Crimea has not always been russian. For most of its history it was not russian at all. The guest’s knowledge level is weak on a number of points.
The “ West” is clearly and visibly playing ball with Russia. The actions are always very thought out, the armament provided ( when provided);is under conditions etc etc etc.
The question to be made is, Why? What’s the grand game? Is it because the West sees a war with China and Russia would be, finally, the one to come and save the day like it did in the Second World War?
To allow Russia to keep the Ukrainian territories it now occupies is a slap in the face of the Law abiding countries, a death sentence to the bulk of International Laws under which most of the world (still) follows and an incentive for more free takers advance over their less strong neighbors.

You're correct, but it's even more strategicly important to Russia, and it will be incredibly difficult to retake if possible. It's famously difficult even.
Unfortunately there is absolutely no way ukraine takes Crimea back, they don't have the weapons, men or capability to do so, russia took it because ukraine didn't even put up a fight, but look into the history of battles for Crimea, they are devastating, especially for the attacker.

This lovely gentleman has a vague understanding of Ukraine and its history. He doesn’t know basic geography either. Crimea historically was Tatar, and changed hands multiple times. Briefly it was incorporated into Soviet Union , but it’s always known to have been Ukrainian rather than Russian.

@VDD The vote on Ukraine aid happened because Mike Johnson was threatened with losing his position as Speaker of the House and also that Donald Trump realized that making a lot of noise about continuing to block aid was a liability to him as many or most Americans do support Ukraine. It would be nice to think that citizens directly affected Johnson's decision but I think the things I mentioned had much more impact.

Unbelievable he legitimizes the propoganda that the people of Donbas were persecuted by the "Kiev" government. The only reasons I've heard from Ukranian traitors for wishing to be independent or russian is they believed they would recieve a larger pension from russia than they did in Ukraine, and the anger felt towards Ukraine for abandoning the russian Victory Day drinking parties and parades. I heard one ordinary, if ambitious, lady talk about her belief that once Russia destroyed her home it would turn around and gift her with a nice apartment in Crimea, and perhaps she could even get away with collecting a pension from both Russia and Ukraine. And then once her old apartment was rebuilt by whichever country ended up with the territory, she could sell it! I wonder what she ended up with in the end.

Ukraine has limits on all NATO weapons in that they can't and don't use things like Stormshadow missiles on the actual territory of Russia proper. As Ukraine have never broken this promise in over two years of war now Germany's worries about the Taurus seem totally imaginary.
Germany's stated objection to Taurus is that it cannot be deployed without German people on the ground in Ukraine, and Chancellor Scholz doesn't want to risk Bundeswehr troops being killed.
@@andyl8055 It sounds like you don't have Scholtz's argument quite right. Scholtz isn't talking about boots on the ground as in German soldiers on the front lines but support troops to control Ukraine's use of the Taurus missiles.
Honestly Scholtz's argument is pretty much circular: Ukraine can't have the Taurus because there would have to be Germans along with and German advisors can't be in Ukraine when in reality Ukraine could operate the Taurus without German advisors.
What Scholtz is afraid of is the Taurus missiles being used to take down the Kerch bridge because it is the most effective western missile for the job and he fears Putin who would certainly blame Germany for taking down his precious bridge if the Taurus was used for that. purpose. The sticking point is that the Kerch bridge is questionable whether it is part of Crimea which makes it a valid target for western weapons or part of Russia which would mean it is not. As it is connected to Crimea which is part of Ukraine I'm sure the Ukrainian military would see the bridge as a valid target acceptable to use western weapons on and even the U.S. and other allies might as well. Scholtz is attempting to avoid the entire issue by simply not allowing Ukraine to have the Taurus.

Ya I hate when people say we're giving Ukraine way to much money. No we're not giving them enough. The 61 billion dollar aid bill from the US is only 0.3 percent of its gdp. If we really want Ukraine to beat Russia we have to up the anty and give them hundreds of billions of dollars. What we give them is to slow and not enough. Russia is spending 100 billion this year. What we give will help ukraine match Russia but imo it won't help them totally beat the Russians. Ukraine needs air power. If they controlled the skys things would be much different.

Over the last decade historians have realized that Chamberlain was actually playing a deep game of appeasing while he rebuilt Britain's military industrial complex.
If he had confronted Germany back in 34ish then Britain would have simply lost as it had no military to speak of due to war fatigue from World War i.

What a lot of people, including Trump, are failing to understand is that money for the Ukrainian war effort doesn't go directly to Ukraine. Most of it goes to American arms manufacturers. And that helps the American economy. It's only Trump's ties to Putin that are holding things up. Most real Republicans actually want to help Ukraine and wanted to all along.

As an ex Defence worker. We need a new type of Government in the UK who properly understands Lean Six Sigma, if you implement this Technique within the Treasury. It would be of benefit to the TAX Payer. A lot of Treasury Funded Companies use this methodology, especially in Defence Procurement. You have to buy goods that are fit for purpose. LSS is a good way of minimising waste. We should not have Ministers who don't understand modern day methods and progress or Assurance and Quality Assurance issues, or simple Business Management. I have personally seen the waste going on at Commons events, all be it a few years ago. We also need to RE-JOIN EUROPE to bolster our economy.

Why would they stop supporting this war? It's deindustrializing Europe and draining US arms. They get added bonus of cheap resources from Russia and gain a further competitive advantage. Extra bonus that Russia can only buy Chinese products and not European. China is crushing it with this war and I doubt they ever want it to end.
China supports NK though. It doesn't do it because it likes the countries, it just won't allow a western aligned government on its border. So it supports Russia out of fear of a Western style government.
You should thank China for the level of support it has given Russia, because the country with more manufacturing volume than rest of the world combined directly provide Russia with weapons, they'd cruise all the way to London.

The three memoranda were originally signed by three nuclear powers: Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. The US and UK are in NATO and are both among the 12 founding members.
China and France gave somewhat weaker individual assurances in separate documents.
They have no responsibilities, hence why they used a memorandum instead of a treaty. It was deliberately chosen to be a memo because they never wanted to have such responsibilities.

The U.S.A. with our nearly divided Congress cannot really ratify any treaty. There are many extremely important de facto treaties concerning the well-being of the entire world which haven't been ratified by our divided Congress. Despite their not being ratified, all presidents thereafter observed them so it has been pretty much a completely moot issue.

This man is a soft Kremlin stooge. In December 1991 both Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts voted 83% for Ukrainian independence. Crimea voted 53% for Ukrainian independence and 57% in Sebastopol. It is clear that Crimea and the other occupied territories wanted overwhelmingly to be Ukrainian and there is no evidence to suggest that that has changed. In fact, since Donbas men have been conscripted and sent to die in their tens of thousands in the war, they are probably as sick of the bloody Russians as the rest of Ukraine.

There is ample evidence that things have changed since Ukraine became an independent country in 1994. In 2014 after an armed overthrow government: three regions voted for independence (from Ukraine) and in a choice between Ukraine and Russia (no independence option) Crimea voted to (re)join Russia. After an eight year civil war; Russia "recognised" the 2014 independence referendums, then occupied them (in 2022) and the three regions subsequently voted to (re)join Russia.
As for the commentator, he doesn't seem to realize it was Boris Johnson of the UK (probably acting on American orders) that blocked peace negotiations (in Turkey), that led to the "special military operation" and it won't matter to Russia what the Western media want: the agreement in 2014 between Russia and Ukraine was, neutrality or war (and that's their business). America and the EU have "invested" billions in Ukraine; that put Ukrainian neutrality in doubt, so Russia went to war.
These Eastern regional referendums have all been overwhelmingly in favor of leaving Ukraine; so the media here claim they were rigged, I tend to doubt that. Ukraine went bankrupt.

Also, you shouldn't gain the right of control over an area as the result of a genocide against it's longtime inhabitants, in this case the Crimean Tatars. Stalin shipped substantially all of them off to Uzbekistan and Siberia, with many thousands dying en route or forced onto barges and dumped into the Black Sea.
That crime alone should compel the civilized world to reject Putler's belated claim of any right to control Crimea.

Maybe this gentleman should stick to being a book critic. I checked his bio and he doesnt seem to have any depth of knowledge except that he was a journalist for the BBC in moscow and for Times in carious countries. So it's really just another opinion of a bystander with their own particular bias and some of that is no doubt influenced by his age.
Unfortunately when one begins to understand the putin regime and what it is and how it operates then no credibility can be given to anything putin says or does.

He has several good points, but one thing he did not mention, is that out of 10 people enlisted into the typical Military, only 1-2 of those 10 will see combat. The rest are used in nescessary support roles. It could be as high as 2-3 out of 10 for Ukraine, who are fighting for their lives. And yes, Europe has long and wrongfully, let the US foot the majority of the bill for Europes defense. And expected the US to take the primary role, when conflict arises, then criticise the US and refuse to provide some certain effective weapons. And Ukraine will likely retake Crimea. Especially, if they continue reducing Russia's capabilities to defend it. Now, even after this is all over, Russia will NEVER be ok with Ukraine controlling Crimea. What that would probably mean a future attempt to take it back. Thats why, if Ukraine cand take Crimea back, the Kerch bridge should be completely destroyed and never rebuilt. The Russian's would undoutably, push for that bridge to be rebuilt, under the guise of "It's ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL" for trade and humanitarian reasons, while slowly and clandestinley, bringing in military equipment and embedding Russian Loyalists and pre-placing insurgents. Can Ukraine hold Crimea long term? 🤔 Could Russia even hold it long term?

Crimea was not "always" Russian. It was annexed in 1783, and in 1944 they deported most of the native population to complete the russification. Crimea is a russian colony.
