CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Andy (Anne Hathaway) interviews to be Miranda's (Meryl Streep) assistant and despite everything going against her, makes an impression.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel about a young woman who stumbles into the hectic worlds of high fashion and publishing comes to the big screen in this comedy. Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a bright young woman from the Midwest who has just graduated from college and wants to work as a magazine writer. Andy has applied for a job at "Runway," America's most prestigious fashion journal; though Andy has little to no interest in the garment trade, they are one of the only magazines in New York with a job opening -- second assistant to editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). As Andy quickly learns, Miranda is a diva with plenty of power within the magazine business and she isn't afraid to use it, and though Andy lands the job (primarily by being in the right place at the right time), she soon learns that working for Miranda could test the patience of a saint thanks to her endless demands and refusal to acknowledge the end of a work day. Andy struggles to hold on to the job and her sanity, knowing that a recommendation from Miranda can open nearly any door at any magazine, but can she handle the pressure without losing her mind along the way? The Devil Wears Prada also stars Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Adrian Grenier.

To be fair, she did not do well in this interview. She wasn't prepared, she knew nothing about the company, she wasn't dressed neatly and she didn't seem excited to work there. She wouldn't have gotten any job with a performance like that. But this movie is great nonetheless.
sims2lovealot exactly. Any hiring manager would be turned off.
But as they said 'she has an impressive resume'
And she bragged.
MrSharpie28.. I was told in an interview by the interviewer that this is the time where you should brag....that was after i said i dont want to brag.
Is it REALLY bad that she looks much better in the red shirt in the scene directly after this when she's with her friends in the bar? When she went in to meet with Miranda Priestly, she was CLEARLY nervous, she was stuttering, she looked ridiculous (like a high school dork in a frumpy shirt) and she had NO clue who this woman was, what she did, or why she was there. She didn't care. She could have at least done at hour's worth of research and TRIED to care about getting this job. She even ADMITS to her boyfriend that her sense of fashion sucks and then she spends the movie basically waffling between being a victim and acting like she's above them.
"Are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?" Stanley Tucci is the best in this movie (and in every movie he's in).
+MerBearStare Especially if you compare him in this to him in Undercover Blue.
he's playing himself here
Is this movie the reason they say he was gay in a past life in Easy A?
I hated him in Lovely Bones hahaha
Tucci Gang Tucci Gang Tucci Gang
"No, no, that wasn't a question." Favorite line.
I use it on daily baiss.
I too using it when someone is denying the fact I said. It worked. They couldn't even think what's the next word to utter.
Details of your incompetence do not interest me
By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.
"Details of your incomeptence do not interest me" - thats my beloved :D (from different scene)
Lmaooo
I love her "That's all".
+Petra Pavlinovic Me also! That's all
Petra Pavlinovic Who doesn't? That's all
Yup
Petra Pavlinovic Thanks. Bye
iconic. that’s all.
the way she tossed the newspaper to the side was just so majestic and iconic
yes omg, it floated in the air
Just finished watching it and I wondered if somebody else noticed that. It's all in the small gestures and the tiny details. Streep was wonderful in this
Well yea that's a valid point. But I've also seen mainly black men berating her for her body so...
Damn. Best comment ever
Wow, just watched that after reading this comment...and watched it probably at least a half dozen more times.
10 years later and never get tired of this movie.
+Robert Sm SAME. I WATCH IT LIKE 5 TIMES EVERY YEAR.
try 3 times a day. Yes, I did that for a year when the dvd first came out. 3 times a day for a year lol. I was quite bewitched by this film
That's all!
Robert S Yes. Hi. Good. Bye

damn meryl. always giving her best at every performance. Who else can get oscar nomination from a teen novel based movie..
MarthaDameria Tamasya ellen page?
MarthaDameria Tamasya yes
MarthaDameria Tamasya To be fair Meryl Streep can sit on a chair the whole movie, saying nothing and yet be nominated for her amazing portrayal.
All I have to say is damn
let's not forget her accents. She gets every little detail on point. If you watch all of her movies you'll notice she never walks or talks the same for every part. Her voice literally sounds like someone else's, and she never ever goes even a little out of character. She is honestly superb. and she could perfectly be a brat about it but everyone always says how nice is to work with her, how inspiring and hard-working she is and how she loves to help younger actors. The day she stops acting will be a very sad day.
It's so unforgettable how Meryl throws the newspaper
yES
Only Meryl Streep can do that I swear! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
+Jhon Paulo you have not style or sense of fashion
I swear she was nominated for an oscar just cos of that bit!
Give that woman an Oscar
"Basically it's either this or Auto Universe." The first time that I watched this movie, I sympathized with Andy. But the more I watch it, the more I get the point: throughout the movie, she is constantly playing the victim about how her boss and co-workers treat her. But she made it clear from the start that she thinks of herself as superior to everyone else around her and she has no interest in the fashion world, so how are they supposed to respect her?
That's another way to look at it, perhaps you're right.
That is absolutely true, but they toned it down for the movie. In the book, Andy is really a little bitch.
Yeah. thats job hunting 101......you always kiss up to your potential place of employment and you certainly never treat it as the least worst option.
When she says that line, I now think "You shouldn't have said that." It's like saying she has to choose between two shitty jobs and this one was the sounded the least shitty. I get she needs a job but she has to impress the boss to make it sound like she's done research on this company and knows about it.
Also she straight out said that she hasn't ever read or even heard of the magazine which she came to interview for. Stupid thing to say to the editor in cheif. It's only possible in a movie to actually get a job with that interview.
When you watch this as a teenager, you sympathize with Andy. When you come back to it as an adult, zero sympathy.
Genie Hossain lol true
I still sympathize as an adult.
As an adult, you sympathize with Miranda
yup I agree. She turned up to an interview for a PA job and didn't even know the name of the executive she would be assisting. Nor had she read the publication she was applying to work for. I don't sympathise with her friends or boyfriend either. She's found a career she's interested in and to get started she needs to put in some long hours and take every opportunity and promotion she can. If she was doing her articles or her residency then the hours would be worse. ANd if she got promoted over someone else then she would take it.
Haha!! Funny how growing up does that to you. I see mistakes on both sides. I empathize with her yes, but Andy needed to be more prepared.
She was hired because of luck. At that time, Miranda wanted a different type of girl as her assistant: not the slim, stylish one who would be proven inadequate later on. Other than that, Andy was horrible in the interview. It is unacceptable that she showed up without having done some research about the magazine first and having made an effort to learn some information about the editor in chief.
There was a deleted scene which shows her being interviewed with H.R in which andy thinks its an interview about working with Elias Clarke A.K.A Conde Naste not for a specific magazine etc, and then when she gets there is told to go to Runway A.K.A Vogue.
@@ronaldfasshauer4390 Is there any link I can watch that part? I cant find in YouTUbe.
@@ronaldfasshauer4390 i remember watching that scene but i couldn't find it anywhere. Thought I was crazy
No, Miranda like Andrea, Miranda sees how Andrea is talanted... but Miranda cannot and didn't want admit to herself about it.
In the real world, she wouldn't have been hired. Not being informed about the company is a no go.
Meryl moves like a dancer. Every movement is orchestrated and rehearsed, from her head, neck, hands, fingertips, arms, to the way she speaks, sits, etc.... She is insanely good , it is like watching a ballerina.
Watch it again without the sound and you will see.
good idea!
The way she turns the page of a newspaper is marvelous
Omg you.
The part of love in the scene the most is when Andy says, "I think I can do a good job as your assistant". The look that Miranda gives her? The disdain? The, "I'm about to rip your heart out!"? She's always been my favorite actress.
No god but Allah

i just realised andy is like every self-insert fanfic cliché ever.
"i'm special bc i don't care. i'm different and that's why i'll make it!" oh my god
Very true. She makes fun of her co workers for actually putting in effort and wanting to be there
Andi technically is special: but that doesn't exclude her from having to work hard. She's literally not like the other girls, but she has to learn everything the other girls already know, and is treated exactly the same as the other girls.
""i'm special bc i don't care. i'm different and that's why i'll make it!" Lol, and that's probably why this movie had been so popular in my millennial generation given all the self-entitled people who feel the world owes them something
What sets it apart from fanfics is that she got heavy reality checks later on. And she changed
I also got the same vibes. She starts the movie with a huge "i'm not like the other girls" energy. What makes her better is that she grows as a person and as a worker, she starts not understand why her fellow coleages are giving their best and only changes when Nigel gives her a reality check that helped her to grow and understand how that world works instead of keep playing the victim and thinking she deserves praise for not even doing the bare minimum that job requires.
I remember when i first watched this movie when i was 15 and thinking Miranda was a heartless soul and Andy was another victim of that woman, now i rewatched and i think Andy totally deserved all that criticism, she was disconnected from reality and thought she was superior because of that. Irl, she would never have been hired.
I can imagine when she asked Emily to call Andy back
Miranda: "urm Emily. call her. I want her"
Emily: "....what"
Miranda: "thats all"
hahahah yeah
"bore somebody else with your questions"
That doesn’t sound like her.
She’d just say.
Call that girl over and prep her on what she’s to do tomorrow morning 8:00 sharp.
That’s all
alus nova no, no. That wasn’t a question.
"urm"
"I'm not skinny" Eeehm... Excuse me?
Right?! I was looking for this comment.
Something I really hated about this movie, they mentioned her being "fat" so many times- when she is very obviously skinny
+helleuw Yeah, same. I mean, I do get that, compared to a size zero model, she does not look so skinny, but calling her fat is just...
+JoEmEc for sure, it's ridiculous.
She's a size six, which in the fashion world equates to a land whale. Anne Hathaway herself had to wear padding in all of her pre-makeover scenes to make herself bigger.
"basically it's this or auto universe" yup, you're killing it Andy, killing it 😹😹😹 that's totally what you should say to the person interviewing you.
If I were Miranda,I'd be like:"Good luck with Auto Universe.....that's all'
well, it beats the way she was treated by Miranda
The thing is millennials are like this. It’s incredible what they say in interviews. Mind boggling in fact: I can only think it reflects their parents bringing them up with self entitlement, no one ever wrong and everyone is a winner even if last and my god, if you have to correct spelling or grammar in a report going somewhere important- it’s like the end of the world.
@@xr6lad dude shut up - this is such a 2018 diatribe
I think andy is very terrible with job interview. She is keep saying urmm and she didnt even do research for this job.
Sean Clark It's more than that though. She makes it clear her long-term ambitions do not lie with the company, or even the fashion world. why would an employer hire you if you're acting like their company is the lesser of two evils and nothing but a stepping stone in your career? She makes it sound like she's clearly above them and is now deigning to work for them. With that kind of attitude it's a miracle she got hired in the first place.
Sean Clark yea, she didn’t expect hearing from this job, but if you’re asked to come in for an interview, you should at least do a little research regardless of what job that is. But this clip is indeed funny.
yeah this is basically everything you should not do in a job interview
Yeah I wondered how Andy got the job besides saying she's a hard worker, is smart and learns fast. I mean if I were a boss and I heard a interviewee say something like "I basically have two choices, your job or some other job that I have no interest in", I wouldn't even consider calling that person back. She did do a terrible interview.
+HKC Having said that, it's the fact that she's feisty and doesn't fit in that gets her hired. Miranda's used to sycophants and so having someone treat her like she isn't god makes her take notice.
Honestly just the way she closes that newspaper deserved an Oscar.
Meryl Streep’s comments be so emotionless, quiet, and straight to the point but they still have so much meaning. Her character shows you that you don’t need to get loud and angry to have an effect on people.
That's all
In her particular case, the movie implies that she is so powerful and the demand for working for her is so high that she doesn't need to bother screaming in order to exercise her authority.
Its funny, when you start out the film youre absolutely with Andy wondering why they give Miranda the time of day.
Then throughout the film you see that Miranda is at the top of her craft and earns Andy's respect to the degree that she rushes to warn her boss shes going to be sacked.
And even then, you see Miranda was five moves ahead.
Miranda was very rude during the interview and Nigel rudely interrupted @sakurachristineito6428
"Are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?" Just brilliant
Andy got the job because she turned around, squeaked on her shoes, and talked back very confidently--that she was really smart, a very hard worker and that she learned very quickly. Miranda's bitchiness in this scene was a test, to see if Andy had what it took to be her assistant. If Andy folded and left with her tail between her legs, then Miranda knew she wasn't cut out for the position. But Andy didn't fold--she got a little angry and she spoke up. That and Andy's impressive resume (which Miranda already knew about as soon as she read a bit of the resume) is what got Andy the job. Interest in fashion and the magazine was incidental, because those are not the skills one needs to make it in a very cutthroat world.
+Luboman411 She also wanted to take a chance and hire the fat girl with the impressive resume, especially after her little speech of her so-called work ethics.
It's funny how Miranda's actually quite pleasant to Andy in the interview in the book, or at least didn't give any indication of how difficult she is. (Haven't read it in a while!)
Are you a writer? I had the most pleasent time reading your comment. Like I was reading a passing from a book with a snarky author with a false identity. I loved it.
+Faye Skelly -- Awww...thank you! That's actually one of the best compliments I've ever gotten from a complete stranger. Alas, I am not a writer. I do want to be one, though! But a writer's life can be very tough, which has prevented me from starting to write a book. Maybe your compliment will motivate me...
Luboman411. she got thé job bcuz she answered mirandas question lol
That "who are you" is so ICONIC !!
The "What are you doing here?" was also done so well. Miranda already knew Andie was out of her element before she even interviewed her.
This is probably the first movie i've ever watched more than 10 times. Still not tired of watching it. I remember almost every line of the movie and also this movies made me become very interested in fashion.
Slave of fashion!
Hey, be nice!
Seriously the only one you’ve watched 10 times?
Dude I’ve watched the princess bride more times then i can remember
There’s a lot of great movies you’d want to repeat
Agreed with everything you said
I skip past Andy & her bf scenes though, because they bog down the film
0:41 "And before today you had never heard of... me?" Her delivery of that line is divine; no blustering, no overdone contempt, not even bothering to be offended by it, just the sort of absolute confidence that most dictators with god complexes WISH they had.
Also, since Miranda wasn't present when Andy asked Emily who she was, that means Miranda knew Andy had never heard of her just from reading her at the interview. Presumably, she guessed from the fact that Andy was showing typical interview nerves rather than the awe and fear that Miranda's used to.
@mzytryck. Well said-- well put. You must be a writer.?! If not, hope you embark on writing.
How it should have ended:
Andy: "It's either this or Auto Universe."
Miranda: "Cool, have fun at Auto Universe."
THE END
I know this is just a movie, but in real life the second you tell your potential employer that they're one of your last choices and especially aren't exactly enthused about working for you, you generally lose the job. XD
lol
Andy was me-or put accurately-I was Andy. I got a job offering from Human Resources and idiotically accepted the offer. When I stepped into the place of work on my first day, I was given an interview and knew nothing about the place at all.
I felt her.
Lol I think we've ALL been there! I never did learn my lesson: you're supposed to read what you can about the company BEFORE you do the interview lol.
+Tanya Marie Word! Andy's biggest problem was that she didn't know who Miranda, The Company or The Fashion Industry is. She didn't dress the part. "Dress For The Job You Want, Not For The Job You Have!" She rambled on and on which must have gotten on Miranda's Nerves.
I had no choice, I had signed a contract to take what I was given. I just got the call saying you have an interview with X bank which I'm still working at and they had no job spec or breakdown as to what I was doing, such an awkward interview
yeah, managers are big on vision and strategy using vague terms and values so know that shit inside and out and and before you even apply tailor your CV to fit the corporate ethos
"No,no, that wasn't a question." Such a simple, brilliant line.

Which is why, many succesfull peoples are college drop outs.
Lol so right!!!
I think confidence is great but research is important
Of course, former students have so much to learn.
None of us know much of anything, let's not kid ourselves just because we're older now and supposedly soo independent and experienced.
I feel like Meryl Streep makes Anna Wintour seem nicer than she actually was
But in the book Miranda's character was far worse......but more realistic than the toned down almost lovable character in the film as portrayed by meryl
Anna wintour is actually a lovely person tho lol, she's just a confident woman so the media demonizes her like they do with every independent woman

"who is that sad little person?"😂
This scene is just over 10 years old and yet I always remember this scene as one of Meryl Streep's greatest roles.
Watch the Deer Hunter & other older movies Streep was in, not starred in.. She was not the headliner but stood out..
Emily Blunt is like that too.
It's intelligence..
I think she got the job cause Miranda is used to everyone being afraid of her and not questioning her, but since Andy stood up to her at the very end, Miranda was like, "Huh... interesting...".
Right! That look she gives her at 1:28 says it all. She's pretty much saying with her eyes "I wasn't expecting that but now I'm intrigued. You might just be worth a shot." I think she almost impressed that Andie had the guts to say anything back at all considering how quick Miranda was to shut her down. She fought back and stood up for herself. Thats why Miranda hired her. She figured if she could handle her dismissive attitude then she should be capable of working for her.
Each movement of Merryl is so perfect for the role
1:38 she didn't throw the newspaper she SWAY it, and she look so good I'm obsessed with all of Miranda's outfit in this movie and Meryl's performance in this movie are just exquisite, the whispering low voice, the attitude, the gestures, she owns the characther every seconds of it, and her eyes are captivating in every scenes
Miranda's face at 1:28 when Andy started stating her own flaws regarding her worth for the fashion industry indeed indicated that Miranda was impressed.
I love it. Its the moment Andi shows the same fiery passion that Miranda has deep down.
Miranda knows that Andi can learn the trade but she cant teach the attitude.
I found Andy's attitude about job hunting and interview to be so dry and disinterested. She clearly had no passion for fashion at all and didn't do her research about the employer. First rule of job hunting is know what you're walking into. If you don't convey you want the job, your employer will perceive you don't want it.
She didn't want to work in fashion, she wanted to be a journalist.
Andi really should be grateful she even got the job. Not many people can say they blew the interview and still got it
I'm i the only one think that Meryl Streep is kinda hot
She looks incredible.
yes
Beautiful and sexy
In this movie, no, you're not the only one.
AGREE. The way she removed her glasses and touched her lips, I'm dying.
*Andy does exactly what you SHOULDN’T do in a interview*

Notice that @1:33, Miranda purses her lips, showing that she knew Andy and the whole experience would be her biggest disappointment, albeit not the way we expected. Remember it was explained in the movie that Miranda pursing her lips means she disapproves signifying potential disaster. That's all.
The more I watch this film - and I love it, I watch it often - the more I realize that it is mostly about letting go of youthful idealism and expectation about what work is and also how clinging to those ideals make you a shitty worker. And that by shedding them, you can actually excel at what you do - ohh and that pretty much everyone in Andy's life sucks. Can't forget her shitty, entitled friends and boyfriend.
Sure, Miranda is harsh and rude in this interview - and in the whole movie - and I don't think that the film rose-colors that much if at all. After all, Andy does eventually quit and appears better off for it. But when you think about what is actually happening in this interview, Miranda and the whole Runway ethos becomes much more sympathetic and understandable. It fits in beautifully with the honesty of the film.
We are talking about a workplace which is internationally renowned, both in its own industry and in general. And so, Andy's attitude surrounding the work and the job as something that she can do well because "she is smart" and "works hard", even though she doesn't respect what a big deal the company AND its Editor-In-Chief, whom she knows nothing about, unsurprisingly doesn't engender any respect from Miranda. What a shock. This is the genesis of the shitty attitude - that she is actually better than everyone that she works with because she's smart and fashion is superfluous - that Nigel calls her on some thirty minutes later.
I also think it's very telling how confused Andy is that Miranda doesn't appear interested in her "accomplishments". Sure, she's clearly bright, went to a good school, and has confidence, but there is nothing specifically about her or her experience that suggests that she will be successful in the role she is interviewing for. She comes to it unpolished, she ADMITS that she isn't competitive in the NYC job market IN HER CHOSEN FIELD within a few moments of the interview, that she knows little about fashion and appears not to care about the professional gravity of the place she is interviewing at, and then she is upset when her award for journalism, something that has no bearing on whether or not she can actually do what Miranda needs her to do, doesn't impress her. Like, why should it? After all, it didn't impress enough "serious" journalists in New York to consider her applications, either.
Miranda is just being transparent about, you know, what every other organization she applied to was thinking about her candidacy. It's honest about what it's like to work - and it resonates with me so much more as a person who has been working for a while than it did watching it as a college student when it first came out. Looking at it with adult eyes, I don't think this film is really about "surviving an awful boss who sucks" as much as it is about how working with a demanding supervisor who holds themselves, their organization, and the people who work for them to an incredibly high standard can be a transformative and ultimately positive experience for us.
Very well said and thought out comment! Loved it
Thank you. I always thought the book was about surviving the boss rom hell, but I ended up relating more to Miranda and Runway in the movie. Not everybody gets their dream job at the first go. Some people never get their dream job. It doesn't mean you can't take some pride in your work and strive to do well. I also thought her friends and boyfriend were unsupportive about her wanting to do well.
I'd like to contest the idea that her friends and boyfriend are entitled. They are trying to help her. We can contest whether their brand of "help" is actually helping. But that is, without a doubt, their goal. When they try to pull her away from her job, they fully and wholeheartedly believe that the job is harmful to Andy's mental health, and they are doing it for Andy. Andy then ends up pushing them away, and they *still* try to help her for almost a year before giving up.
That is not what I call entitled.
As for whether the job actually is bad for Andy's mental health? I think it is. A job that is good for your mental health will involve praise when you do something well; not just scolding when you do it wrong. The most praise I can remember Andy getting from Miranda before Paris is when she finds the Harry Potter manuscript. And there is no verbal praise there, simply a smile. For completing an impossible task. By this point she is months into her job, and it's the first positive anything that she's gotten from her boss. No, Miranda's not evil. She's a complicated character. But complicated means she's not a saint, either. She does not treat her employees well at all, and that's what Andy's friends see, and that's what they try to take her away from. They'd be perfectly happy for Andy to work that job if Miranda were nicer to her.
@@reikun86 I don't think they were unsupportive about her wanting to do well. I think they thought she was stuck in an emotionally abusive boss-employee relationship. They wanted her to do well, but they also thought that mental health should be an even higher priority than work.
Meryl's hand gestures and purses of her lips are AMAAAHHHZINGG
I think she is the only actor who got nominated (so I believe) from one scene: this scene. if I am correct, it is justified I think. This interview scene is loaded with mesmerizing moves and lines from Meryl: the tossing of the newspaper, the slamming of the drawer, the touching of her earlobe while delivering the iconic line: no no that's not a question," etc. I mean she is the supreme master of acting.
Meryl Streep ? The best actress ever... I love that scene !
Miranda: ....and before today, you've never heard of ..................me? Meryl's timing and delivery of her lines is so perfect. I'm wondering if that initial brief clearing of her throat was real or an affectation of Meryl bringing Miranda to the surface to start the interview.....just a thought.
bach baroque Streep is a *GENIUS* actress. This may be my favorite role she's ever done. 🙌🏽🙏🏽
@@amandafalcone8964 same here actually, next to Silkwood
@bach baroque. I think the throat clearing is part of Meryl's mesmerizing acting skills. She is the only actor I know who can turn her props into characters: the tossing of the newspaper, the intimidating slamming of the drawer, the tone of 'no that's not a question' while touching her earlobes. It's insane what mastery of craftmanship can take perfection to unchartered heights.
"Basically, it's this or Auto Universe."
Change it to:

Andy goes unprepared in this interview. I know this is just a movie, but c’mon! You don’t go in an interview not researching about your potential employer, having your hair as if you just rolled out of bed, putting on clothes that looks like they’re just laying around the room. 😂
Sometimes you do... I went for an interview in an investment banking firm not knowing the name of the Manging Director (who was a well known person in the industry). Still got hired thanks to my resume and doing well for 3 years now. When I look back at that interview, I'm surprised how idiotic I faced that
Have you interviewed many gen-z job applicants?
I can't stop watching these scenes. Maryl Streep is such an iconic in her acting skills.
Miranda: You have no style or no sense of fashion
Andy: well ummm
Miranda: No, No that wasn’t a question
😅😂🤣😂😅😂🤣
This scène is good too in the french version
1:37 is where she won that job. It wasn’t so much what she said, it’s that she had the egregious audacity to say that to Miranda. Notice how she stays fixated on her for two seconds.
Miranda saw her potential when she took off her glasses
The way she closed that newspaper. Damn classy.
J Monikah. Streep is the only actor I know who turns her props into characters. Also notice the slamming of the drawer, the touching of her earlobes while delivering the iconic line: no no that's not a question."
The fact that she turned around and stood up for herself is what got her
The job....
Yes, she is smart, she learns fast and she works really hard.
What an honest job interview
I cannot believe this movie is filmed ten years ago, like it was yesterday. The movie is like a American fashion fairy tale with many stereotypes about the world of high fashion, some of them are true, people can be cruel no matter which sector or company you work, some of them are not, created by the media...
Love her mannerism when she said "that's all"
That camera push-in at 1:27 is just gorgeous, gives me chills all over
You can tell by Miranda's expressions, especially from 1:27 onward, that she already likes Andy!
That's what I thought too
The funny thing is, Andy though she was better than everyone else when she made many mistakes.
1) Actually RESEARCH the company you wish to work for. You need to have some knowledge about the company in order to improvise in the interview (when you're lost) and -to kiss their ass.-
2) Andy did not have the proper attire. In what world is slacks, a sweater vest, and random brown jacket okay? She would NOT get the interview for her journalist job, and I'm surprised she got it here. The standard interview outfit is a white button up shirt, black/grey/navy blazer, and matching formal pants/at least knee length (sitting down) skirt. If you're owe so smart Andy, why didn't you wear that outfit?
Because there wouldn't have been a movie if she'd followed those rules. This isn't a documentary!
I'm willing to bet that outfit was probably the only formal thing she owned. Judging from her other clothes she had worn before she got the makeover, Andy's clothes were very simple and plain.
I know. Who goes to a job interview and says they don't fit in with the office and will therefore be a bad team member and don't like the product that the company produces? Or dresses like it's smart casual Sunday in a corporate company.
Attire differs by company and culture. For a formal publisher, she should have dressed up more (for the sake of the movie, obviously, she didn't fit in because she wasn't "glam"). But many companies are more relaxed now -- her outfit would be fine in some places.
princess sydney , dude chill.
Miranda is such a queen, oh my god.
Yeah!!!
When desperate and knowing you're losing the interviewer, asserting yourself, being honest almost always nails you the interview. worked for me.
Meryl Streep’s subtly subtle nuances always amazes me! Virtuoso at her craft
This movie and The Help” were 2 movies that I would’ve never expected to like that I’ll actually go out of my way to watch and still enjoy to this day
Acting in this movie is in another level specially Merlyn. Natural and scary. She literally lives her role.
Only an editor-in-chief of Runway magazine with that flawless hairstyle can close a newspaper like that.
Imagine how different this movie would've been if she had gone with Auto Universe...
The Devil Wears Brake Pads.
🤣
I see a lot of people talking about how unprofessional and cocky Andy was, and I completely agree. However, I can't help but look back on how Miranda commented that Andy had taken Emily's spot after she commented on how cruel Miranda was being, pointing out her hypocrisy. I feel that she definitely learned her lesson by the end of the film, and I'm glad she did.
"And you have no style or sense of fashion..." - "Well, I think that depends on-" "No, no, that wasn't a question." Killer exchange!
It's funny how people judge Miranda and people like her as : interested more in the looks and physic of others , she hired Andy which means she's beauty with brains ❤️
“Are we doing a before and after piece I don’t know about?” LOOOLL
1:27 the moment she decided to hire Andrea
"I have no interest in what this company does, didn't bother to do quick background research for the job to prep for this interview, and fully admit you were my second to last option. Let me work here please." ...Wow, Andy you know exactly what an interviewer wants to hear...
This just proves that anything Meryl does becomes iconic. What a performance!
“Miranda” will always be my favorite Meryl Streep character. Everything about her look in this movie was fire! 👀🔥 The haircut, makeup, & clothes are literal perfection. And she’s right-“everybody wants to be us”. She made me want to level up & dress classier.
I have to say, Andy was really inappropriate in this interview. You don’t say in an interview, “ oh, I’m here because it’s the only thing I could find” even if it’s damn true. You at least do a little research and show how you are a good match for the job. It’s true that Miranda is mean but Andy acted At first as if everything was beneath her.
"No, no!!! That wasn't a question..." Only Meryl Streep can deliver a line like that with conviction. 👏👏👏
There was no ! At all. Calm voice at all professional moments
When I interviewed at several Financial Firms right out of college, I carefully studied each place before showing up for interviews. I talked to both current and former employees. I thought I was fully prepared. I even spent two Summers as an intern at one such place. During my first interview, I handed my resume to the lady in charge of interviewing perspective employees. She asked me if I liked to travel...I thought WTH?...I naturally said yes. She replied don't even think about going on any vacation your first year if we hire you. She quickly dismissed me and called for the next candidate. I found out later this place already knew who they would hire before arriving, but wanted to see how I was dressed and my attitude. Another place called me back for "6" interviews and each one was challenging. I finally accepted an offer at a place where the CEO was on the same elevator with me the morning of my scheduled interview with his company and struck up a brief conversation. I had no idea he was the CEO. I had a good vibe from him and I guess he did of me. I was hired the following week and ended up staying there for almost 20 years. I retired early and made a managing partner who also married his daughter. Strange how things go in life.
Miranda was impressed how Andrea was confident, even though she never knew anything about the company, nor Miranda. But hey, that was the a start to show that she wasn't afraid of Miranda. I think throughout the movie Andrea wasn't like everybody else in the company. Only fear that she will lose the job, and that is it.
So...if she's not skinny, then who is? lol
sepifi hahahh

“Who is that sad little person?”
Find myself
Part of the long list of things I love about Miranda Priestly is that she's a villain. And she doesn't have to be an over-the-top, evil villain, and she can have humanity, but ultimately, she is not redeemed or anything. There is just something so great about just having the character that you love to hate and hate to love.
I worked as an assistant to chairman of a large industrial group, he hired me because i was naive and not that smart, but he knew that i will be honest, dedicated and loyal to my work. Damn he was fast at dictations and every 2 to 3 mins he will call me for a new task. Miranda hired andy coz she knew that although not smart but she will give her full effort, dedicattion and with a bit of push she can be molded as she was flexible. Being assistant to these top management is not an easy job. I worked with my boss for 5 yrs and he died while he went to his another office in another city , that same day he called me and asked how is everything? I said good, and he asked " anything else?" , i said no sir. He then hung up the phone. After three or four hours he died of cardiac arrest. May god bless his soul. RIP
How was Meryl not nominated for an Oscar for this role?
She was.
Gui 1991 🤣
The acting with Meryl Streep's eyes is incredible!!! When she says, "That wasn't a question", she surveys Andi's outfit in three different eye angles
Stanley Tucci is a great actor. He exhibits traits of a person with authority in his films. He gives very subtle and nuanced performances n films. He is very fun to watch in almost all of the films he has worked in.
I'd hire her immediately as soon as she said I'm smart. That's confidence right there
The only good thing I noticed in the job interview was that she was honest with Miranda, who sees through everyones' BS.
Lots of people in the comments saying that Andy screwed up this interview because she doesnt look prepped or dressed appropriately, and she does not lie about having an interest in fashion or knowing Miranda etc.
I think she showed honesty, integrity and assertiveness and that's what Miranda respected in her, and why she got the job. She basically does not want a phoney to answer the phone :)
Hand motion at 1:10 has always been one of the best parts lol!!
The way Miranda flipped her newspaper is soooo classy.
The fact that Andy was a journalism student and this was during the age of computers means that she would know to go to Runway's website and research the company (Interviews 101) before she ever stepped foot into Runway's offices.. But of course she needed to be a fish out of water for the story to work.
Actually there is a deleted scene that explains this. She goes to Human Resources to see what jobs are open and they offered this job or Auto Universe and the interview was right after seeing the person in HR. She had zero time to get ready for it.
@@katepausig8562 This is the fourth time I've seen you trying to give this explanation. Why are you spamming this in the comments here?
Meryl was absolutely perfect for this role
Meryl should've gotten the Oscar just for the way she closed the newspaper.
The way her eyes rolled and fluttered in 1:26 as she said the word "skinny," that's simple yet excellent acting ya'll.
Andy said she was smart and learned fast. She did definitely learn fast. I would have had to take constant notes to remember everything.
🙄
Oh my God..this is 18 years ago..I am old
“That’s all,” “Can you please spell ’Gabbana’?” and “Did you fall down and smack your little head on the pavement?” are the lines that get stuck in my head every time I watch “The Devil Wears Prada.”
The book is even better..and shows how Miranda and Andy came from similar backgrounds and family. Miranda had to work to get where she is and knew Andy had more in her than what she was giving. A good read and many more details than the movie shows
andy should not have even been hired. she was horribly prepared for this interview.
if i remember correctly, a deleted scene showed she went to the HR person and then and there she told about the two openings with interviews the very same day. so it was possible she couldnt search the company before on the net. that makes more sense
I love the look that Miranda gave andy when she came back and made her case. Miranda wanted people that had guts not pushovers.
Me too. That's the moment where Miranda saw her potential
I think Meryl Streep completely nailed her character, she's a great actor for sure.
That's why they absolutely wanted her despite the fact she refused the rôle the first time they asked her
