      I don't love it.
      Them knowing everything that happened in past Star Treks, but not about anything from other starships makes it just a cryingly outright parody of the whole genré.
      I mean, sure it is a parody, and I don't mind that too much, but a "Cryingly Obvious" parody is just not as much fun. 🙁

      They're the flagships. People on there are the best of the best. In a meritocracy like the Federation, that makes them celebs.
      I know people who know everything there is know about the Kardashians, but they don't know the guy two cubicles over.
      Makes perfect sense to me.
      Don't get me wrong, this show is still something of a parody. But this part actually isn't a part of that.

      I absolutely love this scene. Boimler understands that, per Janeway, "weird is part of the job" and it's often frustrating, but at the end of the day he 100% believes in Starfleet's ideals and trusts the bridge crew to do their job. Amidst the goofy references, it's a heartwarming reconstruction of the Trek universe I adore!

      It'd be like blaming the Men in Black for every alien threat they don't know about, or blaming BSAA for every BOW experiment they didn't stop. The universe is a chaotic place, and even Batman doesn't know how respond to every scenario right off the bat.
      Sure, Mariner and her crew are in an era where people are already rather numb to the whole "bizarro universe full of weirdoes" reality, but even THEY get caught off guard every now and then. They just got really good at adapting, which is the whole point of evolution after all.

      Personally, I find this a hilariously textbook example of why Star Trek is such an unpleasant place to live😂. Nothing he said here is wrong or false. In every iteration of Star Trek, situations tend to suddenly go crazy and wrong with no time to warn the lower decks. It's just "Red Alert, hope you don't get sucked out through a hull breach!" And let's be honest, in TNG, Riker kept getting into trouble because of his latest girl of the week before he finally settled on Troi, and 99 times out of 100, the majority of the episode involves figuring out what the heck is going on.
    Heck, looked at without the haze of nostalgia, every captain was flawed. Kirk was highly racist against Klingons for personal reasons, so much so that the entire movie The Undiscovered Country was kicked off because a Vulcan crewmate heard Kirk making a racist rant in his quarters. Picard tended to stick far too closely to the rules instead of doing what was right which doomed at least one pre-warp civilization. Sisko had his entire "In The Pale Moonlight" episode which speaks for itself. Janeway got her crew literally destroyed multiple times and only got save because Deus Ex Machina happened over and over and over again. The list goes on and on. The captains and bridge crew of Star Trek were never perfect and were never gods. This episode, heck, this entire series is about showing what life is like for ordinary people in Star Trek, having to struggle to survive the bad decisions of the people in charge who, once you've known them long enough to see past the veil of hero-worship, are just as flawed as the people they lead.

If it aired on television, it's part of Star Trek canon, and that includes the poorly written episodes, the episodes that make no sense, etc. You're like those guys who get angry about Midochlorians from Star Wars: It's canon, direct from the man who created the series itself, but people still get themselves worked into a frothy rage about it because they don't like the idea of it and want to deny its canon status despite the fact that it was part of the lore created by George Lucas himself. In order to truly parody something right, you must know the lore inside-out to gain access to all the material the source material provides, and you have to observe it keenly to really take advantage of everything. That sort of keen observation has to have love and respect even when you're spoofing it. In other words to really parody something, you have to really respect the material enough to learn it and stick to it and in some ways love it. But how would he know? He doesn't have a monitor to watch what is going on or even a twitter to follow the senior staff.
    I think the thing is that while the senior officers seem like perfect beings they are just more experienced so seem that way to the average 21st century knuckle dragger. It's just that their characters need to be larger then life so the audience can be more excited about what's happening and they can play out larger moral dilemmas. The Orville does a great job of making the whole crew seem much more relatable.

    I wish this episode went further. Instead of having the cadets complain about their superiors' quirks or recklessness, have them mention real flaws in how they handle missions. Most Starfleet captains have allowed entire civilizations to suffer pointlessly all in the name of the almighty Prime Directive; and worst, a couple even felt proud of it. Reveal a cadet disobeyed their captain by giving the dying aliens life-saving medicine despite them not having warp tech. It'd be a good way to retcon some of the uglier past episodes.

    Just a general question for the entire Trek Franchise: Why are there like 500 different ship builds for Starfleet? Do ship architects just toss them at admirals for free?! There's a Constitution class, a Constellation class, a Galaxy class, Ambassador class, Miranda class, Defiant class, This class, That class... just how many shipyards does the Federation have to keep squeezing out all these ships?!?!

    • @Gomjibar
      @Gomjibar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In universe explanation: as technology advanced they were updating old ships with current tech (sometimes causing significate shapes to their profile and not always the same depending on the tech added) and at the same time were designing new ships purpose built for the new tech. Add this with the really long life span their ship hulls have (example the old Miranda and Excelsior class ships were still in service when the new Sovereign class ships were being built) and you get multiple ship generations all flying around at the same time. You also have ships designed for different mission profiles, adding even more variations.
      Behind the scenes reason: the creators of the show had to reuse old models to save money and would kit-bash different ship parts together to make new ones for background shots, causing a wide variety of ships that all had similar features but looked different enough.

    • @insignificantgnat9334

      If your navy is large enough you can get some pretty specialized and esoteric designs, it's happened in real life. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_classification_symbol#Surface_combatant_type is/was the USN classification system for ship types. Note that these are just possible categories for a ship and not specific classes.

      If the Federation was real, it would require tens of thousands of ships given its size. they have over a hundred and fifty member worlds. That is not counting the colonies and outposts. Imagine that half of the have a billion people each and you get 75 billion, but most planets would probably more given that they are mostly home worlds. a number of half a trillion people living in the Federation would be a realistic guess. They are spread across 8000 light years, so a dozen major shipyards like Utopia Planitia is my guess. Even with all the old ships, you need shipyards to refit and maintain them.

    • @pauls3604
      @pauls3604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep in mind that you’re talking about ships that existed in very different times in your list. The constitution class is over 100 years older than the Galaxy class. Look at the ship designs of your average world navy over a century of development, and you get the idea...
