Diaz is by far not the 2nd worse ump in the league. That honor should go to CB Buckner now that cowboy Joe has retired. Diaz may not be the best, but he doesn't have a quick hook. He allows players and managers alike to argue, unlike others that will immediately toss you for arguing balls and strikes.

I was once watching a Cubs game on the At-Bat Ap and Jake Arrieta was pitching and I saw three balls called all of which were firmly in the strike zone and I thought I’ll bet CB Bucknor is the home plate umpire. When I watched the rebroadcast later-sure enough it was.

  • @umpinmass

Most of the pitches he got wrong were on the outside corner, which are very hittable balls and he was pretty consistent. I was an umpire for 50 years and like to think I can be objective. He may be in the top ten worst but I believe as an overall umpire, not just balls and strikes, Angel is worst, then I would put in CB Bucknor, Ron Kulpa and Phil Cuzzi in order.

As an umpire I think having bonuses or whatever for good work is a good idea. I also think it would be cool if mlb brought some of the pitch tracking technology to college and high school, not only for pitchers but also umpires. If MLB could grab umpires who are good at those levels for the minors it would work better than going to a camp because the minors is on the field action, and ex umpires can help train newbies in the low levels of the minors

Players, coaches and managers ultimately get "let go" when they do not perform at a certain level. It should be the same for umpires. If their numbers fall below a certain level, they need to be released or sent down to the minors to work on their performance. Pay the top performing umpires certain performance bonuses and incentives. There is likely several minor league "hot shot" umpires that can do better right now than many older MLB umpires who refuse to retire!

A lot of those strikes could have gone either way. Umpiring is extremely stressful, and takes both physical and mental stamina to maintain a cool head and place yourself in the right frame of mind to really be good at it. You must always concentrate, and pau attention to the pitcher, the better, and what's going on along the basepaths. Angel Hernande and this guy are both petty bad because they aren't mentally cut out for that type of job.

I believe the technology is now available for balls and strikes to be taken away from the HP umpire. Keep an umpire there for all of the other reasons, play at the plate, foul balls, HBP, etc, but take the balls and strikes away from them. I’m aware that this could only be done on the MLB level but there’s to much riding on all the games, peoples lively hoods, careers ending and many other issues are at stake…..

For the time being, baseball is played by human beings and called by umpires who are human beings. In an effort to mold the game for television and technology, the powers that be would like to eliminate human error that ordinarily, the fans of the past would simply chalk up to just that, human error. The game has already been fouled by pitch clocks, shift rules, call challenges and juiced balls to make the pace move along and give greater advantage to the hitter. The day they replace umpires with machines, is the day I give up on baseball.

He is easily fooled by the catcher's framing. A catcher will quickly move a "ball" into the strike zone to deceitfully fool the ump. This trick works too often and umps are put into "worst ump" TH-cam videos all the time. It really is the one time in sports where the refs rely on the lies and deceipt of one player to rule against another player.
Either fix the way balls and strikes are called or get rid of framing.

With AI now getting better by the day I bet MLB could use it to check every pitch and call and it wouldnt take long at all for it to be better than the umpires. MLB can still have umpires but make them more like the queen where they don’t have so much power but it’s more for tradition. I guarantee that would make the ego umpires really butt hurt. I think the mlb should definitely do more to keep bad umpires from hurting games and teams especially the big games and I think that good umpires should get a bonus or something as a reward for being great at there job cause I guarantee the ones that are great and no one ever talks about do things to stay on top of there game and keep their minds sharp.

ALL unions protect the "worst" performers. Teacher's unions, police unions, etc. etc. That's literally the reason why groups unionize in the first place.

@4:27, terrible sequencing. There's a lefty batting, then a righty batting, then a reply from a different angle...... of a lefty? @4:38, is that a totally different plate appearance?

All MLB umpires are the same. Due to their egos and the way they call a game is not acceptable. In this day and age one would think that they should be replaced with an electronic method. They just ruin the game for the fans. No one will ever miss them.

Why doesn’t the League use post game analysis and stats to pick the best umpires for the next game? And fire the lowest 5%? Who wants bad umpires on a game that has hundreds of millions of dollars on the line?

Gotta disagree! Laz is more than competent compared to the new wave of young umpires. You’re an idiot if you truly believe this!

Laz Diaz is so far away from being the 2nd worst umpire in baseball, let alone baseball history. A bitter Red Sox fan is all this video is. Have you ever seen any of his *other* games?

I’m sure in the early goes of baseball there were umps that fixed games and stuff but still CB AND Hernandez were still worse than those guys. I mean at least they did it on purpose.

I think Jon Bois did a video recently on the number of times umpires and players have forgotten the count. Strangely enough, it's not that unusual an occurrence.

Diaz is by most the 2nd worst umpire but is absolutely hilarious and one of the nicest people ever just like Angel Hernandez, they both suck at their job but they are very nice

It’s all good they are all working on borrowed time these days I’d say within the next 5 to 10 years they’ll be replaced by computers, one can only hope and count the days!!

I will say this for as bad as Laz Diaz is and he really is, at least he’s entertaining. Just see his ejections of Joe Girardi and Aaron Boone. Those ejections are hilarious

New to baseball and an Englishman so be kind but why when umpires make mistakes are they not dropped down to the minors and the best minor umps get a chance in the majors thats what happens in the football over here if a ref has a terrible game he can be dropped to division 1 or 2 to get out of the limelight and get back on track before going back to the premier league if he earns it

As an experienced high school ump, I can say this: there are 2 kinds of umpires, those who get the count messed up and rookies

With Laz and the Angels game, he had the right call. He legit had the right count, Santana just didn’t know he called a strike on the steal on 3rd he thought he called it as a ball. It was The Angels manager didn’t challenge it, he and all other umpires had the right count just not the manager. So it’s not on him.

You are relying too much on the strike zone graphic that is well known to be terribly inaccurate. many of the calls were correct.

The difference between a player and an umpire that sucks is that the player will be sent down to the minors in about a week.
