Pattaya Floods - The Worst in 10 Years Today

  • Today our plans need to be changed due to a huge deluge of rain in the Pattaya area. Our parking garage is flooded and the entrance closed, so we hire a taxi to take us through the flooded streets of Pattaya to our eventual destination in Jomtien. Enjoy the Ride!

      Good point,...But They had it all pumped out and back to normal by the following morning. It's not so much about something that goes wrong, it's more about what they do to make a bad situation better and they did a phenomenal job. Acts of god, or nature can and will happen everywhere, how you determine a good place is what they do and how they act in the face of one of these disasters, and I feel they went above and beyond to correct this situation. 👍

      @@Rides4Kickz that is my initial point. In a well managed building they already have the staff and infrastructure in place to remedy the situation. With a private landlord, I am not so sure they can get people in fast enough as every homeowner is trying to hire qualified people. You may be out of luck for weeks in renting a private home.
      I rather be in a,well managed building complex, but that is my personal opinion.

    Many moons ago, I was staying in the PBR (next to you, behind travel lodge), when It flooded the worst it had ever done... It put me off all the places on Soi 15, as their underground parking was entirely submerged... and with the drainage 'improvements', it appears to have gotten worse and worse... aka they 'fixed' it... so expect more of the same with every 'beach rd' improvement project... Good luck, stay dry... and keep a look out for open man holes and live wires...

    One thing about renting a house vs a modern condominium, is you have staff to make repairs and deal with the flooding at condominiums. At a private house either you need to take care of the problems or expect a long wait for your landlord to help you.

    • @anthonyC214
      @anthonyC214 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pat B interesting read. Yes, liability laws are different in each country. But in the US the act of God defense holds up in Court only if " the disaster was such an event , so sudden, where a reasonable man could not take remedies to mitigate ". In school we would often joke where the Court could ever find that reasonable man.
      In any event the condo building insurance should cover the damage to the common area as well as the individual apartment owner apartment and car insurance normally insured under the same policy would cover damage to the apartment and auto .
      Do not know about Thailand.

      assuming the condo is repaired rather than letting it collapse and kill its residents

    • @anthonyC214
      @anthonyC214 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crcr7659 you are referring to the issue in Maimi. Yes, in its case,normal insurance for hurricane or wind damages, would not cover the structural problems in the building.
      Clearly, the management board of directors of the Florida condominium that collapsed did not do their due diligence and addressed the issues, make the repairs and give every apartment owner an assessment. Normally in the case where millions of dollars are needed the building would take out a loan, make the repairs and issue an assessment. But in the Florida case they did not do that as they wanted to keep the resale price of the apartments. More debts a building has, the less valuable are the apartments within.

    Flooding been going on forever. I go back to 2004 and remember some wet years. Pattaya geography is downslope all the way from the surrounding hills. years of cutting back forests, trees, shrubs and other vegetation is bad. Those used to be buffers and help absorb and slow down the water and give it time to soak into the ground and reservoirs and underground aquifers. Instead, now the fresh water runs off into the sea. And Pattaya itself of course with all its concrete speeds up the runoff and even less time and area for the water to soak into the ground. And some of the streets and building layouts, literally make for conduits and flow choke points that increases the water speed to currents! They could clean the sewers all they want but they could never build enough capability to handle all the water. There is lots and lots of square miles and acre-feet of water heading Pattaya's way.

    I lived in Pattaya for two years until about 3 weeks ago, now back home, that's by far the worst flood I've seen. I know your Soi well, I walked from the mall to Soi Buakhao countless times. Hopefully this will be the worst one and go back to the normal levels.

      Yes, some others have said it was the worst they've seen as well. Rained all night again last night 🤣

    So far Phnom Penh has had a mild rainy season. I once fell into a ditch obscured by Pattaya floodwaters. Luckily not entangled and drowned.

    See if you can find an old traditional thai house build on stilts - no flooding inside - and nice to sit under the house when the weather is to hot. Just an idea -:)

      Lease instead of buy. It is usually the best idea to not invest too much into Thailand. Things happen

    One nice thing about Pratamnak Hill neighborhood in Pattaya is that it never floods during rainy season. Central Pattaya seems to be the worse, they’ve never solved this problem and seems to get worse year after year.

    Best sea breeze to reduce the humidity on those stinking hot days and no flooding either

    Do they have a drainage issue or is it just so much rain at one time regardless of the infrastructure?

    To move from Pattaya because of flooding is crazy. Pattaya is always a mess in rainy season. There is no high ground in Pattaya. Moving uphill is the logical choice. The truth is : this is Thailand and it's rainy season. Just a foot up for my residence on a long 20 foot incline which is 2 feet from the road is my home in Chiang Mai. I am from Albany New York. You can evacuate to another flood prone area of Pattaya. Evacuate in elevation.

    Always look at the positive parts of rain, it's good for farmers, its good for the temperature, its a free car wash, it fills the water reservoir for drinking, it cleans the pollutants in the sky, it helps the plants grow for food, and so many other positive effects. Rains a good thing. I love taking my shoes off and sit around, dry your feet, have a beer, and now you have a party. Be careful water can be?????

    Are the houses in Pattaya raised? I know that in Koh Samui another video I was watching showed raised houses. They looked cute but they were also practical because of the rain.

    I remember the flood over ten year's ago like this one. So many garage parking flooded and had car's floating in them. Now everyone that was flooded will stack all of the damaged items on the side of the road and it stinks

    The soi Diana rapids were quite something. I thought it would be even water level but I was wrong. Must have been fairly deep on 2nd road if that was the case... Guessing most of that water was tasty and nutritious wastewater mixed with stormwater...
