    I’m surprised Henry hadn’t died of old age by the time the police got there at the speed that call operator was going.

    • @niebelangrik3358
      @niebelangrik3358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Nope. They checked security cameras and registry of the main gate so they knew of ever person who came and went for days. The perimeter fence/ boundary wall also had no alarms triggered before or after the time of the attack. Knowing how good some security estates are in South Africa will help you understand how difficult (but not impossible) it would be for an intruder to go unnoticed especially when thoroughly investigated. Other estates in SA... not so much.

      @genuineimitation8799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Dazza 85 It was never, ever proven he was on drugs. His toxicology the day of the murders was negative, for everything. Including alcohol. The prosecution was never able to substantiate the rumor beyond some guy named “Mark” who lived in a shack and picked out his picture, after it had been in the news. That’s literally it. His medical history showed zero evidence of drug use. Pathetic how easy it is to convince the populace of a lie. It’s actually terrifying how easy it is. Next time you want to jump on the bandwagon, stop and think “what if this was me? What if this was a loved one?” Is this how you’d want to be treated? Think you’ll never, ever have trouble with the law? Yeah, well, literally everyone who finds themselves there never thought it could ever happen to them. Funny how something like “innocent until proven guilty” and “beyond a reasonable doubt” are completely thrown out the window...until it’s you on the receiving end.

      If you see the photos of him from when the murders happen to the day of sentencing, there is a marked difference in his appearance. He lost a fair amount of weight and his eyes become more sallow and dark. It’s like seeing the life drain out of him. People point to this as proof of his guilt, but I question: what would happen to you, if you were under such extreme duress as watching your whole family die, then looking at life in prison for something you didn’t do? What if...he IS innocent? The investigation was a joke. Only 35% of this alleged “fortress like fence” was actually covered by CCTV. They had had numerous robberies in that community in the months leading up to the murders. There was an alarm that went off the night of the murders, with the security dismissing it and resetting it. The family often kept the back door unlocked for the domestic staff. Moreover, the supposed drug abuse was NEVER proven. It all stems from some guy living in a shack that picked out Henri’s picture AFTER the murders were reported in the news. My point is, I don’t think his guilt was proven beyond a reasonable doubt. People point to his affect on the emergency call. Well, I know people like this, who keep a lot of emotion inside. Who act cool but are not inside. Not that they’re bottling things up, they’re just not hyper-emotional. Not everyone is the same. And I despise people who say “that’s not what I would do”. How do you know? I honestly have no idea how I’d react in such a situation. Some people emotionally shut down. I’ve heard from many survivors that they don’t have an emotional response until hours, sometimes days after. There’s a sense of it all being so unreal.
      I’m not saying he didn’t do it. But there’s a lot of unanswered questions and way too much conjecture to say he absolutely did.

It’s frightening just how easy it is to be convicted of a crime with little evidence. You are right. It’s not the prosecution that needs to prove it’s case, it’s the defense that must prove their clients innocence.

    • @genuineimitation8799
      @genuineimitation8799 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      avithemostill Maybe he’s telling the truth. Home invasions, where murder is THE only motive, are not in any way out of the ordinary for SA. It’s also not uncommon, at all, for the murder weapon to come from the home, but in Henri’s case, it was never proven. They had two witnesses that testified in this regard: Marli’s boyfriend who said he saw a black headed axe outside by their fire pit and the domestic worker that said she saw a similar one in the pantry. She stated, clearly, that she could not say it was THE SAME AXE, only that it looked similar. I wonder how many green headed (not black), wooden handled axes are in homes all across SA right now. Probably a lot. I could probably go to Home Depot right now and buy something similar. I also find it interesting that his father had over 25 businesses, dealing in hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars, his brother (Martin’s) said he was “going to change SA”. Well, perhaps there are those who don’t want SA to change, or to change the way Martin intended. There’s a ridiculous amount of corruption in both the SA government and police force. It’s going through massive issues right now, there are farm massacres constantly there. I think there’s a possibility the Van Breda’s were targeted. The estate was not anywhere near as “impenetrable” as the prosecution stated. The defense had very reasonable, if not compelling, testimony and evidence to the contrary. There’s a lot to this case that makes it not so cut and dry. Western justice relies on two absolutely crucial edicts, one: INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty (not guilty by the court of public opinion until proven innocent, an impossibility for anyone) and two: guilty beyond a REASONABLE doubt. In other words, the accused is innocent until and unless the state can PROVE GUILT beyond any reasonable doubt. I do not think the state of SA did this by any stretch. They never did state a motive. Never even brought it up. Why didn’t the state posit drug abuse? Because they couldn’t prove it. No evidence for it at all. Why didn’t they state money as a motivation? Because Henri wasn’t going to inherit that money anyway. This according to the family, family friends and the lawyer representing the estate. That money went into a trust. It wasn’t like he was magically going to get millions. Not at all. So, the fact that he was sober at the time of the murders (proven), he had no monetary motive (provable) and to this day has never said a negative thing about any of his family speaks volumes. He’s not psychopathic (proven) and has no history of violence. All this, plus so much more, leads me to believe he is likely innocent of this crime.
