How I make a living off the grid in the west Texas desert

  • What I do to survive off the grid when it comes to earning money to build up the homestead from nothing. I switched careers 6 years ago and decided to get into tech and that was one of the best decisions I could’ve made but learning to live off the land will be even more rewarding. #offgridlife #offgridliving #debtfreejourney

    So I just watched this video. I want to make a suggestion. Get an old bed spring, or a couple of pieces of cattle panel wired together. Chain them to the back of your truck so they are laying on the ground. And drag them back and forth several times to smooth out the road/driveway, parts of if the property that gets jacked up after the rains. I grew up in the Arizona desert and my dad did this periodically with his 1950s pickup and it really helped ease if access, less ankle sprains, and stuck vehicles. I hope this helps 😊

    I just watch the video and I’ve been wanting to do something like you’re doing since my job can work remotely but I would need something secure like a star link. However with a good cell reception perhaps I could do my import export work and not have to do all that driving. It seems that’s why you could save some money living off grid

  • @johnsonr9

    Great info. Beautiful area but folks need to have a realistic view before they go off grid anywhere. What is your plan for income off the land?

  • @sandmanxo
    @sandmanxo ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good subject. I almost bought property nearly 20 years ago in the big bend area but didn't then due to lack of a good paying job. It's very possible today but you better have something in the war chest to setup in remote Texas to sustain off the land and pay for all the gas sibce thats your major expense there.

    Just a heads up. That appears to be a Rhyolite dome. If it is, look for black sand Hematite and magnetite. Look for bull quartz and decomposed granitic andesite rocks. If so, you may have gold in the ground

    Plenty of privacy on that arid land. However, this does not look like farm country. I seriously doubt you will be able to raise enough food here to feed yourself. Poor soil, low humidity and not enough rainfall for most food crops would keep an experienced farmer from successfully farming this land. Maybe the land can support a few free range cattle if you put in a stock tank, water well and windmill, but that is expensive.
    If I were you, I would either relocate to a part of the country that has real farm land and look for a few acres of cleared land with good soil (rural areas of Arkansas and Mississippi have cheap parcels of farm land) or I would stay put and focus on building an earth sheltered home and an earth sheltered greenhouse plus have a productive water well drilled and install a well pump powered by wind or a solar panel. You can raise some types of vegetables in an earth sheltered greenhouse in spring and autumn in a desert area to supplement basic food from the supermarket. There are arid parts of New Mexico that have experimental earth-sheltered homes, built mainly of old tires and local clay, that are highly energy efficient at recycling water and keeping the indoor temperature relatively stable.

    Why didn't you buy a diesel generator, you may have to get it in Mexico, because I vaguely remember that Amazon US doesn't have them. I am building a 2Kw one, and it will burn 2.5 Liters each 11 hours, supposedly, I guess it depends how hard it is working. Mercado Libre Mexico, advertises a 7.5 Kw diesel generator, for $1,8333

    • @waynesaller

      Forget diesel. Get a 500 gal. propane tank and propane generator. Propane should last at least a year. No hauling fuel forever.
