God, this had me suffering!! I could feel every word she was singing, I felt like I was in Santuzza's place ...thats what I call singing with the soul! That is real acting! Brava Callas!! Di Stefano was also a great singing actor.

Heartbreaking in places; wonderful in others. I certainly wouldn’t be without this precious film. Some of Callas’s lower notes are still astonishing. Her sense of drama is undiminished; so is her uncanny ability to BECOME the character she’s playing. No other singer has managed this so completely - not since the days of Claudia Muzio, anyway. Interesting to see Sutherland prompting di Stefano so assiduously!

Grandi interpreti. Ineguagliabili.

I won't go so far as to label her "poor woman". She deserves better than that. Did she know it was a failure? Most likely. But the artist in her simply could not quit. If you do something you truly love, and for whatever reason you can't do it anymore, it doesn't stop your soul from wanting to do it. She wanted to perform. Her breath support simply couldn't hold up anymore. Her voice never failed, but she overworked her diaphragm, point blank. But poor woman? Never. She was a consummate artist til the end.

at 9:03 a small miracle takes place: it seems that from the maximum concentration of its physical expression, suspended on the attack of the piano's phrase, a sound of detained, modest, but definitive despair springs from she knows that now there is not it's nothing more to do; as if the music said more than the words of the text, and the sound of his voice followed that meaning

After she finished Voi lo sapete....she bowed her head, but there was no smile. She knew. She knew what they all knew, that her confidence enough to revive her voice, would never return. She said it herself to a friend, after listening to her own record: "Brava. La Callas will never sing like that again."

She knew is was all a charade. This was the greatest artist of the 20th century and she didn't believe in what she was doing. She knew she was a lifetime away from the voice and musicianship she had unleashed on the world. She also knew that had she walked on with toilet paper stuck to her shoe, they'd have cheered….. Poor woman.
