- Midsize Sedan Safety Reaches New Heights with the 2018 Toyota Camry
We car buyers have many different reasons for making purchase decisions. It may be the car’s powertrain that sways us, or the design of the sheetmetal. Of all the millions of variables, there’s a personal, practical formula we attempt to define as we research and test drive; a balance between wants and needs wrapped up in the significance of a $30,000 purchase.
Yet there are a few features on everyone’s list - and one such must-have is safety. Good ratings are a universal must-have, and when organizations such as the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) come out with improved scores on a redesigned vehicle, automakers hope that it will improve sales and bolster the brand’s reputation with consumers.
So it is with Toyota and the 2018 Camry. As a part of its recent 2018 model changes, improvements have earned the top-selling sedan an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. The award comes due to changes made to the front crash prevention system (which is also now standard), and to all available headlights. This, in addition to already strong scores in other categories, put the Camry over the top.
To earn the Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must have good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. A vehicle must also score an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention, and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
As such, the Camry’s standard front crash prevention system is now rated superior, thanks to the addition of an automatic braking system that brought the car to a complete stop during testing. In addition, the Camry avoided a collision during tests at 12 mph and 25 mph.
The Camry’s standard LED headlights earned an acceptable headlight rating, as did headlights available on the XLE and XSE models. The adaptive headlights on the Camry Hybrid earned a good score. The institute’s headlight evaluation scores on a poor, marginal, acceptable, and good scale. According to the IIHS, engineers measure the reach of a vehicle's headlights as the vehicle travels straight and on curves during straightaways, gradual left/right curves, and sharp left/right curves.

My local Toyota has a 2019 Camry on display that was rear ended by a semi. It's amazing how intact the cabin is. Yeah the rear is now a hatch back and completely flattened, but I'm absolutely blown away at how unharmed the entire cabin is. Good job Toyota

Every year they get better and better with safety.
My 2004 Camry LE has no side curtain airbags. The sad thing is that back then side curtain airbags were an option. They weren't standard until the 2007 model year.

My 2004 Camry does have side curtain airbags. Also, a sunroof. And tinted windows. It's the XLE model.
@Shawn Kemp My Camry has been holding up good (I take care of it). I've had it since brand new, and as of now, it has ~185K miles. I never heard of transmission problems, or experienced it. I have heard of engine oil issues (oil burning or leaking), and I had an oil leak a couple years ago. But other than that, I've never had any major issues. Only smaller things like an exhaust leak, or the alternator going out, or that the front struts had to be replaced once (the driver-side spring broke). It still has its original headlights and fog lights.
However, I would probably recommend the sixth generation Camry. I know the 2007 Camry has the same 4 cylinder engine as mine (although with minor updates). And the transmission has another gear. Although, an issue with the sixth gen Camry (at least the earlier ones) is that their headlights fog/haze from the sun quite fast. My Camry's headlights are still quite clear.

Camrys are like tanks, I've seen some that been in bad crashes and still be driving
In 2002 size airbags as they were optional. Now it is standard equipment. I drove an 03 Camry and the only injury I had when I had an accident was my left knee. Back then side air bags weren't standard equipment as they are now. However, Toyota designed it's car well and with every redesign it gets improved.
Really love my 2015 camry xle. Couldn't have asked for a better first car. Whenever I drive it I'm happy.

IIHS changed from half offset to quaternary offset. The safety didn't change, the test did. Your tire used to be able to go over the curb just fine, now they added spikes to the curb. So did you tire suddenly change? Common sense peopel.

My dad have Camry V30 2002! I think- this is the best generation of Toyota Camry. Very cool, big, simple in use and comfortable sedan!!! 😊👍👍👍👍
I like more the V40. My V40 is the first Generation from 2007. But the V30 is also very nice!!! Here in Germany on can not buy a Camry because of that my Camry is from Canada...

If you average out all the scores from over the years, the Toyota Camry is a really safe car.
Their actual safety record doesn't reflect that, unfortunately real world accidents don't occur in a perfect manner such as these tests, it's a good idea to look up real world crash info and see the real world damage that occurs, there are also some good channels on TH-cam that show accident videos and the aftermath such as Loud Labs etc.
@@4nciite a crash in a volvo is just as deadly too. these tests might say the safety is good but the force of stopping still wont keep you from dying. short message: just put away the phone because even your $90,000 safe car is still deadly.
@@Kayshots There's a big difference between brands and models, thinking that all car brands and models perform the same is very naive. Some car brands like Toyota for example cut a lot of corners and make cars as cheaply as possible and it shows in the real world when compared to other brands.

Funny how the 5th gen 2002-06 Camry held up the best in frontal crash. I feel safe when driving it knowing they hold up very very well

Yeah, and the 2012 model not so good. How any automaker can do that is beyond me. They don't make 'em like they used to.
The 2012 test changed to the newer and much harder small overlap crash test, that's why it looked worse. The car didn't get weaker

Not even that. Watch the 2002 Camry crash. Notice the passenger cell remains intact. If Euro NCAP conducted that crash test on that car, they would for sure award it a 5 star safety rating. Now watch the 2012 Camry crash. Notice the passenger cell deforms. The 2018 Camry performs as well as the 2002 Camry though. The occupants of the 2002 and 2018 models would most likely be able to walk away from the crash virtually unscathed, while the driver (it's American, so it's LHD) of the 2012 model would almost certainly have a broken leg at least. Plus he missed the airbag and faceplanted the dashboard, so that is a guaranteed head injury, and those can lead to long-term disability or even death.
MrSupercar55 You can't compare those tests. The 2002 was subjected to a moderate overlap, where 40 percent of the car strikes the barrier. Only 25 percent of the 2012 vehicle strikes the barrier, putting much greater stress on the structure. The 2012 did better than the 2002 in the moderate overlap test. Look it up, the tests were done by the IIHS.

2015-2017 is on the same wheel base as the 2012-2014. I’m assuming that is why they skipped
Why did they test those models? Those models are very important for safety reasons. So if I get in a accident tomorrow or in the near future. I’m putting Toyota fault in this and will sue the company

Milad Anki when they don't test the models it's because there were no major changes based on what the manufacturer said so testing them would be testing the exact same car with different internal features despite the car and safety features being the same. Not only that but they're still required to do crash testing for the US government and the international NCAP so you can check ratings on those too.

Стрекоза, было две таких, на одной попал в аварию, тотал, морда вся ушла, сам жив здоров, нога правая только поныла пару дней и всё (в момент аварии была зажата педаль тормоза).

We have a 2004 Camry a 2011 camry and a 2015 camry. The 2011 Camry cost way too much to fix. I was rear ended and the car pushed my muffler forward and got the steering out of alignment and made all the sensors go off but no airbag deployment and it cost over 3k to fix

Если не ошибаюсь, в ролике авто 2002-2007 года били фронтально о частично деформируемый барьер с перекрытием 50%, а авто 2012 и далее били о недеформируемый барьер с 30% перекрытием (новый стандарт). Отсюда и такая разница в разрушениях. Но прогресс между 2012 и 2017 очень заметен! Особенно в боковой жёсткости кузова.

Well. Saftey technology improves and regulations change all the time. Back then, it was only required to have at least driver side airbags.
Consider this - the camry first came out in 1983 and had ZERO airbags. i had a small overlap crash in my 88 camry (still zero airbags) and the only injury was my hand - AFTER the crash, when i realized what i'd done (clipped a light pole, ripped off the right front wheel), i hit the steering wheel over and over out of frustration. Toyota finally added a driver airbag in 1992 and passenger airbag in 95. technology and testing methods evolve over time, and every crash is different.
I understand safety changes over time, but in my opinion in the early 2000's and especially 2012 the safety was lacking.

For all you guys saying one did better than the other . Sigh.....they changed the frontal offset significantly over the years the 2012 and up are on about a 12” offset. The 2002 is like 24” that makes a huge difference

That’s because it’s a moderate overlap crash test, newer tests are tougher with small overlap crash tests.
AUChannel I can imagine the 2002 would still be safer even in a small overlap and I'm willing to bet on that but too bad I can't say the same about the 2012 model.
you are missing the point... the toughness of the chassis is not the key point in safety. a chassis has to be able to absorb the impact. this is call the crumple zone and i believe in the 2002 version, they were much tougher which is great to withstand impact, but then the occupants would then take the full force of the impact instead which would probably crush their rib cage or worst case, damage their spine. newer cars tend to have different strength metal in each sections which varies the strength of the front chassis. this way, the impact initially is all absorbed by the crumple zone then slowly move through the car so that the deceleration from the impact would not affect the occupants as much. though the seat belt anchoring points and how they work also plays a massive part in decelerating the occupants in a much more safe manner instead of just yanking them back.
loud Ring Actually it won’t, it will collapse badly, the reason it can stand the moderate overlap simply because the engine absorbs a lot of the crash power, while in the case of small overlap crash most of the power goes directly to the passenger compartment.

Toyota Camry is THE taxi car in my city, too. Snow storm and -30 Celsius on a regular basis. Oh, I have NEVER seen one stuck in snow.

Yes, handling. I actually rented an 2018 BMW 330i for a business trip, drove it for 1000 km within the few days, and then test drove a 2018 Toyota Camry XSE V6 right after I got out of it. I mean right after, within 20 minutes.
And I felt the Camry was actually faster once it finished wheel spin (301hp fwd), gave better feedback from the road, and more comfortable.
And it's still cheaper than the BMW with 53 LESS horsepower!
What can I say...
Oh right. I really really really really really hate Japanese cars, especially Toyota, until I actually got in one and drove like I stole it. btw, I got a 2nd place in a go kart best of the week rank right before the rank refreshed, so I'm not just a commuter when it comes to cars.

The 2002 tested was in the moderate overlap frontal crash test. This uses 40% of the front end and isn't nearly as stringent on the structure as the small overlap on only 25% of the front end. The 2012, 2014, and 2018 were tested in the small overlap (the 2018 was tested on the passenger side, the 2012 and 2014 on the driver side). The 2002 is not safer than the 2012, the crash test became tougher.
The 2012, 2014, and 2018 all passed the MODERATE overlap with flying colors, they did even better than the 2002. Similarly, the 2002 would do even worse in the SMALL overlap than the 2012 did. The Camry's been improving on frontal crash safety with each generation.
The 2004 and 2007 were side impact tests. Any Camry without side and side curtain airbags is going to perform just as bad as that 2004 did. The 2002's frontal test still applies to the 2004, as the generation ran from 2002-2006. So an '02-06 Camry did Good in the moderate overlap test and Poor in the side impact (unless you got the optional side airbag package, that bumped it up to Good in the side impact too)
