Correct me if im wrong, but didn't Land's clone only cast a defensive spell and some sort of short range stunning spell. I'm not trying to diss the guy. I think it's even more impressive he was able to get through the exams with simple spells alone in such low quantity.

Well, he didn't know if going into this phase of the exam if that's what the exam called for. Since all of the other phases involved fighting, it makes sense that he'd have to fight again. But once he saw he had no chance he perished the thought.

But he does know that fighting the Frieren clone is pretty risky with no reward in return without a plan, Except for Gold boy, Denken will only prepare to fight when the situation needs to be and the benefits outweigh the risks.
For a long time I thought serie was the main villain because the intro made her look kinda sinister but she turned out to be pretty cool

Yeah, he occasionally uses magic for small stuff like that, he is a nice dude, but he is a mercenary who spends a great deal of time in wars and exterminating demons, his view on magic will inherently lean towards it being a weapon first, everything else second.
Also, if he was bullshitting and Serie knew, why would she pass him? That is the exact response she wants, it's her view on magic too and she clearly likes combat-focused mages. The smile is clearly one of satisfaction.

My interpretation is that Seire was surprised by the balls Methode had to say that,but was also secretly happy someone called her that,since it has probably been a couple thousands of years since someone treated her like that
It just means that Methode, instead of being intimidated, finds her cute and adorable.
I think everyone is misinterpreting the reason of Method's pass. It's because Serie couldn't tell what she actually thought when she saw her. unlike the other candidates where she knew everything that she needed in order to judge them. as Method has those mental/mind related magic, perhaps Serie couldn't read her.

Serie knows what Methode is thinking right there but can't comprehend why would she think that and she has to ask for confirmation. Its the same way that she has to ask Fern what she is seeing on her aura because she can't believe that a mere human mage saw her fluctuations. Methode pass because she isn't intimidated of her instead she found her adorable

She'd gladly pass Frieren. She just wants Frieren to be more like her. She thinks Frieren is wasting her talent, which infuriates her.

y'all are missing the big picture with Methode. Serie pretty much instantly gets a read on all the other mages. But she actually had to ask Methode what she thought instead of reading her mind. THATS why she passed.

I am taking notes for my next job interview. I must either point a weakness of the interviewer, challenge him/her to a fight, try to fool then with a fake CV or call him/her cute. Wish me luck everyone.

I really like this exam part of the show, it's not really about who is the strongest but who has the potential to be a great mage on their own right.
And about not being Frieren
@@dutchdragon2472 it's not that she didn't pass her just because she didn't like her, although that is partially the reason it is mostly because frieren has insane potential as a mage, but rather than try to hone her skills and strive to be better she rather wants to learn a bunch of spells that are useless in serie's eyes. She passed them not just because they have potential, but because they have the motivation to improve and become better mages.
@@ezronco.8671 It's as Flamme said. Serie is a mage of war while Frieren is a mage of peace. All the spells she deems to be useless are all very useful for everyday life, just not for combat.

Given that it came right after "Normally it wouldn't even occur to someone to fight me", my interpretation was that Übel also thought about fighting Serie except probably a heck of a lot longer than Denken did. 😂
Both Serie and Ubel has high perception ability(it is manifest as mana detection skill, one of innate skill to be mages, but its quality differ from mages to mages) so both don’t need talk as they already perceive each other before talk, still Ubel tried to prolong the chance to get more comprehension about great mages Serie. But Serie wouldn’t have it.😂😂

I like how most of them passed due to pure killing intend, Fern and Land passed out of Serie's curiousness and then Methode just called her cute

Frieren is probabaly a personal exception. She wasn’t afraid or nervous, but also didn’t care.

Frieren would be the completionist gamer who would use all the dumb looking weapons found in sidequest that in-lore should not work at all but she uses it anyway cause it has a high percent crit rate.

Serie obviously thinks that Fern have far more potential than every mage in the test, but Wirbel is the one that shares her ideology the most, both using magic as nothing but a tool, most of the time tool for killing

Which is why she was also confused on why she's only being told to master simple spells. I know her opinion might've changed a little even at the anime. But that is her original and pure sentiment towards magic being a tool.
Frieren collects more spells to understand humans. From the beginning, Fern has always seen being a mage as a form of repaying her debts to Heiter. Nothing other than a duty.

Frieren has spent the last 1000 years failing Serie's test. Frieren is extremely capable but still below average for her age.
@@Longs_ For there to be an average, doesn't there also need to be other elven mages her age to compare with? Doesn't seem like there are enough (or any) to go around. Makes more sense that Frieren is not as powerful as she could be, hypothetically. Otherwise, even if Serie is thinking of mages from thousands of years ago, doesn't really make sense because we see from the history of Zoltraak over 80 years how things can change, and have changed. Data analysts would never permit such a comparison.

To say Ubel could beat her is like saying a ballistic missile can beat orbital bombardment.
She definitely has the potential if she can visualize that she can cut through anything even through any magic not just clothes and hair, she could take out serie. Her ability is literally the same as Sukunas, but way shorter distance.
Methode's voice is beautiful. I didn't know the voice actor is the same as Kanao's.
Ubel passing is the most surprising but then Serie cares less about body count and more about raw talent.

For those saying Ubel could have killed Serie, I highly doubt it. Her binding spell wouldn't work here because Serie kept her feet in the water and was thus not completely visible. Plus, it likely wouldn't be strong enough anyway. Her cutting magic also wouldn't work because Serie would likely use purely magic barriers instead of physical defensive objects imbued with magical defense.
Who's to say seerie doesn't have immortality (don't answer that, manga readers). For all we know she can have a one shot spell just by looking at someone lmao

Frieren's clone used an instant cast spell without her staff against Fern. Serie probably got 100 different flavors of that spell 😂
I do think it'd be a closer fight than you'd think, though. In the sense that Ubel would last a minute or two, instead of getting instantly killed. She can learn the magic someone else is using by empathizing with them. This is also probably why Serie refused to speak with Ubel.

I get the feeling Serie immediately figured out how Ubel's magic worked, because after passing her she immediately clammed up, because if they get too familiar Ubel will be able to use the spells Serie knows.
Serie doesn't have "A" magic she is specialized in and even if she had one if she do not using it in front of ubel she can't steal it.
Ubel needs to see the spell in action and empathise with the caster. Even if ubel empathised with serie, shes not gonna instalearn any spells as she doesnt know whay spells serie knows.

The show makes mention several times about the strength of their magic being effected by their imagination. and i think serie judges them based off that.
Fern: Imagines she can become a strong mage under frierens guidance: Passed
Denken: Imagines he can take serie in a fight: Passed
Ubel: Imagines she can kill serie: Passed
Land: Imagines he can trick serie: Passed
Wirbel: Imagines himself already as being a first class mage: Passed
Methode: Imagines serie as being cute rather than scary: Passed
Frieren: Cannot imagine herself as passing the test. and so Failed..
I think this is the point that serie was trying to get across especially to frieren, sure she wants to fail frieren and set her up to do so.. but if frieren had simply used her imagination and beleived she could pass.. then she would have done. but her self doubt and lack of imagination is what made her fail.

I believe Serie saw a representation of herself as a human when she saw Ubel, that's why she passed her imo 😂. Fair enough a much younger and immature version, but the whatever made Ubel followed the recipe for Serie.
I think she passed Übel because, in a magic system where belief affects power, Übel's tenuous grasp on reality is a superpower.
Übel can do things more rational mages cannot because she's so delusional that she doesn't believe they're impossible the way any sane person would.
