    i love the idea of using a 90mm fan for a mini pc. you get better cooling with less noise.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      Yeah I don't want the RGB nonsense but I've wondered why they insist on keeping the form factor, instead of just mounting a normal Noctua fan, letting you pick it, and having a taller stack. At least for people who are looking for either performance, quiet cooling or storage. This monstrosity shows how easy it would be. I'd love to see Beelinks GTR7 style take on this - an aluminium case, space for a fan, and just taller than their current offering with as much storage as they can offer. Maybe an intake fan and an errr... whatever you call the ones that push air out again, with the mini-PC in between? But you could offer the space and the ability to either put storage or a fan in it as well. Lots of options. They're being more creative than they have been but I'm yet to get thrilled. :)

      Not that this solution is perfect either.
      It uses a non-standard frame-less fan. (it looks similar to what is used on GPUs)
      The heatsink doesn't seem to use any heatpipes for even better cooling.
      The front side does not have exhaust vents, and is blocked.
      It's not exactly clear if this cools the DRAM and SSD on the underside adequately. (not that blower designs with negative air pressure were doing all that well here either)

    I do not understand why not a single Mini PC manufacturer doesn't just slap on a 80 90 100 120mm fan on top like this instead mostly opting for whiny laptop cooling. With clever ducting a singe fan could cool cpu gpu package as well as benefit bottom mounted ram and ssd..
    Being a proud father of an i5 2500k pc that I built just before my son was born which is now in dire need of replacing ( the pc not the kid ) I hád ordered the EM680 from Minisforum but learning of the voltage issue that causes the cpu and gpu to throttle down I returned it and am currently contemplating either the EM780 but the fact that this come with the same 65w psu as the EM680 does not give much confidence and the price premium over this and say the FEVM FA780 for léss performance and more noise ; it;s a good thing this 7840 package comes with an off switch for the RGB effects =}

  • @MangoTangoFox
    @MangoTangoFox 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    I LOVE how that looks. It being edge-lit instead of hub-lit, and ARGB instead of just one color, makes a big difference in making this work. So many other mini PCs are either just a blank grey/black box, or are incredibly overdesigned like a knock-off modern transformers toy. This is a vast improvement and can be showy or minimal with just a toggle of the RGB.

    These little PCs are such a perfect fit for RVs from both a power draw and space perspective. Plan on running one as my main work PC in my van and then firing my beefier PC when I want a bit more fidelity or need the performance for 3D/editing or my steam deck if I want to lounge or play outside. This will easily run on a modest solar setup. So exciting to be alive during this low power computer revolution!!!

    I have one of these that I purchased last year in 7735HS which was a lot cheaper. The only down side to this board is the power draw - if you add too many power drawing devices on the USB or a fan for example you may face issues. What's more there's only one USB4 port & the power port on the back can work with an USB-C PSU.

    The product website does not mention memory up to 5600. Is that information in the manual (I did see the speed shown in task manager) ? I have noticed that some versions, Beelink in particular, hard set the memory speed to 4800 and igpu's are much more sensitive to mem speeds. How much does the memory speed impact performance in these minis? That would also be very interesting content. I tried to compare results with other reviewers of the competing products (Daniel Owens and EVO Tech in particular) but nobody is running the same games at the same settings - you had Cyberpunk set to low and FSR2 to balanced and were getting respectable framerates in the 70's, while Mr. Owens set his tests to various settings, but the closest was game quality to medium with FSR2 Quality and he was showing averages of ~50fps. The temps on this device were definitely better but the BeeLink and Minisforum versions do not seem to be thermally challenged, just warmer (a noise comparison would definitely be great!) Also, thanks for the video! Always interesting.

      I got this same, bought 5600 ddr5 2x16Gb sticks and it just works. I think, for iGPU, ram speed is important.

      @@DS-pk4eh yeah, from my research, it seems to be hit or miss. Some models only allow 4800, such as the 6900HX variant, but the SER 6 7735 does limit it - which may be the one I was thinking of...but still, the giztop website does only show 4800.

      another consideration is memory and GPU allocation - I've read that 32GB system memory sets the GPU allocation to 4GB and 64 GB system memory sets the allocation to 8GB. a comparison of those two conditions would also be very interesting...

  • @catsspat

    Looks like the fan can't be replaced with a STANDARD fan of any kind. That's too bad.
    I'm still waiting for a mini-PC that will take STANDARD fan.
    My preference is 120x120x25mm, but others are acceptable also, like 92x92x25, 80x80x25, or possibly 15mm thin ones.
