I understand wanting a less violent curb and fewer track limit penalties, but… is there really no better idea than literal mini ramps?
What if we, I don't know, had human beings policing track limits. We could call them "stewards" and they could be responsible for watching corners and issuing time penalties based on the severity of the infraction and driver intent (because sometimes the safest thing to do to avoid a crash is to go off-track). I know it sounds crazy, but I think it just might work and without yeeting cars off into the wall
Can't wait for NASCAR to go to The Glen and still ignore all of these corners🦅🔥🦅🔥
Yea I know the gravel made more cautions but at least the drivers stayed on the track
Fr, imagine all the track limits violations if F1 managed the Watkins Glen NASCAR race
@@BB_Sebringimage the track limits penalties if f1 was race director for nascar at cota. They would have an field day
Indy Road Course 2021 anyone?
Nothing like making a corner safer by adding jumps to it.
The "turtle kerb" is just another variant of a sausage kerb and sausage kerbs have been a documented safety hazard on racetracks all over the world. They should have left this corner alone. There wasnt a problem with it.
Definitely have to focus on driver safety and long term consequences of injuries. Hopefully we solve these problems.
I’m quite surprised about the Watkins Glen curbs, I’m interested to see how it all goes at the 6 hours of Glen later on in June!
If it ain't broke, it will be. Your suspension, back, budget...
Call it what it is, the Tommy Kendall Boondoggle. Hundreds of drivers negotiated the back straight, one couldn't, and everyone suffers. Block the shortcut, run the anvil, make them learn to drive the proper track.
If they wanted to stop or cut down on it they should give big time penalties for cutting the corner.
Well, NASCAR really only cares about making the tracks 'safer' for they 3 'big' series, so if the track doesn't work well with IMSA, I doubt they will change the bus stop if it gets the desired effect for the stock cars. Sucks, but that's the reality of the situation.
Well who knows, I assume the Daytona Road Course was abandoned by NASCAR in part for the sausage kerbs/ turtles but we'll see
Holy moly that new Lexus is HUGE, that bonnet seems to be longer than even the Mercs bonnet
Changes were needed at the chicane for years. Drivers are actually agreeing this change was a good thing for the series that run there.
Haven’t they learned from Lowe Formula series and when NASCAR first went to Charlotte Roval about Turtle curbs. The NASCAR idea was to remove grass. The curbs didn’t cause the Preece crash to be so bad the grass did
Guess we’ll just have to wait for the next Abbie Eaton before they change their minds…
They got that idea from Monster Jam. They started putting crush cars on the inside edge of corners to penalize drivers for cutting the corner. I feel like they should have found a tweak to the geometry of the corner and used a rumble strip to decentivise cutting. Something that won't hurt anything, but will really upset the car and hurt a lap time
That turn is where I met you and found out about the station behind my flagging station. That turn definitely created daylight under Miatas before the changes. WGI, IMSA, and NASCAR are all the same family (literally) now.
it would make more sense to me if they extended the wall instead of adding small jumps
These are the same bollards that we see at COTA and other FIA tracks. The prototypes are running through the Bus-Stop at Watkins at about 130 mph. It's kind of a stupid contest. I'm fine slowing them down there in some fashion through that corner. I gotta agree with CDP, though. It seems like if you get pinched onto one of those in a fight, you're gonna take a hell of a ride.
Looks a lot like the "curbs" at the Parabolica at Monza, which managed to launch a car clear over the wall! Keep up folks. Tracks have been taking these all out the place. W-Series driver broke her back on one in Austin. Very bad idea.
3:59 Let me just point out here that I don't think that they are talking about the sportcars here, we are fairly well-behaved. NASCAR however.... have you seen a road course race? they cut corners like mad. Really generous corner taking.
There hasn’t been any big accidents at the bus stop? Why would they ever do this. 💀
Have driven WGI in a sports car numerous times over 20 years. The inner loop is what separated the men from the boys, but it was safe. These turtles will brake cars, and people. It’s a stupid solution, and of course it’s for nascar which has done more to screw up tracks around America than anyone. Possibly make the cars follow the track instead of paving every piece of grass around the track.
Oh no. That's gonna cause some havoc.....
This will not turn out in their favor. Someone is going to get injured or killed on a kerb like that. Especially in such a high speed technical section.
The Mercades statement is very sad for me as I highly doubt it will keep that N/A V8 sound as it’s one of the most iconic sounds coming from any GT car in modern racing, I just hope the new replacement will sound just as inspiring as the current one.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Meanwhile Larson showing exactly why it was broken... It's a good idea to adjust the curbs there but the execution isn't good. You mentioned the curbs are removable, is there anything definite saying those curbs will be in place for either the IMSA or NASCAR races? I could 1000% see them working for smaller series/track days when you don't want people cutting the curbs too much.
Imo this should improve the race-ability of the bus stop. I just don’t really understand the justifications via safety, especially if your solution is to put in curbs that look like they could turn any car on the grid into a spaceship. Simply bringing the barrier further in would be a better solution than this
If they really wanted to make the bus stop safer they should have just paved it to make it flat and then leave it with no other changes. The wall would have stopped them from cutting
I was on a flight out of Bologna with a bunch of AMR personelle. When I asked about about the Valkyrie all I got were winks and nods. My take, the LMGT3 for 2024 is an afterthought as they get ready for 2025.
In my opinion the changes will either go really well or really bad
It's another band aid fix to a 30+ year old band aid... The inner loop was a knew jerk reaction to Kendall and McDuffie accidents.
Why not make it a real chicane with an actual brake zone that will promote less dangerous passing? Think of Spa's final chicane as an example. Spa used to have a bus stop similar to Watkins but changed it and it's worked for the better.
WGI Senior manager of facilities and operations, what would you like to know?
Hi Greyson! I have so many questions haha! I’d be happy to dm on twitter/instagram but as a fan I just want to know why this was deemed the best way to shape the bus stop for future races
I didn’t know Nazcar owned the Glen……how depressing
The Laguna Seca comparison isn't accurate imo since it's a public park technically. I'm guessing they just saw the improved safety of tarmac runoff and put it in not knowing the nuances of driver and fans preffering self-policing gravel traps instead
I hope they change it back, awful
Maybe nascar should change the curbing for nascar races only. Leave the old curb for imsa and other races.
oil pan slicers
Dose Lemans x garage cout as compition?
Is the new Lexus not already used in GT300 in the Super GT?
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Are you telling me they changed in this because Larson said this is hard on the driver. I’ve driven at this track in a cayman r race car and this corner is not hard on the driver. I guess NASCAR can do what they want as they own the track. I’m racing there this weekend and will report back.
They Paul Ricard-ed, Watkins Glen?
Who made that Ricard-ed decision?
Maybe NASCAR'S trying to bring F1 back to Watkins Glen like in the 60s and 70s? A highly unlikely possibility given the rural area and how FOM had made it clear they want more street circuits in big markets like Formula E (even if the racing sucks)
@@BB_Sebring also, Nascar working to bring in competition of viewership is kinda dumb.
Also, F1 has outgrown Watkins. The cars are too quick. It would basically be a one line race track because all the corners would be too fast to send one up the inside.
@@BB_Sebring Highly unlikely, since the current bus stop chicane kerb config doesn’t resembles anything with FIA’s grade 1 kerb. With that being said, I personally do think adding those pyramid-kerb ramp were very unnecessary since the previous flat kerb surfaces were already a huge challenge. Too much speed on the entry? Anyone will definitely gonna misses the next apex, thus ruining the racing lines. Too much kerb cutting and we’re rewarded with damaged chassis floor. If the point of those pyramid kerbs were meant to be served as visual cue point (like in monza or imola) then why not adding a different paints on each apexes lmao.
All hail the Lexus LFX
Lexus.........Toyota already running the supra in gt3000 series
I still don't understand why sausage kerbs aren't used more often lengthways along the track (especially at apexes) to dissuade corner cutting. If you slow the cars down enough by cutting without destabilising the car enough to cause an incident, that would be enough. But as you say, sounds like there's some "I'm the boss" attitudes coming from track management.
Sausage Kerbs cause more problems than fixes em
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT the problem isn't the kerbs themselves, its their use. Kerbs don't cause issues on the public highway, and a lot of the problem with the same in racing is that it's been used on exits of corners, where you're putting the loaded tyre and suspension components under even more stress, normally, to breaking point. Tell a driver they're breaking the car for lap time, they won't care. Tell them they're losing time, they'll instantly change their line to find the pace.
To add to this, where the "turtle kerbs" are, replacing that whole section with a steep, chamfered kerb, yes, would make that one corner behave in racing like a street circuit, but it would stop the cutting in an instant.
@@EikeSky what other solutions are there?
Because drivers have been injured and more crashes do happen. Of course drivers don’t intentionally use the Sausage Kerbs.
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT the only other solution is gravel, grass, and all the things we know "don't work." Depending on the objective. Long Beach has proven that without a significant penalty or just straight up changing the track (on to seaside drive) drivers will use everything available to them, including the parts of the track that are there only to protect them. Anyone who has raced as done exactly the same thing.
Personally I think that there should be 6ft of grass/AstroTurf directly outside the white lines, then safety measures beyond that. As soon as you go outside the white lines, you lose grip, but, not to the point that you have a career ending crash. A straight up road kerb with a slightly lower angle (so you aren't buckling wheels when force onto it) would be another option. Destabilise the car, but on the UNloaded wheel. Means it's uncomfortable, slows you down, but doesn't break the car or make you lose control.
Larson blames the curb but I blame his setup.
Let's get this right. The one time the actual fucking driver isn't blaming the setup, some clown on YT does...Priceless. It's the curb and the speed.
@@MrTL3wis you don’t agree so that makes me a clown? The driver didn’t bitch about the setup so that makes it not the setup? Go touch grass.
@@BadWallaby I do this shit for a living, Pal. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, so just stop.
I like the changes at Watkins. It means the drivers will actually have to take it as a corner and not cutting 80% over the curbing. Plus the wall was moved back a little too. As far a De Phillippe.... guess he will have to not drive so wreckless anymore.
so the changes are because of NASCAR really?
4:49 nascar does not know how to race between the lines. Can only make left turns
Hmmmm, must check out Kansas Speedway and the Phoenix track….especially Phoenix!! NASCAR can’t stay between the lines at either track.
Sebring has a lot of work to do as far as run off and curb quality.
hope the AM val is good. Its tough being a one car effort.
your audio is a little too low
"We're making these changes to increase the safety standards" Proceeds to add a literal ramp that will send you to the moon if you slightly cut the corner.
To my mind, mon ami, the continual movement of your hands quickly becomes a distraction.
Noted thanks!
The bus stop aint the bus stop if you cant eat those curbs, absolutely stupid from Nascar to do that and placing piramids on the inside too? Wtf, the amount of damage that 💩 will do to car, my god, dont even wanna think about it
those curbs should have concrete flower pots with steel benches around them....GO AROUND THEM.
