    Otto refused to let the king go to Dragonstone because he knew they would have reconciled. He doesn't want that, on the contrary - he wants Daemon to declare war and break with his brother because then he is rid of him and has more influence. Rhaenyra thwarted his plans, his look at her is very telling.

    I really like that you’re coming at Alicent from a fair stand-point. In these early episodes, too many people let their preconceived notion of book-Alicent inform how they viewed show-Alicent; as if they weren’t watching a 15-year old girl be manipulated by her own father.

      Is book Alicent that nasty? To be honest i understand that she was sent there by her father however the way she used the death of her Mother to bond wîth Viserys , the way she put the words to implie something in this episode before Viserys could make choice. I don't think Otto taught her that. She is not here by choice but she has some talents when it comes to deceiving people.

    On the issue of the crabfeeder: basically if you look at a world map, Dorne has an arm like structure sticking out into the narrow sea, as does Essos on the other coast. Between these are the stepstones. Now all trade between any port on the narrow sea and the cities beyond (Qarth, slaver’s bay, Volantis) must pass through these islands. This makes them super strategic but also infested with pirates cause it’s so easy to hide. Think of it as the same reason pirates loved the Caribbean so much: lots of small islands and lots of trade. Now 3 of the free cities (myr, lys, tyrosh) that sometimes fought each other and are on the eastern coast near the stepstones have teamed up to seize the stepstones from the pirates. They hired the crabfeeder to do so and he takes over. But now this 3 city alliance called the triarchy begins charging outrageous fees, which is why they captured corlys’s ships after he refused to pay

    Daemon is a drama queen, AND what he wants most in this world is the undivided attention of his brother (who took on a semi-parental role first after their mother died and later when their father died). He lost him to Aemma, and then the Throne, but he keeps hurting his chances of getting closer to his big brother with his volatile and juvenile behavior. Daemon puts his family first and just can't understand why his brother has to put the realm first.

    The thing about Otto is that sure he has a very Tywin energy, but also he's a second son of House Hightower. He's sassy and sneaky as you said but he's also there because of his wits and political capability. He was named by Jaehaerys, the Old King, the best king of Westeros history and a man that accepted no bs. Otto I'd say is definitely one of the better if not the best pure politician we've seen in GoT, being Hand for such a long time without the direct resources Tywin had and without resorting to gratuitous violence and the use of dudes like the Mountain anytime there's a problem. Hightowers got their power and influence by being patrons of the Faith but also of the science and the maesters after all. Hightowers are all about stability which is why Otto's antagonistic to Daemon and managed for Viserys to name Rhaenyra as queen, as Daemon is too chaotic and unpredictable. On the other hand, Daemon can't stand a non-Targaryen house sharing their power and he's also jealous of Otto for being Hand, in the same way Stannis hated Robert for naming Ned Hand instead of him. Otto and Daemon's rivalry is the core and soul of the future conflict.
    What he's doing with Alicent is not different from what Corlys is doing with Laena (and lots of others noble lords with their daughters, to be fair), with the difference that Otto is smart enough to send Alicent directly to comfort privately the king and hope for a more natural progression and the possibility of Viserys falling in love with her. Its more manipulative but also not that crazy and a bit necessary considering Alicent is the daughter of a second son. Hightowers are as if not more powerful than the Velaryons but Otto's direct family isn't, as the Hand title isn't hereditary. He has what he has and he is what he is and he must work with that.
    Of course none of this is good for Alicent. She's being pressured AF to be intimate with her best friend's father and the stress is destroying her. Its nice that you understand this. She's not perfect but other reactors really have horrendous takes about her.
    Most of the houses aren't gone tho, they are just more prominent here. Velaryons were Stannis' bannermen but they aren't shown in GoT, Hightowers were still rulers of Oldtown and they are mentioned (Margaery's mother was a Hightower) and we see a dead Mallister when Robb, Catelyn and Talisa enter Harrenhal's courtyard for the first time.

    Those houses are not gone by Game of Thrones, all of them are there.
    The show just did not want to include them. Apart from Mallister, there was a mention of a Mallister captive at Harrenhall and I believe one guy was credited as Lord Lannister when they crowned Robb king.
    Hightowers, Velaryons are all there as well in the books, where the Hightowers are chilling out the war in oldtown and Velaryons are fighting for Stannis.

    I've got to defend some of the GoT & HoT D fans and reactors who, imo, are being unfairly criticized for their perceived "hatred" or "biases" toward Alicent, especially at this point in the show.
    Disclaimer: Yes; this comment here is purely anecdotal on my part.
    With that being said, from what I've observed, at this point in the show (this particular episode), most fans and reactors are overwhelming empathetic and even like Alicent. What they don't like is that Alicent never told Rhaenyra, her best friend, that she was regularly visiting Rhaenyra's dad and having "conversations" with him that Alicent knew was leading her to be betrothed with Viserys. Both Alicent and Viserys had multiple opportunities to tell Rhaenyra what was going on, and they both didn't. Up to this point, that is what seems to bother most people about Alicent. I don't particularly feel that is wrong for those people to have those qualms about Alicent. Again, they empathize and like Alicent; they just don't like how she didn't give Rhaenyra fair warning about what was going on.

    It's so frustrating watching ppl blame Otto for "pImping out his daughter" when pretty much every noble marriage in Westeros was arranged. What other choice did he have? Like yeah, Otto is guilty of finding the best prospect for his daughter instead of marrying her off to a fisherman lol. That would be the duty of any man in a medieval feudal monarchy. Rhaenyra's position gave her the security to do whatever tf she wanted. Others like Alicent didn't have that luxury. "It's Otto's fault he married his daughter to the king cause the king's daughter might get jealous & paranoid" is not the ownage of Otto ppl think it is. It speaks more about the character of the daughter. Mfs have no understanding of basic politics blaming Otto for everything, thinking it would be sunshine & daisies if Viserys married Laena as if Corlys didn't spend his whole life complaining about the Great Council stealing his wife's throne. You switch Otto with the head of any ambitious noble house and the outcome is the same. The issue wasn't Otto or Corlys or anyone. It was a weak king making a bold & unpopular decision that he had no power to enforce.

      @tbakhalid4781 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In favour of Valyrians (at least from Rhaenys’s side) I’d say that they were doing it mostly for duty while Hightowers were simply being ambitious. The merge of Valyrians and Targaryens would’ve put stop to any threat that was trying to get in their ways. Viserys wouldn’t have to bed Laena for 2-3 years so he could mourn his wife all he wanted during that time and he could also teach Rhaenyra about the realm.

    • @andyrobin7196
      @andyrobin7196 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tbakhalid4781 Corlys is extremely ambitious, that's like his defining trait. His wife was denied the throne so he wants his grandson to sit on it instead. Rhaenys missed out on sitting it herself, Im sure she would want her grandchild to sit on it too, even if she doesnt like marrying off her daughter so young, she was still encouraging the king to do it. I dont think there's anything wrong with them (or Otto) being ambitious though. Every lord and lady in westeros would want their child/line on the throne.

    "All of these Houses are gone by the time of Game of Thrones." Or rather the directors cut their involvement out because it was just so many characters. But they probably should have kept some.
    The Mallisters of Seaguard for example and the Crakehalls are important parts of Tywins war against the Riverlands. The Mallisters were vassals of House Tully and their premier naval force.
    And the Crakehalls were some of the most important knights of the West. One of them Lyle Crakehall called the Strongboar was such a dangerous Knight that Jaime thought he was one of the strongest men alive at that point. He was one of the men involved in the siege of Riverrun if I'm remembering right.

      Alicent might have hoped to seal the deal (or Otto might have hoped that she would), but I doubt very much that Viserys did. Viserys is quite aware of whose daughter Alicent is; he's watched her grow up; and so far, he wasn't ready to marry anyone. I don't think he would have offered for Alicent (or anyone) if little Laena hadn't been shoved at him and Rhaenyra hadn't gone flying into possible danger at Dragonstone (bringing home to Viserys the burden of political pressure to marry again and the problem of what could have happened if Daemon had hurt or killed Viserys' only child). Viserys realized that he needed a new wife so he would not be bombarded with pressure to marry very young girls and could father a 'spare' heir in case Rhaenyra did not survive or could not have children.

    Always love your reactions and you're always so beautiful to look at, I want you to post a reaction without any makeup sometime, because I know you're also beautiful without it. Hopefully people don't attack me for this comment I'm just speaking my truth is all 😂

    10:58 - oh, she's just trying to convince herself and others that the only reason she was passed over in succession is because she's a woman. In reality, her claim was one of two "finalists". If the men of the realm were so anti-women, her claim wouldn't even be heard, not given 50% change of getting the crown. And Rheanyra's appointment as heir wouldn't even be considered.

      I dont know if she's actually wrong though, Westeros is very patriarchal. The show is it's own thing but in the book she was immediately dismissed as a candidate because of her gender (as was her eldest child Leana), the final vote was between Viserys and her young son Laenor but the lords felt the throne shouldnt even be able to pass through a woman to her male child (they voted more than 20 to 1 in favour of Viserys). The lords of Westeros really did not want to be ruled by a woman, which gives some credibility to the Green's position later in the season.

      @@andyrobin7196 If they had shown that kinda of heir selection, then I would agree with what she is saying. But even then, there were female rules in Westeros: Dorne and the Vale. So women in power is not THAT unbearable for the people.

    I truly must be the only person who hated that they used the same music for the intro. Felt super lazy to me, especially when the Targaryens had a theme music in GoT

    the scenes with Laena made me so uncomfortable !!! more than any scene from hotd like AAAA
    Also people started hated Alicent during this episode ??? But like .. hello? She has no choice and she's just a teenager, she's clearly feeling terrible... why would people blame her when the story is literally about women not having a choice in their own life... She already has to marry a man twice her age, who's also the father of her best friend, and she knows she might lose her only friend... actually in episode 1 it looks like Rhaenyra might be there the person she loves most in the world
    like stop coming for my girl!!! glad to see you having her back

    I really don’t get how people think daemon would hurt his brother or his niece lol yes he’s a rogue but he does love his family and rhaenyra knew he wouldn’t hurt her because of the relationship they have. Otto just tells the king what he wants because he hates daemon. Also the openin theme shows you the characters and they sigil. Rhaenyra sigil is daemon necklace he gave her so that let you know how important the relationship they have is.
