Myanmar: No Fear | Deadliest Journeys

  • 0:00 For more than half a century, the country has lived in isolation, cut off from the outside world by a succession of some of the toughest dictatorships on the planet.
    05:31 Journey to the Capital
    20:27 Help arrives
    24:58 History of Myanmar
39:44 In the footsteps of a monk
The Burmese regard their country as a beautiful sleeping girl. Today she opens her eyes a little but wakes him up hard. The country lacks everything, the infrastructure has been neglected for many years. But the Burmese keep smiling. In the North West, in the most mountainous region of the country, getting around is an adventure. The mountains reach 3000 meters in altitude and some roads climb to more than 2000 meters. With his truck, twice his age, Khampi struggles. Despite everything, man faces the roads or rather the tracks, with courage and coolness. Khampi never gets angry, he keeps a smile at all times even when he misses to tip over. The word “fear” seems to have disappeared from his vocabulary. The state of the roads is a serious handicap for the populations, but it has enabled the country to retain its beauty, its authenticity and its traditions. Young Sokna carries on an ancient ritual, the Kiss of Death. Legend has it that by kissing the head of a king cobra three times, the women of the village will quickly become pregnant. In Naypeedaw, the megalomaniacal capital erected by the military junta, highways hold a sad record. One of the least frequented on the planet. The country also holds another record, with the most terrifying train in Asia. It crosses a viaduct more than 100 meters high. Without any security. Barely a few centimeters separate the travelers from the void. Travel to the heart of Burma far from the tourist trails.

This is in fact a fantastically well made short documentary, it's shot so beautifully, it shows the lives of some interesting characters and tells their story with such elegance. Each short window into their lives seems like it could be a feature length documentary of their own. Myanmar, a beautiful country and a beautiful people, one of the most breathtaking refreshing places to go where around seemingly corner is someone going out of their way to help you, and now once again living a sad reality of life under ruthless junta rule. But of course - the burmese people have not given up. Let us all contribute to their success!

I "used to" belong to an Apostolic church here in NZ, until I discovered they were ILLEGALLY transporting church goers DONATED money into your country, via our vicar - who would tape the money to his stomach to avoid it being taken at any of the many border / check points.
Being a minister, he was "allowed" to go into Burma (Myanmar as it was later called) taking "openly" many bibles for the smaller villages in the inland areas, plus they had already placed a female vicar - in there, to allow him to have someone he was going to be residing with.
As soon as I discovered they were ILLEGALLY moving money in like that - I stopped attending that church and refused to help them.

These people despite of all hard situations they fight against and win everyday... I have never seen so much unity, togetherness and love for each other in cities where we have technology and Infrastructure... The more you are away of technology you are an safer human being... I will pray to God so that they get more power faith and love for each other to remain same and help each other.

It's been so engrossing that i had drifted to Burma, metaphorically speaking! My father who was a child had to flee Burma during World War II alongwith a large family by trekking, crossing raging rivers by boat, hitch hiking on military trucks (tamil sympathisers) and finally reached India. He passed away in 2018. The point is he would narrate stories of the well developed (those days) and the kind people and lifestyle the Burmese had and i always cherished the thought to visiting Burma with my Dad but it has remained a dream.
The stories shown in the video is most inspiring and hats off to the film makers! It's a beautiful country and we INdians wish them prosperity and success in the world we live in.

The gentleman with the "Frankentruck" (Sounded like they were calling him Mr. Korsam) is the first person in these videos to mention that the terrible conditions actually work as an advantage for him. His ability to operate on these roads is a valuable and rare commodity. I hope that as things improve on the roads featured in this series that it negatively affects the fewest people possible. Dangers of speedier traffic through villages and ease of occupation entry lowering wages are just two ways that there can be negative impact. Not exactly the same, but here in the US, the construction of the Interstate HIghway System was a great benefit but if you look along the old Route 66 you see the ravages of changes in traffic patterns. Suprised that this isn't brought up more in these documentaries. Not a criticism, just a thought.
