The issue is, That pc isn't always bad, there's some cases where it's just being a decent human beings. So because there is a proper place for some pc culture , some people take it way too far. Like trying to limit comedy for example. Then we have the anti pc people going to the other extreme , making the normal anti pc people look just as freakish as the super pc people. I do want to say, Ghost Stories didn't actually flop. In fact, it was a *super* popular series at the time of it's dubbing, with a massive following in Japan. However, the issue it faced was that it's story was based around a bunch of Japanese myths and stories, and they were worried it wouldn't translate well over to American audiences. So, the team got together and decided to give it a new spin; granting the team total creative freedom with a very small list of rules: no names could be altered, the children would still follow the same general plot, and the ghost would always be defeated in the end, usually via chanting and a ritual. Beyond that - I might have forgotten a thing or two - the American dub team was giving absolute free reign. And they went on to make the most offensive, hilarious, over the top, first ever officially licensed Abridged series for the show, throwing it through the roof in popularity and earing awards for being the best dub two years in a row.

But thats what weirdly makes it not offensive in a weird way. Like if it was just the Jewish jokes or gay jokes that they go very hard on it be and issue but when the show is this devoted to bits and make fun of everyone you can tell it's not being serious. Its the best kind of humor, if you can't make fun of something then what's the point? We used to make fun of the Russians in the Cold War beneath the duck and cover fear, they made fun of us just the same, as long as its good humor there's absolutely no problem and people who are so sensitive need to grow up and make fun of others back, everyone will feel better and we'll all usually end up more friendly in the end because we know we can shoot the shit without hurting anyone's feelings. It worked decades ago, no reason to stop something that worked with no downsides. I was made fun of extensively in school, I didn't change myself, still stayed the same weird gamer nerd bowling ball, but I started giving as good as I got and made a few buddies out of old bullies that became good friends of mine until time pulled us apart. Did not see this one coming. This dub is the most interesting and wildest one I've ever seen. The fact they gave the VAs the okay to go all-out for this is hilarious.
The thing that I liked is, while they changed the dialogue and background story for what to be seems like a one shot joke. They actually keeping it entire season, like how Monoko is a devout Christian and a former lesbian, Leo is a Jewish, and so on. It feels like if you doesn't know this is a Japanese anime, you feel like this is originally created by the Dub team.
So fun story: Ghost stories was actually passed up by ALOT of dubbing studios and it got so bad that when they found THIS glorious team, they essentially said, "You can say literally whatever you want, just follow the story beats." And they replied with, "Say less."

I googled it because I remembered watching a proper EN dub years ago. Turns out this anime was pretty popular in Japan since it has multiple DVD releases and reruns which wouldn't happen if it flopped.

The irony is that the idea that it's 'pure fiction' is a myth. The Ghost Stories anime DID flop, it's why you never hear anything about it beyond this dub. It didn't flop SUPER hard, but still failed to gather enough attention that it never caught on culturally in Japan. Oh, no shot, we have the original airing ratings from March 2000-2001 through Animedia archives, and the show had better ratings back then than Pokemon and Doraemon at times. It was extremely popular in Japan and even in countries outside of the US.
The thing with the rumor about the show is "Flopped so hard" in japan actually isn't true. It's not the biggest among 90s anime, but it was still successful nonetheless. It's among the top 10 watched anime in japan at the time it aired, got official dub on many Asian countries, and the horror-book it was based on got a spike on their sales. ADV (The corporation one in charge of the American Dub) and it's director (Steven Foster) basically lied to everyone saying "The shows flopped in japan, so I asked the dub team to do whatever they want, and guess what? We made it successful here" because he just want to take credit, and at that time, nobody even bother to fact check. Years later, they received heavy backlash after it was found out by the Book author and Fuji TV (The one that hold the right for the anime) and they released a 'proper English dub' for the overseas viewer on Animax, but the damage already been done. Most western audience already thought that the show really bombed in JP and the Animax Dub is just there as an attempt to 'tone down' the series.

Abridged series exist. Unless you lament that dubbing companies can't just take a random property and instead of giving it a proper dub, bastardize it by making voiceover that, while comical, has almost nothing to do with the original text.
Ghost Stories is one of the best dubs ever. The shock humor is amazing, and I think the only other dub that took this "make things up as you go" approach to dubbing was Samurai Pizza Cats. It's just a shame that some of the people who did voices for this show later on became huge hypocrites, attacking other VAs for making similar jokes at cons and stuff (if you know, you know). It's even worse when you hear that apparently the VAs and writers would race each other to the recording building, and whoever got there first would get to decide what the ad-libbed lines would be, so clearly everyone was down for the edgy jokes till someone they didn't like said them. The american dubbing industry is so f-ed.

Ghost Stories is something that should be watched every year to test your sense of humor. If it no longer makes you laugh, it's time to stop. I still chuckle over half the time, which is why I still watch it.

The story that was spread was that the show got a mid reception in Japan so the dub got basically a free range as long as they kept the basic plot and character names. Althoug its theorized that it was actually just one guy that made the changes and everyone just went along with it like in the end they didn't even bother to bleep f bombs. Actually surprised they don't go for any hard slurs.

Basically Steven Foster, the director of the dub, has a history of doing whatever the fuck he wants with dubs, and he either lied about the reason he did the same with Ghost Stories, or there was a miscommunication so he just did what he usually does, and the internet did what the internet usually does and spread that lie/miscommunication around everywhere so that everyone believed it. Iirc this series didn’t actually flop in Japan and even did really well. It was something more along the lines of the English localisation team being allowed to rewrite most of the show to skirt around cultural differences. Which they abused the hell out of. I don’t know exactly though

I googled it because I remembered watching a proper EN dub years ago. Turns out this anime was pretty popular in Japan since it has multiple DVD releases and reruns which wouldn't happen if it flopped.

Fun fact: this whole "Ghost Stories flopped" thing? Didn't happen, pure fiction. It was moderately successful at the time. The myth originates from a dub directer who was already infamous for making shit up in his projects.

The irony is that the idea that it's 'pure fiction' is a myth. The Ghost Stories anime DID flop, it's why you never hear anything about it beyond this dub. It didn't flop SUPER hard, but still failed to gather enough attention that it never caught on culturally in Japan. The idea that the director made up the idea that it flopped was invented by people who just didn't like the guy.

Its possible that the story behind ghost stories may not be true, the show did pretty well in Japan and its believed that one of the dub writers who was known for making absurd changes, steven foster, made up the rumor that it flopped as an excuse to do whatever he wanted, but with how much time has passed we’ll probably never know

Oh, no shot, we have the original airing ratings from March 2000-2001 through Animedia archives, and the show had better ratings back then than Pokemon and Doraemon at times. It was extremely popular in Japan and even in countries outside of the US.

The thing with the rumor about the show is "Flopped so hard" in japan actually isn't true. It's not the biggest among 90s anime, but it was still successful nonetheless. It's among the top 10 watched anime in japan at the time it aired, got official dub on many Asian countries, and the horror-book it was based on got a spike on their sales.
ADV (The corporation one in charge of the American Dub) and it's director (Steven Foster) basically lied to everyone saying "The shows flopped in japan, so I asked the dub team to do whatever they want, and guess what? We made it successful here" because he just want to take credit, and at that time, nobody even bother to fact check. Years later, they received heavy backlash after it was found out by the Book author and Fuji TV (The one that hold the right for the anime) and they released a 'proper English dub' for the overseas viewer on Animax, but the damage already been done. Most western audience already thought that the show really bombed in JP and the Animax Dub is just there as an attempt to 'tone down' the series.
ADV also did the "Lake Texarkana Dub" for "Gamera Vs. Legion."

Ghost Stories is one of the best dubs ever. The shock humor is amazing, and I think the only other dub that took this "make things up as you go" approach to dubbing was Samurai Pizza Cats.
It's just a shame that some of the people who did voices for this show later on became huge hypocrites, attacking other VAs for making similar jokes at cons and stuff (if you know, you know). It's even worse when you hear that apparently the VAs and writers would race each other to the recording building, and whoever got there first would get to decide what the ad-libbed lines would be, so clearly everyone was down for the edgy jokes till someone they didn't like said them. The american dubbing industry is so f-ed.

The story that was spread was that the show got a mid reception in Japan so the dub got basically a free range as long as they kept the basic plot and character names. Althoug its theorized that it was actually just one guy that made the changes and everyone just went along with it like in the end they didn't even bother to bleep f bombs. Actually surprised they don't go for any hard slurs.

Basically Steven Foster, the director of the dub, has a history of doing whatever the fuck he wants with dubs, and he either lied about the reason he did the same with Ghost Stories, or there was a miscommunication so he just did what he usually does, and the internet did what the internet usually does and spread that lie/miscommunication around everywhere so that everyone believed it.

Iirc this series didn’t actually flop in Japan and even did really well. It was something more along the lines of the English localisation team being allowed to rewrite most of the show to skirt around cultural differences. Which they abused the hell out of. I don’t know exactly though
