  • Atheism has one major advantage: it explains evil elegantly. But how does the man of faith approach this question? In a letter penned in 1965 by the Lubavitcher Rebbe to Noble Laureate Eli Wiesel, the Rebbe discusses the questions of all questions.

Who can dislike this shiur? It's fantastic. I've always loved listening to Rabbi Yosef Jacobson. I first found him around 2000 with his Tale of Two Souls series. I listened to all 150 lectures.

thank you. This is a great treatment. As Rabbi Jacobson notes, most answers to this question amount to trying to be "God's lawyer". Rabbi Jacobson's answer is great because of its humility and recognition that a full, seemingly rational answer is impossible for finite Man living in Time. This answer shows the same wisdom as other great answers to this question offered by the novelists F. Dostoyevsky and Herman Wouk and, of course, in Job.

Suffering is not just for the one who suffers. Suffering can be for others to learn something that God wants us to learn something. To be chosen by God means to suffer. Through our suffering we may learn to shed our hardened shells created by us and this world to expose ourselves and others to the light of Hashem. At that point we will realize this world and our reality is not about suffering and all the pain we hold onto will melt away from all previous transgressions against us and to others.

Ok, let alone good people...but the bigger question is what reason is for animals to suffer? They are truly completely innocent , aren't they ?
