  • MEDEA (1797)
Opéra comique in three acts by Luigi Cherubini.
Above, is Medea's act aria 'Del fiero duol'. At the temple, Medea is preparing to kill her children out of anger at Jason's cheating marriage to Creon's daughter; Glauce. In this aria, Medea goes as far as raising the spear with which she shall stab her children - but before laying the spear into them, she fell into thoughts of mercy for her children that are after all her own flesh and blood, just as they are Jason's. Quickly enough, she decides to ignore her motherly cares and commits to her "plan" in which Jason shall pay the greatest price possible - his children.
In this recording, the legendary Maria Callas is Medea and conducting is the maestro Vittorio Gui with the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Firenze e Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Recorded on the 7th of May, 1953 as a part of the musical festival of Florence.

I was about to write a long comment about this but this summarizes it basically.. She creates a painting with this.. I've never understood why, but with Gui + Maria this piece becomes a sea.. waves of color, storm, quite, and sometimes tsunamis...

The most cinematic of Callas' roles. You can see every instinct and gesture of her portrayal in front of you.
Simply seminal what Callas achieved in this role. Those sequential phrases dipping in and out of octaves is simply ridiculous.

When people say callas was overrated. I simply will show them this and then will shut them up for good

Hypnotic. Callas takes us on a ride through so many emotions it's hard to keep pace. Perhaps her most frightening role, yet all of her portrayal remains within the boundaries of the Classical style. I've always thought of this as the best Gluck opera not actually written by Gluck, and Callas' magnificent portrayal gives me no reason to change my thoughts. Thank you!

Callas felt the music of this piece through her veins. Although, Gluck? I find Gluck's music incredibly beautiful, and honestly some scenes (most notably the finale) are anything but beautiful - in the best way possible. Although this music is in the classical style, it is so much more than grandiosity and opulence... This piece is the most modern and most ancient form of music and tragedy ever written in my opinion.

CALLAS "In the ZONE" singing, simple, effortless, a powerful soliloquy come to life. I see her practicing this aria making a simple breakfast of eggs, espresso, spreading a generous amount of butter onto a warm baguette, the CALLAS way. The greatest Opera singer in history, signed, sealed and delivered via MEDEA.. I think I'll have a fried egg sandwich with lots of Butta.

The genius of Maria is enormous!!! Her vocal instrument unsurpassable!!! She evokes emotions while submerging her entire being into every role she portraiys , I m so emotional every time I listened to her Medea, Butterfly, Norma in all her roles she gave unsurpassable performances....DIVINA PER SEMPRE!

Firenze, the ultimate. In some ways the most extraordinary night in her career. I mean there are so many, but this role was maybe more than any other HER role, and in Firenze she was incandescent. She sung so many fantastic Medeas after this, but this is for me the greatest of all.

Vocally this performance is indeed beyond belief... But I don't think that her characterization of Medea ever surpassed that of Dallas in 1958. That night was "special", whether it be onstage or off (we all know what happened). I do want to mention this though - isn't the 1953 Milan Medea with Bernstein terrible? Maria is ofcourse in good voice, but Bernstein's conduction of that classical opera is like dry crackers. Absolutely no color, terrible tempi, bland, lacking in style...

      N. Lidar I haven’t listened to the Bernstein Medea for a long time, but there might be a reason for that! What are your favourite moments from Dallas?

@@greatmomentsofopera7170 The way she bites into the words like a cannibal in Nemici senza cor is blood boiling... And then by Soffrir non posso (Act II) I believe Callas was informed of her firing from the Met, so she sounds extra agitated... I haven't heard her as venomous. For some unexplainable reason I also love Ebben, tutto mi manca... Her heavy breathing is so stirring. Ofcourse, nobody sang Oh gioia! E li ama ancor better than her. The whole recording is unforgettable

Ave Nuri!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ti consiglio assolutamente l'opera Medea!

Ave Nuri... e a risentirci a presto... Elsa.
