  • I decided to get the bearing edges redone before putting the new Attack heads on with heavier better side hoops. Can you tell the difference?
Thanks to Jeff Kirsch down at Kirsch Custom Drums - www.kirschdrums.com/ - He is a master and made my life of tuning drums up super easy!!! He polised the bearing edges up on the old 1972 Vistalite kit and made these toms sing!
Let me know down in the comments your thoughts.
Next up, new Attack Tone Ridge2 Clear Heads and new heavier Hoops.

I have a Ludwig Maple Classic kit that I bought new back in 2006. The 12" tom ALWAYS gave me trouble with tuning. Heads never seemed to fit or sit correctly on it, and it always had a weird, wonky tone. The rest of the toms in the kit always tuned up fine for me. I finally sent the 12" off to Precision Drum Company in New York. They inspected it, and said it had single-cut 45 degree edges, with the peak at the outermost part of the shell. They put a double 45 degree cut on it, so the peak would be in the middle of the shell, effectively making the diameter from edge to edge slightly smaller. In any case, when I got it back, the heads fit perfectly, it tuned up just fine, and I've never had any more trouble out of it. I should have done it years ago! Good bearing edges can make a lot of difference!

It is pretty amazing what a bit of work on the bearing edges will do.... when I got my dad's set after he passed, he had heads on it that were as old as I was ;-) I took them off and found terrible bearing edges from the factory. I did what I could, not knowing that only experienced folks should mess with lexan, and put a deep 45 on the inside and a shallow 45 on the outside with a little flat in the middle.
Jeff Kirsch polished them beautifully made a deeper 45 on the outside and radiused the peak. Now, the edge acts like a bearing (roller bearing) instead of a load bearing point (like a wall). It is AMAZING!
Glad you got yours sorted out!!!

@@TheSingingDrummer Yes, it's surprising that the factory edges aren't always done so well to begin with, even with higher-quality lines of drums. I'd love to learn to cut new edges myself, but I'd have to buy a few cheap drums to practice on! And it's really not something one would do very often, so it's probably just as well to take them to reputable drum shop and let them do it for you.

I would think practicing, or even experimenting on a cheap wood drum would be great.... I still can't believe I went after my irreplaceable '72 Acrylite kit with a bloody router!!!! What was I thinkging!!! But my dad must have been smilin down on me that day, knowing my heart was in the right place - even though I had NO idea what I was doing!!!!

Rich, it's the little things that count. Being able to cut down tunning time, heck, cutting it down to minutes versus 1/2 an hour, that's a big deal. Nice job.

I wished I would have taken pics of what they looked like when I got the kit after my dad passed. They were so inconsistent, even my hatchet job was better than factory. But the work that Jeff did was so smooth... Amazing!

@@TheSingingDrummer I'm glad that you were able to get that done. I know how important that set means to you.

Thanks! Now, if our basement space was just big enough to also have the Red Python kit back home... I'd be a happier camper ;-)

I have a 16 x 16 MIJ Stewart from the 60s with a really thick shell. The edges are very round with no fulcrum at all. The shell sounds really sweet like an old Gretsch. What edge do you recommend considering the mahogany/luan can be very brittle and porous?

Honestly, when I first did the bearing edges on the Vistalite kit, I was younger and not in the best headspace. After taking them to Kirsch Custom Drums, here in Portland, I found out a lot of different ways that I could have ruined an irreplaceable set.
If you are near Portland Oregon, I would suggest taking them to Kirsch. He knows his stuff. If not, find a custom drum shop that specializes in vintage restoration. They should know what is best for the drum and wood type.
      Best of luck!!!
