I knew you would be stopped coming back into the UK. The first thought that flashed through my mind was "he's gonna get stopped" because I've just finished reading a book by Peter James who writes about Roy Grace a Brighton detective. He caught his man , a drug dealer no less, by sheer luck when his man was stopped coming back to Britain in a Ferrari full of cocaine and as yours is an exotic car it was inevitable you would look suspicious . Moral of the story. Travel to Paris and back in a Ford Focus.
I’m so glad you binned the BM off and took the AMG! I was stationed in Germany for 12 years and started off with the ferries but then started using the tunnel as it helped with the time to pop home for the weekend. I remember us getting stopped at French customs after we’d been on exercise in Canada for a month. We’d flown home and jumped straight in the car to go on leave. Well our dirty washing from Canada was in the boot and the customs officer was keen to look inside, my mate said you don’t want to do that which egged him on to look and as the zip was yanked open on the bag his face as the aroma hit him and his urges to be sick had us both laughing our heads off! Good times!
Excellent👍🏻, I just drove a 2.0Tdi Audi Q5 from Snowdonia to Frankfurt and back on 2 tankfuls of diesel. It’s got 322,000 miles on it (not Km’s). What a car 👌
Great video Matt. I have to admit I was looking forward to seeing how the big BMW went but that AMG……..spectacular!! Really loved the ending. Very dignified and respectful. Love your hard work and content, thank you 👏🍻
Your experience with that van pulling out from the side road in Paris is probably the mad concept in France of “priorité à droite” at junctions that don’t have give way (cedez le passage) signs. It means the vehicle on the right has priority even if the road on the right is what appears to be a side road. They even have this on some roundabouts which is even more exciting!
@@simonstock2526 What he means is there is still in some mainland European countries (not just France), an old rule where the vehicle joining the junction from the right has the right of way, even if you're already on the roundabout or main road. Keeps you on your toes 😄 Look into their eyes and work out their intentions. Helps to have been a biker
I used to travel across the continent, to Hungary every summer, even in the winter once or twice. We stopped in Paris and other places for a few days and I always thought that the ideal car to do this journey is something in the range of a 5/7 series BMW, E or S-Class/CLS, an A8, XJ or maybe a CL. Your LS would have been also a fine car, but people driving those never leave the country by car. I drove a few 3 series and C-Class across, but you need plenty o refinement and long/wide chassis to make long journeys comfortable. Also, driving around the Arc de Triomphe in a RHD car (or generally in Paris) that costs a small fortune is not fun. I spent a few months in France when I mainly drove a VW Caravelle, a gen 1 Range Rover and occasionally, a Daimler. The French love the latters. Maybe avoid the Range Rover in Paris, unless prepared for hitting scooters or having extensive dent removal and crash repair. My last few cars were mainly E-Class estates and I’d say, that is a good enough car to do continental journeys even better than it is a good enough car to do the shopping. An E350 CDI estate would be a marginally less dynamic car on this journey than any sports car. May as well, you could head south and make it a GT road trip! If you are travelling in the winter, take an Quattro or Allroad, A6 or A8. I was genuinely looking forward to see the 730d on that journey.
A dynamic car doesnt really help you on trips like that. Had a E63 S, but now with the S213 E220D im reaching way higher average speeds. Even in germany you dont need more than 200hp.
@@heinrichschmitz8964 200bhp is just about or below the range of the six cylinder diesel versions of the cars I listed. Now that 730 has a full tank, gonna have to use it! I lived in Paris for a little over a year, took my UK car with me. A Mercedes a very similar colour to yours except it was an SLK and it was diesel. Every single time I crossed back on the ferry, without fail, I got pulled into the little customs shed built for one. Honestly, why, every bloody time. Well done on making the detour to London, god bless you Ma’am

I drove to Paris 3 times from Macclesfield in both a 1991 Citroen BX estate TD (worth £200) and a Citroen ZX TD Estate worth £1500. No mishaps. Your BMW would have been perfect- just without the added deadlines! Please could you do another film with some 'risk'! ? :)
I think you're also required to have a yellow vest, a set of spare bulbs, and a disposable breathalyser So it's: - red triangle - yellow vest - spare bulb kit - disposable breathalyser - and probably spare tyre or repair kit/can.
Thanks for taking us along for your quick trip to Paris. Perfect ending to your video. I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw the resemblance to Geroge Clooney in Brother's Where Art Thou, Dapper Dan and all. And, given your acting career, we can indeed say you hit your marks in a way most TH-camr's just don't. Well done-- you've earned your success!; regardless of the suspicions your age and cars arouse at Customs.
Great Video just had the Gear box re built in my 2008 Disco 3 (192k) and done 3000 miles around Southern France and Northern Spain with my baby Daughters 23 and 26 !!!! She ran like a dream used an amazing ZF gearbox specialist in Liverpool called Birch Motors for the Job Euro tunnel there Ferry back Averaged about 32mpg which considering the miles and age of the car not bad. Love a Euro Road trip going to the Snow at Christmas next. Actually got all around Italy in 2019 before all the travel restrictions hit. Love the content you are getting better and better, when are you on the Box !!! Stay safe Good Luck.
I love Paris. I definitely wouldn't have taken your Merc there. Have you seen the dents on Parisian cars. The greatest respect for your London visit, for The Queen. Just a shame we could not see Nicole, your friend.
Look at the background in the start of this video. Just magnificent! I have to admit I thought you were going to try to go somewhere and back in a Range Rover initially which caused me to spew my cup of coffee all over my keyboard. I agree the finishing touch was tasteful. No one can do pomp and ceremony as good as the British.
I'm in Croatia near Dubrovnik now and I cannot believe what the locals are driving. The most common cars appear to be mark 2 and 3 golfs which aren't being treated like classic cars. These are daily drivers. Citroen zxs, numerous cars from the mid to late 90s as well as some brand new stuff. Just shows with a dry climate and warmer winters cars will last a long time.
Great vid, really enjoy your content, but had to laugh at 17:35 when you booted it, in the background a transit van was catching you up lol.....Very respectful ending ,thank you.

I know what you mean by the British border force, I think it’s a job requirement to hate your life in general before your allowed to be an immigration officer!
Even the German and Swiss aren’t that annoying👍🏼
Haha yes youre right
Was thinking Damm, I wanted to see the 7 series on the trip and was annoyed.
But the decision on your return to divert was a really respectful decision and perfect. Thank you.
Great video once again. I'm glad you are doing Road trips!
More to come!
@@HighPeakAutos lovely tribute to the Queen
Great to see you finished the video with paying your respects to her majesty may she rest in peace for all of Etternity.
Thanks. I hope so
Thought I was gonna be the only one dissapointed not to see you do the trip in the 730d😂
Thats the majority of us
You’re bloody hilarious and also the most relatable car reviewer here in my opinion…I also speak for the masses 😂
Thanks!
I reckon 1000 miles on one tank in the 730 was ambitious anyways ! Still - nice to go a road trip, just for the sake of going a road trip. Also liked the detour at the end…very respectful.
Matt, my friend, people have spoken! Looking forward to your BMW 730D trip, cheers!!
Hahaha so it seems!
@@HighPeakAutos yes, yes! Also, quite keen to see how will the car "behave", as I was seriously thinking to come and check that car to purchase it from you, as I really appreciate how you deal with the cars before you sell them!
Some might describe this as click bait
I didn’t realise I needed an Amg GT in my life… it’s an awesome car.
I’m going to start saving for the roadster model.
I'm pleasantly delighted by the last minute change to the AMG GT instead of the 7'er! Top Gear Aston DB9 to Montecarlo vibes!
I remember that video
I love a good road trip me, used to enjoy brecky on the ferry but as you say, train is a lot less messing around, i did my last 2 in 20 + year old mazda mx5,s loaded with tools, spares and enough food for a week.
nice touch at the end, RIP your majesty 😞.
great video Matthew , please do more of these and add more footage of the driving, great experience
Thanks, will do!
17:34 everytime you put your foot down. the van is gaining on you... :)
Great video. A touching tribute at the end too. Would love to see a long trip in the 7 series when you feel you can trust it!!
Thanks! Will do!
The interior doesn’t look at all dated which is quite an achievement! Great video! More please!
4 years since that rav4 video ???
Unbelievable how time has flown 😮
I checked, it was 2019 :)
@@HighPeakAutos crazy.
I’m the same age as you and have been watching you since the early Skoda superb review days ;)
Just actually sold my perfectly maintained high mileage w211 e220 facelift diesel over the weekend :( 430k km, and in the family since new.
Too expensive to insure & run an old diesel these days, especially with a company car
Well Matt, feeling a bit scammed you didn't take the 7 series, you may not have been so stressed about those French drivers prancing your baby. However, all credit to you for the end of the video and demonstrating respect for the Queen, its increased what I already had for yourself. Well done .
question about your range rover: have you tried putting your rear seats down and been able to sit in your normal position. my l405 autobiography with the executive seats makes me sit so far forward with all the seats flat
I've never sat back there so I cant help I'm afraid
I was going to take my 993, I changed my mind and I’m glad I did. Bumpers and just that in Paris
Nobody wanted to see the merc. Everyone wanted to see the big 7.
I'll have to do it again perhaps
This video is some of your best work to date Matt. Well done! 🍸
First video I’ve had to dislike of yours, felt a bit clickbait, would have been a more interesting video if you had gone in the old 7 series. Even if it had broken down.
Yeah fair enough but I didnt have time to waste - as it turned out, the football match was cancelled and the filming the following week was pushed back so I could've taken my time in the 730d
One of my absolute favourite TH-cam channels.
Another great video Matt, the 730d would’ve been interesting; but the AMG GTR was a much better watch and surely a much better driving experience for you.
A great tribute to Her Majesty at the end.
👍
Great vlog as normal and I've actually used that promo code on the hair products and got over £7 off my order , thankyou .
I think you're also required to have a yellow vest, a set of spare bulbs, and a disposable breathalyser So it's:
- red triangle
- yellow vest
- spare bulb kit
- disposable breathalyser
- and probably spare tyre or repair kit/can.
Can’t believe I’ve just watched a video about a AMG GT for 20 minutes but I enjoyed it. Well done😉
Don’t worry. I got the same Treatment when I traveled back alone in a 21 118i!
Drink your coffee when it has chance to cool down a little, it'll take the edge off it.👌AMG jel.
Thanks for watching
Not what I was expecting , disappointed were is the fun in that.
Best looking and sounding and reliable BMW 7 series I’ve seen lol. Brilliant vid mate
Great Video just had the Gear box re built in my 2008 Disco 3 (192k) and done 3000 miles around Southern France and Northern Spain with my baby Daughters 23 and 26 !!!! She ran like a dream used an amazing ZF gearbox specialist in Liverpool called Birch Motors for the Job Euro tunnel there Ferry back
Averaged about 32mpg which considering the miles and age of the car not bad.
I saw the date of this video and thought surely not. Then I saw the ending. Great trip great close. Thanks
Love the channel and would be great to see more trips to the continent. Touching tribute to the queen too.
Was not expecting the end. That was such a beautiful tribute.
Last year I drove my 2015 BMW 7 series from Winchester to Madrid doing 60mph with a full tank I was really impress
Impressive. Maybe that’s the idea for the next road trip
Thank you! You’re right 🇬🇧
I'm in Croatia near Dubrovnik now and I cannot believe what the locals are driving.
OMGoodness, just watched this for the first time... The Ending - respect.
🇬🇧
You made a wise choice. A possibly stranded 7 series in the middle of Paris while having to be on schedule seems like a double nightmare to me.
