, it just sounds like you are not having a hard time singing the notes.

But then in the second lesson , Jonny sang the first line of "the past should stay dead" and I was like "Holy meatballs, he really sounds like the recording". Chris tried to do it his way and I really liked it. I'm looking forward to the full course.
    One question though, Chris: I noticed that your voice gets a squeaky character at a certain point. This is not meant in a negative way, it's just that my voice does the same thing and I wonder if there's anything, I could do to get rid of it. Everytime I try to dampen it with a lowered larynx ,I feel a lot of tension in my throat.

    Oddly enough I’ve always done runs going side to side with my jaw/mouth versus up and down haha. Up and down seems to give a bit more control over it though. Love videos like this.

    Revised j.Craig.
    I identify with so so much of J.Craig’s story…. Possessing pretty unique gift, (not music for me). A bright future ahead of me…. I lacked the motivation, self-discipline, and and tenacity found in somebody young and hungry. I was young and that was it….. but due (roughly) in equal parts; to bad choices, unforeseeable circumstances, misfortunes and A pretty indulgent, self seeking and impetuous attitude about literally everything. I racked up quite the the bill. But luckily they started a tab for me; and broke me off not once, but twice…. Totaling nearly 8 years of my life…. JUST. For. Using. so began my disappointing, headfirst dive into my debaucheries, and coming of age… before being incarcerated for the majority my 20s not for anything in particular JUST. simply. using. I turned 21 alone… In solitary confinement, 23.5 hr LOCKDOWN getting in trouble in My adult life was affectively over before it started as far as having a “career goes. I became a felon at 18 for some thing I did when I was 17 and had thohunger and an unfulfilled sense of it and unfulfilled destiny… Everything about Johnny Craig makes me love him more. He’s just a person! Perfectly imperfect… like any of us … If I’m not mistaken.
    Take our loving teacher for example; while exhibiting an exemplary (what has now come to be known as) yo-yo jaw technique… He’s acting like a goober but in such an authentic and warm unapologetic way it’s impossible not to appreciate the warmth that emanate off of him. I’ve absolutely loved this video I watched it because I want to sing like Johnny Craig dammit ! And yet, after having discovered this channel though. I’ve watched many of your other videos as well and I do feel like my voice is getting better so this interview because it was somebody so special to me and my musical grimoire . I’m so doing, it has given me more memorable and honest advice and suggestion than I’ve probably retained for most anything else I’ve ever seen on TH-cam from a coach. @theshapeofmusic Thanks for the content.
    @jonnycraig if you read this…
    I would fucking love to meet you brother and just talk shit about how bad things can be and how beautiful they can be too. I’d love to pick your brain, hmu literally anytime, a high brow convo about mullet maintenance, and the nuanced art of a perfect stach mcnasty mustache for the ladies 😂😂 if you’re within 200 miles of AZ or Huntington Beach CA LOL.
    That turned into a bit of a tangent…. But I am in a rather dark place collectively rn. and I feel like to be heard IS and WILL BE an unequivocal part of my future successes and / or growth . Thanks for Showing me decency and some L & R in a moment of clarity, true vulnerability and authenticity!
    All the Love,
    Ty a.k.a. HappyDude

    I’m watching the 2nd video in the course right now, and I feel like I must add to what Jonny characterizes as his strengths. He also has this tone that comes through from time to time, that I can only describe as otherworldly. It just has so much soul on specific phrases. And I don’t understand one of his weaknesses being falsetto. “Turn off the lights I’m watching back to the future” has some of the nicest falsetto I’ve heard in music. This is still surreal man. Thank you 🙏🏾
