    So your telling me an athlete, who's half their discipline involves running 40m with a heavy pole as fast as they can, can run 100m very well? Crazy.

    Mondo's clearly a generational talent (Bubka for at least the next 4yr OLY Cycle given his insane longevity from '81 - '01, 7 WC/OLY Golds & 35 WRs is still the PV GOAT imo esp when you consider he couldn't compete @'84 OLY due to the Soviet Boycott & the WC were every 4yrs back then unlike today), but PV has the in-built advantage of being able to break the WR 1cm at a time which is perfect for Mondo to collect those WR Bonuses! 10.08 (+0.3) - 10.24 (+1.6) is SWE's All-Time 100m Top 5 range, with more training & good legal tailwind, want to see Mondo go for at least the #5 spot as he's got a high 10.1/low 10.2s in him for sure. That event needs to be held annually after the WC in Sep with a 'bigger card' that includes a number of match-ups;
    - Femke wants to race Keely in a 600m race, add in new 600m WR Holder Mary Moraa & Athing Mu in that race and that WR goes again!
    - 300m race between any of Tebogo, Noah, MHS, Fred, Kenny, Gardiner, Norman & Jereem
    - 300m race between any of Gabby, Syd, Femke, Paulino, Shaunae, Shericka, Rhasidat & Klaver
    - 100m race between the big JAM Throwers; Rajindra Campbell, Roje Stona & Fedrick Dacres

    Yes, speed is definitely an essential component in pole vault. For example: former pole vault legend Sergey Bubka ran 100m 10.2 and in his autobiography he admits that at least once he managed to clear 6.30-6-35 during his training, over rubber band bar. Many people keep saying that the reason why his official world record wasn't better than 6.15, was the fact that he decided to make more money - by setting the bar every time only 1cm higher (just like Duplantis does).

    Rob, ok, I watched this all the way through. Quite a good video, and you did some good research and presented some good perspectives. Just a couple of things: The title is ridiculous - you really need to think of a more honest title for this. The second thing is Duplantis, 27th fastest Swedish performance of all time with that 10.37s btw, is exceptionally strong in his core and in his upper arms which, when coupled with his speed on the runway, means he can hold and bend bigger poles and hence clear greater heights. In other words, he is specifically trained for the pole vault event, just as you would expect.

    Sergey Bubka was also a 100m man , and Bubka broke the world record 35 times.
    Nike was giving Bubka a cash bonus for each world record he broke, and he milked it. I think Duplantis has the same kinda Nike deal. That is why Duplantis clears the world record a centimeter at a time. Can't blame them for milking the Nike money.
    Both men are very fast sprinters.

      @bjorneriksson2404 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I read that he (Mondo) only gets one WR bonus per year from Nike, so not the same deal as Bubka. I think there are other reasons to just raise it by 1 cm at a time. E.g. that it increases the possibility of success (which also increases his market value if he often ends up jumping on WR heights with a fair chance of succeeding now and then). It's also sort of become customary as well, since Bubka's days. Everyone seems to be doing it now, in both pole vault and high jump.

    He is holding back, and has broken the world record many times, in small increments because there is a bonus in track and field (in some competitions) if you win with a new world record. But, it might prevent us from seeing his full potential in his prime. As he gets older, or is injured, he might start to decline. He is capable of so much more right now, but he is in a sport where pro athletes are (relatively) underpaid, with so few making most of the money compared to pros in other sports.

    Of course he can sprint. The speed at takeoff is essential to bend the pole and achieve the height. If a pole vaulter did not have the "endurance" to run a100m fast, he would not be able to make multiple vaults in a competition. As a similar example Jonathon Edwards was almost world class at 60m without a block start. when he set the triple jump record. Over 30m he was untouchable. They TRAIN for that speed as well as the technical part of their event. However the pole vault IS a much appreciated event world wide. Perhaps Americans just have short attention spans to match the availability of good sprinters in the area, so they don't see it the same..

    I'm not that surprised, there are a lot of sport that even if they are not about running need a lot of speed to be good. Pole Vault and long jump are 2 of them. The speed is what will translate power into the pole, and long jump even if you have good elevation, if you don't have speed, you won't go far. Mike Powell also had a pretty decent 100m time. His highschool time was 10.45 which seems not that good but at the time he did his long jump WR, in the same competition Carl Lewis set the WR at 9.86. So Mike Powell was closer to the 100m WR that Duplantis is from the 100m WR today. So bottom line you can't be at the top of the pole vault or long jump if you don't run fast

Of course from time to time, we see outliers, early in the season...PB's etc also get set.
