I disagree in general. Im 38 years old and been a star wars fan since ive been 7 years old. You cant satisfy star wars fans rather it is good or bad. I hated the sequels JJ Abrams destroyed star wars. It is actually better to preach the gospel of star wars rather then tell a new story.

It's a only Symptom of Hollywood's refusal to strive to create art. But they'd rather go great lengths to churn out a product to make money.

Well the Clone Wars animated series were excellent imo, and even The Bad Batch, but in the live action side is very boring. Maybe Mandalorian is safe, but now is like the plot is copied to Obi Wan.

I’ve been saying from the first two episodes, they shouldn’t have put Luke and Leia. It should have been a young Padawan survivor - this would strengthen the Reva story, the Kenobi story, and that character being more in tune with the inquisitor plot as well

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of this show, even after the final Episode.
It feels really cheap, the story is outrageous (one plothole after another), fight and escape scenes are terribly directed (Shaky Cam sucks) and Obi-Wan isn't even really the main character in his own show.
And I also have the impression that the marketing department wrote the script and not scriptwriters.
A 4/10 from me and that's only because of Ewan McGregor who really tries as does Hayden Christensen in the very few scenes he appears.
    What a disappointment!

As usual Jared puts it so perfectly into words, those were my exact feelings, Disney is the laziest mf company, they can even do a GREAT lightsaber fight, the vader vs obi-wan in the finale it's okay at best, so shaky and dark, smh I wanna see EVERYTHING, for Christ sake they just need to watch the Old Republic cinematic and that's it, literally just do that.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!!!

Both of the fights between Obi-Wan(Ewan McGregor) and Darth Vader(Hayden Christensen) were well done. I have to admit that the second fight between Obi-Wan and Vader feels to me that Disney ripped it off from the fight between Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano from the Animated series Star Wars Rebels season four episode 13 A World Between Worlds. That aired on February 26, 2018.

Exactly, that moment was cool, but Rebels (a show I did not like overall) did the exact same thing better. Inquisitors hunting rogue Jedi are cool, but Jedi Fallen Order did the exact same thing better. Infiltrating the Inquisitor base was neat, but Jedi Fallen Order did the EXACT same thing (sneak in from underwater, crash an underwater tunnel) better. I wanted to like this show but everything that was good was already done scene for scene in versions I liked better.

Watching the Kenobi series is like trying to fight inflation. There are so many issues on so many levels and in such variety that I have no idea where to start.
It's a freaking mess. It's genuinely unenjoyable to me due to the endless flaws, unexplained plot holes, ridiculous lack of consequences (nobody dies from getting stabbed by a lightsaber anymore?!), illogical character development and overall incoherent storytelling that even rushes its final... It was so simple to make, I had so low expectations and they still found a way to mess it up.

My question is: how the heck did Reva get to Owen’s farm from one scene to the next?! She basically teleported with a hole in her stomach. Her arch started off good but ended up weird. This is coming from a casual Star Wars viewer and having just watched Visions in the last few days.

  • @JimmyDThing

I think the thing that stood out as most frustrating to me was Leia. First: I don't know why she needed to be in the show, BUT if they're going to have her in there... they've lost a wonderful opportunity.
A parallel where Leia realizes and says outloud that "they let us go" and are tracking them.... was annoying. The parallel event, had she NOT realized it and been devastated by not being savvy enough to realize it, would have been really great! Learning: This isn't that Leia yet, we're gonna get to learn how she got to be that Leia. But instead... she's just apparently ALWAYS been that way. And so it comes off feeling like memberries.

Great video, It was nice see my own feelings vocalized. I think I realized the show wasn't working when I saw the Clone Trooper veteran cameo in episode 2. He's sitting on the city streets begging with an upturned helmet and I thought 'What if that was the story?! That should be the story!": Obi-Wan getting involved in the lives of little people throughout SW universe, a nobody anthology where each story stands on its own and gives you a better definition of the Empire, the world, and why we're fighting.
As it stands, we get an undeveloped arrangement of nostalgia heavy set pieces loosely tethered together by a pretense of a plot. Leia's kidnapping and operating as a major character being the principle motivation of story line makes it unavoidable. Having Darth Vader also I think kind of makes it inevitable and provides a difficult task to justify why one should care. 'The better innings were had elsewhere' is basically all the show has to say, and unfortunately it isn't all that good at doing that. The lack of development was extremely apparent.

As a kid i always believed a secret jedi enclave was on Alderaan since Luke has to learn the ways of the Force to go there with Ben. This series could have been perfect to create that - then ofcause have it blown up by the death star in episode 4. Maybe that was too dark for Kathleen Kennedy.

What I was hoping this show would be is him doing a little Yoda Clone Wars arc. To explain,in Clone Wars,Yoda learned about the path to immortality (force ghost shit). He battles his demons,a version of himself turned to the dark side, fuckin Darth Bane,it’s all cool stuff. It explains the line he mentions about immortality in Episode 3 and it implies that Obi Wan definitely does something of this manner to become a force ghost himself in the OT. Now force ghost stuff is weird because so many things overlap, don’t make sense, retcon shit, but it would’ve been so cool to see just Obi Wan,facing his inner demons and triumphing through the force
And they sure as hell could’ve fit the Vader rematch within that, given that Obi Wan is very haunted by that initial battle and their relationship as a whole
But instead,it was just a really drawn out sidequest with a really good fight at the end. It’s super mid

I remember reading a Star Wars legends story where Obi-Wan visits the medical facility on Coruscant and learns Anakin survived, and Vader visits the facility where Padme died and her grave on Naboo. I prefer that book due to the emotions of the characters being more thought out, but the show was half-decent.

I recently referred to these Disney+ series, Solo, and Rogue One as cheap caulking, filling in gaps poorly and and at times without necessity. Rogue One owes its existence to explaining a not-plot-hole in the first movie, that being the exhaust port being so obvious a weakness and so easy to hit, supposedly, that it had to intentional sabotage (if anything, the exhaust port is actually too small to handle its function of exhausting heat from the core). There were so many novels in the 1990s that proves new and better stories could be told in this universe, with or without the original cast.

    • @kevintrjohnson

One aspect that made Reva’s story accidentally/coincidentally more emotional is the similarity between her story of hiding amongst the dead children, which is similar to the account of one of the survivors of the Uvalde shooting. In the end, though, her character arc suffers from the comparison and I can’t at this moment, at least, separate the two. Seeing the murder of the younglings as analogous to a school shooting-let’s face it, there were always similarities-muddies Reva’s arc; it would be like one of the Columbine survivors becoming obsessed with hunting down one of Dylan Kleybold’s teachers for failing to stop the shooting. It’s a workable idea, but the execution is bad. The reason Vader’s redemption worked in ROTJ is not that Lucas tapped into our hidden desire to forgive a murderous space Nazi, rather he tapped into our desire to save our own fathers from their antiquated beliefs and in turn earn their acceptance and approval. The rejection of the sequel trilogy and Kylo Ren’s mcclunky transition back to the light side is proof of this-there’s not a real world relationship dynamic analogous to our relationship to Ren, because that relationship is amorphous and not as compelling, so we’re left trying to forgive a space Nazi. Perhaps if the filmmakers had focused on putting us into Leia and Han’s role as the parents of a metaphorically lost child, but instead we’re put into Rei’s shoes in a fairly toxic will they won’t they relationship with Ren’s mod bod, and it just doesn’t compare. How are we supposed to feel about Reva’s character? It’s just as nebulous, if not more so, and the idea of her going after Luke after being reminded of her trauma might be her most unforgivable act. At the very least, it makes no damn sense, both as character growth and technical storytelling (she’s just been impaled by a lightsaber, then instantly travels to Tatooine between episodes as if hyperspace is an instantaneous wormhole, and it has never been portrayed that way except in the Disney era). At least Ren sacrificed himself to prove his transformation. Reva is a frustrating character on almost every level (I do like the actress, but the writing and direction do her no favors).

Is the story is that she escaped the execution of the younglings? I thought they actually spared some younglings to be brainwashed and she just rejected the reprogramming.

One of the best female characters in animation is Mrs Brisby from Secret of NIMH. A widowed mother with a deathly ill child and an apocalyptic disaster (at least by mouse scale) looming on the horizon, she constantly has to overcome her fears in her efforts to save her family. She’s fearful, but not cowardly, and the fact that she does stand up to her fears shows more strength and resolve than characters that are just blindly brave.

“I don’t understand why people get upset when others enjoy something they don’t, just be happy for people.”
Generally, this is a very true statement, and I get so frustrated when people go to war over something and call everyone on the other side idiots for not appreciating the good in it or not recognizing the bad. A great example that I have a lot of history with is BvS, a film with tremendous problems but quite a bit of potential and great thematic elements, where it seems everyone only sees the good or the bad and thinks those who see it differently than them are ignorant snobs.
However, when you said this it made me think of a lot of the current controversies surrounding adaptations and other things building on preexisting franchises, where a lot of people are asking why they’re worth going to war over, and in these cases I firmly believe we need to stand against the desecration of these beloved works. I am sickened by those who think they can use the name of a preexisting and beloved IP to get people to watch their own creation with no desire to truly bring what makes the original great faithfully to a new audience. In cases such as these, I will not stop attacking them, and while I will never be so pathetic as to attack individuals who enjoy them, I want them to fail and I want people to see them for what they are so that the world will know the works they are spitting on are not to be messed with.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they bought a classic sports car. They wanted to fix it up and go racing every weekend. But, after they souped-up the engine and restored the original paint color, they decided to park it in a showroom so fans can appreciate all the work they did to restore the original glory.

I always thought the fan response to the Last Jedi put the fear of innovation into Disney. TLJ isn't perfect but the reaction was off the scale crazy. So Disney ran the numbers and saw how well received the Force Awakens was in comparison and here we are. Disney is a business end of the day and they will sell what they think people will buy and rate highly. We did this to ourselves. Nothing but call backs and references until we stop watching

Could you do a video on why western cultures think killing or harming a child is so much worse than killing an adult? I noticed it came out a lot in this series, when obi wan is pleading with Roken to save Leia, the final appeal is that she's a child. When Tala recalls her traumatic memory of slaughtering 4 families, she mentions there were 6 children as if that made the crime worse.

I agree that people can like what they want and liking bland lip service stuff is obviously a freedom that people have. Still I would ague that not challenging this support for mediocre content is a problem and has long-term consequences. Disney drowns the ether in content and just takes up space by volume and not quality, this has severe consequences in what shows are greenlit and which not. So I think a small dose of poking people to not just eat any crap Disney puts out cause it has a thing they remember from the other thing is a healthy thing to do. Its like when you just eat fast food, at some point some should point out that's not good and you should adjust your diet because we are all paying for it.

I enjoyed the series but I do agree with some of your criticisms. They should have justified some of the story points better, or just written them differently.
But I disagree with a couple of your points. Mostly the Leia related ones, I do think she has an arc in this series. I think she realizes at the end she can be herself while still accepting the responsibility she has a a political leader, and more subtly that she is a valid daughter of her family even if she is adopted. It’s not a dramatic change, but it does give some background to her OT character.
My other is your criticism on the reliance of Lucas’s Star Wars. I think it’s justified that the only reason Obi-Wan would leave Tatooine is to save the other Skywalker sibling. And no offense but the alternatives you gave for the story are pretty derivative too. But I get what you’re saying and it’s definitely a valid criticism of the franchise as a whole. Hopefully new content will break away more

Yeah look the show was rushed, underwritten and had a lot of weird technical and production issues but overall as a star wars fan I enjoyed it. Still better than the prequels. It was just great seeing Ewan and Hayden back doing more Star Wars stuff. Definitely not garbage but very messy.
And I'm not gonna give this thing shit for being timid, or unimaginative or redundant because this show is the exact thing fans have been clamouring for for decades. Then we finally get it and everyone complains. I think sometimes it's ok for us to get stories like these sometimes...as long as we get new stories as well. Which seems like what they're gonna be doing with Taika's new movie.

NOOOOOO, very disappointed to hear you say the cracked helmet scene even ALMOST justifies this mediocre production. It REALLY doesn't. You can tell that the entire conceit of the show started with this scene, and the writers wrote backwards from it to build the story. It's the only scene in the entire series that doesn't feel like it's jsut spinning its wheels and is actually adding anything of value to the franchise's already sparse mythos.
The show did nothing to earn any of your emotions during that final confrontation. Everything you feel is derivative from knowing these characters from other products. And, as you stated, how the confrontation ended made ZERO sense.
Just about all aspects of this were terrible.

I skimmed through the episodes again after finishing them and 80% of episode 1 consists of shot-reverse-shot dialogue in a boring, flat, cold, lifeless frame. There's no energy put into most of the cinematography, coloring and just general atmosphere. Episode 1 contains one single, mildly successful opening action sequence. Episode 2 contains one brief hallway fist fight, one clunky, boring chase scene and one hilariously stupid chase scene. These two episodes run 75 minutes excluding credits and the vast majority of it is two or three people on an isolated set sleepily meandering through exposition.
The main child actor's performance is so bizarre, uncanny and stiff; really couldn't stand watching any time they were on screen. Reminiscent of Baby Geniuses in all the worst ways.
Ewan is nailing the "70% Alec Guinness/30% Young Obi" balance. He's sad and boring like he should be.
The Imperial officer characters are the best part of this by far. The only performances with any life and originality to them. Fucking boring ass cucky Jedi I actually want Order 66 to be fulfilled at this point!!
The score is the prequels but watered down; disappointing.
Kumail Nanjiani. Jesus Christ. One of the worst casting decisions I think I've seen in years. He isn't acting. He's just being himself, which I blame on whoever cast him as a personal friendly gesture. Thoroughly murdered my suspense of disbelief multiple times over. Another exhausting boomer moment where you know all the out-of-touch fat-cat producers on set are laughing their asses off at the lowest common denominator intro-to-improv "comedy". I love the guy when he's cast correctly. This is wrong.

Disney did try to tell a new SW story in TLJ, where characters were not just idealized versions of their former installment, and some boys on the internet shat their pants to hard, Disney got scared and decided it not worth the effort if it just causes controversy. But I do agree, it is a shame that they gave in.

Sorry, but I must disagree with most of this take because is too similar to the criticisms of people that is hating Star Wars because is a Disney product. If George Lucas still own SW and made the Kenobi series exactly as the one we got, I wonder if the criticism would be the same. When there’s nostalgia and fan service some people complain. When there’s none of that even more people complain. There’s no way the artists making the movie or series can please everybody. One aspect that it not mention by the critics are the work of the artists by its own merit. Is all about Disney didn’t do that or Disney is just exploiting nostalgia or whatever. When the focus is in the corporation the hard labor of the artists is demeaned and under appreciated. When people talk about the success of The Mandalorian all the credit goes to Filoni, Favreau, and all their team. When the end result is not a five star classic then the conversation turns into a Disney vilification. Above all I respect the work and effort of the artists involved. I think Deborah Chow did a fantastic job directing and running the series. It wasn’t flawless. The execution of some aspects of the story could have been better. And I’m confident that all the room left for improvement will be taken care of in a second season if it happens. I would love to see all the critics tell directly to Chow, McGregor, Christensen, and everyone involved in the production, that despite their work the series didn’t justify its existence and that they are just meaningless tools of a creatively broken Disney. That would be a great behind the scenes bonus material. That been said, I’m tired of some people demeaning in some respect the enthusiasm and satisfaction that a lot people express after watching a series like this. I’m pretty sure that the consensus is that ‘Kenobi’ wasn’t a classic like the best seasons of the Sopranos and Breaking Bad. The thing is that many fans, including me, prefer to rejoice in the good things we got in an overall very entertaining six episodes series. That doesn’t mean we don’t have high expectations for every new SW project. Hell, everybody expects the best. What it means is that after the fact we prefer to focus on the positive and don’t let the negative ruin the experience. Unfortunately because everybody have access to the internet, the enjoyment of the experience is thwarted by the criticism that in many instances is in bad faith. The point of all my rambling is that, sure, there’s a lot of flaws and nitpicking that can be made of the series. But all criticism must be made in consideration to the hard work of the artists who themselves are fans of SW. This is not about Disney. Disney owns a lot of shit and it is one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world for a reason. So, because the product didn’t met your expectations that doesn’t mean the art itself have no merit to exist or that all of us that like it are mindless consumers that satisfied with mediocrity.
