SNSD really paved the way. Yuri was the first kpop idol to have a fancam and Yoona was the first idol with the position visual. Almost every current kpop idols reason for becoming an idol was because of Girls Generation. Korea officially named them The Nation's Girl Group. Icons. Tiffany and Jessica are both Americans. And Jessica left in 2014 and its one of kpop's biggest mysteries why bc they never gave a reason why. Also Jessica has a sister named Krystal who is in the group f(x) another historical iconic group.
And I heard Yoona actually started the “Center” position as well?

@@pokiedokie24 If I remember correctly, Wonder Girls also had the center position and it was given to Min Sunye. And WG debuted in Feb 2007 while SNSD debuted in August 2007. Also if we're talking about when the center position existed in an idol group in its history then AKB48 of Jpop who debuted in 2005 would take that title. AKB48's first center was Minami "Takamina" Takahashi who later on became a legendary leader of Jpop while Atsuko "Acchan" Maeda became the legendary center of that group. And they're both a member of the so-called AKB48's Kami7. They were the reason why SNSD couldn't take the #1 Girl Group in Japan at that time.
Gee inspired a lot of girls to join Kpop also fun fact their outfits were so iconic they started a new wave of wearing colored jeans. SNSD made the base to kpop and girl groups so yeah! Gee is iconic Elizabeth was right!

Thanks to GG we have photocards, their album Oh was the first one to have them and it became a craze and of course now a staple of Kpop.
They invented the center position with Yoona.
To this day the most tuned into live music show from a girl group was GG doing Genie on top of a mother fucking skyscraper rooftop in Seoul being filmed by a helicopter.
The first girl group to be called the nations girl group
Many kpop companies require trainees to learn Into the New World and it's probably one of the most covered songs by gg's especially rookie ones. It’s actually also the official anthem for many LGBTQ+ SK movements, because of the lyrics. It’s played at all pride events and marches and SNSD are very aware that the community has chosen their song and have nothing but support for it. When asked at a news station what she thought about that song being used for marches and protest Tiffany said that she felt honored.
And so much more. From Madison square garden to creating what is now the model of modern kpop girl groups followed by all.
If you're looking to get into them of course the music but ALSO a quick sure fire way to understand why they are so loved.... variety shows. They are called the queens of variety, and truly are one of the few groups out there who I can say without an ounce of bias can make anyone laugh without you even knowing who they are. They always get double the variety show episodes because they can't seem to edit it down cause they are so entertaining.
I love their running man episodes. It could be a good show to start getting to know them
Also another fun fact: Taeyeon hated all of their title tracks except for Run Devil Run lol.

There actually wasn’t a lot of girl groups active back when SNSD debuted bc the first gen groups were disbanding and the 2nd gen was OVERRUN with boy groups. They actually got a lot of hate for being female idols that were close to other male idols at the time.
But after they debuted they became so successful so quickly that many girl groups started to debut after about 2 years of them being active.
One the few groups that could go up against a boy group and win!

Into The New World is played in Korea in LGBTQ+ parades
Gee is indeed THE legendary song. It's the first K-pop MV to reach 100M views when streaming wasn't that accesible yet to everyone and youtube is still not that big. It had 9 consecutive weeks of wins, 14 in total with less music shows than today. It was released in January and was last awarded in December. It was named as Melon's Song of the Decade despite being released in 2009, the end of a decade. It's one of the songs that catapulted Kpop to it's mainstream position worldwide. SNSD or Sonyeo Shidae (Girls' Generation) is one of the first Kpop groups who broke and introduced Kpop to the west. Billboard introduced the Kpop chart and they were the cover at their website's Kpop column. So many historic things. Prepare for a wild ride. 💗
There's a reason why Into The New World is considered the "Korean National Anthem", it's easily one of the most iconic debuts of all time from any girl group.

Y'all got it so right when u said the hook for ITNW n Gee just seems iconic. 99% of girl groups in the game right now probably have done a cover of ITNW at some point in their career. SNSD is an acronym for their Korean name, which is translated to Girls’ Generation
SNSD = so nyuh shi dae
Although there were numerous ships to emerge from SNSD, "Taeny" (Taeyeon & Tiffany) will forever be the "THE ship". Tiffany was always the more shy, but Taeyeon would just come out and call Tiffany her wife. Brave stuff in Korea 15 years ago.

what a nostalgic vibe, gee was my first kpop song ever that i heard for the first time when i was 8 😭 i miss those times
so the sone-ification of liz and mari begins... thank you, thank you, thank you. i hope you continue going thru their mvs bc -whew- it is quite a ride! sooooo many hits. plus their japanese discography.... to this day it cannot be topped. & their live performances are unlike any other! plus, they are chaos incarnate. never have i watched a more entertaining group of people.
i really can't say enough good things about these women. the road for them was not an easy one. debuting when boy groups were incredibly popular and people were skeptical of a girl group with so many members, but with a little time and so much hard work, they, along with groups like wonder girls, 2ne1, etc., expanded the reach of kpop and really did turn it into a girls' generation that's continuing on today. AND they're still together going strong, albeit as 8 now, butf it's really such a gift to watch everything back and then to see all 9 of them today doing what they love to do individually and absolutely excelling!
when it comes to snsd, my emotions just well up. they really are a one of a kind, once in lifetime group. once you really get to know them, i think you'll feel the same way too.
i'm a fan of SNSD for more than a decade now, and I can say that I enjoyed watching you two react to them. Makes me see them in a different view. Specifically Taeyeon's adlib at the end of Genie made me think "Wow! Maybe there IS something to this "Kpop" thing..."

SoNyuhShiDae was the group that got me into K-pop from their show Hello Baby- and Sunny & Yuri being on Invincible Youth~ it was so rare to see a kpop group be comfortable w/ their fans shipping them together & they seem like really genuine friends outside of the music business. As they've grown, they've also shown support for LGBTQ+ community o(^___^)o Into the New World is classic ~ my personal favorites are Run Devil Run, Soul, Green Light, Talk Talk, All Night and... Hoot is a guilty pleasure ;^p it just cracks me up, ahahahaha~ and any of their Japanese releases sung live in concert - it just hits different.

@@shawnnicolo7445 some SONES would say it's because Sica is called the Ice princess, so Yuri is her prince, hence the Royal Couple, but they are also part of Royal Family. That is a group of first big ships: Taeny, Yulsic, Yoonhyun and Soosun. Only family that is big enough to rival Royal is the Ace family: Jeti, Yoonyul, Sunyeon and SeOT9. Still Royal family is the most popular among SONES. Hope this helps!
I'm surprised to hear that this is your first 2nd Gen group you're checking out! Great choice, though!
One reason to stan these ladies, aside from the MANY accomplishments other comments have mentioned is that, from what I've seen on your video playlist, just about EVERY girl group you both like or have checked out have cited Girls' Generation as the main inspiration for them as a group! Plus, most of them have at least one member that admits to being a true fan.
A few examples:
-Sunmi (the OG fangirl (Taeyeon's her bae too 😂))
-Moonbyul (cited Taeyeon (also HER bae) as the path she followed to becoming a successful idol, and burst into tears meeting her on Amazing Saturday (a must watch!))
-Dami (A huge fan that got Sunny's signature on a recent show)
-SuA (Taeyeon's also her bae. Yeah, Taeyeon's everyone's bae, basically.)
-Most of Twice (pre-debut Momo was on a Girls' Generation Japanese TV special called Boom The K-pop saying how cool they are. Not long after, she auditioned for JYP. Sana auditioned with Girls' Generation's song Mr. Taxi (which she cringes at today. 😂😂😂 Just type "Sana Mr taxi") Nayeon and Chaeyoung are also notable fangirls. Basically most of Twice. 😂😂😂)
-Chaeryeong (all of Itzy actually, but Chaeryeong is the president of the Girls' Generation fandom in JYP. She a HARD stan!)
-RV's Wendy and Yeri (I'm just imagining how jealous Yeri was when Wendy got to be in GOT the beat...😂😂😂)
-aespa's Karina and Winter (Karina and Yeri are battling it out for the presidency of the Girls' Generation fandom in SM. And, yep...Taeyeon's Winter's bae too.)

- The guy on Kissing You MV is Donghae from Super Junior, they used to do a lot of collabs and SM paired the members of both groups a lot. There was a rumor around that time that Jessica and Hae were dating
- The guy on Gee MV is Minho from SHINee
- Tiffany’s “DJ put it back on” was most iconic line of that time! Gee and Genie in itself were ICONIC songs

SONE, pronounced like "sowon", means "wish" in Korean, and also means Soshi (the group's nickname) is one and that we are one with Soshi 😊
As people, they are absolutely BONKERS lol they are chaos incarnate. Quite the characters, another reason they're so loved. As someone mentioned Seohyun plays a lesbian in Hello Dracula LOVE THAT FOR US, they're very supportive of the community (their All Night mv has drag queens, Tiffany wrote a piece for Pride Month, etc etc). And shipping wise, Taeny (Taeyeon and Tiffany) is TOP TIER GOLD STANDARD. Taeyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung tend to be the gay's favorites imo lol but y'all should definitely check some Taeny videos out! 👀
I was so excited to see this reaction! Gee was my first kpop song and SNSD my first group to love and I have enjoyed y'alls thoughts on the songs as fresh listeners.
They have a song called Girls Generation (which is a cover and how their group name was chosen), in the MV the members wear sweaters with their names on it, would be a good way to learn who is who but y'all got so many right already! :D
The first listen to rankings were mixed but you both had one of their biggest hits at the top, like you guessed tho, there is no bad song lol. "Into the new World" is also like mandatory learning for all girl groups and is also played at many Pride events as it's about pushing through tough roads and finding your own path together.
FINALLY! I was a SONE(SNSD stan) back then during their prime. I can say 99.45% of all GGs now are influenced by SNSD one way or another. They surpassed queens and now considered deities in KPOP
Trivia: Chaeryeong from ITZY is 4th Gen’s biggest SONE. She almost died when she saw Taeyeon in an award show.
SNSD is my ultimate group since 2009. There're so many reasons why I like them this much. They're talented, funny, smart, supportive, humble...
They're known for their support for LGBTQ+ community since their debut. (I still clearly remember when Taeyeon was fighting with homophobics)
Into The New World: used in pride parades (It's like an anthem) and so many protests. Girl group members says this song is their final homework before debut.
Kissing You: actually this is one of my least favourite title tracks from them. Hyoyeon said she's wondering why do they have to do push up, sit up everyday but end up dancing cutely with lollipop. But iconic tho
Gee: the song that introduced me to Girls' Generation. That song was very popular internationally. Taeyeon doesn't like it but this song made them Nation's Girl Group.
Genie: My favourite title track from them. It's so catchy. I mean I'm not even straight but everyday I randomly say 'I'm genie for you boy'.
I don't like the lyrics of most of their songs. Especially "Oh!" but that doesn't change the fact that I LOVE that song.

The reason many girl groups quote SNSD as their role models is because GG was a chamaleon back then, every comeback was different and they all tried different sound and concepts (which evolved till what it‘s today's standard).
2nd gen was really different and a little bit ridiculous, which added a lot of fun to K-pop in a very endearing way.

A little history about GG (upto where u got with their songs) Into the new world with time became such a iconic debut, that now its considered like a initiation , every new girl group has to do a cover of it when they debut, after that up until Gee the group were fairly slept on, Gee tho broke a bunch of records and put GG on the map big time, they were dubbed then "The nations girl group" a title that started with them and they held up until 2017 (their 10 year anniversary, after that beeing past down to Twice) our final spot on this wayback trip is Genie , the white uniforms they wear in that video became a huge staple in how people oversees paid homage to kpop in different shows ,video games, etc. Its a iconic outfit ... Girls Generation really invented kpop as we know it today , a lot of the rules in kpop were set by their company (like the trainee period and almost everything else like the set of skills a idol has to have) and GG were one of the first groups who debuted under the idol formula we have today , so they were a experiment and at the same time trend setters for years to come
PS: that why u see all these new idols saying they are big GG fans , cuz at the time GG were making history these idols were very young impressionable girls , and seeing such good role models on tv back in 2010 surely left a mark on them

Gee made them the national girl group in South Korea and made them a household name, it's like all girl groups has to cover either Gee or ITNW for them to get accepted.
Overall, they are the only girl group that have all members individually successful, no member was left out. LEGENDARY.

In case anyone hasn't yet, SNSD is the acronym for the Korean of 소녀시대 (So Nyeo Si De) and the translation into English is Girls' Generation. That SN part comes up a lot, too, because sonyeo (소녀) means girl. So like WJSN and GWSN, the SN in both of those is the same one from SNSD. "I Got A Boy" is probably their best song imo. Not a fan of their style of music, but that song stood out to me when it first came out and it's a pretty good listen.
Into the New World has become something of an important song in Korea. It’s kind of anthemic to it’s core, and it’s message of a challenging but brighter future led by love in spite of difficult times right now, has made it a protest song for various progressive causes in South Korea. It started with a student protest at a womens college in 2016, and has been used during SK’s presidential impeachment, gay pride parades, and after the SK courts lifted the anti abortion ban. Hell, it was even used in a pro democracy protest in *Thailand*.

i'm a 3rd gen child too and starting listening to GG recently, my favorite musics are Gee, The Boys, Mr. Mr. and Run Devil Run, but I recongnized Genius outfit and moves instantly. There's also Dreams Come True, that we onces know for the special stage with RV (and now aespa's version). I really wanna watch their variaty shows 'cause they are very famous too!
And also one thing that I learned: why are we talking about Avril Lavigne not aging while Choi Sooyoung exists????

Into the New World is such an iconic song, sones cry over it lol. its also used very often in protests and during their LGBT walks/events cuz of the lyrics. Gee broke records and was actually the song that kick started them into being korea's national girl group, we can compare it to twice's cheer up era and how they became the new national girl group :)). 2nd gen choreo usually didnt go as hard, sure sometimes ull see it especially w/ boy grps, but in the earlier days they wanted to create choreos tht were public friendly, where anyone can do it. Gee also did tht w/ the crab dance. dozens of celebs, hosts, and other idols would dance to it. they also made neon skinny jeans blow up lol. it also won music award shows for 9 weeks! after that it was almost a hit each comeback, Genie right after Gee was wgat TT was to Cheer Up.
snsd along w/ a few other 2nd gen girl grps made 3rd ggs debut by the dozens, there werent many girl grps tht got popular until grps like snsd, 2ne1, kara, and wonder girls. snsd was also the first girl grp to win artist of the year after all the yrs of it being male artists and won it 3 times in a row! ill stop rambling, but i really recommend listening to their japanese discography! no one did it like them, they also blew up in japan.
edit: one last thing, snsd started the whole photocard in album n collecting them in 2010 with their 2nd full album "Oh!"

Snsd was the first kpop band I watched just randomly on TH-cam! I remember all the taeny fanship vids I used to binge where it was literally just a slowed down version of them glancing at each other 😂 We were sucking up micro crumbs back then with how conservative things were. There are definitely some moments where you can really feel how important they are to one another though, if you guys are ever interested in doing a deep dive!

I’ve recently started listening to GG and love their earlier pop sound as you’re right..it’s so nostalgic! But I also vibe a lot with their not cute sound like Lil Touch, The Boys, I Got A Boy, Catch Me If You Can, You Think etc. I think it just shows their versatility as artists and makes me wish I was into Kpop when they were active.

Also, I think it's interesting that you mention that Gee (and their previous songs?) doesn't really sound like something you've heard before, because that was what K-pop was like in the 2nd generation. It was _influenced_ by the western music market, but it was still like 70% Korean sensibilities. That was honestly also one of the reasons I started to like it, there was this whole new world of music that I hadn't heard before. Or, it was familiar enough to not be off putting, but "weird" enough to be intriguing.
I feel like modern K-pop is more directed by the western market now, so the music has lost some of that "Korean Weirdness" (No offense) because they want the music to translate well to other parts of the world. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that this happened, but it IS a noticeable differece between the "generations", and sometimes I'll miss the really "weird" concepts, like what Orange Caramel or early T-ara did. I feel like some older idols still keep it alive - Sunmi for instance is still wonderfully "weird" - but as a k-pop dinosaur I sometimes think it's a shame that those concepts are fewer and farther between in the 4th gen.

Same. The ridiculousness of 2nd Gen Kpop can't ever be topped and the way they embraced everything, That made the whole gere endearing, unique and interesting at the same time. No mandatory rap verses, no weird or half drops in their choruses, no over the top choreographys that you had to practice for over a month to get it right. Just simple, eye-catchy and ear-wormy catchy kpop songs.

After that, they being to be more focused on solo careers.
They managed to make it past the "7-year curse", and they'll be celebrating their 15th anniversary, this year on August 5th. (Their debut day).

This was when kpop started expanding. This era marked the beginning of the “Hallyu Wave” beginning in Asia and eventually extending to other parts of the world.

it's so cool how you have different #1 in your respective rankings and they were gee and genie. so gee is actually what made them a BOOM boom in the idol industry. although they were doing well prior that, gee just took their popularity to a whole new level. and after gee, they released genie and that kinda cemented their place in the industry. like if gee was a massive success, genie was there to prove to the public that they were versatile as an idol group. so these eras for them, which was in 2009, was like a year of immense wave of new fans.
and i've read this somewhere in youtube that because of the great success of these two titles, fans like to say "you're either a gee fan or you're a genie fan" because of how the other is cutesy or innocent-esque while the other gives more of a mature appeal.

I did discover 2NE1 as the competitors to SNSD, and I did like them too, but not as much as SNSD as they were too much like the American music I was trying to escape from-of course that made them more popular with some Americans.

How to even begin to explain the impact of Girls Generation?
- SNSD is the romanization of their name in Korean 소녀시대 (So Nyo (Girl) Shi De (Generation)).
- The fact that you hear GFRIEND in one song and LOONA in the next one, is not a coincidence. The reason why they were named Girls' Generation was for them to inspire a generation of girl groups, at the time of their debut, KPOP was dominated by boy groups. Well, they were EXTREMELY successful in that quest, they became the blue print and role model for new girl groups up to this day. We enjoy so many wonderful and powerful girl groups today, partly because of their influence.
- They are were given the title "Nation's Girl Group" by the South Korean government, although its been also attributed by the media to newer groups, they are still the only ones to have received it by the Blue House.
- Into The New World is very iconic. Because of it's inspiring lyrics, it is still used in the country for political rallies, the pride parade, even at the border with North Korea. It is also the song and dance every idol trainee has to master for debut, so every single female idol knows the choreo and lyrics to Into The New World.
- You were right when saying that GEE topped charts. Currently it is still the only song to have won #1 on a public broadcast music show for 9 weeks straight. It was named the most influential Kpop song of the 2010's, although it was released in 2009.
- SNSD was one of the first kpop girl groups to have LGBTQ+ representation in their videos by including drag queens in several.
- They were the first at A LOT of things that today make Kpop unique. For example, have you heard of album photocards? Well without SNSD we wouldn't have those today.
- Every member of SNSD is a well respected artist here in SK, they all have extremely well established careers apart from the group. It is hard to find groups were every single member is as successful solo as in the group.
- They were the first Kpop Girl Group so sell 1 million copies of a single album. They had 5 out of the 10 best selling girl group tours worldwide, along with TLC, Spice Girls and Destiny's Child.
