- This was Maria Callas' farewell concert in London in 1973. It was held at the Royal Festival Hall. She sang with Giuseppe di Stefano. They were accompanied by Ivor Newton. The programme is:
1. Verdi, Don Carlos, Act II duet
3. Poncinelli, La Gioconda, Suicidio (Callas solo)
4. Bizet, Carmen (duet)
5. Mascagni, Cavalliera Rusticana, Voi lo sapete (Callas solo)
6. Mascagni, Cavalliera Rusticana, Tu qui Stanuzza (duet)
7. Puccini, O Babbino caro (encore, Callas solo)
To think Ivor Newton was 81 here, amazing. A moving documentary and still fascinating to watch them both. Thank you for these uploads.
Awesome!!!!!!!
My god, Di Stefano and his uncovered head voice. Anyway, artisticly is great, but both voices are really ending their carreers. Viva La Callas and Pippo, the only thing remaining to say.
Wonderful! She never stopped being fantastic!!!
@RoyKa2010 Well those are two things necessaries for ruining a voice =D. Curiously I don't think that there was a great chemistry between Pavarotti and Sutherland or Corelli and Nilsson, nor Netrebko and Villazon (you understand? couples that have been said to be unique on stage), even though those last two shouldn't be mentioned. I think that the great couple of tenor and soprano is Di Stefano-Callas and other one Callas-Gobbi, not matched by Hvorostovsky-who cares.
@RoOodOoOloOmeg Well, tastes differ, but I find this uncovered sound quite pleasant. I think what actually ruined his voice was his trying to sound like a dramatic tenor, giving it a 120% every time, even when it really didn't sound nice, or wasn't even necessary ;)
But yes, what an couple (they would have been)! Their temperaments match each other so well, don't they?
