I love going back and watching all of these older videos. It's just Jerry having fun and sharing the excitement and enjoyment of his hobbies with us. This is the guy and the content that I miss!
Wow, I thought I'm literally the only peson that does this. I did unsubscribe a few years back after he suddenly more or less stopped making videos. About a month ago I got the urge to look up his old videos and they still were awesome. Too bad that changed completely over the years. The channel is dead beside those streams.
The "plastic prong" one is for the UK. The plastic one is usually metal and earthed but it's longer because it opens the holes for the live and neutral pins, basically in the UK you can't stick things in the plug sockets and electrocute yourself without first sticking something in earth to open the live and neutral holes. It's a good system! :)
Sorry. We can't do that here in America because we like confusing foreigners on the way me do things. There are countries that use the metric system and then there are counties that have put a man on the moon! Haha :)
theOCGN There are also countries that used the metric system to put a robot on an asteroid ;) we're still clinging to imperial though as we still have pints for beer and miles for roads :D
I used to collect NES games for years, but took a break to pursue other passions. This video made me realize how much I miss it. Thank you for getting me interested in retro gaming again. :)
The reason for the plastic prong is because U.K. sockets are 240V, it is a protection against people getting their fingers in. The plastic prong activates a mechanism that opens up the two voltage items. Sometimes it is a metal prong to be used as a grounding cable.
Man I'm really digging the longer videos Jerry. Great work, keep it up! I can't imagine how much more work it is, but it always brightens my day seeing that little "1" next to "Barnacules Nerdgasm"! Thank you!
this is cool but i decided to get an original xbox, put a bigger hard drive in and put just about every emulator in it with every game for every system
Hey, Jerry, one with plastic prong is UK. We have 240v so for safety reasons we have a plastic prong that opens up the two main power holes in the socket :D
***** they are most definitely in legal trouble. As soon as they publically released the code sources, they increased the price by 20, I'm assuming to help with lawyer fees and such. Hyperkin is fucked.
Ruhan Salam Hey, if they give me a good deal, they can call it Gaming Boys Advancement for all I care. I got my 3DS for $35 from someone who called it a Game Boy Advance 3DS.
The one with the plastic is UK, the plastic one is there as a place holder due to most British appliances using a grounding mechanism so that if the wiring is faulty it doesn't explode/burn the house down
i think n64 is still the most fun to me at least i love majoras mask and OOT and MK 64 and forsaken and all of em really oh yeah and i loooove Banjo 1 &2
From what I've been reading, it seems that the cartridges being so tight has become a bit more than just an inconvenience for some. People have reported that it can actually damage the pins inside the console, in some cases you can actually rip one or two of the pins completely out when trying to remove the cartridges. Just something you might want to keep an eye on. Absolutely love the channel! You have quickly become one of my all time favorite TH-camrs. I'm always excited when I see a new Nerdgasm video pop up in my subscriptions page :)
The RetronN 5 is overpriced junk as the included controller is a joke, the cart slots are super tight, which could damage the system and/or carts, the nonprofit emulation code Hyperkin uses was stolen from various sources without proper credit given too the original code creators(They are in legal trouble because of this). Also the emulation has various bugs that have not been addressed. I personally find it better too just own the original consoles, or hack your Wii with the Homebrew channel, as the emulators are 100% spot on accurate for all the games I've played.
I agree, and disagree at the same time. Like..I agree with the controller being a joke, tight cart slots, and the fact that them using stolen stuff is stupid(and legally questionable), but at the same time, I think it could still be useful for people that have a ton of carts, but not a ton of room to set up multiple consoles. Personally, I'd just emulate on a PC. Hell, you could get a small mini-pc, and set it up JUST for emulation, and hook it up to a TV. Then place your cart on top of it when you play a rom and it'd be pretty much the same thing...but better. But..some people like it, so if they like it, then they can use it. If people are going to get it though, they need to hurry, because if the legal issues they're having causes huge problems, they might end up pulling the retron 5 from websites and stuff. There's already some stores that refuse to sell it because of it.
txfnero The retronN 4 actually did play the games... I have no idea why they went with this route. If one does an all in one like this, just get a RetonN 4. It's better than this.
Scope-Eye video man.. I just sounded like a total dumbass, didn't I? That's what I meant. I really thought it was called the RetroN 4. Well anyways, get the Retron 3. It basically does the same thing as the Retron 5, but without the whole emulation ROM dump. I still find it weird that HyperKin went the emulation route of all things.
Andre Cruz Eh, we all make mistakes, you know? I think the emulation route is actually better for Hyperkin in a few ways: The hardware may actually be cheaper than the cloned console-on-a-chip stuff they were using (particularly when implementing multiple systems), because it's not specialized hardware at all... And going to emulation makes it possible to address some of the compatibility issues they've been facing with certain games. (Hyperkin doesn't make the Nintendo-on-a-chip hardware that they use, as far as I know, they just build a system around it. So they don't have a lot of control over those issues.) Plus, of course, it gets us HDMI with high picture quality. (NES in particular only supports composite, so the best possible signal you can get out of a stock NES or a clone is going to have all kinds of dot-crawl and color bleeding. It's possible that the clone hardware for Genesis and SNES doesn't include S-Video or RGB output either, in which case there's really no getting a good picture out of it.)
Prong plug is UK. It's longer than the two 'power prongs' and as it penetrates the top hole (o0) it opens up the 'power holes' beneath which have little shields on them. Stops kids being able to stick stuff in the socket since they would need to simultaneously insert something in the top hole and one of the power holes.
I mapped the filters to the small button on the top right of the console... very helpful as some games look better with different filters and you can change them on the fly.
I've been meaning to pick one of these up from my work at Game Star, which I saw the banner in your Retro Expo video and legit squeed like a girl. I'm glad to see that it performs up to par. We had a bit of a live demo in store w/ one of our regulars, but it's awesome to get an actual spec take from a guy who knows his stuff. Keep doing awesome, bud...maybe I'll be able to be a retro TH-camr one day. #RetroGamingBug #MuchRespect
The Imaginationland plug is the Europlug, it is the smaller ungrounded sibling of the Schuko, which is a backwards compatible universal plug for a handful of popular European plugs, It is widly considered the standard mainland European plug, but some countries like France and Denmark still use their own connectors, with which the Schuko and the Europlug are compatible though.
I love how the console plays NES,SNES, and genesis games but most of the games in your arms are N64 games. XD Either way love the videos dude. Great to see someone who actually does some kind of research into what they talk about before they do a review video.
lol the 3 prong plug is the UK. The plastic one is the earth prong and is still needed to have a pin even if its not used as the plug won't go in unless the earth pin is pushed in first to 'unlock' the other two. Hence why its slightly longer :D
The 3 square pin with one plastic prong is UK mains. The plastic prong is only a blank but serves to open up a safety gate built internally to some wall sockets and extensions. Stops idiots putting screwdrivers or whatever into the live socket and getting zapped. It's normally used as an earth in equipment that needs it so would have a brass pin instead. I think the other 2 round pin one is the rest of Europe
Barnacules Nerdgasm The plug with the plastic prong is from the United Kingdom (Where I live!!!) and the plastic prong is a safety feature to open the socket when plugged in. The socket won't open without it
greetings Barnacules Nerdgasm, the plugs are for: imagination land = almost all of the Europe (small variations of the plug in different countries, but that fits "every" country). and the last one is from UK, and I am from Portugal xD keep up the good videos as always and happy retro gaming, god knows I love my Sega Mega Drive II (Genesis II in US) :D
Hyperkin's RetroN 5, a five-slot console that plays cartridges from the NES up to the GBA, violates several licenses, according to the group behind open-source project RetroArch. A post from the group claims that the RetroN 5 incorporates the Genesis Plus GX and SNES9x Next emulators, both of which are filed under non-commercial licenses that restrict them from being used in a commercial product. The post also argues that the RetronN 5's use of open-source emulators FCEUmm (for NES games) and VBA Next (for GBA games) is problematic. Both emulators are licensed under General Public License version 2 (GPLv2), but the RetroN 5 uses GPLv3-grade code, which is technically incompatible with FCEUmm and VBA Next's coverage under GPLv2. Lastly, the authors claim there are traces of RetroArch source code in the RetroN 5's frontend (the interface that users interact with). The RetroArch code appears to be licensed under GPLv3, which forbids TIVO-ization, the act of incorporating open-source/copyleft software in a locked-down piece of hardware that doesn't allow users freedoms granted by a license like the GPL. The post claims that attempting to modify the RetroN 5 with anything beyond updates supplied by Hyperkin voids the console's warranty, and since GPLv3 forbids TIVO-ization, the RetroN 5's alleged restriction of modifying RetroArch's open-source code would be illegal. The post states that "none of the authors were contacted" in regards to the alleged use of the Genesis Plus GX, SNES9x Next or VBA Next emulators, and adds that Hyperkin has given no credit in its alleged use of RetroArch's code. At the time of this writing, only RetroN 5 controllers are available on Hyperkin's online store - the console itself is listed as "out of stock" and is not offered on Hyperkin's Amazon page.
The plug with a plastic prong is a UK plug and there is a plastic pin because you have to have 3 pins, Earth (Ground), Neutral, and Live. If earth isn't needed they use a plastic one
Barnacules Nerdgasm At around 19:00 you said "no lag at all" and started talking about on the emulators lagging on PC. I'm pretty sure that's the emulator just well... emulating! on the actual consoles they would lag at certain points :P that's just the console hardware. Keep up the good work!
The three prong plug is a UK thing, (not sure about the rest of europe) the third prong acts as a key, basiclly a Saftey feature which activates the the other 2 for usage, so little kids don't put anything that would conduct into the socket, without the third prong the other 2 won't output power, (I think, if I remember what I got told in science correctly)
Hey Jerry, I just found your videos today and I really enjoy them. I think that you are great and I love your videos. I Love to program even tho I not very good at it, but mostly do get what I want accomplished. I was wondering if you could do a video series on making a 3D printer. Keep up the good work, I am looking forward to your videos. I would also Like to see a video on building a retro gaming bar-top Cab.
Hello Barnacles, LMAO with your videos , and also with the bat knife, I guess its not sharp because takes a lot of time to cut the tape in the box LOL, peace!, great review of the console.
The three prong one is for the UK and the plastic prong is for ground on items that need it but most don't so they just have a plastic one because of the way the plug is engineered you can't plug in with out the top prong.
The second plug you found was for Europe and the 3rd is the UK. The reason for the plastic prong is because in the UK there is a ground pin (the top one) but since the plug evidently has no ground, the pin is plastic probably to make it cheaper.
Ruhan Salam yeah I know, I live in Kuwait where they use the same sockets :) (also our physics classroom is wired backwards xD the wire which is supposed to be live is neutral and the other way around, lol)
Great review I've been on the fence about getting one, but I feel better about getting one now. I do have one thought. Maybe a thin coating of dielectric grease would help with cart removal. I use it a lot at work when I need to grease electrical connections that could short out if any other grease is used.
plug packs don't need an earth (as everything is plastic), for plug packs it's usually not connected electrically, except for the UK where it opens the port for the prongs..
jerry, my family still uses crts or rear progection tvs with our stuff except for our basement guest room tv which is a "15 - "17 tv so we never use emulators but we still use old old old tv
2nd plug: European countries (all use the same plug afaik) 3rd plug: UK (Plastic plug is used in place of a grounding pin, some plugs have actual metal pins)
+Barnacules Nerdgasm when will the next retro game video be? i am a NES/Nintendo collector myself and i will soon get Contra and super C etc... i own an Original NES and i love it
I love going back and watching all of these older videos. It's just Jerry having fun and sharing the excitement and enjoyment of his hobbies with us. This is the guy and the content that I miss!

barnacules videos are never boring even when it's a 20 or 30 minutes video, at least that my opinion
Thank you Justin!
Fun fact, the awesome "SEGAAAAA" chant at the start of Sonic the Hedgehog takes up 1/8th of the entire catridge's memory!
Cheewii id pay just for a cartridge just sayin SSEEEEGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAÄ
Dude come ONNN!! You just brought back some awsome childhood memories
"the audio looks good."
Did you see how good the visuals sounded like?!
+FreakinFuzz and I thought only I could see sound
+Yonis Aweel You mean did you smell how good the visuals sounded?
Infinite Zero basically yeah
+FreakinFuzz ikr
I used to collect NES games for years, but took a break to pursue other passions. This video made me realize how much I miss it. Thank you for getting me interested in retro gaming again. :)
can't wait for retron 8 , adds n64 , ps1 , wii
The reason for the plastic prong is because U.K. sockets are 240V, it is a protection against people getting their fingers in. The plastic prong activates a mechanism that opens up the two voltage items. Sometimes it is a metal prong to be used as a grounding cable.
The power plug from imagination land is used in sweden
lol :D
And Denmark :)
in the netherlands we use that plug too
GreatestApple L oh no i didn't no what was latvia i only knew that in dutch so i didn't know it was in europe
and croatia, bosna and hercegovina and srbia
I am highly pleased that the audio looks good, big relief off my shoulders.
Imagination land? Really now Jerry? XD ah well, anyway, it's the European plug :)
Not in the uk
Awosome&Waffle HD yeah, but you also drive on the left hand side of the road ;)
JKCTech Yeah but im not from the uk im from Norway
Awosome&Waffle HD lol, just saying ;) it is true tho XD
Yeah lol
Man I'm really digging the longer videos Jerry. Great work, keep it up! I can't imagine how much more work it is, but it always brightens my day seeing that little "1" next to "Barnacules Nerdgasm"! Thank you!
"Imagination Land" = Europe
"Has a plasticy thing" = Britain
I know
+smileyhead good thing I am not in britain or eroupe which means I am not in imagination land
TheKHfan358over3d lol
David Maglioli oh and that place where all the stupid people come from = America
older youtube videos are like amazing reruns that you choose to watch
this is cool but i decided to get an original xbox, put a bigger hard drive in and put just about every emulator in it with every game for every system
I got one of those too, are you using coin-ops? the down side to this though is the xbox d-pad.... total bollocks lol
Barry Manilow yup, i think im using coin-ops 4, the d-pad does suck but its a small price to pay for such an awesome collection of games
Doing the modded xbox route will get better results.
Anthony McClintock thats what i did O.o
KROSER
i know. im just saying doing it that way is better than the retron5.
I was also really surprised with how good it looks in widescreen.
14:42 Audio looks good?
Yeah, I can see sound waves... I thought everyone could?
Hey, Jerry, one with plastic prong is UK. We have 240v so for safety reasons we have a plastic prong that opens up the two main power holes in the socket :D
Aren't these guys being sued for stealing the emulator code?
I don't know if they're being sued but they definitely stole the code.
***** they are most definitely in legal trouble. As soon as they publically released the code sources, they increased the price by 20, I'm assuming to help with lawyer fees and such.
Hyperkin is fucked.
It's so exciting watching your channel grow so fast. I've been watching before you had 50k. Keep up the good work :)
It kinda drives me nuts when people say "Game Boy Advanced."
why?
***** O shit, yeh. I didn't even fucking notice that and I play my GBA SP on a daily basis, high levels of intelligence right there
That bugs me too. Every day on Craigslist there's someone selling a Game Boy Advanced.
cptnoremac Lmao this is why you don't buy GBs on Craigslist
Ruhan Salam
Hey, if they give me a good deal, they can call it Gaming Boys Advancement for all I care. I got my 3DS for $35 from someone who called it a Game Boy Advance 3DS.
I laughed when you talked about how we used to have to wait to reach a checkpoint and actually write down codes for the save.. lol, love it
Yay europe is a dreamland xD
The one with the plastic is UK, the plastic one is there as a place holder due to most British appliances using a grounding mechanism so that if the wiring is faulty it doesn't explode/burn the house down
In my opinion they fucked u MAJORLY not including N64 in this package. HUGE mistake.
italipino24 They can't for legal reasons, the Copyright for N64 doesn't expire for another few years.
Barnacules Nerdgasm oh that makes sense.
i think n64 is still the most fun to me at least i love majoras mask and OOT and MK 64 and forsaken and all of em really oh yeah and i loooove Banjo 1 &2
Would had been cool too huh, then that stick on the controller would had been more useful.
Uteopia you can call me crazy but I actually thought the world is not enough was better than goldeneye especially in terms of multiplayer

Thank you for uploading this amazing video, Jerry! The nostalgia is unreal
You hit me right in the childhood with sonic... ordering one now.
Jerry reviewed that damn thing like it's the new gen console and made me feel like we were back in 80-90's era...
Ur vids are never boring I look forward to ur videos and I love your new drone

Kickin' it old school. Love that Zelda golden cartridge.
Thank you for this review! I was just looking at this in a store over the weekend and I want one!
The plastic prong is a UK plug, it is a safety feature which reveals the live part of the socket when you put it into the outlet I believe.
I love how the console plays NES,SNES, and genesis games but most of the games in your arms are N64 games. XD
Either way love the videos dude. Great to see someone who actually does some kind of research into what they talk about before they do a review video.
I have the Retron 3! It has NES, SNES, & Genesis. SNES is my personal favourite.
lol the 3 prong plug is the UK. The plastic one is the earth prong and is still needed to have a pin even if its not used as the plug won't go in unless the earth pin is pushed in first to 'unlock' the other two. Hence why its slightly longer :D
the power adapter with the plastic prong is Irish, the plastic prong is for stability becasue smaller plugs are bottom heavy and fall out
The 3 prong one is UK, the top prong is slightly longer, so it opens up the bottom 2 holes in the plug socket. It's a safety feature :D
Great video Barnacules, keep up the great work!
The 3 square pin with one plastic prong is UK mains. The plastic prong is only a blank but serves to open up a safety gate built internally to some wall sockets and extensions. Barnacules Nerdgasm The plug with the plastic prong is from the United Kingdom (Where I live!!!) and the plastic prong is a safety feature to open the socket when plugged in. The socket won't open without it
The plastic prong is basically the key to unlock the other two ports, so you can stick anything in the socket.
That was the best Zelda game! I haven't been able to get into one since.
I really love how this system supports a "hot-swap" type game change.
that's definitely a console worth it if u are a old school gamer
nice review Barnacules
Keep doing what you do dude... Enjoyed watching the vid!
I'd like to see a follow up review a few weeks down the line.
I'd like to buy one, but the Amazon reviews are pretty mixed.
Hey man I am a HUGE FAN I am a nerd and to see a fellow nerd it great, I hope you are doing well.
greetings Barnacules Nerdgasm, the plugs are for:
imagination land = almost all of the Europe (small variations of the plug in different countries, but that fits "every" country).
and the last one is from UK,
and I am from Portugal xD
keep up the good videos as always and happy retro gaming, god knows I love my Sega Mega Drive II (Genesis II in US) :D
I LOVE DORKLY!!!! I watch them all the time!
This second adapter is an European adapter :) We use it in Poland, Germany etc.
the 3 prong plug is for Great Britain (UK) and the plastic prong is for earthing the appliance if needed.
Hola Barnacules! Love your channel man.
14:43 "the audio looks good" wat
Good video as always, nevertheless!
Hey mqn keep up the good work you deserve a lot more subs and I hope you get there keep it up
hahaha your outro music reminds me of the Seoul Metro jingles that play when a train is approaching
Jerry, I think you forgot an important aspect. How about emulation of old FX processors on the SNES? Does Stunt Race FX work for example?
"The audio looks good" XD oh Barnacules!
I started to look, if I had a burnt bright white pixel on my display, but thank god, it was in your little television! ;p
Hey Jerry,
I just found your videos today and I really enjoy them.
I guess Jerry don't have enough time for all his fans
But that's OK I will still watch your videos, because i think your awesome.
14:42 "Audio looks good" Nice Jerry, very nice ;)
This video made me feel so nostalgic :D
Yea Barnacules the audio looks good!
love the Batknife and love the Retron 5. Awesome video.
The audio looks good, lol.
Great video, extremely informative, Ty
Funny that it did not verify the SMW game the first time, but did after you inserted and removed the NES cart.
Will you ever bring back codegasm? I loved those videos.
The second plug you found was for Europe and the 3rd is the UK. The reason for the plastic prong is because in the UK there is a ground pin (the top one) but since the plug evidently has no ground, the pin is plastic probably to make it cheaper.
there is a safety mechanism which is released using the prong
Ruhan Salam yeah I know, I live in Kuwait where they use the same sockets :) (also our physics classroom is wired backwards xD the wire which is supposed to be live is neutral and the other way around, lol)
***** XD
I'm thinking of getting a 3D printer under a $1000. I'm looking at the printrbot simple metal now. Looks very solid and reliable.
Great review I've been on the fence about getting one, but I feel better about getting one now. I do have one thought. Maybe a thin coating of dielectric grease would help with cart removal. I use it a lot at work when I need to grease electrical connections that could short out if any other grease is used.
+jason c: the new model for 2015 is much better and you will not have that problem.
HEY @Barnacules Nerdgasm
The adapter that you didnt know is the on that we in Norway,Sweden and Danmark use
(Actually the scandinavia)
plug packs don't need an earth (as everything is plastic), for plug packs it's usually not connected electrically, except for the UK where it opens the port for the prongs..
jerry, my family still uses crts or rear progection tvs with our stuff except for our basement guest room tv which is a "15 - "17 tv so we never use emulators but we still use old old old tv
Yeah baby! Love it. Think I'll have to get one of those.
Smashing review. So is there something like this without the cart slots for running roms from a memory card? Thanks for any tips.
2nd plug: European countries (all use the same plug afaik)
3rd plug: UK (Plastic plug is used in place of a grounding pin, some plugs have actual metal pins)
Your description below the video says it has AV support. It doesn't. Also, the controller cradle allows it to support the SEGA power base.
Great videos brotha, I just subscribed I was wondering do you recommend going with this system as opposed to getting the originals?
"Time to bust out my old cartridges!" *Cartridges fall*
+1 Subscriber sir!
Retro gaming bub!! Keep up the good work.
You can visibly see the lag between when you push the buttons and what happens on the screen with Mario All Stars.
+Barnacules Nerdgasm when will the next retro game video be? i am a NES/Nintendo collector myself and i will soon get Contra and super C etc... i own an Original NES and i love it
Thank you for all the content.
The audio does look pretty fantastic.
Man I miss his videos like this.. 😥
You and me both Andy!
@@Barnacules Nothin to it but to do it. Pardon my He-Man reference, but The Power is Yours!
