  • The Romanian Deadlift (RDL) is one of the best exercises out there to strengthen and grow your hamstrings. It is a very functional exercise by combining the glutes and lumbar spine to allow the hips to hinge properly and allow safe and strong movement to pick up and down heavy things from the floor.
That being said, beginners have a difficult time learning this exercise as they struggle to differentiate squatting and the hip hinge movement pattern. If the posterior chain for the lower body (glutes, hamstrings, lower back) is loaded properly, this can increase risk of injury to the lumbar spine (think of the classic saying "lift with your legs, not your back!).
Another challenge for beginners is to feel it in their glutes. Even if it seems like your technique is good, you still feel it in your lower back and this often lowers the confidence for this exercise. It is common for beginners, or with people returning to exercise from lower back pain to not have well activated glutes.
In that case you can watch this video here on how to quickly activate your glutes: • The Only Two Glute Act...

Nice explanation. Keeping that upper back arched keeps the tension in the hamstrings. I love RDLs
