It's kind of sad GameFreak doesn't have time to realize their ideas to their fullest potential. Such a beloved studio and franchise that is at the heart of many people's childhood, being essentially held back because of immovable release schedules.
Real. They should spend less money on suing everything and more on their games. Edit: I mean, of course, Nintendo should spend less money on suing everyone and more money on their games, in this context, Pokemon Games.
Yea generation 5 is my favorite gen. Plus a lot of people don't know that Gamefreak planned Black and White to be the Reboot of Pokémon, that's why there were so many risks taken with the themes, gameplay and Pokémon designs.
The aim of gen 5 was twofold- they wanted a soft reboot, yes, but they wanted to make a game that would make all the kids growing up with shitty iOS apps to understand what a REAL game was. And that's kinda what its downfall was, IMO. Gen 5 is an exceptional primer for the RPG genre and gaming in general, filled with a lot of archetypes, features and themes done well and accessably- not just as a pokemon game. And considering how many folks who grew up with it are coming out of the woodwork now to sing its praises, I'd say they did a great job at it. But the problem is, it didn't quite land for the high school/adult fans, who had hit all those storybeats and experiences already. What does a soft reboot have to offer a teen or adult fan who isn't yet nostalgic, especially when the industry was getting more adult and mature for the first time in Video Game history? (we were all pretty edgy and you didn't get as many games back then) I think we were all happy that Gamefreak had decided to finally make some Goddamned changes for once and experiment with the formula, and no one expected that they'd just get mad, pickup all their toys and regress into this roadmap of nostalgia bait, gimmicks and have the bigwigs wander off with a bunch of needed resources to go make Tembo the Badass Elephant and Little Town Hero. Its such a shame that Gamefreak has basically punished every pokemon fan since gen 5 because they made a game that very much did not click with the existing fanbase at the time. We didn't ask for a decade and a half of nostalgic pandering just because we didn't buy enough gen 5 copies. We've seen the leaks, we saw this video. We played gen 5 and gen 7. We know they have the capacity to deviate from gyms and the same tired formulas. They should have owned up to the fact that they made THE PERFECT game for the younger fans at the time, like they set out to do, and should have been happy with that achievement, in the face of the encroaching threat of Apps. This post is apparently so darn toxic that TH-cam is fussing at me? IDK why? Is it because I said they effed off to go make other games? Or does this site have strong feelings about gen 5 lol
Nah, I dont get why some fans want to dunk of 3d like it was a mistake. 3d was a necessary move for the franchise and wouldn't have done so well if they just stuck to a 2d sprites
@@keithflippers4429 Your missing the greater point. Yeah, obviously they were going to have to make a shift in art design at some point, and it's overwhelmingly likely that it would mean 3D graphics. But that didn't mean they had to mutilate the gameplay of the series.
I don't think they ever lost the creative ambition, they were just limited by hardware by going the full 3d route. now that we're on more powerful systems we're starting to see more ambitious projects (especially with the legends games)
@@Turtlebro The type of ambition they are going for seems totally alien to the kind of ambition that existed for the Pokemon series in the 1990s/2000s/and even the 2010s.

5:22 I imagine it was more an issue of breaking the illusion with the sprites. We've seen Trainerless dynamic camera movement since gen 1 in Stadium. Its really worth taking a moment to look at how darn clever they were on the N64 in creating the illusion of more going on than there actually was- like how rarely there were ever both pokemon AND an attack effect on screen at the same time. That's about the limit of what you can do with camera work. But yeah, I'd love to see them come back to it, regardless. With focused sprite art (with sprites made for parallax movents especially) and them caring about the camera in battles again, (they look pretty gnarly these days :( )boy howdy could it be visually stunning.
When you remember that Gen 5 was supposed to be a soft reboot for the franchise and these early builds really make you think, yeah GF could have definitely gone this route. And maybe even benefit from it compared to fully 3D with there time constraints. only hope for the Gen 5 remakes they do look at it again with how Square enix popularized it and that this style has potential with the series
Great vid, nice shout-out to DQ7! an open-world 2D pokémon game is a dream of mine, really bummed that we didn't get that, specially since I'm not the hugest fan of gen 5. Still, hope gamefreak (or someone else) would do that in the fure Edit: also love the references to other DQ games, HD-2D games and stuff. Pokémon-centric videos usually lack comparisons to other gaming franchises, which I think is bad because it makes pokémon be this insular thing in the head of the kids getting into it. By adressing said games, you might get some of your younger or less game savvy audience to explore a broader side of the gaming industry as a whole. Pokemon is wonderful, but there are many JRPGs out there that deserve a play!
great video! though i would like to bring up that dq4 remake wasn't the first to do 2d sprites on a 3d world, even by square! xenogears did it in 1997, almost 10 years before, and that might not have been the first either
You can use cheats to see this 3d like view in actual hgss game via emulators , honestly it could have worked easily with a few tweaks . Another thing I'm curious about is that can rom hack developer use these 3d assets from hgss and bw,bw2 to create a fangame with this open world style like already have most of the building models they just need to form a semi open world ,which I know is a difficult task but if did correctly it can easily become the best pokemon fan game .

that jumping Gold is so goofy I love it
A 2D POKEMON GAME WITHOUT TILE-BY-TILE MOVEMENT???
D.A.M. Champion released this month and it is a 2D open world game that is like a pokemon parody
This solidifies my opinion that 3D was a mistake for the series.
While I still want them to keep creating 3d games and evolve their style, I would love if they made a spinoff series for 2d games

@fshoaps There is no greater point its just baises and nostalgia
The first square enix 2d hd game was xenogears not dq7.
its a shame they lost so much ambition once they went 3d i love 3d but do feel like 2d would have made the game so much bigger and detailed

The Stadium games (and other console games) were developed by different companies, not Game Freak? I'm pretty sure?
