  • After 2 years and over 10,000 miles, I thought it about time to do a review of my 2017 BMW S1000R Sport. I've been limited to UK tours over the last year or two, so it's been down to the SW, over to Wales an up to Scotland a couple of times. Find out about the good bits and the... not so good bits!

    Loved my 2018 xr . Thinking of keeping it and extending my warranty

    it is one of the best that have come out on the market ... some small issues that they have come up with, it is worthless. the driving behavior of the s1000xr, no one else has it!! you feel absolute confidence, and you have to be irrelevant to fall in!! the power it has is from another planet... especially euro 3-4 gen1 is a cannibal... gen 2 is calmer... no relation... if you want raw power and adrenaline, you get gen 1 euro 3)! ! the ultimate driving machine...

    I'm due to pick up one of these tomorrow. At 6'6" (about 2m) I need something with a little more room. I currently have a kawasaki z1000 and the body position just isn't comfortable anymore. Plus the Xr is a nice step up and the price was right.

    Good review, I have the 22 model and other than for a cutting out in the wet problem it's been great. If they can sort that problem out then I won't be handing it back

    Great review. Can you describe the front end feel a bit more. I come from a sportsbike and thinking about getting myself a S1000XR, but I do not want a numb and floaty feeing front end. I have experienced this in the Yamaha tracer and MT’s and it is a real dealbreaker for me.

      You get some feel, but nothing like a weight on wrists sportsbike. I don’t think it’s an XR specific thing, just an aspect of the more upright riding position, I guess as you’ve already experienced on the Tracer. Thinking about riding in the wet with reduced grip, I’d say it’s more like you get a feel for grip level from the both the front and the back through both your wrists but also your butt as you accelerate, particularly out of corners when you’re still carrying a bit of lean and the contact patch is reduced. As well as getting feel during straight line braking and acceleration like on any bike. Get yourself a test ride - ideally in the wet if you can I’d say.

    Hey, I am planning to get one this week… 2016 are selling for $11k and 2020 is for $15k…. I had s1kRR for last 4 years… is it worth paying extra 4 grand for newer model ?

    • @thebearfacedbiker
      @thebearfacedbiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on mileages I guess. I had a 2018 with down blipper, not sure if 2016 has that? Wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me, more of a nice to have. I always tend to buy newest and lowest mileage I can afford, but just for longevity really…

    My bmw R1200GS was badly damaged & I need another bike before my trip to the alps in July. I’ve narrowed it down to a 2017 KTM Superduke GT & a 2017 S1000XR, in your opinion which is the better bike in terms of practicality & build quality? I currently own a KTM Superduke R 990 so familiar with KTM as much as BMW. Thanks

    • @thebearfacedbiker
      @thebearfacedbiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d say practicality wise they’re very similar. If you get OEM panniers, the XR ones are quite a bit bigger than those for the GT. The GT is lower than the XR so slightly easier to paddle around and in mountains. I have far greater trust in BM build quality and reliability, and some agree and some don’t. All a bit luck of the draw on that front. What I can say having done big trips on a GT and an XR is that if I had both sat in the garage, with a big trip ahead of me, I’d choose the XR every day of the week. But each to their own and a lot probably depends on whether you want an inline 4 or twin thumper experience of a trip…

    Hi,
    What is the pump you have in this s1000xr?

    • @thebearfacedbiker

      It’s this - pricey, but good and compact:
      Rocky-Creek Designs MotoPressor Pocket Pump (CE Approved) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08P8TD4N8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PXHFCPW5M7CTAJV64V26?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

    I have a tracer 900 with cruise - does the BMW's work the same way? Cancels if you shift, roll throttle forward?

    • @thebearfacedbiker
      @thebearfacedbiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s alright and works well when you get used to it. All main stuff is on buttons and not buried in menus which I find good. 👍

    how tall are you? do you find seat height too high for what it is? i'm 5'7 and there was no way i could reach bottom eith my heals...

    • @thebearfacedbiker
      @thebearfacedbiker  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      About 5’10 and I found it OK. Tbh if I got another, I would get a low version to get a lower centre of gravity - but with same height seat to keep the peg to butt distance the same.

    • @jurepecnik9054
      @jurepecnik9054 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thebearfacedbiker the pegs are ok on an XR, but the whole height of the bike is just a bit too much... i understand that it has to do Adventure like ride as well, but lets be honest, who takes a bike like that on a gravel or in the forest? Maybe the next step for BMW is to make a touring version of the S1000R (like a R1250RS with a straight 4 cylinder) with taller screen and integrated pannier holders, like super duke GT or ninja 1000 SX... maybe even shaft drive, so there wouldn't be any chain maintainance required... :D :D :D
      I'm day dreaming, i know, hahhahahaha xD

    • @thebearfacedbiker
      @thebearfacedbiker  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea I think they only styled it like that to attract people who wanted a 4 cylinder GS. And it’s very good, just pointlessly high as you say. I reckon the low version XR would be a good compromise - if not a better bike!

    The worst motorcycle I have ever had (XR 2017 euro 5, I bought a new one and sold it with 30,000km). Totally unreliable. The faults were as follows: at 2000 km the seals of the front forks began to leak. At 6000 km the camshaft was replaced. Of course the motorcycle broke down 2000 km from home. At 10,000 km the gague cluster was replaced, at 15,000 a water pump leaked. Every time it was a warm day the engine did not want to start after a long drive (this malfunction the service failed to repair). The positive side is that the BMW service repaired everything completely free of charge and in a short time. Two friends had exactly the same problems with their motorcycles. I hope you are more lucky with your motorcycles 🙂

      Oh mate, bad times. You were very unlucky with that one. Still, at least your dealer were OK. Another big difference vs the likes of KTM - with which I did have problems and the dealer was about as much use as a chocolate teapot!
