Installing Mile Marker Hubs on a WD21 Pathfinder

  • My '95 Pathfinder came with automatic locking hubs (also called 4x4 lockouts), which disengage the front drivetrain when you're not using 4x4. Mine were worn out and unpredictable. They'd stop mid disengagement and clatter, or refuse to lock, or refuse to unlock, and even when they were working right, I was never sure if they were locked or not. They can be rebuilt, but I decided to replace them with hubs that would stay locked if I wanted them to.
    Mile Markers aren't the best hubs available, but the price was right, and I don't generally beat on this rig hard enough to break things. If I manage to grenade them I'll make an update.
    [UPDATE: I've run these hubs for a while and have since transferred them to another Pathfinder. They still work great, but the chrome on the faces is starting to bubble and peel already.]
    I use the wrong tool for the job pretty often, but I won't be using a long-shaft Allen socket for a job like this again. The long Allens just aren't meant for this kind of torque. Either get a short Allen socket, or if you already have a long one, cut it down to a manageable length.
    If you have other Pathfinder related questions, check out NPORA (www.nissanpathfinders.net). That's where I find info for working on my rig. These threads may be relevant:
    Step-by-step writeup for Warn manual hubs on a WD21: www.nissanpathf...
    If you want to put manual hubs on your R50 ('96-'04), read this: www.nissanpathf...
    The process I go through in this video should be the same for any first-gen (WD21) Pathfinder or Hardbody pickup (D21). Spline count varies by year, so be sure to check before buying hubs.

    I absolutely adore my WD21. I've owned several notable classic cars/motorcycles, but my WD is without question the best daily-driver I've ever had. Amazing classic looks with more offroad capabilities than literally anything available for sale in 2019. I'll never sell it. Cheers.

    Those 6 bolts at the start like to seize up if your vehicle is driven in the winter/ salt. If i tried that with a 3/8 ratchet is definitely would break the tool. small torch works wonders for these particular bolts

      Nope. I usually take the faces back off and retorque the hub bolts after they've had a few days to settle in, same as I do for lug nuts. After that, they stay tight.

    you have to engage 4x4 by turning them on the wheel?
    I have a Terrano too (1990) (in US pathfinder, in EU terrano), same car. Mine has a 3.0 benzin engine, carburator, pure power. Im putting 4L or 4H with a shifter next to the gearbox shifter. Having no problems with it but I see you removed the auto running hubs like mine. Is there a advantage? Offroad ability, quality of the hubs...?
    greetings from Croatia
    peace

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the hubs aren't locked, then yes, I have to get out and lock them before I can shift to 4H and have it do anything. But when they are locked, I can shift between 2H and 4H while moving (turning off a cleared road onto a snowy one). The auto hubs require you to stop before shifting if they're not locked already, and they unlock when you back up, so I was never really sure if they were locked or not. I've heard of them unlocking when you're trying to rock the truck out of being stuck somewhere. Mine were also worn out and unreliable. Even when they worked as designed, I was tired of second-guessing them. The manual hubs stay where they're put, so I leave them locked all winter so I can shift back and forth as needed and leave them unlocked the rest of the time to save some wear and drag. They also give me the option to put the shifter in 4LO with the hubs unlocked, which is great for parking trailers.
      You've got a carburetor? Interesting, I thought only Saudi Arabia got that with the V6. 80s trucks here got an early fuel injection that looks like a carburetor but has more to go wrong, mine got the proper fuel injection that came later. Greetings from Washington State!

      oh, I get it. Ill stick I guess with my auto free run hubs becouse I dont have very much snow in the mediteran and its my third car in the house with 3000 kilometers per year. Maybe I renew the hubs for the next winter anyway. Except original Nissan hubs, which other you recomend?
      About the engine, well, it stays electro injection on the top of the engine. We have two types of v6 3.0 petrol/benzin engines here. The older one like mine (1990) with 136hp and the newer with 150hp with direct pump injection (german; direkteinspritzung). For the older ones I think they are made for the american market becouse they have a mile counter to the kilometer counter and the speedometer shows both, miles and kilometers. The new ones with more hp have only kilometers on the tachograf.
      what do hubs cost in the US?
      salute :)

      @@antemuralechristianitatis2175 The Warns are popular, but were more than I wanted to pay at the time. I think I paid $140ish for the Mile Markers I used. They've held up pretty well except that the chrome plating sucks and has largely fallen off of the rings (though not the dials, for some reason). Check your spline count before ordering, some older stuff is 27 spline, later like mine is 28 spline. There aren't as many 27 spline rigs out there (or out here at least), so you may get lucky and find used ones cheaper if you've got the earlier spline count.
      Sounds like you got the same engines we did--a throttle-body injected version to start with and then a multiport version a few years later with a little more power.
      And yeah, I'll bet you don't have much snow out there! I've been plowing snow out of the driveway all winter and I'm looking forward to seeing it all melt off.
      And hey, if you haven't, check out the NPORA forum! Lots of good info on these things over there.

    I installed a set of SKP hubs on my 2002 Xterra and would grind and produce brass dust from rubbing and make noise, so removed and put old ones back on , any idea what I did wrong!

      @Darwinpasta  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with the SKP hubs, but, yeah, that ain't good. I would check that the snap rings are in the right place and the hubs are engaged or disengaged fully. Did one or both make dust? If just one, you could have a defective unit. See if you can find the brass part that the dust came from.

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly don't remember, this was a while ago. I would try installing the hubs with the bolts you have, and if they bottom out before the hub is tight, shorten them or find shorter bolts elsewhere. You can kind of see how the bolt heads are spaced out way further on the autos vs the manuals I installed; if yours look similar you could probably just measure the difference in thickness and subtract that much from the bolt length.

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought them from McBay Performance on eBay, but that was ages ago, no idea if they're still around/in stock. Check your spline count before ordering hubs in case your '89 has the 27-spline axles. The hubs I installed here are 28-spline.

    hey man I've got a Lil problem doing mine I got a diffrent brand of hubs but my problem is the bottom half of the hub only goes to first indent then it won't go in further

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If by indent you mean the snap ring grooves, then that's normal, the snap ring goes on the outer groove for manual hubs or the inner groove for autos. Or is the hub not seating right? I'm not sure I understand what you're working with.

    • @Garsia95
      @Garsia95 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Darwinpasta yea sorry what I ment it won't seat all the way it will just go in it will just gon in like half inch then It gets stuck and when I try to push it in more the axle pushes in so I can't go past the manuel snap ring ridge to put it on

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, okay. That's odd. First thing I'd check is to be sure you didn't put the snap ring back in for safekeeping LOL. Then inspect the splines on both and look for dirt or chips or whatever left over from the machining process. Could be something in the snap ring groove or something inside the hub, or even a manufacturing problem that led to a spline not getting cut properly.

  • @lucaslucas6125

    I replaced mine to manual hubs too like 3 months ago for a cheap brand. There’s a freaking growling noise coming from the driver side. I replaced the wheel bearings and the noise still going on. Do you think there’s a chance that the noise is coming from the locking hubs I got? Anyone has the same problem? Thank you

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is entirely possible. When the hub isn't engaged, the body of the hub and the part the CV splines into have to spin independently. If those weren't greased at the factory, you may need to dig in there and do it yourself. If this is the case, the noise should go away when you lock the hub.

    • @lucaslucas6125
      @lucaslucas6125 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, you saved my life now. I’ve asked many people and mechanics and it’s been more than a month and no one never knew what that was. Put some grease in it and the noise went away for at least a day 😂 appreciate that bro

  • @Teekay617
    @Teekay617 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So no snap ring?

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a snap ring. There are two grooves in the CV axle, and which one the ring goes in depends on whether you have auto or manual hubs.

    Did you seen any gas milage change?

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trey Bradley The manual hubs disengage the front drivetrain the same as the stock auto hubs did, so there shouldn't be much if any difference in economy. The R50 Pathfinders came with drive flanges which don't disengage ever. Manual hubs will improve mileage on an R50; on a WD21 like mine they just make the 4x more reliable.

    • @Darwinpasta

      Check your spline count. If it's 27, hubs from an '86.5-89 Pathfinder or four-cylinder Hardbody up to '93 should fit. If it's a 28, it'll take the same hubs I used. Should be the same for 90+ Pathfinder, '94+ four-cylinder HB, and early Xterra and Frontier.
      Looks like Mile Marker makes hubs for either 27 or 28 spline. 27 is part 430, 28 is part 435. Check before ordering, though.
