AISIN 4x4 Locking Hub Dial - Clutch to Pawl Assembly - FIX IT DIY! Toyota Suzuki Mitsubishi Isuzu

  • This video is specifically covering the assembly of the AISIN Sekei 4x4 manual locking hub clutch assembly. Often times people take the hub apart to clean it, but then find when they put it back together it locks the first time they turn the dial to the "Lock" position, but then, when they turn it to the "Free" position, it stays locked. This is caused by an improper assembly of the Clutch, Spring, and Follower Pawl.
It's an easy fix, but it's not intuitive. You don't have to remove the hub body, just the dial cover. All you'll need is a ratchet, a 10mm socket, and a small screwdriver.
Amazon Affiliate link for the Toyota Gasket that goes between the hub dial body and the locking hub: amzn.to/2T2Cpzl
Torque wrench like the one I used in the video: amzn.to/3rFiyqW
I wasn't paid to promote these amazon links, but if you do buy something on amazon from this link I'll get a small commission paid by amazon and/or the seller. No extra cost to you.

Just wanted to say this video saved me today. My truck was only getting drive to 3 wheels. After seeing that the shaft to the wheel was spinning in 4x4 I figured my hub dial was broken. I was able to take it apart, see that nothing was broken, clean and lubricate all parts, and reassemble. Now my '96 Tacoma is actually 4 wheel drive instead of 3. Thanks!

God damn! I know this is a 6 year old video but it is one of the best DIY video I have ever seen. Now I can give maintenance to my Hilux's 4x4 locking hub dials, where I need a lot of force to move it. Thanks for the video.

    • @WheeliePete
      @WheeliePete  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Another thing that can make the dial hard to turn is a jammed up o-ring between the dial and the top cover. To get to that one you have to take the dial out of the top cover via the snap ring on the back of the dial cover. Be careful not to lose the detent ball and spring in the dial handle when you pull it out of the cover. I really need to sit down and do a video on that part also...

I bought a really cheap 4runner and the guy told me on the test drive that he never tried 4x4.
I found out the hard way 4x4 wasn’t working by getting stuck.
I looked at service records from 2 years ago and the shop charged the owner at the time $520 to remove and replace both hubs - finding the right front hub needed to be replaced.
Within 1 hour of watching this video, I had reassembled the hub that was improperly installed by procar and they had charged the previous owner $520 and made the 4x4 inoperable. Thank you!

I have serious doubts about the 59 people who down-voted this. How could you not like a video as informational and helpful as this? I've watched a LOT of instructional YT vids and this is right up there in the top 10. A most excellent tutorial. Today I had to disassemble, clean and re-assemble a set of these on a Hliux and I've never even touched one before. With the help from this tutorial I managed to do the whole job with both hubs and they work perfectly! Thank you indeed.

Thank you so much. Even when I compared the “broken” hub to the properly assembled one, I didn’t notice how the connecting spring held the pawl to the hub clutch. Lifting the spring over the tiny little tabs did the trick. I was ready to buy a new hub for big money, but only ended up spending about $4 for a new gasket. Makes me feel better, after reading some of the comments, that even some pro shops were assembling hubs improperly. I spent hours of frustration (intense swearing involved) trying to get the hub assembled, but after watching your video it took about 15 minutes to put it all back together and install. No swearing whatsoever.

I just changed the left axle on my 75 series. Put it all together just as I found it (doing it all by youtube). Went for a 100 km drive to test it out. The hub became a bit warm, I wondered why. Got to review the freewheeling hub on youtube and saw that it had the bearing attached to the FW Hub. That wasn't the case when I pulled mine out and put it in. After taking off the other side I saw that the bearing was attached properly. Then I found your video. Just one of the best visual instruction videos I have ever seen. Thanks man. You probably saved me huge dollars.

Dude you just saved me $100, the last I can do is tip you $5. When I took my hub assembly off, the clutch just fell out, after replacing my CV joint I knew something wasn't right because it wouldn't unlock after locking it, I figured it needed to be pulled back. Judging by the CV I replaced it was a rebuilt CV joint from NAPA and whoever did the job messed up the hub assembly. Thanks to this video I was able to take it all apart and rebuild it and now it works! Thanks for such a great how to video.

Hi Pete! Its me again..the clicking noise on my cruiser right front wheel. I used your video to strip the hub. I checked as i opened the hub...1st the connecting spring was wrongly fitted..2nd the clutch spring was also wrong..3rdly..the main problem..the lock washer was loose in front of the shaft..so it blocked the engagement!..the clicking noise was then from the driveshaft inside the diff?..the shaft was pushing backwards by the locking washer!..thanks again Pete for your video i clean , put new greese and assemble it according to your video. And Whala!! 100%...thanks Pete!!

Thank you very much. Just had to have a crash course in this reassembly, glad for your video! P.s. in my inattention and ignorance during removal, I thought that there was one spring, and that mine had broken - ha!
