Let’s take the opportunity now that “I’m Still Here” is gaining attention to inform people outside Brazil about the connection between the former president Jair Bolsonaro and this story. Bolsonaro harbored deep hatred for the real-life Rubens Paiva, a congressman who was brutally tortured and killed during the military dictatorship-a fact Bolsonaro has consistently denied, falsely claiming Paiva wasn’t murdered by the regime. In the film, Fernanda Torres portrays the real-life wife of Rubens Paiva, whose tragic story is intertwined with the horrors of the dictatorship Bolsonaro openly admires. Bolsonaro’s hostility toward Paiva and his family reflects his broader admiration for the military regime that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985. He is a staunch defender of that era and has repeatedly praised its legacy. During a vote to impeach former president Dilma Rousseff-a survivor of the dictatorship's brutal practices-Bolsonaro paid tribute to Alberto Ustra, a military officer notorious for orchestrating torture and deaths during that time. Ustra was directly involved in Rousseff’s torture. Bolsonaro genuinely believes the dictatorship was a “revolution” rather than a dictatorship, aligning himself with its legacy in both rhetoric and ideology.

I am notchi brazilian, but I thinky Fernanda Torres deserves an Oscar for this movie. No, but for real tho, I think Americans in particular would benefit SO much from watching this movie. Especially Liberals, ironically.
@@miooj not sure, but maybe because the dictatorships that were imposed thoughout Latin America were supported, planned and financed by the American government, even through Democrat leadership I believe. Just the effects of American imperialism I guess
@miooj It’s a movie about the right-wing military dictatorship in Brazil, which was installed (with the help of the US as part of their regime change Cold War foreign policy) in the context of a “Red Scare” that wasn’t real.
@@miooj Well the political ideology known as "Liberalism" (which is defended by the democratic party and it's supporters in the USA) is a right wing ideology. It is in it's essence an extremely capitalist economical and social school of thought. The military coup and dictatorship in Brazil (and in many other latin american countries during that time) were directly supported and funded by the US government - this isn't a conspiracy or a secret, it's a widely available information. In fact the US president at the time it all started was Lyndon Johnson, a democrat. I am not from the US (I'm brazilian), but - at least from a far - it seems that a lot of US Americans have a very shallow understanding of certain political concepts. From what I have seen and consumed from the country I feel like a lot of people "confuse" leftist and liberal ideas (which is ironic, because they are, in their core, completely opposing). It kinda boils down to the fact that the US has no concrete (or at least "mainstream") leftist movements or parties. Probably do to the many government efforts of repressing them, especially during the cold war. I mean, do remember that I am a foreigner who is not involved in the US social moviment scene - so the left may be stronger than I think idk. But as a brazilian, the only left leaning US american references I have are Malcolm X and the Black Panthers. To foreigners the majority of the US seems to be quite alienated, even the ones who do try to engage with politics (but are not envolved directly or scholars of it) seem to lack awearness of the meaning and history of political ideologies; movements and of most of the US's foreing actions and policies, to an almost funny (if it wasn't sad) degree. I think it´s kind of what the first comment meant or at least what I interpreted from it :) Idk if you are from the US and I don't mean any of it as an "attack" hahah it's not exactly a criticism either, I do belive that US Americans are purposefully "kept in the dark" and/or not incentivated to be and think politically for a reason. In Brazil it's seen as very bad and selfish to say things like "I'm apolitical" or "I don't do politics", but that seems to be the general attitude in the US and that is, more than anything, terrifying.

It's like Fernanda Torres said, we were living a phase full of energy and creativity in Brazil, in culture, art, education with innovative pedagogical projects and, suddenly, everything was truncated in a frightening way, from which we never recovered, but it is under this reality, and knowing that effervescence is part of us, that we will rebuild ourselves. As it has been said since then, 'down with the dictatorship, torture never again'. We recently went through events that reminded us of those times, when part of the population, the military and politicians did not accept the electoral defeat in 2022. The past is more present than we would like, but 'não passarão'.
The film is already a winner, the Oscar award would be just protocol. In fact, the Oscar is not a parameter of film quality, it is an industry and not art.

About voices, I guess Selton is in the top 3 most recognizable voices of Brasil. And accents... 😂😂😂 Among everything he does, he is a famous voice actor too. He is our Daniel San, he and his brother, and he is our Kusco. Just to name some of his work. So... Selton is a staple here in Brasil. I don't know a person who don't love him... So, at least for me, when I heard he was on the movie, I knew I wouldn't see Rubens Paiva. And that's fine. What we get from Selton when he is on is rich, full of life and detail... And he sells any idea... He does it all, comedy and drama, with the same care. That said... Fernanda... We're used to seeing her with witty funny and intelligent scripts. She has this fast thinking and a way of reacting to stuff on scene that is amusing, cool and soooo relatable. Seeing her in drama reminds us she can be subtle and smooth and still makes us feel something. Amazong actress. This movie is a treat...
I was born in Brazil during those tough, oppressive times-so yeah, I’m older than the democratic Statehood of my country, which is just crazy to think about. Without a doubt, I wish my fellow Americans would find a theater showing this movie. It’s a hard and cruel portrait of our childhoods, giving a stark and real illustration of what it was like to live in a country gripped by the 'enemy within' rhetoric. It hits close to home.
Some acting works are in another level, and the language barrier can be overlaped if you are considering just the acting, and that's why Fernanda Torres deseves all awards this year, but are the voters open to consider this and overlap the language barrier?
15:20 that is just what I thought when I watched the movie, the acting in this film doesn't feel like acting at all, it's really almost a documentary and I love that. Something that really pisses me is that culture of cinema point of view (kinda like mexico beeing yellow) and expositive dialogues (those dialogues that are useless for the people in the movie, that serves just to explain things to the spectators like a child) which this film had none

Loved how they switched Fernanda Torres and Selton Mello name tags.
Obrigade "da Costa"
Sim! 😂😂😂😂
Fernanda Torres delivered probably one of the best performances I've seen in the last decade
Masterpiece of Brazilian cinema
Masterpiece of film history
is crazy to see that even in now days with all the evidences and cases, there is still a bunch of brasilians that chose to not belive that all this history moment happend, is insane
Imagina daqui a 50 anos.
No, my guy. The illusion is that it only happened to deserving criminals. It's not that it didn't happen, but that it worked.
@@pedroeubgwhich somehow makes it even worse
brilliant film, Fernanda Torres KILLS it in a contained performance
Great movie! Fernanda deserves an oscar nomination for that movie
Not just the nomination, she'll take that statue

Not exactly by GP, but by Harvey Weinstein with all the power he had who made sure Shakespeare in Love will get as much Oscars as possible. If you didn't see the film for which Fernanda Montenegro was nominated its called Central do Brasil. In English it's called Central Station.

Fernanda is greater than Oscar... And the Oscar not deserve Fernanda.
Oscar not deserve Fernanda... She is greater than a trophy.
Fernanda Torres (whom I know as Fernandinha, or 'Little Fernanda'; her mother is 'The Fernanda,' or Dona Fernanda-for few Fernandona) is ready to conquer and slay the talk show circuit. She's intellectual, witty, and articulate. She will take America by storm.
we need an extended version of this movie. i need to watch all the cut scenes.
Me too!
A rede globo vai lançar a versão estendida no globo play
What a sense of humor from Fernanda Torres.
Fernanda Torres is so intelligent, funny, and charismatic! I'm glad her sense of humor isn't getting lost in translation.
The two Fernandas and Selton are beloved actors in Brasil, we are so proud of them
This film and the whole team are remarkable. They are amazing. Fernanda is talented and fun
Fernanda's hilarious . Great actress , she deserves the Oscars for her performance in this film.
that was awesome to watch! this film deserves to be recognized all over the world. congrats to walter salles, fernanda torres, selton mello, fernanda montenegro and all the crew! a real piece of art
This movie is a piece of art
20:45 Smart move... não se corta Fernanda Montenegro 🤣🤣🤣
I watched it with my girlfriend at the cinema, it was emotional.
You mean, it was touching - indeed
Assisti com minha ex no cinema também, 1 dia depois de terminarmos, it was VERY emotional.

One of the best interviewer. Great questions!
Best Actress for Fernanda Torres
Best Supporting Actor for Selton Mello
We are so proud of this important and inspiring movie!! 🇧🇷
Great interview by Janelle Riley. Didn't know her, now I'm going to follow her work.
An incredible performance by Fernanda Torres! Brilliant movie!
I am notchi brazilian, but I thinky Fernanda Torres deserves an Oscar for this movie.
No, but for real tho, I think Americans in particular would benefit SO much from watching this movie. Especially Liberals, ironically.
can you explain the last part? why would they benefit? i havent watched it yet
I think your keyboard might be Brazilian 😂
I think it´s kind of what the first comment meant or at least what I interpreted from it :)
Idk if you are from the US and I don't mean any of it as an "attack" hahah it's not exactly a criticism either, I do belive that US Americans are purposefully "kept in the dark" and/or not incentivated to be and think politically for a reason. In Brazil it's seen as very bad and selfish to say things like "I'm apolitical" or "I don't do politics", but that seems to be the general attitude in the US and that is, more than anything, terrifying.
Fernanda is the most funny person, even in english.
Principalmente a filha dele.
I absolutely adore the amount of international recognition this movie is getting.

Fernanda is outstanding, everybody in this movie is great
Best Actress in Leading Role ❤
Watch I'm Still Here!! The film has the ability to show in a sensible and delicate way a dark period of the dictatorial regime imposed at the time.

But seriously, Fernanda and Selton are amazing!

Great interview and amazing movie!
This movie is a treat...
this is such a masterpiece!
Its really nice to see the amount of recognition Fernanda and Selton are having.. Well done!
What an amazing interview! Thank you, guys. ❤
Fernanda will revenge her mom, because the Academy stoled her mom's Oscar.

She's incredible! Love her!
she's amazing !!!!!!
Fernanda e Selton, nossos orgulhos
I was born in Brazil during those tough, oppressive times-so yeah, I’m older than the democratic Statehood of my country, which is just crazy to think about. Without a doubt, I wish my fellow Americans would find a theater showing this movie. It’s a hard and cruel portrait of our childhoods, giving a stark and real illustration of what it was like to live in a country gripped by the 'enemy within' rhetoric. It hits close to home.
Gostei do ingles do Selton. Aguardando esse filme.
Fantastic movie!!
We love Fernanda Montenegro And Fernanda Torres
That situation still kind of happens in a way. Only not with rich white people anymore. But I believe not just in Brazil, other places too.

Amazing
The best film of 2024’ ❤😊
Quero ver.
