I think Bill and Ken , with Jims guidance, pulled more weight than the other teams . Ken took his opportunity to get some leaves ! A true logger !

JIm sometimes says he doesn't like to talk. From an outsider looking in, I think your TH-cam channel has really improved his oratory skills. I can't imagine that he could have done any better on this video. He is direct, open, encourages audience participation and is careful to not make a novice feel that their question isn't important. I think he's much better at public speaking than he gives himself credit for.

The filly did do well backing, that was probably her first time backing with a bit and bridle (I don't recall doing that before) She is only 2 and a half, I haven't done much at all with her other than daily handling and a handful of ground driving sessions. I need to extend those tugs so she doesn't hit her heels so much, the harness was built for Haflingers with shorter legs :)

It sounds incredible, but in over sixty years it was only three times that I didn't find a horseshoe that my horses lost. Sometimes I would look for hours, sometimes only a few minutes, but it was always my ambition to retrieve it, no matter what. For the past thirty years, since my son was shoeing my horses, he told me emphatically that spending all that time on finding a shoe was unnecessary, since he could easily make a new one, but that was beside the point, I WANTED to find it. Well, I was born in Bavaria and lived there for 44 years, and we are known to be stubborn.

Woke, studierte wohlstandsverwahrloste , junge Menschen.
So viel unnützes Leid. Was nützt denn eine angekündigte Kontrolle aller paar Jahre, aber alles politisch korrekt.
Was machst du mit deinen alten oder kranken Pferden?

I hated Bill lost a shoe but thankfully someone had an extra shoe which kept Bill able to work! (Note to self...wouldn't hurt to keep an extra shoe in hauler in case it's ever needed when away from home.) Bill and Ken were looking good in their logging demonstration!! And I was happy they asked Jim to demonstrate how to start training lessons on a new draft to work!! Couldn't have had a better teacher than Jim!👍 Great videoing Brenda!!!

Jim for a person who doesn't talk much I truly enjoyed listening to you talk about the harness and training. I don't have a horse but I truly love them. Whhen in girl scouts at summer camp learned how to put a harness on the horse and made sure the bit was in the mouth correctly. I love God's big creatures 🐎..

Good to see the lad riding in empty. I sometimes get lazy and ride if its a long way in and not using the cart. As I approach 50 I'm not as spry to nip up on as I used to be though. I ride "sidesaddle" rather than astride so I can hop off quick if I need to. I wish the bush around here was that nice and open. Around here it is all thick brush and deadfalls and you need to cut a trail in almost every tree with brush whipping you in the face. Terrible buckthorn everywhere.

Sounds like the young lady's mare is being pushy and needs to learn some respect. Making her back up might be an easy way to get her to give respect. If that isn't the case, if she is afraid of being bridled, I've overcome that in a really terrified pony in one lesson simply by putting honey on the bit so she wanted it in her mouth, and then putting the bridle on gently while she was distracted with the honey. The pony had been fought to the ground by six men and pinned down to put a bridle on her, and she fought so hard they failed. A little honey on the bit got it on in a matter of seconds, and the owner reported to me that she never gave him trouble again. I have always put my hand on the back of the horse's ear when bridling as well, so that the crown of the bridle slides down my hand instead of down their ear. That can really help with a bridle shy horse as well. I have dealt with a lot of rejects from the stockyards over the years, and many came with a lot of baggage and problems. Little tricks like that can really make a difference. As far as runaways, sometimes they do really hurt themselves. A friend's horse broke her leg on a runaway, and had to be put down. If you think you don't have time to train a colt properly, look at it as an investment. Train that colt properly, and you may have up to three decades of labor out of that horse, where most days are a joy to work with them. I trained my first little filly when I was 18. I got to enjoy her until she was 5, and then I had to sell her. She stayed with that same owner 13 years, and then she came back to me, and I got to enjoy her until just shy of her 35 birthday. The child born to me late in life got to learn to ride on that filly I trained when I was 18. That was more than three decades of payoff for the months I put in when she was young. She worked nearly every day of her life. She did horse and carriage weddings in heavy Baltimore traffic. She drove daily on trails in Aiken, SC for 13 years. She served as a lesson pony and taught kids to ride and jump. At the end of her life, she helped to break other horses to drive, taught a friend to drive, and taught my child to ride.

Hi, we didn't buy the filly. For the demonstration Jim just explained what to do when buying a new horse. I missed the beginning of the demonstration so it didn't get taped....sorry it wasn't clear..Brenda

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Thank you for clarifying Brenda! At around 30:30 Jim said: This is a horse I bought this morning. So I got really excited there for a moment :-) Not sure why though, you still have Duke and Earl to get ready as well. Anyways, love watching your videos so thanks again!

Ok, that is what I thought, but comments had me wondering , ah ha, very nice horse though, seems smart. (Moves away from danger, safety minded smart horse.)
