It was beautiful to meet so many younger people (and their families), learn how they were introduced to working with horses and oxen, and to know that this old tradition will not be lost. So much information was shared; the location was truly beautiful and provided a great backdrop. Thank you Brenda and Jim. (PS: Loved the horse vs humans pull at the finish!)

Been watching Jim for a while now and he has inspired me to start my own channel. I have a dozen shetland ponie's and I am going to train them to do different thing's on my farm. Watching Jim has taught me so much about driving horses that I wanted to give credit where credit is due. The channel is called brokefarm and if you life is horses you might like it. You guy's are awesome keep it up.

Fun videos to watch. A real change of pace. I especially like the tug-of-war. Jim, “allowing “a few young people to pull Ken backwards on the final poll, and then cheering them, tells me everything you want to ever know about Jim. He’s a great horseman but most of all, a wonderful human being. .

Thank you so much for sharing your DAPNET experiences. I can only imagine the connections everyone made. Must have been a fabulous weekend, plenty of work for the boys, not having to stand about while you saw.
I noticed, while you were getting that hung up log out, Bill was watching you very attentively, trying to do the best he knew. Ken seemed a bit excited, so much going on.
Tug-o-war made a good point. No argument who is the stronger, you or the horse. Horse can run off with 20 or 30 kids! How many kids were on that rope?
    Great job, Brenda.

I'm not sure if we have anything like this in New Zealand, but I always love hanging out with the drafts at shows, we seem to have alot of Clydesdales.

I under estimated Brendas interviewing skills. It was very informative and you must have travelled at least twenty miles over the event. It's a shame we didn't see a large team of oxen work. When I was a child we went to a logging historical park and watched a team of sixteen work with chains clanging, bull whips cracking and hoots and howls from their lean dust drivers.

Pulling down a hung tree, I keep a 100 ft cable and a couple snatch blocks handy. That way I can pull a tree sideways to get around a stump in tight quarters, then back up and hook on normal. Cable and 2 snatch block will get a mighty big chunk of wood out of a deep hole too steep for horses. Bush around here is way denser than this here video shows, you can't hardly get off the trail or turn around a cart.

  • @alangknowles

Traditionally pairs of oxen in Britain would be given one and two syllable names (like Swift and Swallow) so they could differentiate instructions. This doesn't seem to be the case in USA.
