- I told this homeowner I'd love to clean up his driveway and walkway completely free of charge. He agreed, so I got him on my schedule for a few days later.
I showed back up and he immediately came out and told me he's uncomfortable with the whole situation. He told me that he went to the police station that morning to make sure that there weren't any complaints on anyone doing free pressure washing around town.
Luckily there weren't any complaints on me and I told him that if he were uncomfortable, I didn't have to do the job. We got talking quite a bit and he let me go ahead and get it cleaned up for him.
He was amazed with the results and he had no idea his driveway was that dirty. I'm really happy I was able to help him out and get everything cleaned up!

Another good video. It would probably be a good idea for this channel as for all the other wonderful landscapers on YT, to register with local law enforcement, explaining the nature of your YT giveaways to unsuspecting homeowners. It may save someone from being at the wrong end of a 12-guage shotgun some day. They may also give you referrals on potential code violations, creating a win-win for the communities.

Which is what explains why you wouldn't be out there knocking on doors and doing good deeds to start with. That requires a certain amount of respect for others and consideration for their feelings and their property. It requires an ability to understand that others have all rights to make decisions regarding themselves and their property and to understand that if that decision is contrary to what YOU want, it's not personal or about you. In other words, Spencer didn't react this way because he's an adult man and conducts himself as one.

Common scam is to tell people it's free then make some excuse for why they have to pay for it after the work is done and the person feels obligated and/or threatened, so they pay.

Like a shoe shine will drop his brush when he sees a tourist walking by, and if they pick it up and hand it to him he'll offer them a free shine. After he's done, and demands payment, if the person refuses he'll start causing a scene so the tourist feels obligated to pay so as not to escalate the situation.
@@MrCaptainTea online, I'd compare it to those sites that offer a free shipment of cosmetics to "sample" saying there's no risk, just enter your credit card info. In the very fine print it'll tell them that they'll be charged hundreds of dollars monthly if they agree, and since it's mostly seniors that fall for that they're less likely to notice it on their statements, if they even check them at all. Had to deal with it all the time when I would process those claims for the bank, but even though technically they agreed to the terms we'd just chargeback the money from the "company" that scammed them, which in the long run will generally put them out of business. Felt good.

Tbh this is great to hear. Too often elderly people are scammed because of their naivety so it's refreshing to see someone take appropriate steps to protect themselves.
Exactly, not just elderly but it best for anyone to be better safe than sorry. The fact that he only went as far as to stay safe and not like some who immediately become aggressive due to simply being skeptical is nice to see.
I was really impressed by the homeowner's thoroughness in checking Spencer out. Spencer not being even slightly bothered by it made the situation 1000 times better. High five both of them!!
It's a hope for good and a trust in people in a world that is sad and broken.
If they get scammed it's usually over the phone and they give their bank account or credit card details to some random person on the phone, or they straight up send money via Western Union or some such.

I think it's better to see an overly cautious elderly person than an overly trusting one. I see it happen too often where they get taken advantage of. At least we know this gentleman is taking precautions!

@@johnqdoe yeah and he has to pay for that expensive equipment, maintenance, gas, transportation, and all other working expenses, plus his home/car/bills/food. He could have accomplished all that the normal way, but instead he took it to TH-cam so we could pay for all of it without spending a dime, and he could help some people that need it and show that there's still people that do nice things. Ffs man, sometimes he does a 2 day job and hands THEM $300! He is a wonderful guy, and I'm sorry you're such a pessimistic person that you think having people watch videos FOR FREE so he can take care of people's lawns and driveways FOR FREE is a scam. I've never heard anything that ridiculous.

Yes. It's sickening how people prey upon seniors. I get tons of scam calls usually from over seas from people pretending to be Amazon, FBI, IRS and texts from people pretending to be the bank. I'll take the calls and occupy their time just to keep them tied up and unable to do it to someone who might not know better.
I take care of my mother whose pushing 80. The amount of scam calls she gets, scam mail, scam text messages, and scam knocks at the door is incredible. I knew seniors were prey for financial predators but holy shit!

This homeowner will never forget the kindness you paid him and the fact that you refused anything in the end. I'm glad you asked him to pay it forward and I hope he does. Yeah, both sides were actually doing almost perfect in how they responded to the situation.
The house owner went to check to see if any reports had come in or anything like that because people doing something for free is almost exclusively done with something nefarious in mind in some way.
Meanwhile someone like Spencer should actually expect this behavior instead of getting offended by it. Sad as it is, it is the actual good people that are in the minority, and the ones actually getting offended use emotions as a way to shake up their victims to get what they want (if they got something nefarious in mind).
All in all, a very good action and response by both sides here in this screwed up world of ours.
Lots of people do things for free without any malicious intent. Shitty people exist to test your faith in humanity. Thus the solution is trust, but verify. Give people the benefit of the doubt, but don't commit to anything beyond what is polite and expected of civilized society-unless you have evidence or reason to not doubt their good intentions.
I'm sixty six now Spence .and just a worn out body from concrete life . Watching you touches my heart . I know how it feels to put a lot of hard work into something and be able to stand back and be proud . Please take every precautions of lifting and bending while you're young . It isn’t necessarily that there are more od them, but rather that the internet has provided the, with a more efficient means of scamming.

The fact you reassure that this isn't a scam and then tell them to check out the final results at the end AND always denying any money, saying to pass it on someone else instead... instant subbed. It's such a good act of kindness that you do. A clean driveway may not be life-changing but your attitude is.

It’s fascinating isn’t it?
So often in our lives, we can be oblivious to our own problems, not even acknowledging a problem exists.
It sometimes takes a caring person to open our eyes to something we ourselves do not see. What’s important is, that we are open to constructive criticism from others.
It’s often too easy to think they’re being judgmental or mean, when all too often, it’s actually an outreach of love extended because they CARE about us.
It’s sad when people falsely perceive love as anything to the contrary just because we don’t initially like what we hear.
I understand this individual might have been reserved with skepticism because how many people offer such a service for FREE? This said, we need to open ourselves up to receiving love when it’s offered, still of course being cautious of the reality there are indeed scammers, but when someone explains in detail why they’re offering something for FREE, that there’s truly no strings attached, I find it overreacting to call the cops.
This said, it’s such a joy that the homeowner was finally able to recognize the truth. It’s amazing what LOVE can do when it’s shared!

dirt accumulated a little bit everyday over time, you won't notice the massive differences, just like how you won't see the grow of the people that you see everyday, but you can tell the grow of friends who you haven't seem for a few years in an instant.

I never blame people for being skeptical. There's a lot of scammers and fraud nowadays, those kinds of crime are on the rise.

@@kiriakoz I was surprised when I called into a browser tech support. They not only didn't fix the issue that I was having, but then also tried to charge me after the fact when I never agreed to any arrangement of the sort in the first place.
It makes me wonder how many people get duped by those types of scams that seem reasonable at first glance.

@@jonascazares153 not all the time once the work is done he could demand money at a higher rate than what it would cost. He could threaten to get cops and legal involved as well since there's no proof that the customer has that said he'll do it for free.

@johnqdoe nobody has been scammed. If you have watched his videos, SB is very transparent, and he let's us know that he is able to bless others because is gets compensated by TH-cam. I don't know what Patreon is, but it doesn't matter. If he's being paid, he is paying it forward. I just don't understand your point. At any rate, you be blessed!!!
@@sherrycanada892 His point is that it's not as altruistic as it seems, since he's not doing it for "free", he does get paid, just not by the person he's doing it for. And many people don't see that part, just the surface level of the video (where he offers to do it for free) and assume it's entirely selfless. Although johnqdoe is being incredibly cynical about it, for some reason, as It's far from a scam.
Also just an FYI for you, Patreon is an online company that allows people to crowd fund people. For example, you give him 5 bucks a month to support his content, and you'll get a little bonus in return (I dunno about him specifically, but a lot of people have behind the scenes videos non-patreon pledgers don't have access to, putting their name in the credits of videos, etc.)

If subscribing to the channel gets him paid, so be it. I stand by my original statement. He could, in all honesty just keep the money for himself and ride by and ignore these homes that take away from the beauty of the area. There are always going to be naysayers on any situation. Obviously today in 2023, too many scammers passes by and ring at your door to offer you this and that and most of the times you get scammed and loose a ton of money to these people. Reticence would mean he hid his thoughts, which he did not do, at all.
He was actually very clear about being afraid of a hidden catch and we respect him for it.

It did initially only have the meaning of being uncommunicative/silent, but over time it evolved to being reluctant. Just as all words do, they evolve. Reticent, though, even after many years of the word evolving, is still a pet peeve to some people. Language is ever-growing and that’s the beauty of it. 😊

I love how you can see what needs to be done so easily and are polite about it. The skepticism makes sense, especially in tougher neighborhoods, suburbs off of large cities, etc. We lived in a nice little neighborhood near a very large metropolis for a long time, and you wouldn't believe some of the hijinks people would get up to, including but not limited to people looking in windows of our house, rv, car in all kinds of different ways.

Free is a word that brings up much hesitation because there's usually someone looking to scam you. I have a business and give my clients great deals on tech and I throw in a lot of freebies. I have to explain why it's free and how I'm able to do it or they get very suspicious lol. Rightfully so.

As a senior myself, let me say first that you are trustworthy and are doing a great thing. 👍 because you film yourself there is a record of your past yards as well as this yard to cover yourself... but you might be surprised at how many scam artist come into a neighborhood to check out what a senior might have to steal and how able the senior might be able to defend their self. In my Texas neighborhood, it is well known that most of our seniors are armed, so we don't have any issues.
You're a good man, Spencer. I can't blame him for being skeptical, there are a lot of scams that people (especially seniors) fall victim to. You're doing great things and I am so happy for all of your success.
The transformation is remarkable. This is a true win-win situation. The perpetrator shows his skills, equipment and the quality of the results, while the home owner gets a huge improvement to the look of his property. Can't fault his motivation here in any way.

Obviously SB had the intention of uploading the vid before he even made it, and told the guy he was doing the "favor" for that at the beginning so I see no issue with this as long as SB or others dont try to act like he did this with no intention of getting anything from it.

this really moved me because the fact that the owner just couldnt understand why a stranger would do something so nice for him along with his reaction at the end i feel like it kindof restored his faith in humanity a little bit this experience is something hes really going to remember and process and may even inspire him to help a stranger too doing these transformations is more than just cleaning a yard it has a bigger impact. i also just think this is great way to use a youtube platform making a channel than ultimately gives back to the community. i hope to see more content like this on youtube. thank you for doing what you do.
The issue is he comes from a time when people were kind as this (and still are in rural areas). In recent years elders have learned to distrust and rightly so.

Well, he didn't charge the homeowner, but it benefits both Spencer and homeowner. Homeowner gets free service, Spencer gets ad revenue.
You know, you performed a much greater service then just cleaning off the man's sidewalk and driveway, and that was pretty fantastic In and of itself. But you also showed this man that there are kind of people in this world who aren't looking to somehow get something for what they do, but genuinely want to help people.❤
It is indeed very kind of him. However, he is definitely getting “something” for what he does. He definitely gets money per house that he does in the form of revenue from TH-cam. Looking at a the number of views he gets from this channel and his Lawn Mower channel, which is in the millions, he is probably a millionaire by now. However, there is nothing wrong with that as he has earned every penny and deserves it for all of the hard work he does. I love that he helps people out AND gets compensated for it.

Not only was this amazing to watch as a skilled worker and transformation. I live the fact that he went to the 5-0 out of precaution and you were cool and he let it go. I'm at 15:50 so far so I haven't seen the end but hes going to be soooo happy with the work. Not only that but the world is scary for the older generation.
