It is this versatility that has made the California the world’s most successful camper van in its class. And now - after selling 260,000 units of this product line - Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting a world premiere of the new California CONCEPT at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Düsseldorf. The show vehicle opens a window into the future of this iconic vehicle. It features state-of-the-art powertrains and the latest assist and infotainment systems as well as the next generation of camper van equipment. The California CONCEPT is based on the long version of the Multivan launched in 2021, which makes it larger than its predecessor, the California 6.1.
The California Concept has grown: the extra length and width offer more living space, more comfort, safety and flexibility
The basic vehicle with two sliding doors creates a new three-zone concept with a kitchen that can be used from outside the vehicle, giving users the feeling of more living space
Significantly more flexible for everyday use and for camping thanks to more variable interior concept
New MQB technical platform enables use of eHybrid drive, improves ride comfort and offers more assist systems
Camper van functions can be controlled via a new tablet-style control unit, the “Cali on Tour” app on a smartphone or the infotainment system

Where is the solar panel? Come on!!! It's a beaute! Get solar and a 240 inverter for some true off grid capacity! Imagine getting a Fugly Ford Nugget when there's beauties like this out there.

Such a well designed vehicle. The double doors and split seats at the back do it for me.
Anyone who has really camped at least once will tell you that this isn't a successful model. It is too tiny to have a real comfort. Simply the roof in T7 and overall sizes are too small comparing to T6's. 1.8m person won't find it comfortable to live even a day in this car. The awning is too low and so is the tailgate with that big and clumsy chair case. Needless to mention the rest of it.
Looks great with all those bells and whistles but just not practical.
I am staying with my T6 forever until it becomes a relic.
It’s the ultimate for me, and my wife, saving up for one

We are waiting for the real successor of the VW T6.1 California..., the one on a Ford chassis ;) This thing, just like the ID.Buzz-based camper, is a dead end.

Main problem for me is the lack of storage space. I’d be happy with just more ground clearance, more power and 4x4, everything else I can put inside myself. Except for the bed on the roof, which is nice.
They should also make overland edition!
If these actually hit the US market within a couple months there'll be A/M liftkits and hitches available
The seats in the back could certainly go, to make room for storage. Who want to sit back there?

@@tonyg3091 Maybe. But when I was a kid, we had a station wagon with seats facing backward, and we didn't really like it back there.
What prevents camper vans like this from having a flat rising roof instead the angled one? I would love to have an 8 ft ceiling in a larger area. I'm quite tall though. :)
Why not put airline 1class seats that convert to beds?

That'll be nice for a lone traveller or a couple but I can't see a young family getting all their stuff in there.

I'm hoping all the electrics run off the hybrid battery, and that there isn't a separate hybrid AND camping battery to charge.
How do you get into the bunk on the roof...?
You would think for £70k that there would be a ladder. There isn’t. You climb up using the drivers seat or whatever your feet can reach. Some may say this is iconic design!!
Certain features must stay the same as they've been for 50 years😂 folding/collapsable ladder sure would be a nice feature though

Everyone who has gone through a disaster should get one. A home just encourages one to be packrats also all the tools you need just to maintain a house so you can store all your tools and stuff. Too bad we can't stuff all our family history and heirlooms into a minivan. Very beautiful, but even as a Californian I get the branding.
Yes probably one of the best place for vanlife if only it was encouraged everywhere and sadly it is maybe doable but sometimes unfriendly Love that upper sleeper, looks so comfy to wake up somewhere breathing fresh air like Yosemite or in a Redwood forest or by the ocean on a drizzly day. Maybe just better parkups and conveniences and discouraging people from being litterbug passive aggressive lowlifes.
Wish that we placed priorities differently, not just on collecting stuff, but living a simpler, more communicative world.
Well good luck with that! I lost my home in wildfire and then lived for eight months in my freaking camper. When I finally moved back into my home my friends asked me if I wanted to go camping and I said no! 😂

It’s an overnighter at best, unless you want to tow a trailer ! No storage, looks awesome but ask anyone with a T4,T5,T5.1,T6,T6.1 who actual camp and they will tell you a holiday in this will be as frustrating as hell, totally impractical, !
Minimal, space for bedding, clothes or a porta potti!
More door for the mossies to come in !
