I struggled to take off and put back on the cover, thinking how the hell? This is the best video by far and saved me time and sweat and swearing. thanks!!
This was exactly what I needed. I've worked on my own cars for over 40 years and couldn't figure out how to remove the jigsaw puzzle of pieces that cover the battery. Open the roof halfway! Thank you!
I just used your video because my car has been sitting for 2yrs. I have been waiting on the recall work to be done, & they just finished it. I forgot the puzzle back there for the battery cover install. Thank you 😊
This video is so much appreciated, especially since I have this exact car, and the author is correct, there's no way to do it without following an exact sequence, in and out. Thanks again!
Glad it helped! That is the best way to do a battery on this BMW :) I am going to be giving away a smoke machine as well on my video release on the 23rd. Check it out if you want to enter :)
Many thanks for sharing these brilliant step-by-step instructions. I used long cable ties to keep the cables out of the way. This left sufficient clearance and both hands free to remove and insert the battery without needing to open the roof. I can see the benefit of doing it your way but was worried that it could result in a major inconvenience if something went wrong with the battery replacement.
Hi Chris, Very true. If something did go wrong the top could be stuck open. But I have done a lot like this with no issues. Smart to use zip ties! That's the worst part keeping everything out of the way.
Thanks alot very detailed step by step...I was just looking for a way to my battery to disconnect my negative terminal. Trying to change my screen and the two doors handle. It was discouraging to see all the steps you have to go through to get the battery of my E93.But this helped a lot!!
WOW! 🤯. Okay, now I know🤔! Thanks for the video great information. I had absolutely no clue about the vent valve? 😮. I guess that’s a good reason to keep them under the hood huh? 🤔 Great info! The trim alone takes a “course” to disassemble argh 😣. I just subbed, keep em coming especially the E93 “M” content! 😊
Excellent video. Perfect explanations and camera. Only the open roof need not be imho. Thanks a lot! My new battery is a Varta AGM 94Ah. Instead of the old Banner Running Bull AGM 90Ah. No reprogramming or "registration" needed if both are AGM and more or less the same capacity (according to BMW and battery dealer). Works perfectly.
Great video! I JUST finished putting in my second replacement battery (and also at one point had to do most steps to install battery tender terminals) so 3 battery maintenances and never thought to put the roof partially down to get better access, argh. Oh well, next time... probably going to keep this car yet another 7 years. E93 M3 FTW
Thank you very much my first convertible and when I saw the battery I almost got lost just staring at all the red cables as I never saw a battery like it and didn't have a clue what to touch.
Hi Miguel, Disconnecting the battery will lose stored data. If you just want to disconnect the battery only disconnect the negative. If you disconnect both you loose the feed to the fuses and if you had to jump from the jump terminal you would not he powering anything.
I have i short question; I'm planning to take the battery out to see if I have any water leaks. When the battery is out do I need to code or registering after connecting it back into the car?
@119Agent For the one that goes through the body, take the battery out and the bottom tray held on by torxes. Then put it back in place. For the top vent on the battery usually you can get in that spot. Hope this helps!
Couple of questions since I am planning to do this exact job on mine 1) if the side panels are off and only the battery needs to be removed, do we still need to roll up the top 3/4th or would the top on work? 2) Incase you aren’t buying an OEM battery, which one would you recommend - H7 with 850 CCA? 3) would the Antel app also code a new battery if the amp vary to 80 Amps instead of 90
Hello, Good questions. You can do the battery with the top closed but it is much easier to remove this heavy battery with the top open as shown. I usually stick with the same rating battery. The Ancel app can register a new battery but it cannot code for an upgrade. Keep in mind a larger battery may not fit in the hold down location. You don't want a loose battery as the internal plates can short through vibration or short a wire from rubbing. Best wishes with your install!
@@AskTheCarExperts thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I am planning to use BimmerCode to code and register the battery. I am just confused on the size of the battery I can fit in, given how tight the space is. Any idea if a 14inch battery would fit in?
I just dropped in my second Duralast H8-AGM. The last worked for EXACTLY 7 years, just like the OEM BMW battery, so I can personally recommend. Another programming option is Carly, but you might need to buy their proprietary dongle (they don't guarantee it will work otherwise) and some extra features like battery reset get pricey, but it's a great tool with a lot of customization options.
There is a lot of incorrect information out there on this topic. Battery registration on this model only tells the car the battery was replaced. It may effect charging strategy slightly but that is all. In my opinion there is no need to register a battery.
There is no security code for the radio in this car correct? Will be replacing the battery for a friend and don't want to leave him with another problem. Thanks
You can also do a short program to change to lead acid retrofit. Personally I wouldn't as I have seen several exploded and leaves a mess in the boot, in the normal boot location is good, on the side fender is a terrible location. But yeah, you'd be surprised how many batteries die, the problem is typical BMW owners hardly drive their cars or know that you need to let the car sleep as soon as the engine is off. Lock the door with the remote and if everything is working correctly and no control units not playing ball, should enter sleep mode in 15 minutes or less.
I have a single harness to a small black plug that branches off the positive wire. I have no idea where it goes. I can’t find a female connector anywhere.

It is an H8 AGM. A lot of manufacturers make that size. Most are $186 to $249. Champion, acdelco, interstate, duralast etc. $300 out the door for BMWs little labels is not too bad either , some people like to keep everything OEM and on this car I don’t blame them.
I have an 09 model, I stopped operating my top a long time ago, too risky. The car isn't worth the repairs if it breaks bad enough. My top got stuck down once, had to drive top down in the cold to the dealer. They kept my car all day, they couldn't figure out what was wrong. They were about to keep the car overnight, then they figured out what was wrong. Bad relay, cheap part but the labor killed me.

Do you have a video showing how to replace the battery?
This is the video for replacing the battery on a BMW E93 convertible.
do you have to hook up a battery maintainer and also how do you access the menu on the dash?
No, I do not like to use those. That keeps power live in the vehicle and creates a possible short and damage.

If you use a 3rd party battery, it will have a vent on both sides. The one on the negative side should be plugged or taped off.
Good to know!
Can you do a hard reset video?
Hello, Gabby. What type of reset are you trying to do? A hard reset on a car is often to disconnect the negative cable for 10 to 30 minutes.
Thanks so much.

Some cars have an extra wire that was used during the delivery process. If you do not have issue it it most likely unused.
