sE7 Small Diaphragm Condenser vs LR100 Ribbon mics!!

A while ago a friend told me about these ribbon mics that were on sale from Ebay. Even though I had small diaphragm condenser mics (sE7's), I thought I would try the ribbons out to see if they were a little less 'active'. Search for crop mood for t4i / 650D, it's the version of magic lantern that is still maintained. There are plenty of tutorials for it so you can have a different output plus other features like having RAW recording like the black magic

    did you ever give it to an experienced bassist? i was thinking about trying out bass / guitars in general and i wanted to have something affordable and cheap so if its not for me it wouldnt be a loss. im wondering, what is fret buzz? i hear that a lot when looking up reviews for some bass guitars. other than that i just want to know if this is a good purchase

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've given it to plenty of bass players. They liked the way it played but that was bc of the professional set up that I had done by Lars Rademacher. ANY instrument, whether cheap or expensive, should be taken to a set up person and have it set for the way you play. For some it may buzz the way it can out of the box, but for another player with a different style it may not. It is a good beginner bass. But you will eventually lose your money on it. But it was less than $100, so I'm not worried. I'll give it to a kid or use it in a video where we light it on fire or something. Or, I will just keep pounding out bass lines in my basement bc it's good for that. I can do things with it that I'd be afraid to do on a more expensive bass. And that was it's purpose. For that, it's a great bass. The best bass you have, is often the bass you have. It is waaay better than the bass you don't have :-p

At first I was having fantastic results.... but lately, I've started to have some missed and double triggers. The DDTI definately needs to tweaking when triggering acoustic drums with real heads on them. I have a 16 x 16 MIJ Stewart from the 60s with a really thick shell. The edges are very round with no fulcrum at all. The shell sounds really sweet like an old Gretsch. What edge do you recommend considering the mahogany/luan can be very brittle and porous?

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, when I first did the bearing edges on the Vistalite kit, I was younger and not in the best headspace. After taking them to Kirsch Custom Drums, here in Portland, I found out a lot of different ways that I could have ruined an irreplaceable set. If you are near Portland Oregon, I would suggest taking them to Kirsch. He knows his stuff. If not, find a custom drum shop that specializes in vintage restoration. They should know what is best for the drum and wood type. Best of luck!!!

    The light weight of the Bass could actually be a selling point to some Bass players, as from reading some ads on used Basses is that the reason for selling is that the Bass is getting too Heavy for them,especially if standing on a gig hung around their neck a few hours and most Basses DO need a set up as Manufacturers tend to do an average set up even on some high end Basses .The bass looks great with a good finish and what you say about the fret edges having a good finish is a bonus (this is an area that gets focussed on a lot in reviews if the frets feel rough) Seems like a manufacturers war going on who can make the best Bass or Guitar for least money.Thanks for reviewing

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And thanks for watching! It is just a little trippy on how light it is... The neck isn't awesome, but when you consider the cost of the bass, plus strings and a set up still being below $150... Really it's not bad. And, so far, whisper quiet electronics = win... It is what it is, and for what it is, it's pretty great. Thanks for leaving a comment!

    "Why they gotta use STYROFOAM?!" Because it's a relatively cheap, lightweight and very strong packing material for.long-distance shipments. It's also easily molded to custom-fit shapes and has high impact resistance. A Styrofoam clamshell inside of a fitted cardboard box will be enough to prevent shipping damage in almost any case that doesn't involve running over the package with a semi truck. Now quit complaining about nonsense like this and focus on the product qualities

    Hi Rich! Hope you're doing well. I recently bought a similar set of mics for recording video content. These things are all over Amazon under different brand names and slightly different form factors, but I figure they're probably the same under the hood. The mics I got do a pretty decent job and seem to block out a lot of background and room noise--much better than my phone's built-in mic. The only problem I ran into was that I had to download a free, third-party camera app called "Open Camera", because my Android phone's built-in Camera app would not let me select an external microphone. In your video, I definitely hear less room noise with the lavalier mic--sounds good!

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope I don't 'play' bass, I'm no bass player, but I do play some and held enough quality instruments in my hands to know this thing is light. But, it is also the player and not the instrument. I'm sure a great bassist could make this sound great - just like putting a super nice custom bass in my hands is a waste :-)

      Go for it! I can't believe how quiet my bass is and how good the pots feel. I don't have another bass here to evaluate the output but it seems to track well. But even after having it professionally set up, there was only so much my luthier could do without getting too expensive. But it plays good enough for me! Have fun!

    Is this a good mic for recording drums?

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While you could use it, I think there are some better budget mics out there to do the job. Behringer C2 matched pair mics are much better and not very expensive. The big plus with these is that they had their own 'phantom power' through an internal battery. If it is all you can afford, get it and start creating. But there are definitely better options out there.

    I have the opposite issue. I have a set of wedge lights similar to the rockville wedge uplights that flicker with the wireless DMX. I use Donner wireless dmx which is the same as the Chinly. If i connect hard wire to the wedge light it works just fine. If i connect the wireless DMX the light flickers all over the place. it does this with all 15 of the wedge lights i have. its an 8 channel light but i noticed that when i connect the wireless DMX it duplicates one of the channels and adds an extra channel making it 9 channels. Its super weird and cant seem to find a solution. The wireless DMX only has issues with these wedge lights. all my other fixtures have no issues.

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bummer - that is frustrating... I ended up giving up on the light show bc it was a late idea during the covid era... after covid, no one in the band was interested in doing live streams so I sold it all to a lighting buddy of mine, ironically we share the same name ;-) But that can be super frustrating. I found that too many lights in series would cause the whole system to do weird things. You might try running just 4 lights at a time on one wireless units - see if that works. I ended up using the wireless units as DMX splitters - keeping the lights down to about 4-6 on each. Anything more than that, and things started acting very strange. But I feel you pain!! Trying to trouble shoot stuff stinks!!

    Hey man, great content! Thinking to start recording drums the same way, triggers on drums, overheads for cymbals. How do you handle / reduce the bleed from the drums in the overheads? Thanks!

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks!!! Low cut filter and positioning of the mics to 'see' mainly cymbals and not drums. There will still be bleed... The Glyn Johns method of drum set recording is primarily using overheads. The triggers give you a ton of control though. My intention was just to reduxe the amount of live mics in the room when I am singing, doing drum covers - mission accomplished!! Now, if life would get out of the way and allow me to get into my space and get doing that again!!! #theholidayswillbeoversoon :-)

  • @amberyooper
    @amberyooper 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Adjusting the intonation is pretty easy if you have a clamp on tuner. If the 12th fret note is sharp, adjust the bridge piece to make the string a bit longer between the bridge and nut. Keep adjusting it a little at a time until the 12th fret note is in tune with the open note. If the 12th fret note is flat, do the opposite. Getting rid of fret buzz is more tricky...

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey man nice overview. I'm new to triggers and found the same ProAudioStar deal on the Vinnie's as you did and might pull the trigger on it (ha! get it?) However, since im so new to the trigger game I don't know where they sit as far as quality. I know 2-zone is ideal but if you can live with 1-zone it's fine, but how are the quality on them? I have the cheapest ddrum triggers already that seem fine but I didn't like how finicky they were to attach (they attach under a lug)...

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer ปีที่แล้ว

      I never tried their entry level, but I'm with you - I never liked that attachment method. I don't know if you can see any difference between their standard trigger set the ones that look more like the Vinnie Paul's and not like the entry level ones) or the VP's or even the chrome ones. The VP's are supposed to have a better trigger in them, but I doubt it. Right now, ProAudioStar has a deal going for the Chrome ones. But honestly, in their kits the best thing you get is the case, triggers are great, cords are nothing special. And for the dual zone one, they send you a cord with two RT 1/4" ends.... their own module doesn't even have that... it should have been a cord with a single RTS end... but a better quality cord isn't that expensive. If you have a double kick (actually two kick drums) then the VPs are for you. If you have a single kick, I'd go for the Chrome deal. Best of luck!!

    I am quite suprised by Arborea's price to performance ratio. For a fraction of Zildjian, Paiste, and others, they don't sound half bad! Very good for practice and won't break a bank for beginners.

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer ปีที่แล้ว

      I've played a lot of shows with the Arborea cymbals and the only ones I have had a bad experience with are the ozone style. When I was the full time drummer for Madwagon - now demoted to just singing :-) I hit pretty hard. All of them hold up just fine, but the ozones tend to crack between the air holes. But it is the same with higher priced brands as well...

      Its not really an inferface in the audio interface sense. It is a midi or USB interface for midi signals. It doesn't send out audio - but interprets the trigger signal and sends it out to your computer or sound module via Midi or USB.

    Drummer myself, been dabbling with guitar for years....Thanks for this video...beautiful guitar ! . I had been eying a Gretsch but instead in May 2023 went with a Squire Classic Vibe Telecaster FSR Custom baritone 27" scale which of course came tuned in the standard BEADF#B tuning and Squire puts on .014-.068 gauge round wound strings....but since I have changed to flat wounds (which I prefer and have on all my electrics as they're more comfortable and there's no squeak moving along the fretboard) and gauges .015-.060. I have also discovered some very cool alternate tunings for baritone guitar such as : AEADF#B. or AEADEA (DADGAD equivalent) or GDADEA. or GDGCEA or ADGCEA.

      I love the Gretsch. However, I just had a buddy do a set up with my little std frankentele with 15's and tuned it down to C and it is a BEAST. And I think it tracks better than the Gretsch that I paid 4x more for :-(

      They work pretty dang well. I have them on acoustic drums. I had to add some gel to my snare and piccalo to reduce some double triggering, but the DDTI unit handles everything else pretty well. Not that a lot of people have them - but they will NOT mount on roto toms. I was thinking about adding some to my vistalite kit (I have them) but trigger them to be 'other' drums.... Gonna have to figure something else out.... But its likely a sign.... I bought two sets of the triggers.. being viewer 333, you may have to buy 3 sets ;-) 6KICK TRIGGERS!!! GO BOZIO!! ;-)

      Hey man I'm 53 and I've been playing since 1985. The low end stuff coming out of Asia right now is astonishingly good. Because everything is made on CNC machines they can be super consistent. When I started anything under $150 *used* would have got you an unplayable piece of garbage. And that was $150 in 1985! Allowing for inflation this bass would've cost $52 in '85. Get it, ask someone who knows what they're doing to put new strings on it and set it up, get a cheap amp (Make sure it has a headphone out) and have fun. Bass has a high skill ceiling but a low skill floor. You'll be playing full songs in a few hours. (Tip: AC/DC have never played a bassline above beginner level in their entire career.)

    • @TheSingingDrummer
      @TheSingingDrummer ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up keeping it... the neck is finicky... I had a luthier buddy set it up with new strings and it plays great (for me) and it is silent when plugged in (no pickup buzzing). The only thing that still throws me off is the weight. My frankentele is twice as much and my gretsch baritone feels like it is almost three times :-p
