To be totally clear about the spoken language assessment, schools can choose just to listen to your normal talk in class, or ask you to have a one to one conversation with them, or ask you to simply record yourself. Here's the actual wording:
No requirement for teachers to submit sample of audio-visual recordings of spoken language assessment for exam board monitoring.

This just shows that the content we learn at GCSE is so unnecessary if we learn it to pass an exam and then forget about it. This whole situation demonstrated how incompetent the Uk educational system really is.

You may not forget about it though! To imply it will be is insultive to your own efforts so far and capabilities of retaining information. It may not be pointless if you find yourself fortunate to have retained all learnt during educational years in high school moreso than primary level. Nobody know what they will and won't retain, so cram your brain with as much knowledge as possible whilst you all still have access to free education and you can't really fail that way if GCSE results end up meaning very little at least you have crammed your brains with all the free educational knowledge you possibly can whilst your brains are still like sponges able to quickly absorb and retain.

    • @e.a.coldrick
      @e.a.coldrick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@deb7412 There's a scientific paper I recommend you read if you are interested in 'cramming your brain.' It's titled "Retrieval induces adaptive forgetting of competing memories via cortical pattern suppression." Basically, I'm sure that if I really tried, I could remember and retrieve some of the information that I had to learn for GCSE, however (as a scientist) if you were to present me with an English paper (no offense Mr Salles) then I would do nowhere near as well as I did at GCSE as I really have forgotten a lot of the knowledge that was deemed essential for the exam, but deemed inessential for my potential future career in science. The paper I mentioned explains it :)

    • @aysha6407
      @aysha6407 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@deb7412 Although, like you said our brains are like sponges at this current moment, learning information that would serve no purpose in the majority of peoples later life is absolutely pointless. Sure it is the government's method of organising a social and economic hierarchy, but unless one is passionate about a certain subject, we should not have to retain information in an otherwise totally useless subject. I do get that through learning the subject, we learn different experiences and other things that may benefit us later on. However, strictly referring back to the point in the video, teachers would rather get better grades than the actual learning which really just accentuates my point. It seems the government and schools have given up on us.

as someone going into year 11 i actually agree with this change. you may find it upsetting that we don’t get to learn everything but i found the last 6 months of lockdown really overwhelming and couldn’t keep up with the amount of content i should’ve learnt. and this is coming from someone projected high grades. also we can learn stuff in college i really doubt the spoken english assessments is going to change me and prepare me for life lol

I have to say that it definitely helps anyone who may be uncomfortable with public speaking and the whole experience of it for me and others was good for me and I could see myself using those skills in the future. Whether or not that’s the case for everyone I don’t know but I think it would be a shame for schools to drop it, not because of the grade you may receive but because of how it may help shape your speaking skills

I agree that y10s haven’t really learned much during lockdown as each schools have dealt with things differently. For example, mine wasn’t very good and taught set 1 maths work that we did at the very starry of y8 so we are extremely behind for all subjects. Even English the first 8 weeks of lockdown was just going over work we did in year 10. We are all extremely behind so i think that they needed to do a reduction to be honest. However, i do not agree with this as i have put the work in and tried to self teach myself some of my GCSEs so i also don’t think it is fair they have made these reductions e.g to speaking tests as for languages that’s the most important thing you need to know when you go to another country

I agree. The speaking aspect is the most important in both English and languages. It actually tests English (the exams are just about getting marks let's be honest) if anything should be scrapped it shouldn't be the speaking. My school also handled covid-19 poorly, while some schools were online and assigning work, my school didn't do much at all. And when students had the opportunity to return a couple weeks before summer. My school only did once a week, others were able to go 3/4 times a week to catch up.

My revision plan was actually very simple.
I wrote down my plan for the following term and what my goal was to finish.
I then uses to wake up at 5am in the morning and do like 3 subject (chemistry "30min", English "30min" and history "25min") those would be like something i haven't learned in school yet, I would especially do this for science.
Then during breaks, after I finished doing something with my friends I would just take out my revision notes and just read for few minutes before the ring bells so I won't forget.
These revisions cards would be something I learned in like yr 10.
After school I would relax for a bit then after 1 hour i would continue to revise subjects I haven't done in the morning and spear some time to read revision cards.
Btw remember to take care if your mental health and physical health.
It's good to pick a day where you just relax and focus on yourselves. My self-care day was on Saturday!!

Not to mention that a lot of students perform significantly better in the final exam than the rest of the year. The exams should be pushed back further in my opinion to allow for us to learn the content rather than just taking it away. I know that if GCSEs were delayed to account for the missed time spent in lockdown, it would be massively beneficial for me and a lot of other students.

As a student going into Year 11, I agree with you. All of the changes only succeed in reducing the value of GCSEs. In addition, the fact that Ofqual took FOUR MONTHS to propose changes is just so ridiculous - and only highlight how incompetent the education system is. I also think that teachers should have delivered lessons, like they normally would have, from the get go; whether that be through Zoom, Teams, TH-cam or any other way.
I don’t know why the government rejected modular exams?!? They make so much more sense, than cramming the entire curriculum into 1 month. They also relieve stress.
I think that GCSEs should be taught and assessed like this: in Year 11, all of the content is spread over the year (at least a half term), and assessed in modular exams. In Year 10, you have mock modular exams, some time after the actual Year 11 exams - after you’ve learned the content. This could also allow for a 3 week window, (after learning the content), which is the best time for active methods of learning - according to cognitive research. In addition, standards would be MUCH higher.
In addition to your questions about English Literature exams, what happens if you answer all of the questions anyway?? It’s disappointing that after Ofqual has taken such a long time to propose changes, that haven’t even made them completely clear.
In conclusion, the government’s response to the ENTIRE corona virus situation is completely ridiculous.
Edit: It’s also “weird” say the least... that students are assessed on how much the know in comparison to everyone else, rather than how much knowledge that actually know.
In addition, exams (science in particular) just don’t cover HALF of the curriculum. MAYBE a quarter - it’s so ridiculous!

these changes are needed since so many people haven't done any work and even if they have the pressure and anxiety/uncertainty over the work and everything that is going on in the world right now will make it harder for students to be motivated and do well without overworking themselves and literally having mental breakdowns (well at least for me lool) . These changes also show how bad the education system is. it shows how the only thing they care about is exams/grades and not about learning. I am dreading going back to school if I'm honest I have lost all motivation to do anything 😭😭 I've also had to start my DT coursework over lockdown and the summer with no help and I don't even know if sixth form open days will go ahead and I have no idea where I want to go for sixth form so I NEED to see the school/college first😭😭

tbh, the fact that a LOT of gcse content is being cut has me both devastated and relieved. Yes, there's a lot less stress since you're expected to know less (what a relief for someone with bad memory like me) but at the same time, this means that you'll be knowing less than other year 11s who've graduated before you or future year 11s who will graduate after you. It just feels... kind of sad to me? What was the point in teaching us all that content if we're expected to not remember it now? what are even the point of gcse's? you revise so hard for these exams, shed blood, sweat, and tears into doing them - but what's the point if you forget half of what you learnt after the exam because your knowledge only matters during the moment you're taking the exam? what's the point? i just hate this system. we're forced to take 10 subjects - and for what? to forget it all? just so that we have the grades and qualifications even though we dont retain the knowledge?
this is a very unopular opinion, and im probably going to hate myself and regret it later on in year 11 for even thinking this way, but im kind of glad that the maths gcse exams have remained the same. maths is one of my better subjects and i enjoy it (when i get the questions right, otherwise i hate it lmaoo) so if the exams are changed then i feel that if i do well then it wont feel like i did well because im good but rather because there's less content to learn. i want to prove to myself that i am good at maths but if i do well when theyve made a lot of reductions to the exams then the grade just won't feel very justified, if that makes sense? i want to feel like i earned that grade. that i did well because i put in the effort, not because of changes to the exam. i know this is a selfish thought, but its how i feel

To be honest as a person going into year 11 when we get back I do agree mainly because I am completely disheartened and gave up entirely in June and it has caused me so much stress at the sheer overwhelmingness of it all it got to the point where I just went into complete denial and refused to believe it was real the crushing amount of work more than what we would usual receive at that was impossible for me to keep up with and I kept of falling behind and whenever I tried to catch up the work I was behind on I then became behind on the work that I had received whilst catching up it was a never ending cycle of anxiety and stress and made me rather depressed so I couldn't take it anymore and completely gave up so to me I agree with this because even if we don't learn all of the things we would have we can always go back to it after gcses in our own time if we're really that concerned

Mr Salles, I 100% agree with you sir! Firstly can I just say thank you for helping me achieve two 9s at GCSE English, and whilst I didn't choose to study it at A level you helped me tremendously to actually enjoy learning the subject. Secondly, whilst I understand some students may be too overwhelmed and lacking motivation, the idea that students don't have to learn as much for these new GCSE changes actually makes me sad and sorry for the people going into year 11 - I loved all aspects of the English lit exam and to dismiss entire genres as non important is kind of disgraceful. As my chemistry teacher always says: "I will teach you two things - chemistry, and then how to pass a chemistry exam." If that's the mentality of teachers and students, surely it's time the system was remodelled!

Give your brain some time to rest. Also, your whole grade won't be ruined if you have one slightly bad exam day.

Honestly I agree with mr salles that the actual point in education is to learn as much as we can so we can use it in our lives, but sadly its the truth that we all have to admit that we all get judged based on our exam grades in the future, whether its for getting into unis or work, so its more “important” we get good grades. It just proves that the education system is so messed up that even the leaders of it realise all this is just for some numbers on a piece of paper

As someone going on to do a university degree in acting this September, I'd recommend picking a 1 and a half minute monologue it's slightly more difficult but it makes you focus on expression and makes you the centre of focus for the performance which is easier to mark. Oh if you all ready studying Stanislavski then if you wanted to improve expressions and movement though story telling then you should probably have a look at Biomechanics or if you wanted something more contemporary and modern there's allways physical theatre company's like DV8 or frantic assembly 😑😊

  • @olalassie29xox39

I did GCSE music, with AQA, last year and your performance pieces had to add up to 3 minutes, with both the solo and ensemble performance being not less than 1 minute long, and each composition, Brief and Free, had to be a minimum of one minute in length too. I think is it a bit silly for then to cut the time down by 1 minute because most performance because add up to over three minutes anyway, and when doing a composition if you follow a basic structure of 32 bars (A section) , 32 bars (b section) and then the A section repeated again with further development you will most likely have 2 to three minute piece (depending on the tempo). As well as that you do not even need to compose 32 bars of new music, you can compose 16 bars using a chord sequence (each chord over 2 bars), and then duplicate it and develop it. There also is not rule on the amount of instruments so you could do two pieces only using a piano and a violin if you wanted, this would mean you would only have to compose for three lines of music.
On the topic of the changes in subjects, I hope that with the English papers we can choose which areas to do, because I have tough my self the poetry though your videos, Sir, and when my school started giving up online lesson I was actually really good at poetry getting good marks, and it was one of the areas of English was dreading the most.
As well as that the school that I got to, because it is quite small, lets your do two options in year 10 and two in year 11 (with the other core subjects), so even without the changes we have to learn a subject in a year, granted we do have ten hours of lessons for each option subject each over two weeks. The changes to exams could mean we loss some of the lessons in our option subjects, allowing for extra time for core subjects, because we have to know less, or it might just mean that there is less for us to do in the lessons because we do not need to know as much anymore.
On a whole I think it would have been better to keep the exam the same, because the stress of waiting to find out what was going to happen was unnecessary, also the fact that there are still decisions to be made on the matter is ludicrous as for most students in England school are staring school in the next two weeks. If they did want to make change to the exam, and saw it as absolutely necessary, they could always have allowed for students to have blank anthologies in English Literature and more formulas given for Science and Maths etc. Doing this would aid students but only those who have learnt the syllabus. The students would still have to know the poems and how to use the formulas but some pressure would be lifted as they would not have to know them off by heart, and the students who did not know the syllabus would not be helped by them as they would, most likely, not know which ones to use or how to use them.

For Drama, there are three main sections, exam, scripted piece, written piece. It’s enough work as it is. I also find that making drama students write essays defies the whole drama as being an Arts subject as many people aren’t very good at writing essays but can perform well, subsequently lowering their grade.

Overall, school has been done so wrong that it’s gotten to the point where we only learn to perform in exams, our minds are trained for exams only now, which is sad. But now it is like this, we might aswell continue like this and not try to learn everything because then it would get way too stressful, and more people would give up. People with mental health issues would be at a disadvantage.

we managed to learn poetry from September- exam season and they decided to do the exam in year 10. Most schools have probably been learning it since year 9 so I think they’ll be fine

I know some people are complaining that some of these changes aren’t good enough, but just be thankful that you have some changes. Here in South Africa, schools closed in mid-March and started opening back up from June for certain grades only (for reference, our school year runs from mid-Jan to early December.) During the lockdown period, some private schools were able to provide online learning for their students but a very large majority of the population do not have access to internet and devices and hence have not been to school since mid-March. The grade 12 students (students in their last year of high school) are now still expected to write exams on the entire curriculum in November and the government is refusing to reduce the curriculum.

Different schools had different learning during lockdown. Slot of schools had online lessons in zoom or something, that followed the normal stuff school day, or at least had some lessons like that or slot of teacher student face to face. My school however, had a lot of teachers that weren't so good with technology. So we just had work set on class charts like how they do with homework. For me however, this didn't work. I was quickly overwhelmed by the amount of work that had to be done (our school closed a week before everyone else and thought we'd be going back so told teachers to set the amount of work we'd normally do in a lesson) it took me at least 2 maybe 3 times the time to get the work done than it should have, not to mention my low self confidence in my work. At school I'm normally hard working, in top sets, good grades. At home that all went out the window. Unlike in the classroom I couldn't just put my hand up and ask them to check my work to see if I was doing it right, or bounce ideas of classmates, now I could have emailed them, but I have anxiety and, well for me that just wasn't going to work. Our school only started using Microsoft teams like halfway into lockdown, and even then we didn't do online lessons. Some kids had one on ones with teachers, I only had maybe 2 and that was with my Art teacher who (bless her) is quite new to that sort of technology, and even normally, doesn't often get you're ideas - so online it was a lot harder as you couldn't really show her your book. (She's great tho, just going to say that). I got behind in Maths because they handed off the setting of our work to another teacher who I didn't know, and so I felt I couldn't ask questions, plus the work was set on PowerPoints which are ment to have a teacher talk through it and there was no voice over (plus theirs sometimes mistakes) and Hegaty Maths and our class hadn't used that before; I can't cope with change and she also sent out massive amount and I didn't understand stuff. (I also relied on having the same maths teacher as I had at the start of the year next year to help get us back up to standard, but it turns out he's going to another school this September. He was a great teacher and inlearnt so much and well in his classes, So I'm screwed). It took enough for me to motivate myself to do any work (I work best in the classroom, even in a normal week I struggled to motivate myself to do my homework when I get home), so long story short - I'm two weeks behind in everything, stress out when I think about school and the coming year, and didn't catch up over the summer because of this. My school is really great though and my teachers/ head of year are really great and understanding. Although I don't think they realise how behind I am.
So in Conclusion: a lot of kids will probably be behind and may give up in year 11. And I would be grateful for any amount of alterations to the exams, although the more the better. And you said in another video how messed up the exams are, so I don't know, I'm just hoping for good grades, the ones I was predicted in my Interim (Report).

I’m shitting myself about my drama devising piece. Before the lockdown we already established a script and the performance as a whole, but when we came back to school we had to adjust our ENTIRE script, staging, etc. We now have to distance and have NO physical contact, which is in the criteria to meet a certain grade I want to achieve.
We learned about this 3 weeks before our GCSE performance which will determine our grade. It’s an absolute shambles, I am fearful I won’t get the grade I deserve.

The changes are 50/50 as for history thats my favourite subject and its my passion and i want to be a history teacher so i wouldve liked to do the whole test but also it means less and im already at a disadvantage as i moved school and started 4 new subjects 3 of which nothibgs changed. It aldo means fir history i can focus more on 3 topics and get a better grade. For english less is amazing as english is something im mediocre at

I swear year 11 is gonna be the death of me lmao. Since school is finishing later I probably wont get home till 6 and if I actually went to sleep at the reccomended time (which I dont but shh) I would only get 4 hours to myself and homework, revision, housework, cooking dinner (my mums disabled so I do all the stuff round the house), all of that would cut into those 4 hours which seems hella unfair to me but oh well 🙃
