Angelina is the exception to your general rule. She wa born with her immense talent. She began singing when she was 1 1/2 years old. She works hard to perfect her singing. She writes all the vocal arrangements for the songs she sings. She has over 160 videos on You Tube including several of her orginal compositions. I was fortunate enough to fly to Oslo last July to see her concerts. I even got to spend time Angelina and her mother after both concerts. It was magical. Here is a girl than can sing anything and yet she has no ego whatsoever. She is a gift to the world

I agree with you. Angelina Jordan was born to sing. There was never been anyone like her. I went to see her twice to see her in Norway and I have tickeets to see her in New Hampshire on September 22.
AJ works 6hr a day 6 days a week on her singing craft. Has fone so for many years. Has an extreme professional work ethic when comes her music

The best young female artist "IMO" just 17 years old today - Angelina sings better than already established world stars. No one can stop Angelina from becoming a world star. That's just how it is! Her first album will be released in 2023 with Republic Records.
Over the years, she will become a legend for the great moments in the world. She has plenty of time. Remember she is just 17 tears old, which we forget when we see her perform. Republic Records who should also be praised for appreciating this unique talent.

If you want to be good at anything you have to practice. Then you have some who is born with with so much talent that it leaves the rest of us in awe. You can’t teach someone that Angelina is doing when they are just nine years old. You either got it or you don’t. I believe that in this cut Angelina is improvising to some extent because it doesn’t sound the same on other versions she’s done of the same song.😊

It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. She is definitely the only 9-year-old girl who understands and has the courage and the ability to sing this song from Screaming' Jay, so imbued with his power, and reorganize it according to her musical sensibility and vision. I sincerely believe that this it's the most beautiful version of this song, over 60 years since it was written and there are much of versions of it, also sung by great singers. 💛🧡❤

Angelina 9 yo. Look at her! She controls the entire recording. She has the power and ability to carry this out. The fact that she then has an outstanding fantastic voice and theatrical body language only makes everything even better. The musicians are also amazingly good. They give everything to complete this masterpiece! This little Norwegian girl reads the English lyrics while singing! She is from Norway and they speak Norwegian there. English is Angelina's 3rd language! Already at 5-6 years old, she understands exactly what is meant in the English lyrics! Incredible!

I understand that Angelina has worked for several hours a day on her voice, and still does. She may make it look easy, but she is TOTAL concentration when she sings.
It is also important to point out that Angelina is largely self-taught - no vocal coaching except for some tips on how to protect the health of her voice.
@@robertsilva631 She also attended a music school in Oslo, where her first studio recordings (age 6/7) were taken. ("I, Who Have Nothing", "Hurt"...) There you can see, how seriously she was working at this age already.

@@destitute8493 Angelina is no ordinary singer - she sang her first song snippet at age 1 1/2 and taught herself how to sing starting at age 2 by going through youtube on her mother's tablet and listening to the great jazz legends. She has never had a steady vocal coach. The only vocal advice she has gotten is how to not damage her voice - if you want to see how Angelina works - here is a rehearsal video of her at age 9 with her band at the time and only other people in the room are her mother and grandmother (who shot the video) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. @@robertsilva631 Yeah I know--been there done that. Using plosives is a special technique. You don't just pick it up by listening to recordings.
9 years and 2 months old and she arranged the music and lyrics for this studio masterpiece. She's been arranging her performances since first stepping onto the stage of Norway's Got Talent at 7 years old.

*Bar none, this, I believe to be one of the best music videos ever composed. And, in black and white much less!* *I've lost count of how many times I've watched Angelina perform this song from the various reactors.* *It blows my mind to think even when she was this young, that she could teach a bunch of vocal coaches a thing or two about vocal control.*
As you continue to review Angelina's library of covers and her self-written songs, I am convinced that you will see what we angels see and feel, Angelina is a beautiful lady with a beautiful and healing voice, and matches those two traits with a very beautiful and loving soul. She started as an extraordinary child singer who wanted to be a superstar, but has grown up to be this remarkable young lady you see and hear today, someone who is the personification of love and grace, and at the beginnings of superstardom. There is a lot of love out there for Angelina.
While there are many people who taught themselves to sing, Angelina's process at such a young age is very rare which begins with having a perfect ear. My best guess for her process is to begin by listening to a song and understanding the story and emotion of the song. Angelina then creates her version, in her head, and then begins to vocalize her arrangement as she hears it in her head. Her choices for the arrangement and for her vocal choices are nothing short of genius. Thankfully she has the talent to convey her version of the story and the emotion of the song to us lucky listeners.

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 17 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.
You just watched a Masterpiece! Destined to go down in Music History as the best performance by a 9 yr old, Period! Past, present & dare I say Future! I'd like to see anyone, young or old who can do a cover of this & with the justice it deserves as Angelina has done on every cover she does. ♥👣👸🏻
She had already won Norways Got Talent, auditioning at 7 with Billie Holidays GLOOMY SUNDAY. 8 by the final SUMMERTIME. But BANG BANG in the semi is the definitive version of this song because of the synchronicity between her voice the image of a beautiful little girl in white with flowers in her hair and the lyrics. Also by spell on you she had sung all over the world and in huge concerts. She was also publishing her book Between Two Hearts. Based on her diary its the story of her bare feet.

New subscriber - thanks to your great reaction to & appreciation of Angelina's incredible performance of this Jay Hawkins 1950's classic (which she also arranged) - at age 9. Btw - even at this young age the musicians affectionately referred to her as "The Boss".But as young as she is here - in order to better understand her musical roots, you need to watch all 4 of her Norway's Got Talent performances - starting with her audition singing the Billie Holiday classic Gloomy Sunday - at age 7. And why did Angelina go on NGT at age 7? Well - because even though she wanted to go on when she was younger, 7 was the minimum age requirement. Thank you. Vanessa, 2 down and about 170+ to go! 🙂She's not exactly someone to use as an example of how to sing. Perhaps to someone who has been singing for 25 years and is looking to refine their vocal abilities then it might be appropriate. Her poise, confidence and joy of singing jump out at you immediately so forget all the cute young kid stuff. Her voice, even at this early date is extraordinary and she works with what she can do understanding there are limitations because of her still growing body. Vanessa, I trust you are reading the comments to find out more about her, personally speaking. She's had a wonderful perspective about life in general and has been raised by a family with love in the forefront of everything they do. If you continue to follow her you will find out it is impossible to predict what she will sound like once the song starts. Beginning at 9 years old her artistic traits not only become evident but they are of a quality which are incomprehensible. She is all about love and she will find the love in the lyrics of a song and present that message to us with a genuine understanding of that emotion. Oh, it's true, some of the subject matter of a song may not be appropriate for her to sing or even understand, BUT, nevertheless, she understands the love and she conveys it to us in such a manner in most cases we begin to cry. - Who is Angelina Jordan - (For those watching her for the first time)
Angelina is a Norwegian born child prodigy in music. She's a singer/ songwriter who's arranged over 180 covers and 5 originals, all since the age of 7. Angelina began singing at 18 months old. At 2, she began teaching herself how to sing, focusing primarily on the jazz masters of decades gone by. These are artists such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James. She's also influenced by Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, and Adele, to name a few. She's also been said to be the girl of 1,000 voices. Yet even though we can hear the phrasing and style she puts in the songs, it's always Angelina that we hear.
At 7 years old, she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent. She was the last to audition. The judges had no idea who she was or what she could do. They saw a diminutive mussy haired, barefooted girl with her teeth still growing in. For her audition, she performed "Gloomy Sunday" from Billie Holiday. On TV-2, they've reported over 14 million views of this performance. This does not take into account the many hundreds of reactors showing this audition to millions more.
Needless to say, Angelina went on to win the 2014 season of NGT shortly after her 8th birthday. The family was bombarded with requests for performances, interviews, and record label offers. They turned down 90% of the requests, as they insisted that Angelina should enjoy a normal childhood.
That didn't stop Angelina from performing at select engagements around the world, singing for Heads of State, and even Barack Obama. She's spent time and worked with musicians such as Quincy Jones and Alan Walker. She first appeared on American television, The View, at 8 years old.
Angelina auditioned for America's Got Talent The Champions at 13 years old. She made it just up to the final selection of the final 5 when she dropped from the competition. It wasn't that she wasn't good enough to be in the final 5, but it was because she refused to sign with an AGT affiliated label, should she win. She knew very well what production hungry labels could do to her music. She even turned down Disney.
At 14, Angelina signed with Republic Records. Republic gave her complete artistic control as well as control over the performances she would make. She turned 17 on January 10, 2023, and will graduate from high school after the spring semester. From then on, she will embark on her full-time professional career. She's been working closely with Republic on her first album under their label. It's likely that it will drop shortly after her graduation.
Angelina was making last minute changes to the arrangement at the beginning of the video. She arranges all of her music and has since she was smaller.

Great reaction Vanessa. It is very true that Angelina has an amazing raw talent that she was born with. Other commenters have referenced her incredible work ethic and attitude which she has maintained since she first began singing, which I agree with. Another element of her musical background and experience that is sometimes overlooked or not given enough credit is her intense study of, and immersion in, the great jazz divas of the past such as Billie Holliday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Dina Washington, and others. When she was 3 years old, her grandmother Mery introduced her to Billie Holliday and jazz music. From that time forward, through her formative years, she spent many hours each day listening to jazz via records and TH-cam. By the time she recorded this video at the age of 9 she already spent 6 years immersed in this type of music. Quite frankly, to her, this is what music is supposed to sound like. Her phrasing, tone, vibrato, fry, inflections, and stylization are brilliant, and beyond her years, not because someone told her when and how to use the various techniques to produce a specific effect, but because "that's just the way it's supposed to sound". It is second nature to her. Now, at the age of 17, with the combination of this foundational experience, the professional coaching she is receiving, and her exceptional work ethic, She is quite possibly, the most well-rounded, talented, capable, and experienced artist of many generations. Later this month, when Republic Records begins their full court press of promotion, and she releases her first commercial album with them, she is going to take the music industry by storm and set a new standard for musical artistry. I count myself blessed to be around to watch her career take off and experience the birth and growth of a new legend.

I hate to say you are wrong, but Angelina was born with her talent, yes she worked hard for the 6 years between 6 and 12 to perfect her craft, but she had a head start, not like Jordan who didn’t even make the basketball team, he had to work to just get on the team, then he worked even harder to make the NBA, huge difference. By the way, everyone in the music industry has known about her since she won Norway’s Got Talent which she auditioned for at 7 and won at 8 with 46% of the vote in the finals, show me another person that age who could accomplish that by working hard!
The advancement made by Angelina un-coached over three years is quite astounding! I do have to argue that Angelina ‘was’ made, but I think self-made qualities as ‘born with it’ at this age.

A suggestion for something more current: her cover of Elvis' "Suspicious Minds" She makes it her own while still honoring him and it's just breathtaking. Or go back in time to her last song in Norway's Got Talent (when she was 7-8 and WON) which was Summertime. Or her acapella version of I'm A Fool (age 7) Norway's Got Talent. My favorite from the year after I Put A Spell on You (so when she was 10) is her live version of Feelin' Good. She is so comfortable in front of an audience from the beginning. She doesn't really perform. She just sings like an angel and lets us listen.

I have to be honest and say that I don't know how much was taught or just her natural ability but whatever the case is ,she is by far the best to ever have graced us to date :)
This was her arrangement. The notes she wrote at the beginning was last-minute adjustment to the arrangement. The producer said he smiled because she referred to the changes as her wishes. Four of the five members of the band in this recording are musicians she had performed with before.

Now go back even younger and have your mind blown again, to Norway Got Talent when Angelina was 7 years old watch all of her performances, and then rethink your idea singers are made not born. Angelina's second performance on NGT was with the other contestants standing behind her and the judges, camera's and audience in front of her and she comes out and sings a jazz standard acapella perfectly she curtsies, turns, and walks away. Every one of Angelina's performances was done to perfection with absolute stone-cold confidence Wow!

A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice.
She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. In the band, she was called a boss.

that everyone should love each other.”- AJ. Also AJ did the arrangment herself. When Angie entered school,
they thought she had a unique voice so they left it a lone & taught her music theory (at age 6) & some instruments. the last boss i heard of was Bruce Springsteen.
Years ago I heard a radio story were the reporter could not sing a note, and to investigate the theory that people can be taught to sing, she convinced a renowned vocal coach who typically worked only with high-profile names to take her as an experiment. She learned to sing on pitch and to belt like many of the best. I believe she even started singing professionally. So, perhaps there is another version of your tag line that accounts for both possibilities. Just flip the wording to make it all sound positive rather than half sounding negative (“…great singers are not born…”) to maybe something like, “I believe, great singers are made, regardless how they were born.”

Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.
Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”
From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.
Great reaction to "Baby" Angelina. She is now 17, all grown up (6' tall) & could be a Supermodel. She has been held back professionally by her family & record label to allow her a "normal" childhood & to finish her basic education. Well guess what, she graduates HS a year early this spring & is preparing for a Global Concert Tour with the release of her debut album with Republic Records (UMG). She will be releasing a single at the end of this month from the album as a teaser, followed by the full album of original songs in the fall. There's a lot of good young singers out there, but there's only a few 'greats '...AJ falls into the rare few..And on top of it all, she even separates herself from the 'great's, she's ultra great...meaning, there's something unique and special about her.. Thank you for featuring Angelina a second time, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on TH-cam, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below,
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
(g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
(h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
(i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
(j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
(k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
(l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella!
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I just have 1 question out of curiosity, your reaction was factual and very informing, but at that moment in time at 9 years old, would you have had any advice to give her or her parents, or would you have said "Just don't push it. Let nature takes it's course?" I'm 76 now, and I could never get out of barely One Octave like Rick Nelson. Angie was really trying to emulate Screamin" Jay Hawkins. That's why she showed the candle at the beginning. The only other singer that dared to try to cover Jay, just as he did it was Annie Lennox. But she wasn't 9. Keep up the gracious work.

And she does the arrangements for her songs. And this really isn't a cover, since she didn't have an original to base this from. Hawkins version was a novelty song, and CCR did a great cover, but much different.
As deep as her voice seemed for a girl this age, it still had certain hallmarks of a child's voice (just maybe not quite so young a child). By the time she turned 11, though, almost all "childlike" qualities had disappeared (or perhaps she learned how to "cover" them). Evidence of this is one of her finest performances at 10 (very nearly 11): th-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/w-d-xo.html "Feeling Good", performed live for a charity-related TV special called _The Stream Gir Tilbake_ [The Stream Gives Back]. IMO, it shows significant growth over another popular rendition of the same song just 6 months earlier on a show called _Allsang på Grensen_ [Sing-Along at the Border] - both videos are on her Official channel, if you'd like to compare the two (in a reaction, of course). Musically there are interesting differences between the two, as well.
But if you want to go back a little to a performance of "Fly Me to the Moon" she did on the U.S. TV show _The View_ when she was a little over 8½ th-cam.com/video/nBGMQ9Kx9iI/w-d-xo.html you can see how even at that young age she could sing with a lot of "fine detail". (Not to say there is no "fine detail" in this performance you just heard, but it's quite a bit more obvious in the other performance where, as I like to put it, "she's 'doing something' with damn-near every note". You'll understand what I mean when you hear it.)

I agree that hard work can improve most people's skills. I'm sure Angelina is no different. She just happens to have some amazing gifts to build on. The first time I heard this performance I became obsessed by it and listened to it over and over. What few reactors and commenters mention about it is that it's so firmly rooted in classic blues technique. How does a very young girl produce that so authentically? I'm gonna recommend one of Angelina's originals for you next. It's called 7th Heaven, and there's a very nice live concert performance of it from summer 2022.
