I've just realised this will be the last time I ever watch one of your videos. On one side, I'm happy that I've got English out of the way, but on the other, I won't ever watch a great teacher like yourself. It's a bittersweet experience. Thanks Mr Salles for all the advice!

    Mr Salles,
I doubt you will read this comment but I just want you to know you have helped me and many other students. Me and my friend always talk about how funny it is you teach with a spatula, and we have decided to buy our English teacher a spatula too! I will also buy some of your books to give my cousins an unfair advantage over others.

Sir, I’d like to give you heartfelt thanks for helping me on this great GCSE English journey of mine. Through every video, every publication, every guide, I have felt inspired to conquer a subject when 2 years ago I felt nervous just having to read something in class. To my fellow students reading this, I think I speak on behalf of you all when I say Mr Salles deserves praise. Here’s to all the English exams so far, and to triumphing our final one!

Thank you so much for all of your videos and for making English so easy. I've suffered with depression and anxiety since my school teacher would make seem English as a immensely difficult subject which require immensely great skills to master at GCSE levels this impacted me greately and I could not even get a pass after hours and hours of revision and writing a lot. The first time I got a 7 was after i gave up un the subject and watched only half of one of your 50min videos about macbeth, I was overjoyed thank you so much for eveything. wish you many more years of cooking GCSE english lit and lang exams

@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 😂Yes of course. This feels surreal as it was only 4 months ago I was on the receiving end of all this advice.
1 - Memorise analysis of quotes. Work on this analysis in isolation and ensure it is top quality and befitting of "level 6" standard incorporating sophisticated literary technique. Ensure also that this is versatile analysis so that it can fit in any essay matching any question possible. During your examination, alter words/phrases slightly to match the question. This worked seamlessly in my literature essays. This was so effective that one of my entire essays was just my memorised analysis with only the thesis and the conclusion slightly altered to directly answer the question (THIS IS SO KEY - MAKE SURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION). I can only assume based on the fact I got 157/160 that this essay scored a 30/30 or at the very least 27/30.
2 - For poetry, choose 3 or 4 poems and memorise a half essays worth of analysis for each of them. The poems you choose must fit all themes so you are prepared for any poem that comes up. Here however, analysis doesn't have to be versatile and can be generic -- (AS LONG AS YOU LINK IT EFFECTIVLEY AND SENSICALLY TO THE OTHER POEM). Despite this, if you want top marks, you want analysis to be detailed and include both advanced vocabulary and language techniques (Although I know you claim using sophisticated vocabulary doesn't add to your mark.)
3 - If you have loose change, or parents are willing to pay, get TILF (AI marking software). It is a monthly subscription so if like me, you struggled to pay for more than a month, get it a month before GCSE's around Mid April). It helped target my weaknesses and praised the strengths of my essays. Please don't let a bad mark demotivate you - as it did me - but learn from your errors.
4 - Top Marks requires dedication and Hard Work. From Christmas to the start of GCSE's, I must've written around 50 practise essays on all sorts of questions and on all 3 of my books/plays (ACC, AIC and The Merchant of Venice )and occasionally a poem question. Doing 1 a night -or even 1 every 2 nights- is key for developing essay writing skills which benefits all subjects. If you can and are not too tired, do these before sleep as it is scientifically proven to improve consolidation both the analysis you've inserted into an essay (which you must be attempting to memorise) but also general essay technique.
5 - Get good sleep, Eat well and exercise regularly. I cannot stress these 3 enough. I don't mean to brag, but throughout years 10 and 11, I always had the best memory out of my friends. I attribute this completely to my ample sleep and consistent sleep schedule as opposed to their ubiquitous terrible and inconsistent sleep patterns. I must also stress having fun is important. It is always necessary to break this once in a while to have fun with friends. I also had a mind hack during time before and during GCSE's: when I was feeling demotivated or I felt like revision was too laborious, I'd just go on a run. Preferably it should be over 8 minutes but just exercise. It works like magic. After my run, I'd shower, have a glass of water and there it was! My motivated always reappeared.
I hope this helps any upcoming students to achieve the grades they want. I also want to thank you again. I would not have been able to even dream of getting the grades I got without you, Mr Salles. Ill send my Essays when I get them. I would love for you to publish the Merchant of Venice essay as it is the piece of literature I struggled on most and there was no good student essays I could get inspiration from on this play. Thank you.

Hi Sir! I just wanted to say a massive thankyou to you. I got an 8 an English language after being predicted a 6 and getting 6s and 5s throughout. Your videos helped me improve massively specifically my favourite tip of your for paper 1 especially which is to keep writing as much as I can and believe me I did! I also got a 7 in literature sort of wish I got an 8 but it's still an improvement since I got a 5 in the mocks before and I'm still thankful regardless and once again your predictions and videos were perfect for last minute revision and really helped. Thankyou so so much your your help Mr Salles I truly appreciate your channel so much 💗

    • @MK-xr3kt
      @MK-xr3kt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish ofcourse!
      For language :
      1. I would say to learn how to write fast especially for paper 1 since the faster and more you right the more marks you get!
      2. PRE PLAN A VERY BASIC STORY. This story should be one which can be adjusted to fit any question and learn some generic ambitious words which you can fit in ang chosen scenario of yours (eg intense, calm etc). My story was literally about my physics teacher turning into a werewolf after an argument.
      3. For literature keep on linking your ideas to the question (even if it sounds repetitive!) because that's what the examiner is looking for.
      4. I would encourage people to give their own interpretations to quotes and analyse them in their own way since it makes you standout a bit more.
      5. Just relax after you are done! Don't stress and i assure you that you will be fine.

@@MrSallesTeachesEnglishOh my goodness I did NOT expect to get a reply back. Yes I do have some advice which taught me to achieve such a boost in my grade in so little time away from the mocks.
Ranking them in order from importance ( with 1 being most helpful ) and again this is just what personally helped me
      5. Definitely prioritize q5 & q4 in your language papers and spend around 5-10 minutes in your planning for q5.
      4. For Language Paper 2, Q5, if possible absolutely try to implement some of your own personal experiences into the answer. Anecdotes seem to work really well on the examiners as that has seemed to get me into that higher band for approaching a more complex idea. It doesn’t even have to even be completely true. Half lie, half truth is a good mix between the two and makes you sound more convincing.
      3. Write. Honestly just write as fast as you can and pray you had enough sleep for your brain to come up with those sweet new ideas that’ll impress the examiner. For example, in the unseen poetry section prioritize answering all two questions even if the first one doesn’t seem to be completely well made. In other words, you need to distinguish when it’s the right time to move on to the next question in order to complete all the questions in time. To do this you need a good understanding of your ability and how fast you can write, which can ofcourse be done through past papers.
      2. Make sure you get a good sleep the night before exam. Seriously. I know a bunch of people who spent all night cramming to take in as much information as possible but that only pushed them back as when the dreaded hour came, not one of them had the ability to think straight to analyze the extracts ( or the unseen poem ) Sure they may have done well to prepare a story for q5, but what about those 60 other marks? So please make sure you have the capacity to think and be creative because that’ll do you a lot more good than burning yourself out the day before.
Honorable Mention: Read Mr Salles’ books on kindle because they certainly helped me out a bunch ‼️
      1. Definitely reach out to someone with consistently high grades in english and request them to take a look at your essays and such as this was the main game changer for me. It helped me improve in so many ways and widened my vocabulary through implementing their language techniques into your own work, soon it’ll become as natural as breathing.
To be honest talent plays a MAJOR role in deciding what grade you get in english. I tried REALLY hard for the mocks and I still couldn’t reach anything higher than a 5. Sometimes you need to take a look at someone who’s talented and mix their talents alongside hard work to really achieve that grade you want
PS: I scored higher than the person who I asked to mark my essays 😄
