A crazy October 4 day tour up to the Isle of Mull for a bit of wild camping. Taking in Tobermory and a few ferries on our route, we swing back round to Glancoe, the borders area near Moffat then cross the Yorkshire Dales on our way home. Superb!

3 months, no trickle charger... will lithium start the S1000?

3 months, no trickle charger... will lithium start the S1000?
Strange error messages, either get a new battery or keep it on a trickle charger when not riding it. Don't use a lithium battery. These bikes are super finicky about the voltage. The suspension is one of the best parts of this bike at least on mine. I think my 2017 GT would run circles around the 2018 GS I rode to Alaska. I had my knee down on my first ride of the GT within 5 miles of canyon riding, that's not happening on the GS (I was pulling into Anchorage when I finally felt that comfort level).. . . . I had to replace a fork seal at about 12k miles but it was because I was using a zip tie to check my travel. I switched to SKF low friction seals and went with 5 weight oil. These electronic forks were the easiest to service out of any bike I have ever serviced. They were very simple inside to my surprise. . . . 6th gear issue I agree. Some people drop a tooth off the countershaft but I will just live with it and use the gear the bike wants. . . . Cruise control gripe, I also agree. I usually don't ride in a group or if I do the GT just goes first and we pace off it. All cruise control responds different so unless all your mates are on the same bike and you are the odd one out that's the only time it becomes an actual problem. . . . The only other gripe I have that you missed is the quick shifter. It should be called "shift assist" or something different because it responds as slow as if you let the gas off, pulled the clutch lever in, shifted and ease the lever and gas back on. If you have a pillion you will bump helmets. I can shift quicker manually (and that's what I end up doing on this bike just like every other bike I ride so its not a show stopper for me). Newer gen quick shifters work a lot better. The one on the new 990 is absolutely perfect at all speeds. Its even better than the new Yamaha MT09SP. . . . . and ABS but I just hate ABS in general, never seen a bike that had it right yet (I am going to replumb the brake lines direct pretty soon to take care of that issue). . . . I think a GS and a GT are kind of apples and oranges (since the GT is not going off road ). The GT is way lighter by like 75+ lbs and handles way better and has like 50 more HP and gets about the same gas mileage but if the type of riding you do fits the GS better get the GS . . (edited) OH I see you got the XR not the GS. OK that is apples to apples. Quick shifter is definitely better. But the XR is still 60+ lbs heavier! The BMW chassis is probably better at higher speeds (track use), but chucking it around the street and powering out off corners (KTM 106 ft lbs vs XR 84ft lbs) , the KTM is still going to eat it for lunch (if the ABS doesn't rear its ugly head). Hope you got the M1000XR then you stand a chance.
i don t want to be mean... but 10.000 miles in 4 years?... i do 20.000 in one year....
How’s your Camera? Did it recover from the rain.. ?
No, need to claim on the GoPro cover. To be fair in quite a few years of abuse of several cameras, it’s the first failure I’ve had.
So there is a Ferry from Groningen to Kristiansand now ??? Next year I want to ride From Belgium to Norway ,and then touring through Western Norway, So it would be great having a Ferry in Groningen instead of having to ride all the way to Hirtshals (Denmark)
There was… I think we caught the second year of it running, but it’s gone bust. So back to having to go up to Hirtshals 😩
@@thebearfacedbiker Too bad. Because that would have been about 800 km (490 miles ) closer and alot less exhausting You think the one from Emden (Germany) is stil active ?
@Toxicdemon2 Indeed - same for us coming from UK. No, the Groningen one moved to Emden and was the same operator that then went bust 😢
@@thebearfacedbiker well damn... I guess I'll have to ride up to Hirtshals then. Because I am absolutley going next year.
Totally worth it, you won’t regret it!
Hard to find a better place for a motorbike ride.😊
Sure is!
I am thinking about buying one , thanks for the review
Holidays do go quick when your having fun. That is why this year, I had planned a 6 week tour of the EU.
Nice 👌 Enjoy!
@@thebearfacedbiker Albeit you do meet the odd biker camping on the same site, most times not. It can get lonely travelling solo, especially in the evenings.
Spot on regarding the analogue speedo I tend to set the style to the ‘ touring style which has the digital speedo but no rpm . What were they thinking at BMW it’s very frustrating . I see they’ve corrected that on the 1250 .
did you say Knob Hill?
Yes mate. Not toooo bad this time of year, but well rutted in places. Pure hell in winter 😂
Where in Rutland is this?
Actually most of these lanes are SW of Uppingham on the boundary of Rutland. There are a fair few further to the East as well around Oundle and south and to the SE of Peterborough if you’re exploring this area and putting routes together. TRF map shows them all.
I love the mountain scenery. I want to ride that run on my ZX7R. Your truely lucky.
Can you upload the general itinerary and general cost of the trip please?
❤thank you for this trip which makes me really want to visit Norway
👍 You won’t regret it!
9/10 for such a graceful dismount, lol.
He styled it out impressively didn’t he!! 😀
Excellent video, really enjoyed that, well done guys. Where did you get the ferry from in Germany to Norway?
From Emden - but unfortunately Holland Norway lines have gone bust so it is no more. Only route now is from Hamburg or Hirtshals.
Cheers bloke, this is the vid that helped me decide my tyre choice this time around.👍
You won’t look back mate - night and day difference in the wet and cold weather 👍
Looking good 👍 once I've worn out the IRCs I'll be buying a set of these. How is the speedometer accuracy now rear is a bit talller?
Hard to say as I don’t have a satnav with speedo, will have to get an app. But I wouldn’t have known the difference, in gearing either - feels the same.
I thought how come no comments, have some algorithm
Cheers Dude 👍
Interesting take. Lots of absolutely glowing reviews out there as well. Bad luck buying a bike unsuited to your style and that turned out a lemon as well. Seems KTM and BMW fans are like oil and water. Hope your BMW has served you well.
It has. And the dealer service is night and day better!
Interesting but very subjective complaints. It sounds like you’re used to another manufacturer but expected the KTM to be the same or not too different. Some people just can’t ride or get on with certain marques. KTMs are not for you clearly. I find the ones that don’t like KTMs the most are BMW riders. It’s the same the other way round for me actually. I have had 7 KTMs and 2 BMWs. Both BMWs were dull and had worse reliability than any KTM I’ve had.
Yea horses for courses. Dealers slightly aside, I never had any real problems with Triumph or Honda tho… the suspension and dealer support was the final nail in the coffin for me tbh, I wasnt prepared to spend any more of my time on it or them!
I think you have the best recordings I have seen
Thanks mate 🙏 😀 Please like and subscribe!
Hi, which month was this tour and how was the temperature at snowed areas?
Hi, this was June and last year there was a heatwave - 30 degrees sometimes which is unusual. In the snow at higher ground it was still warm, 15-20 degrees. You just have to be lucky!
Thanks a lot, we planned for this June almost same times keep fingers cross
Have a great trip! Norway is so epic ❤️enjoy!
@@thebearfacedbiker thanks mate
Hey can you tell us your suspension settings for sag? I can’t seem to get mine dialed in, it’s pretty unruly in corners, wallowing about and head shakes at higher speeds. Anything to help, ❤❤
I adjust according to the manual - get my wife to measure the sag while I sit on it and adjust to spec. Sounds like you need to increase the pre-load, which is about all you can do on these… I’ve only ever had a bit of wallowing loaded up with suspension set too soft…
Where's the dirt bike does dirt bike horse encounter I don't see a dirt bike
I’m sitting on it - and have turned it off.
Much respect for that! You're a class act my friend. The bike is spectacular too 👌 😊
How much was that ferry crossing to Norway?
650 Euros return. Obviously too cheap as they’ve gone bust 😢 You now have to ride to the top of Denmark or go across to Kiel to get an Oslo ferry. Either take a fair bit longer!
The XR is Fab
Great movie..As a norwegian i'm proud of this scenery. Glad you guys enjoyed it...😊🇳🇴
Oh wow, thank you 😊
No matter how the day has progressed even if Im running late I always do the 16 mile detour brilliant road nice video
how tall are you? do you find seat height too high for what it is? i'm 5'7 and there was no way i could reach bottom eith my heals...
About 5’10 and I found it OK. Tbh if I got another, I would get a low version to get a lower centre of gravity - but with same height seat to keep the peg to butt distance the same.
@@thebearfacedbiker the pegs are ok on an XR, but the whole height of the bike is just a bit too much... i understand that it has to do Adventure like ride as well, but lets be honest, who takes a bike like that on a gravel or in the forest? Maybe the next step for BMW is to make a touring version of the S1000R (like a R1250RS with a straight 4 cylinder) with taller screen and integrated pannier holders, like super duke GT or ninja 1000 SX... maybe even shaft drive, so there wouldn't be any chain maintainance required... :D :D :D I'm day dreaming, i know, hahhahahaha xD
Yea I think they only styled it like that to attract people who wanted a 4 cylinder GS. And it’s very good, just pointlessly high as you say. I reckon the low version XR would be a good compromise - if not a better bike!
After 4 trips from uk to Norway on 3 different R1200 boxers ( No GS version ) seeing many of your roads and tourist 'must see' I leave for home each time knowing I have again missed so much more that needs adding to a 'next visit list'. Laerdal tunnel and the top route overpass always needs another trip, the ferry to Lote, Fv698 to Solberg Panorama view route is worth the time from Forde and Stryn, thanks for posting and making trip 5 a possibility.
Thank mate! 😀 Was only my second time and first time on a bike. Will definitely be back!
Have you still got the gpx files for this trip ? If so I’ll love to have them from you if you don’t mind
I’ve had mine 3 years don’t have any issues riding it at all sounds like I you should of bought a GS in the first place KTM is a riders bike
I still find it baffling that the newcastle to Norway ferry was stopped as not being profitable
Sad isn’t it. And all the ones to Germany! And the one we took from Germany went bust, so it’s back to having to ride all the way up through Denmark to get one to Kristiansand. So from hook of Holland, basically two days of flat riding to get there… still worth it mind! 😀
@@thebearfacedbiker Rumours of a Newcastle/Hull to Norway ferry starting in 2025 .... Here's hoping
That would be amazing!
looks great im going in july can't wait was loverly to watch
Enjoy mate, it’s epic! 😀👍
Very nice video
Travel times?
Great but give us a look at the digs 😊
Fair play, next time, but they’re nothing to write home about! 😂
Great movie of Norway trip.
Thanks mate. Positive comments make all the editing time worthwhile!
And the editing did the movie fantastic. I have traveled with my Harley on many of your places so it was nice to see. I do not film I do only take pictures.
Anyone counted how many times he said Nice? 😂
Nice! 👌
As I watch movies about Norway, because I am planning my trip, I see a lot of them. But this is one of the best!!!
Wow, thank you so much. Have a great trip, Norway is fantastic!
Do you have a map of your route? Love the paradors
hi may i know which ferry company u travel from eemshaven to kristiansand?we r coming on june 2024!need yr advice tqvm
It was Holland-Norway Lines but I think they went out of business last year. Riding up through Denmark to Hirtshals may now be your only option…
mates tqvm for yr good infor tq@@thebearfacedbiker
Good video. What time of the year you did that trip? (dates) thanks
Cheers🍻 Middle two weeks of June. We were proper lucky with a heatwave!
What do you need to fly a drone in Norway?
You need to register with their aviation authority which was easy enough online and gives an operator ID to put on the drone. I think you had to confirm that you have insurance too, then follow their flight restriction zones/maps which are all online. Search on TH-cam - there’s a vid that goes through the Norwegian rules and where you can find the restriction maps and stuff. All pretty straightforward for drone under 250g
Thank you 🙏
Rad! Ugh, I miss adventure riding.
YIKES!!!
it is one of the best that have come out on the market ... some small issues that they have come up with, it is worthless. the driving behavior of the s1000xr, no one else has it!! you feel absolute confidence, and you have to be irrelevant to fall in!! the power it has is from another planet... especially euro 3-4 gen1 is a cannibal... gen 2 is calmer... no relation... if you want raw power and adrenaline, you get gen 1 euro 3)! ! the ultimate driving machine...
Suspensions??? My GT 2019 is superb!!
The 2017 was not. And my dealer didn’t seem to know anything about software upgrades to sort it (despite the info being all over the forums)!
Just ordered one today.
Hi, I was at the lakeside camp at the same time as you. It rained a little, but otherwise it was great there, I enjoyed it a lot. I just wanted to say hello.😊😊😊
