Why are people saying they disagree with the picks? It's the panelists personal takes. It's not up for debate. Makes no sense to try and tell people they're wrong about the things they like or dislike.

I think it's called engagement. Yes, SoT is fun but it is also a collective of highly knowledgeable people who could hold their own with any other rock journalists. Pete has done an amazing job building various teams that enhance his own substantive knowledge but also have a lot of fun, and radiate that fun onto the audience.
As for disagreeing with the panelists, a) they disagree with each other, and b) we will either agree or disagree with them whether we say so or not. Allowing us to comment builds engagement with us, the audience, which is presumably one of Pete's goals.
The panelists have their more expert views; we have our considerably less expert views - isn't it fun to have as many views out there as possible? Several-way communication is generally better than two-way communication, which is nearly always more engaging than one-way communication.

The first episode is a TH-cam classic and I feel that this edition could very well top that especially when it comes to George's brutal honesty and his take no prisoners approach on iconic albums, its always a treat to listen to mainly because you don't expect it. It's going to be epic and judging by everyone's reactions in the thumbnail, I'm guessing George is burying a very popular album 😅 I won't guess what it is as I want to be surprised but I know it's going to be very entertaining. I can't wait!

Hello, guys! Happy 100th episode. Thank you for 90 min. of endless entertainment. I love good adult humor. And, to show my appreciation, I'll share w/you the moment that gave me more than a chuckle:
    1. Jon Anderson is the AC/DC of prog 🤣🤣 (This got me thinking. I like Dirty Deeds. Then, I heard TNT and thought this is cool too. Wait, aren't they the same song?!)
    2. Endless River, endless hate 😢😢😂😂
    3. If an enema had a voice 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    4. To be prog rock, it needs to rock somewhere 🤣🤣
    5. Hearing Luis defend Kilroy Was Here 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    6. Dennis DeYoung is the Bryan Ferry of America 😂😂(I hear you!!)
    7. Bryan Ferry is the enema for me 😂😂😂😂
    8. Steve Hackett, great guitar player but don't sing or play harmonica 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    9. Steve Howe is worse 😂😂
    10. Sounds like bad Supertramp and Supertramp is pretty bad 😂😂 😂😂
    11. Mr. Roboto is catchy - So is chlamydia 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    12. Mexican James Brown 😎😎 (That I have to see!)
    13. Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery. Is that pretentious enough for you? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    14. Euphoria, should've been called euthanize 😂😂
    15. Luis, why do you keep listening to Yes and Jon Anderson? Steven, why do you keep listening to Pink Floyd? Guys, stop torturing yourselves!!!

    Definitely agree with:
    - Pink Floyd - The Endless River
    - Yes - Heaven & Earth
    - Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
    - Steven Wilson - Future Bites (not that terrible, but quite a drop comparing with To The Bone)
I don't necessarily hate, but I'm unsure about:
    - Aphrodite's Child - 666
    - Gong - You
    - Pavlov's Dog - Pampered Menial
    - The Mars Volta - Francis The Mute
    - Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans
    - Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
    Disagree with:
    - Pain of Salvation - BE (that's actually one of my faves of 21st century, but definitely a polarizing album)
    - Magma - Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh
    - Big Big Train - English Electric, Pt. 1 (again, one of my faves of recent decades)
    - Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (it's not brilliant, but I admire it)
    - Atheist - Unquestionable Presence (c'mon George, it's not garbage, it's brilliant)
    - LTE - LTE1
My picks, that weren't mentioned (and I don't remember what was mentioned in the part 1, so it might repeat):
    - Gentle Giant - Giant For A Day
    - Yes - Union
    - Dream Theater - The Astonishing
    - Camel - I Can See Your House From Here
    - ELP - In The Hot Seat
    - Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (yeah, I'm hiring a bodyguard now)

Rarely does the sequel exceed the original. This one holds its own and is at least as epic as the original thanks to the brutal honesty of everyone speaking to their individual likes and dislikes. It brings the phrase 'sonic nap' to my lexicon - special thanks to George for that - and will never again hear the word enema without Luis' statement about an enema voice. Epic enjoyment, great fun, and always great to hear what people don't like in addition to the albums they love. Thanks to everyone involved for taking the time and digging up 5 more albums to eviscerate to the joy and agony of the other co-captains and all us watching! Great, great stuff here.

4 Grand Funk Railroad - Closer to Home (1970)
This is a very personal pick for me. I’m not denying that their are greater albums than this one. But favorite means just that. We were playing On Time and the Red Album during the summer of ‘70 when this third album was released. It seemed a bit more sophisticated and less raw, but still cranked out great rock and roll music !
A light acoustic guitar strummed and then a fuzz laden electric guitar came booming out with “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother”. This is a fantastic start. One of Mark Farner’s best written songs. And he composed them all for this album.
“Aimless Lady” is a fine uptempo rocker. The rhythm section of Mel Schacher on bass and Don Brewer on drums compliments Marks great guitar sound on this short ditty.
“Nothing is the Same” is a reworking of a song that appeared in a rawer form on the previous albums extra tracks. The story of growing up is juxtaposed to a killer riff laden classic !
“Mean Mistreater” is a solemn song that has never been a good listen. Its just a dirge that’s hard to stick with.
“Get It Together” and “Hooked on Love” are two tunes that go together even though they are separated by another song. These two tunes are so similar in groove. They show a real maturity in songwriting by Mark Farner. I guess you could even call them stylishly advanced for a bunch of crude rock and rollers !
“I Don’t Have to Sing the Blues” is the song between; and it’s the second best song on the record. It’s one of GFR ‘s best ever songs! It rocks the blues as best as this band could do !
The greatest song on the album is the most well known tune by the band. Of course I’m talking about “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home). This song is a real gem. It’s a fine rocker with great lyrics and a middle section that is incredibly beautiful. The chorus may remind you of another great song “Hey Jude” with its repeated lines. But this is Grand Funk Railroad’s greatest achievement by far. There are sounds of waves and gulls and orchestra parts such as violins and cellos to carry the song out. Mark Farner wanted to write a meaningful song. It came at a time of a raging war in Vietnam. And a Captain losing his ship could be an allegory of the eventual loss of the war. (That’s just my interpretation).
It’s a cool song with some fine instrumentation from the band !
The bonus songs on the album have good live cuts. And there is a version of “Mean Mistreater” with an organ instead of piano that I like a little better.
No telling how many times I’ve heard this album; but it remains in my rotation to this day. I mean how could I not pick it? It’s only been with me for 53 years !!

Dear chaps, there is little or no point in saying you are wrong, this is actually great because I like it.
However, I would just like to “modify” something that Pete mentioned about Robert Calvert. There is no point in me telling you why Hawklords was a good album. If you do not like it, you do not like it.
Robert Calvert was primarily a lyricist. I checked it and I believe that he only wrote music for one of the tracks on the album. Robert Calvert was a poet and personally I believe that he wrote some very literary and memorable lyrics.
I saw Hawkwind on the “Quark Strangeness and Charm” and the “Hawklords” tours, and he was not only a great lyricist and singer but he was a great front man. I know that Hawkwind is Dave Brock’s band, however, I have always felt that he felt more comfortable in the shadows at the edge of the stage.
I know that Robert Calvert had his problems, I know that he had several difficulties, however I would propose that if you do not like this album, he may not be the sole reason.
I have been a Hawkwind fan all of my life and as folks know, they do not have one sound. They have evolved over the years. Some phases may be more appealing than others. Here is my personal feeling based on nothing what so ever. Hawkwind often reflect a drug of choice of a culture at different points in time. The culture changes, the audience changes, the personnel changes and therefore the music changes.
I feel that “Quark, Strangeness and Charm”, “25 Years On”, “PXR5” and “Live 79” are great albums from (personally) a very happy time.
If others do not like them……
    Keep up the good work.

Congrats on reaching the 100th milestone.
TA''s The Whirlwind is a stone cold classic. Had to see that tour twice.
Luis needs to revisit Tales & listen to the Remembering. The interplay between Howe & Wakeman in the instrumental section is the best they ever did. If that isn't rocking out I dont know what is.
The Neal Morse Band have been the most consistent prog band since their formation. Every release a classic.
Have never been able to get into Gong but love solo Steve Hillage. Magma are unlistenable.
Surprised The Lamb wasnt mentioned but I guess at least 1/3 of it is good.

Now that I listened to Pavlov's Dog's Theme From Subway Sue I will never say anything bad about Geddy Lee's vocals in the 70s anymore. Are you absolutely sure that's a male singer?
Apart from the vocals, there’s nothing wrong with that track.

    • @mclarsj
      @mclarsj ปีที่แล้ว

I actually like Pavlov's Dog... (they come from Missouri I guess, but sound more European than most american bands) Pampered Menial is like some medieval proggy rock with songs ( the songs are there!) with an excellent violin on top of it...( "Julia" is a masterpiece, so is "Late November ") but yeah..the vocals from David Surkamp is a matter of an acquired taste I guess...it is high pitched but definitely unique...I like David's vocals more than for instance Jon Andersons...

I usually agree with Steven Reid's tastes in music and on a whim checked out Mostly Autumn sine the other panelists were surprised he didn't like it. I didn't find the sound as heinous as he did. I couldn't agree with Pete more! I am a massive Zappa fanatic! He is my #1 g-to musician/composer. If I had to choose only 1 artist to take to a desert island, Frank would be it. An album for every mood. But when people that know me ask me about Frank's albums, I always tell them to stay away from the 'Volman & Kaylan' years. I can easily do without "Just Another Band From L.A.", "Fillmore 1971" and "200 Motels". Just can't get into them at all, and all for the same reasons that Pete stated. Conversely, I've been a huge Turtle's fan since I was a kid. Doesn't matter. This period (a favorite to some) is, in my humble opinion, Zappa's worst output... regardless if the lyrics are funny or not. Ironically, his next 6 releases are all stellar and among my all-time favorites from his immense catalog!! Pete, you're the first person that I've heard admit this, and I'm thrilled to not be alone in my posture of that album. I have it on original vinyl, and 2 different remastered CD's, but I never listen to it, or the other two for that matter!!

Steve Hackett's singing has improved over the years. Now you can actually like and bear what he does (I prefer him over Nad Sylvan, tbh), and that started with his comeback period which started imo with Guitar Noir. GN has Cassandra, though. It's a 50/50 album, half anchored in his desires of making another GTR album and half with these new ideas and great playing he was starting to come up with, and that second half is really majestic. I recommend the Israeli pressing that has the songs separated in style which was a great idea.
Dark Town would be his next and it's a more cohesive album. Everything's been uphill from there with Hackett.
As for Roxy Music, I love Avalon, lol. It's their best. I don't care much for the 70s stuff, it's too whimsical, and Bryan Ferry's voice was not there yet. He became a good crooner, and his solo work after Avalon has been consistently good.
Mars Volta debut is a classic, but they ran out of ideas very quickly. Frances the Mute has some good moments but that initial spark of genius was gone.
Maybe they have some latter albums that are listenable, I don't know.
    Edit.
I'm with Luis, Tales From Topographic Oceans was terrible. The Wakeman tune is nice but that's all.
