Greek tyrants and even the Roman kings (before being defunct) were something of the dictators that Schmitt says Rousseau mentions. They were the catalyst of popular discontent which is the reason why they got either killed or their power was greatly reduced over time. Well, Schmitt isn't doing an exhaustive take on the ancient world; his point is that dictatorship in essence disappeared as a live concept in the West for a long time. Bodin lists historical precedents, which Schmitt cites, and the list is longer than the ones I mentioned--all to the same point, though. No comment held for review. Weird.
