    I owned a 2006 version of this wagon. Grand Sport package. Had the low profile Pirelli tires, touring suspension, 6 speed auto, leather, and HID adjustable headlights. It was my absolute favorite car I have ever owned. We literally ran it until it fell apart over almost ten years. It was that dark metallic burgundy color. I would scare the wife tackling the mountain roads where we live. Never found a wagon to replace it. I told the Mazda dealer I'd be back when they start importing the Atenza wagon again. I did the best I could do and bought a Regal TourX wagon a few years ago. It's not quite as exciting to drive as the Mazda but the AWD comes in handy and we get lots of "what kind of car is that" questions in the parking lots.

    Love this generation Mazda 6 wagon , a couple I knew had one in yellow, and it was so clean, they look particularly good if you put the RX8 rims on them. Just beautiful proportions, I know wagons aren’t for everyone. I also fancy the jaguar X type wagons.💯👌

      I had a 5 door Mazda 6 with RX8 wheels. They should have come from the factory that way.

    I really wish Mazda has seen fit to continue to sell the 6 Wagon here in the US. It would not have sold in large numbers, but (especially in the last generation) was quite handsome.

    A good looking car. It's a shame wagons died in the US. They have the spaciousness of an SUV but drive like a car. Midsize wagons are bigger inside than you'd expect. The two buckle center seatbelt in the ceiling is not a new thing, it's been around in various cars for years. My 2022 Subaru has the same thing. The pop-up cargo net is a very European feature. Europe loves its estate cars and this fit right in.

    I had a facelifted manual that wasn't well kept by the previous owner. It was a very useful car-- even hauling a full sized treadmill with a few inches to spare, and I wish I could have enjoyed the experience more.
    In terms of Duratecs, it had a unique enough tune where it's sweeter than the Ford mills. It was less lumpy and torquey (listen to the boxy old Escape clattering away in comparison), more smooth and rev-happy. The manual itself was let-down as a bit rubbery, further ruined by having cables mounted to the transaxle via brittle plastic, and a common fifth-gear pop-out. The manual already has very short gearing for a V6, so not having fifth gear made it that much worse for when I wanted to use it as a long-haul cruiser.
    If I were to own one again, a facelifted automatic wagon would be the ticket. The facelifted models had additional bracing, a small bump in power, a less "Sharper Image" interior (because they made EVERYTHING silver), and of course the six-speed automatic. I've driven the Mazda6 sedans with the five speed and the six speed automatics, and the six-speed worked wonders with the extra spread. The gearing is more sharp, yet the freeway cruising is still a sedate speed (unlike the manual's 3,400rpm at 80 in fifth). The look at feel of Mazda's of this era were very Germanic, very BMW-esque, and that's not a bad thing.

    Shame we don't have the latest Mazda6 wagon anymore as wagons are a niche here. They sell here mainly when disguised with SUV proportions, cause North Mericans. The sedan is a healthy segment fortunately and we need more minivans and wagons :(

    Unfortunately, no manufacturers make wagons for the USA anymore as they are making crossovers. Honda & Toyota discontinued the wagon versions of their sedans some 25 years ago. Meanwhile, wagon versions of some models are offered other countries, but not USA

    • @bwofficial1776
      @bwofficial1776 ปีที่แล้ว

      Volvo gave up on the standard height wagons and only sells Cross Country versions with a slight lift and cladding. Mercedes-Benz did the same to the E-Class wagon unless you get the AMG. Porsche does have a wagon version of the Taycan and the lifted one isn't much taller. It's a shame wagons died, they offer as much space as an SUV but drive better like a car. When I replaced my Taurus wagon the closest thing I could get was an Outback.

    only having the 6 cylinder makes sense, if you buy an Estate, you're probably using that Boot often, so more weight is being put in. V6 is potent enough to handle it and offer more.

    There are mounts for the cargo net on the B pillar too if I remeber correctly. So you can fold the seats and mount the blind on the floor level and pull the net up to the roof. You see the mounting points in the video! :) It also had what Mazda called Karikuri (or something like that, it was 20 years ago...😱) seats. The rear seat benches (1/2 split) cantilevers down on the floor, allowing the back rests to fold a lot flatter than on the hatch and sedan.
    This was a properly good car. Great interior design, great practicality, awesome exterior and what a hoot to drive! We had the 2.3 here in Sweden as the top model. Up there with the Mondeo and the Alfa 156 when it came to handeling. Porsche still braggs about double wishbone fron suspension today. The 6 had it. This was a bit like the Miata but in a sport sedan/wagon. Suspension components and construction far above it's paygrade.
    I have a 18 2.5 Signature wagon today. Still a great car with a roll up cargo net. But no Karakuri seats, and ... Well it's fun to drive. But it's not the nimble gocart these cars were.

    In Euope we actually had the 2.3 non turbo inline 4 wagon... It was cool and spacious, made around 170ish HP...actually my friend had one. I think it was officially the Mazda 6 2.3 GTA, came in both auto or stick. His was automatic and it had OE pop-up navigation in the middle where the brittle cover lives 😂

      I think you are talking about the KL engines, these were Ford engines, though this specific architecture was used by Jaguar and Mazda, each gave the engine their own tune, in fact Mazda's version had less torque but more high end power than in the Fords, and if I am not mistaken, the 6 liter V12 from Aston was basically 2 Ford V6 duratecs.

    I still have my 2005 wagon. My daughter drives it for work when she needs it. I bought it in 2007. It has about 70000 miles on it. I had the hatch cover break. I had the sun glass cover in the dash break and the roof material is sagging in places but it still runs great. Oh yeah, the digital readout is missing many lines. Hard to read. Mine is a sky blue colour. Love this car.

    You missed the biggest (excuse the pun) bonus to something you were trying to punch home!
    The rear seats actually fold completely flat, giving cavernous space. And the seat backs have slide mounts for the boot cover to mount. Then, pull the cargo net up to the b-pillars for almost van like abilities packed to the roof or several dogs as I do. I take 4 of the families large dogs to the beach together like this. They can all stretch out on the drive.

    I have a 2005 Sportwagon I bought in 2010, and absolutely love it. I’ve replaced the piece that always breaks on the cargo cover, and that’s the only thing that’s broken. Drivetrain is bulletproof. The main problem is rust on the rear fender flares. Every Mazda6 wagon I’ve ever seen has rust there, and mine is getting really bad. Wish I could replace it with a new one.

  • @DJErnVideos
    @DJErnVideos ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had a 2005 Sport Wagon that I put speed 6 wheels on same color as reviewer & mine looked exactly like this one minus the roof racks. with Leather and 5 speed manual paired to the Duratec V6, which was a weird option considering GT's had leather but no auto and Sports were supposed to be cloth and a 5 speed. I got a absolute lemon of a car. I was consistently repairing failed parts broken interior pieces, suspension you name It I damn near rebuilt the car in 4 years of ownership I put 2 engines in that car, after engine 3 died and going to be a major repair I sold it non running. I tried to love that car but it was just like "let me die".

    • @isaac4273
      @isaac4273 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh gosh, what was happening to the engines? I mention this because I'm looking to get either a Mazda 6, or a Ford Mondeo with the same duratec 3.0, are they really that bad?

    • @DJErnVideos
      @DJErnVideos ปีที่แล้ว

      @@isaac4273 Precat failure is extremely common, when they fail it will shoot chunks of the catalylist into the engine destroying it, engine 1 the precats were failing, I remedied the issue but it was too late, and the excessive backpressure from the clogged precatalytic converters accelerated the engine wear...at that point the engine just eventually died of "natural causes". Engine 2 had a blown headgasket/cracked head and low oil pressure, this was a JY engine with warranty and I think the damage was done before it was installed in my car. Engine 3 I think the crank walked which destroyed the clutch and flywheel, it was never disassembled but those were the symptoms when it died.
