How can one man write so many great guitar riffs? John squire is a genius and this is one of his best riffs. From the kickass blues riffs here, to the dreamy brilliant I wanna be adored, the bright shiny waterfall or she bangs the drums riffs. And yet he's still so underrated
One of my favourite albums. I love the band’s playing on this. All are on top form, which is surprising judging by the mood of the group at the time. Definitely more of John Squire passion project but I love it nonetheless. Great video 👍
Reni's backing vocals, in my opinion, are done deliberately to create musical tension tension which is resolved later. The Beatles did this a lot too. Sounds great to me
Yeah. They’re not harmonious, pretty backing vocals-that was the first album. This album is dirtier, murkier, nastier. The backing vocals create a devious edge under the main vocals you couldn’t achieve otherwise
I think they’re great. Listening to them out of context is entirely missing the point. They’re an instrument here, providing edge to the main vocals. Listen in context and it makes Ian sound more dangerous, edgy on this song
Hi James, been loving all your content recently after discovering your channel a few weeks ago. John Squire is my favourite guitarist and I take a lot of inspiration from him, so to have a channel talk in depth about him and other similar players has been fun to see. I'd love it if you had a listen to my band The Verdis. We're coming out of Sheffield and are ready to smash summer with lots of gigs on the way. Keep up the good work!
Re: Backing vocals by Reni, he is always _spot on_ so I don’t get that. Maybe it was originally him goofing around and when he left they put it on there on purpose? Lol. Another great video James. I need to catch up on where you are up to with your release. I know a lot of producers will have some detuned vocals blended into the mix to thicken the main vocal take. I'm not saying this was the reason for this but it works in the context of the mix.
That’s a brilliant analysis of the mix, James. It’s really interesting to see how recording philosophy shifts between eras and artists. For this reason I agree with another of your commentators that it would be great if you could do a Manics track. (As regards them, there are US and UK mixes of at least one album which might turn out to have different elements in each). A sideways slant on this might be to look at a Neil Young recording, since he’s generally been committed, along with David Briggs his main early producer, to trying to suggesting something close to a live feel in the studio. This means that mistakes are often left in purposely and the idea of buried tracks would seem a bit strange. Jack White has imitated this with some modifications. I was wondering too about those off-key backing vocals of Reni’s. Whatever the reason, they remind me of something I’ve experienced in live situations. It sounds very much like someone singing who can’t hear themselves properly. They hit more or less the right intervals between notes, but the whole set of notes is too low or high. This must have happened sometimes to Reni live, unless the SR’s monitoring was always perfect, which seems unlikely. Why you would get this in a studio is harder to see, unless he’s singing while playing drums (again unlikely). I wondered if maybe a live or rehearsal outtake had been imported because Reni was available to do fresh studio takes. Anyway, this is a wonderful series, as so many here agree, offering a quality of insight which really helps to account for the general impression made by a recording. Thank you!
Cheers Steve! Yeah I'd love to know what was going on with the backing vocals here. Frustratingly there is just so little behind-the-scenes information on the Roses, and they hardly ever talk to the press unless its to promote a tour or a release. Lots of guesswork is all that's left unfortunately!
One of The Best intros Ever, I love thisTune! Also The Second Coming is A Quality Album! Take away the 13 minutes intro n Its Obviously Better! I think a lot of the fans expected the debut part 2! Cheers James
Great insightful video James. Quite taken aback by how many tracks especially guitar was put down and it makes sense when listening to how full the track is. So many cool things going on. That drum groove is outrageous though I mean, it's totally sick. What a groove machine Reni is and it always sounds so effortless. I've got a copy of the second night of Heaton Park and it sounds like they hadn't ever been away, it sounded that good and IB was in tune for the whole gig which was amazing too. It's just bizarre how he actually can sing in tune then instantly become woeful. I'd love a bit of insight into why he's not consistent live. Cheers James!
I only ever saw them in the 2010s but was absolutely amazed how they could nail these tracks live too...for almost 30 years I'd thought Resurrection couldn't possibly impress live compared to the deep album mix, how wrong I was! And the new ending to Fool's Gold in the last round of gigs was killer :O
Really enjoying these videos James. Is there any chance that you could let the main tracks play for another 10 seconds or so, especially the main guitar part/drums/vocal? It'd be great to hear a bit more.....or would it create problems with copyright infringement? Cheers!

During the intro, alongside a similar sounding instrument, i have always heard a vocal harmony singing what sounds like "oooooooh. Make my....". It happens just once and sounds like it was cut off short. I cant find it in the isolated tracks but i cant help hearing it every time the song is played. Once you hear it, you cant miss it. Its on the original album version only. Not the single at approx 57 seconds. Its so clear once found. Love to know if anyone else can spot it.
OK I'm gonna be a troublemaker here hahaha I think you can hear the second slide guitar track. It has an INCREDIBLY human-sounding expression, but nonetheless I think it's a very buried John Squire slide guitar #2

Great video! Really enjoyed that just a few points, i know around the recording of this album there was a lot of turmoil People think it took 5 years to record it didnt. Recoding started in 93. They couldn’t record due to legal issues. From some of the bands interviews John quoted as saying that he wanted a drummer that was out of bed before 9pm. The drugs had a big negative impact on the band also around this time. Reni wasnt in a good place. We all know reni has a fantastic voice and even better drummer. And to me that sounds nothing like him. Also the demos for this album were recorded in the rolling stones mobile studio sitting in a pub carpark in N.wales deeside. Also johns over dubs are played with a strat or a telecaster not the big gold gibson. Hence the different tone. Great insight into this song really enjoy your breakdown of my favourite bands 👍 One of my favourite stories is the when oasis recorded DM and toured the whole world, and came back to record MG, the roses were still recording the stone coming
Reni BVs.... My thoughts 1. He was taking the mickey out of Ian's often out of tune vocals 2. He has aiming for a 'unison bend' type effect of being slightly sharp to cut through the mix 3. As you said, rough vocal before he quit
Yeah interesting ideas definitely. It's a shame they were always so interview & camera shy as a band, because we know so little about their behind the scenes world
The vocals on the made of stone doc are tuned ( melodyn ) to Fuck .... also it’s sounds like the BVs on this song have been put through a eventide harmoizer to thicken them up. Makes it sound pitchy in isolation.
The BGV on Love Spreads are definitely Squire. If you have listened to his vocals from his solo album it is the same weird nasal twangy delivery. Reni on a bad day would not have put down a vocal like this.
Great vid again James, is there not another rhythm track wi squire playing Dm#7 in there too? But my favourite track from sc is Daybreak I think this is Reni’s best Drumming especially when it just Reni part b4 the second verse kicks in again !
Hi James! Really love your videos I have an idea for one of the next videos, on be here now tour oasis played in my opinion their best version of Champagne Supernova, and this version got a really magic 4min+ outro, I really wanted to learn it I think it's really beautiful, but I can't find any tabs for it... Maybe you could make a cover of it? Anyway, keep going your videos are great!
Hi TGW. This is using the 'rock band' tracks which are freely available online - the song comes in 4 stems (drums, bass, guitar, everything else) and there are random moments when single stems are exposed, which is how I get the isolated moments
James well pointed out with the backing vocals by Reni. What I read in a Stone Roses book back in the 90s was John Squire was on some Led Zeppelin moment for the Second Coming album. What I gathered he was trying to call it all. Ian Brown said since they have a new record deal with more albums to come. Ian thought let John have his Led Zeppelin moment. Ian confronted John about this saying we're better than Led Zeppelin so we don't need to be a copycat band of them. Sadly of course the follow up album never happened. I think John wanted Reni to drum in different style than Reni wanted to do for this album. Probably with this and Squire on a Led Zep trip Reni had enough. I remember when I bought this album 1st time round to listening to it just couldn't get in to it. Took me three listens before I got into that album. Tightrope is probably the best track for me. Hidden track 99 I think it was, was a bonus too.
Yeah I do like the album, but there's bits on it that I struggle with. The long sections like the opening to Breaking Into Heaven, and lots of the repetitive stuff on Begging You I just found a barrier to appreciating it. I also found the backing vocals really difficult listening throughout - at the beginning of Tightrope especially
James I think they must of wasted so many hours in the recording studio and then given the ultimatum to pick their best songs for the album. Still baffled how Love is the Law wouldn't on the album.
Very interesting video! Hate to point out that the liner notes actually say Reni sang backing vocals on Tightrope rather than Mani. To my knowledge Mani never sang any backing vocals. Still a great informative video though!
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Oh right, sorry about that. Here in Australia, we've got Reni on there. Cheers. Please keep up the great videos, I'm really enjoying them.
I used to own the banjo used on “the foz”I have no way to prove it ,it was sold to a guitar dealer dude I used to know by aziz ibrahim who he said John squire left it in the rosés rehearsal room after he quit the roses , I sold it for 60 quid when I was on my arse
Ha this is easily the most requested one of these - annoyingly there is just nothing out there to work with. I wish there was access to some of the multitracks from Be Here Now, but there's just nothing out there as of yet
track 17 is not Ian Brown, thats definitely Reni, he did have a high voice but could also do softer lower backing vox, as heard on Going Down and Shoot You Down for example. you can also hear his dinstinctive pronunciation on the word 'queen' .......and also Track 18 is more Reni than Ian Brown, although both voices are in there......and with regards the 'out of tune' bit (which I dont think is out of tune) he's doing that on purpose that over rock voice, which when heard in the track when everything else is in sounds really good and couterpoints Ian Browns smoother vocal....and if it sounds good in the final mix thats all that matters
I wonder if it was Mani who provided that rough, gravelly backing vocal on Tightrope - the one that sounds like the guy from Gomez? It doesn't sound sweet enough to be Reni's mellifluous warble, and the liner notes don't say. It doesn't sound like Squire, I can't see Brown singing like that... all I ever hear is the guy from Gomez. Gomez are great, but on Stone Roses records I want to hear a Stone Rose.
Eh. If you listen to just the vocal tracks isolated the backing vocals suit it well. It’s not meant to be easy listening, it’s got a real dirty tension to it. Listening to Reni’s vocals on their own isn’t the point. It’s what they do under Ian’s main vocal. It sounds a bit unnerving, dangerous. Unlike, say, anything on their first album. That’s the point.
A studio track breakdown for I Am The Resurrection would be equally as good as this....I wonder how many guitar tracks Squire has recorded for that song. You can't really make a video about Love Spreads without Resurrection in my opinion, because they're basically two halves of the same coin 👍
As an album in the sense of musicianship its absolutely superb but its a departure from the eponymous first album? Think we were all expecting the first album mk 2 and Second Coming was so different. In the press this got panned at the time I remember? Everyone in Manchester was waiting for the Roses to save us from Oasis!! Only kidding.
Hahahaha yeah I like Second Coming. It's grown on me alot recently since I started researching Squire a bit more. The only thing that drives me mad about it is the backing vocals. If they did a version with the backing vocals mostly removed and the long extended sprawling instrumentals sections (intro to 'breaking into heaven', much of 'begging you') It would be massively more accessible to my ear
This is one of the greatest songs ever created

Great breakdown. Can I ask, is this all done by ear, or do you have software that separates the the various tracks?
Hi TGW. This is using the 'rock band' tracks which are freely available online - the song comes in 4 stems (drums, bass, guitar, everything else) and there are random moments when single stems are exposed, which is how I get the isolated moments
Did Yoko Ono perform the backing vocals?
where u get dem stems from, brudda?
@@tabeecorr6611 I'm happy John recorded Love Is The Law with The Seahorses and Chris Helme's vocals instead.
Very interesting video! Hate to point out that the liner notes actually say Reni sang backing vocals on Tightrope rather than Mani. To my knowledge Mani never sang any backing vocals. Still a great informative video though!
The recording they did of this for the Warchild album has the piano a lot louder in the mix. I actually prefer it like that.
Yeah that's a good version
I’m hidden in the trees with a pigmy she over there did I just hear that for the first time or is it just me getting it wrong
HA! It's a picnic.... but pygmy would have been WAAY funnier
I thought there could be Ayahuasca in the recording studio for a minute cheers
Mani didn't sing on "Tightrope." It was Ian, John and Reni.
Andrew, They made a mistake on the album listings saying it was Mani instead of Reni.
Yeah I've seen both in different pressings! I've seen 'Ian John and Mani' and I've seen 'Ian John and Reni'
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Oh right, sorry about that. Here in Australia, we've got Reni on there. Cheers. Please keep up the great videos, I'm really enjoying them.
Great deconstruction, thank you for this. Shame they forgot to write a song, but hey...
I used to own the banjo used on “the foz”I have no way to prove it ,it was sold to a guitar dealer dude I used to know by aziz ibrahim who he said John squire left it in the rosés rehearsal room after he quit the roses , I sold it for 60 quid when I was on my arse
I wonder where it is now
Probably forgotten sitting in some cupboard
@@danielwarren3138 I sold it at the cash generator for 60 quid, I doubt the sales guy retold the story to the next buyer
How do you get that bass sound ? It’s absolutely punchy
No idea! I bet you could google to find out what bass rig he used on the album though
If you could find some happy Mondays ones that would be sick
Would love to hear anything from bummed
@@pickybleatinge3744 unreal album
Interesting idea!
I always felt like Squire recycled a lot of this for Love is the law.
Yeah he was well and truly in his Jimmy Page phase for most of the 90s
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Defo especially on this Album and The Seahorses! Even live at the Reunion Gigs He was giving Page Moves on Stage!
Imagine a track by track for d'you know what i mean 😂😂
Ha this is easily the most requested one of these - annoyingly there is just nothing out there to work with. I wish there was access to some of the multitracks from Be Here Now, but there's just nothing out there as of yet
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar knowing be here now it could be an hour long video with the amount of tracks they used in that album 😂
track 17 is not Ian Brown, thats definitely Reni, he did have a high voice but could also do softer lower backing vox, as heard on Going Down and Shoot You Down for example. you can also hear his dinstinctive pronunciation on the word 'queen' .......and also Track 18 is more Reni than Ian Brown, although both voices are in there......and with regards the 'out of tune' bit (which I dont think is out of tune) he's doing that on purpose that over rock voice, which when heard in the track when everything else is in sounds really good and couterpoints Ian Browns smoother vocal....and if it sounds good in the final mix thats all that matters
The backing vocal parts you claim are awful are super cool
Reni is a far superior vocalist to Ian.
Second coming is a Way better album than the first , come at me ,I don’t care I’ve moved on from the roses
I don't know if better, different definitely.
